I agree with two reviewers who dinged them for tardiness--they were supposed to finish my install yesterday but delayed then finally came today and did finish. They are a small company and have a small crew, so any hiccup will delay the job. But they have time to answer your messages and do try to communicate. I got 7 bids for my furnace install, 5 around $6K and 2 ridiculous. I picked them because of price, Yelp, and positive experiences in the past with Trane. New 95% gas heater and all new ducting for 1400 sf. I was able to schedule them in within a week, but it took them a week and some delays to finish. Having dealt with contractors many times, this seems to be par for the course. I've had better and had worse. I liked the whole crew, felt very comfortable with them and they did good work. Our old air system died on us right at the beginning of summer and we had to get it replaced in a jiffy. Called 3 difference contractors and got wildly different quotes. Don at Air Performance gave us what we thought were the most reasonable price for the hardware and installation. The owner John came out to take a look at our old unit and ducting and explained to us exactly what will be done. The installers (John and Ronnie) came on time to start the work and they were thoroughly professional. They cleaned up every evening before they leave. I was impressed with the extra effort they took to make sure the installation was neat and clean. This is probably the first time that I have contractors that didn't try to take shortcuts. My original HVAC installer was unable to even call me back for a repair request on my central air conditioning system during the mini-heatwave in late-June/early-July 2013. I immediately went to Yelp to see who reviewed well and found Air Performance. I called and got John, the owner, on the first try. Their schedule was already backed up for weeks, but he managed to squeeze in some time to look at our A/C the next day. We were hopeful it was a quick fix, but after 10 minutes of diagnosing with gauges and a walk-through of the system, he quickly identified a malfunctioning part. The part was not immediately available from the parts supplier so he ordered, received and installed it within a couple of days. Both John and Nick were courteous and professional and answered numerous questions about the repair and how the system worked. The nice thing was that they were able to to get the replacement part covered under warranty. They provided, excellent service and went above and beyond to get me the part at no charge. I needed service on my AC and talked with John, who helped right away on a very hot day. He quickly diagnosed the problem, and put in a temp fix so that we could get relief. The equipment was old and he gave me options if it should fail entirely. Well, within a couple weeks it did just that and again he promptly came out to do final estimate. The furnace at one of our rental units failed in the middle of last winter, on a weekend of course. My property manager was scrambling to find someone open on the weekend to fix it. The first company they found came to diagnose the problem and said they'd need to replace the control board but couldn't get the board and come out until a few days later. I have some electrical experience so I overnight-ed a new board and decided to replace it myself. Well guess what, it wasn't the controller board... and when we contacted the same company to replace the furance, they gave us a COMPLETELY OUTRAGEOUS quote and didn't even tell me what model they would replace it with. Luckily, my property manager found Air Performance Heating and Cooling. It was the middle of a busy season, but they found time to come and *properly* diagnose the problem within two days. I emphasize *properly* because even though it was already determined it wasn't the controller board, they still did their due diligence and carefully examined the furnace thoroughly to make sure they really needed to replace it. During the process, they even offered to let my tenants borrow some space heaters at no extra charge. They spent over a day diagnosing it and attempting to fix it, calling me often and explaining everything in detail to keep me updated on what they found. When the technician finally threw in the towel, the owner, John, called me up to explain my options for replacement. He spoke to me with the same patience and knowledge that his technician did and best of all, his prices were very reasonable. They even refunded me the price I paid for the new controller board which I installed about a week earlier (instead of taking it out and giving it back to me). After our phone conversation, he got the new furnace shipped and replaced within 3 days. The entire process was so easy and hands off, I didn't even have to go out to the property myself. John is a native of San Ramon like I am and it was very refreshing to come across such integrity and his customer focused attitude in a local business. A long overdue review ... We had an entire heating and cooling system installed in January 2015. They were very competitive in pricing and I really liked the salesman. He not only familiarized me with heating and cooling systems and brands but happily answered any questions. Once we booked the installation we were informed as to how long the job would take etc. Everything was great. The job even took a bit longer than originally expected because they went above and beyond to make the proper adjustments. In our garage there is a pole that would hinder the easy removal of the filter. So they decided to raise the height of the unit as to avoid this pole. In doing that they had to make some adjustments to the gas line which extended the job time. I was SO happy they did this. I can't imagine having to yank the filer out sideways and possibly damage it each time. Thank you!!! Our system was also installed on the coldest day of the year which left us without heat for one night. They even offered to buy us heating fans for the house till the job was done. Thankfully we already had one and did not need to use their generosity but it was so nice to know they were concerned about our comfort. So now we are almost a year into using this new system and we have no complaints at all. They