've flown into Gillespie County Airport a few times now, and every time I've made it a point to stop by Airport Diner. After three visits, I kept hoping things would improve--but it feels like this place is leaning more on its location than the actual dining experience. First off, the setting is awesome. You're literally right on the ramp watching planes come and go--it's a great vibe and honestly the main reason to visit. But beyond that, things start to fall off. Each time I've been here, they've seemed understaffed. It's a seat-yourself setup, but even after sitting down, service can be pretty slow. On more than one visit, parts of the menu weren't available, and on my last trip, the kitchen wasn't even taking breakfast orders because they were too backed up. Food has been inconsistent: * Breakfast tacos were just okay * Eggs came out overcooked when ordered over-easy * Grits were watery * Bacon and sausage didn't taste fresh On the most recent visit, we had to switch to lunch. The burger was average, and the wrap was oddly put together--very thick but not well balanced. Also, the sweet potato tots we ordered were swapped out for fries. I really want to like this place because the location is genuinely special. But right now, it feels like a spot you go to for the view, not the food. We finally got here when they were open. Hubby had the migas. He loved them!!! The Migas were very tasty. Had lots of veggies in them. The chips were very crispy, he also really liked the refried beans and the soft tortillas. Their fried potatoes are awesome, very crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. I had the major McCourt, the biscuit was really dry and hard but other than that, it was pretty tasty. Can't wait to come back and try lunch. Love the location, the decor, the atmosphere -- straight out of a 40's diner. Full wall of windows looking right out on the tarmac, so you can watch planes land and take off while you eat your meal. Well -- if the meal was edible, and if you get more than perfunctory service. We went there Sunday at 1 PM -- place is open until 2 PM. My husband had been there several times before and raved about the Strawberry milkshake, so of course he ordered one, along with SOS and eggs. I ordered their bottomless cup of coffee and the Mach Migas. We got our beverages first, Strawberry shake was good as hubby remembered. My coffee was OK, typical diner coffee. Our food was brought to our table, and the server walked away -- or should I say disappeared. She dropped our food off, and never paid any attention to us again. I wanted some sugar and another cup of coffee, hubby wanted ketchup. She was going to other tables, but would not come back to our table, I tried multiple times to get her attention, she would not look in our direction. I finally got the attention of another server, and HEARD the other server tell our server that we needed something, and she STILL did not come to our table for 5 more minutes. My bottomless cup of coffee was empty, my husband's food was cold, I still had no sugar, tried to explain, not even a hint of an apology. Will not be going back. Server did take husband's meal off, but that wouldn't have been necessary if she had just come back even once to check to see if we needed anything. The 'home fries' were small-cut pieces of potato that had been deep-fried, the eggs were undercooked and runny (scrambled). Have always loved this place but my mom and her caregiver came in today to eat and were ignored by everyone. Even after being told someone would help them. On one of our trips to Fredericksburg, my wife and I, her brother and sister in law decided to eat a Sunday brunch there. Our first choice, Sunset Grill had people lined out the door and many more waiting to get served. We did not even stop. Our second choice was not much better. It was packed with people waiting outside as well. As we searched for a place to eat, we remembered that the airport had a diner so we went there to see if it was easier than the first 2 places to get breakfast. It had people waiting but the wait was rewarded when we found a table. It was first come, first served. Now, the diner looks over the jetway where the small planes can park and the flyers can walk over to the diner and eat. It's pretty entertaining. You can watch planes take off and land right there while you eat. My brother in law is a licensed pilot and loves to fly and watch airplanes. We've eaten lunch here but not breakfast. It was busy so while the service was not great, it was adequate and those young ladies who work there work fast and furious. They really earn their tip for sure. The food is good - again not great - it is a diner after all. Overall, it was an adequate breakfast. Fredericksburg is a place full of promise if you are inclined to open a breakfast/ brunch restaurant for Sundays. It was amazing to see the amount of people we saw lined up patiently to eat breakfast or brunch. Decided to give Airport Diner another shot; last reviewed by Ol' Rooster 8 years ago. GF and I had snuck out to Fredericksburg the evening before for a getaway. Decided to sleep in a bit; making our usual breakfast fave Sunset Grill not ideal because of the wait time. I was already hearing aircraft action in the skies at our hotel; something that was totally absent during from the start of the pandemic. Decided to give them another go so we could see some runway action as we dined and sipped coffee. The airport action did not disappoint! Multi million dollar jet landed and taxied by; helicopter came to life and headed south. Lots of small private planes arriving as we unfortunately dined on totally mediocre food just like 8 years ago. SOS plate aka biscuits and gravy with homefries and eggs was barely warm. Eggs ordered over easy were scorched from being cooked at a high temp. Biscuits were shown no love; not even split for you. Taters with chili powder spiked salsa was the best bites. GF's migas suffered the same temperature issue. Cooks still won't cook bacon to order according to our server. She was friendly attentive and that's why we're at 2 stars (down from three stars previously). You're better off getting McDonalds and sitting on the tarmac! read more

Have eaten at Airport Diner twice in last two weeks, once for breakfast and once for lunch. Both my wife and I had eggs with "home fries" while I had link sausage and biscuit and she had bacon and white toast. The home fries were barely cooked with little brown on them. My sausage was cold and had to be sent back to be microwaved. The bacon wasn't much warmer. The bacon was tasty but MUCH too salty. The toast was so lightly toasted you could hardly see any brown on it. The biscuit was so hard I could barely cut it with a knife and had trouble chewing it. Both of us had meatloaf for lunch. It was more filler than meat. Not very tasty. It was served cold. I like going there because I'm a pilot and like to watch the airplanes. First we weren't greeted at the door. After several minutes and being seen by staff, we finally had to just sit down at the counter. The place wasn't slammed or anything. Ordered and never got silverware. Had to ask so we could eat. Ordered SOS. Bland as can be. Dense biscuits, gravy was nothing special, two eggs and watery grits with no seasoning to speak of. Got the "cheese grits" and it was an extra buck for a few shreds of cheddar cheese on top that glopped up and the grits became stringy and worth the trouble of eating. The best thing about the place is the diner decor and the view of the little planes taking off but no one is taking pride in the breakfast service. Oh and the AC wasn't cooling and we were burning up. Please elevate the food experience to match the decor. It took 1 hour to get our food, and I don't think I have ever tried anything more bland in my life. The salsa was good, but everything else was in desperate need of flavor and salt.