even came back out when the weather heated up to do a diagnostic on the A/C unit. Since I'm getting solar installed in the near future and my furnace and AC were getting pretty old (18 years), I decided to look into getting my HVAC system replaced with a dual-fuel system. I also needed zoning installed in my house as it's always too warm upstairs and too cold downstairs. I started my installer search by contacting well-rated companies near me (San Ramon). The first company I called took my number and told me someone would call me back within 2 hours to talk to me about my project. They never called back. The second company I called just scheduled a consultation with me without taking any info. They gave me a 2-hour window. Then I called Air Performance. John (the owner) answered the phone himself. He actually asked me about my project and then scheduled a consultation - at a specific time. When he arrived, he had materials with him based on our phone conversation. We did a walk-through of the house so I could show him what he had to deal with, and he explained the process to me. He answered my questions thoroughly and honestly. A few days later, John provided me with four detailed quotes, with options based on our discussions. One was a baseline quote - a like-for-like replacement of my current system - not what I wanted/would pick, but just so I had a basis for comparison from something familiar (i.e., he didn't have to do this quote - he was being thorough). The other three options were variants of what I wanted. John spent a lot of time answering my technical questions and helping me do a very comprehensive compare and contrast of the choices. This included going back to TRANE tech support a couple of times to get answers to my questions. He was a lot more detailed and helpful than the other company I was considering. Turns out he was also a little cheaper, so going with him was a no-brainer. NOTE: Air Performance offers TRANE systems. It seems that many of the HVAC companies these days specialize in a single vendor. The other company I considered offered Bryant systems. I did the research on the two product vendors as well, and found them to be very closely tied in terms of performance and quality. Turns out that Bryant is a bit more efficient, but TRANE had better warranties/longevity. We scheduled the work a couple of weeks out so I had time to prepare (john was ready sooner than I was). The work took a total of 6 business days. We were without a furnace for 2 days. John provided space heaters for us to use to keep the house warm during that time. There were as many as 4 guys at the house a few times, but mostly it was two: the lead guy was Ronnie, and his assistant was Jaime. Both of them were great. They were very respectful of me, my dogs, and the house. I asked Ronnie to text me each morning before arriving so I could get my dogs ready. I also asked them to let me know if they'd be going through the side gate so I could keep the dogs from getting out. They honored my every request and were very careful to keep my dogs safe. Each evening they cleaned up to the point that you wouldn't've known they'd been there, even though they were coming back the next day to do more work. They focused first on getting the gas furnace up and running so we'd have heat again. Then they got the zoning and electric components up and running. The work they did was precise and clean. I had painted the walls around my old furnace but couldn't reach behind it. After removing the old furnace, they offered to paint the remaining area for me. At the end, Ronnie gave us a thorough walkthrough of how to care for our new system, and then John came out to inspect the work and review the up-coming inspections that needed to happen. I had noticed some weird things with the thermostat that I discussed with John during his visit. The thermostat he installed was the very newest model so he didn't know the answers. He contacted TRANE tech support to find out, and is coming back out to do an update for me and make some adjustments. I had an overall extremely positive experience with John and his crew, and we're very happy with the new system. The house is much more comfortable as a result of the zoning, and the new dual-fuel system is amazing - it's super quiet and amazingly energy-efficient. I anticipate having a long-term relationship with John and Air Performance, as they'll be the ones I call when I need standard maintenance services on my new system. The weatherman predicted temps in the hundreds a few weeks ago so I needed to get our AC unit back in working order. As far as we could tell, the fan was working but there was no cool air coming out. I tried another company and they were 5 days out from being able to send someone over to diagnose the problem. I asked a friend who works in the local building industry for a recommendation and he told me to call John. I called at 3:30 and John picked up the phone on the second ring and said he'd call back in a few minutes to see when a technician could get there. 15 minutes later, he tells me Ryan is on his way. 15 minutes after that, Ryan is on my doorstep with his shoe booties on to diagnose the problem. He walked me through what parts were broken, which needed replacement and what could be repaired without additional parts. I'm one of the people that want all the details and Ryan understood that and was more than willing to explain everything. It was already past 4 PM and he didn't have the replacement part in his truck, but Ryan insisted he'd get me back up and running today so left to go grab the part back at his office, came back, instead it and had the very reasonable invoice for me to sign and pay by 5:15. First, the total cost was 46% less than the quote from the company that has been servicing our old furnace and air conditioner for the last 18 years. Second, the quality of the installation and the attention to detail of the install crew greatly exceeded my expectations. The detail and efforts that Ronnie put into the sealing the exterior wall where the air conditioning pipes and cords enter the house was fantastic (insulation, expandable foam, then matching stucco). The new unit is installed far better than the original units that came with the new home.
