Food was good but service was the worst I have had in Aspen. John was our waiter on the patio and was in a different universe. He openly admitted that he forgot about us. Water glasses were not filled till 5-10 min after we were seated. Then water glasses were left empty for over 30min till after i was done with my food. Asked twice to get then filled and felt like I had to yell across the patio to get John's attention for anything. My kids wanted chicken tenders after skiing and made a smart ass response to me that we are at a 5 star restaurant. This is not a 5 star restaurant don't kid your self. It's your customers that get you a five star rating. I would not come back and am disappointed that Veuve Clicquot is the sponsor on the patio at the restaurant this is not the service that is associated with this brand. I don't normally write reviews on service like this I just let it be. But this singular time John pissed me off so much I had to. I work with reps from Veuve and would like to have the sponsorship removed as this place is not worthy of any title. Food....Eh, I'd rate it as Aspen version of bar food....intersting stuff on the menu, but keep in mind it IS bar food.... Drinks/AWESOME. Strong, and the service is quick! Being that this is a SkiCo owned restaurant, I am extremely disappointed. Food is great. Service is some of the worst I have had in Aspen. I frequent the Little Nell, and receive excellent service. I really want to love going to Ajax, due to food and outdoor ambiance, but the service is so bad that its always a hesitation. Slow and rude wait staff is the norm. Good/great food will never justify horrible service. With COVID changing the way we dine, I'm really surprised that the service hasn't improved. We waited 2 hrs before seated. Initially being told its a 45 min wait, then it became one hour wait and then two hours. The frustration of waiting and worry ( cause we are also have other more important activities to do that day), made my rating reduced by 1. Despite the frustration, the food came out surprisingly good, like really good texture and well marinated and still has complex taste to it. We had the salmon nicoise, rotiserrie chicken (poulet roti), bolognese pasta (emma farms bolognese) and mussels pot (moules mariniere). These we think are well worth the price. This place is a must do at least once per vacation. We love coming here at the begining of our vacation to get in the snow mood! There is nothing better than sitting at the base of Aspen mountain enjoying a warm rum apple cider as people come in from a long run on a couple black diamons. I have tried quite a few things here, but as I'm sure you can see that they are known for their truffle fries. Be prepared to wait a couple of minutes if you want to sit inside, they are usually pretty busy. Especially if you come around the end of the ski day. read more

Very disappointing experience at Ajex Tavern. We set up a reservation about a month ago for dinner so we could sit out on their outdoor patio and enjoy the view of the mountains. When we arrived they had a private party on the patio blasting music. Everyone else sitting on the patio that wasn't part of the private party seemed very annoyed. I heard several people complaining. We asked the host what time the party was going to be done. He told us it was supposed to have been done at 5pm. It was already 6pm at that point. The manager came out and said the party should be done in 15 minutes, but couldn't guarantee it. We cancelled our reservation and went to The Garden at the Hotel Jerome. Please don't book reservations if your going to have really loud and obnoxious music blasting outside. It doesn't make for an enjoyable experience for your other guests. read more

Worst meal I've ever had in ant restaurant! Believe the negative reviews, because they're 100% accurate!! My family has been in the restaurant business for 40 years and I have never felt such a disappointment. I love great restaurants and have never left a bad review, but our dinner tonight was the most overpriced, awful food, so hear it is. After reading all the bad reviews, I decided to go with the safe option of tomato soup and grilled cheese. Well, I should have just eaten elsewhere, because it was the worst grilled cheese and the most sour tomato soup I've ever had in my life. I would have been better off with a can of Campbell's Soup and making my own grilled cheese! Two of my family members got the special and they were equally disappointed. THE apres ski place to see and be seen in Aspen. At the foot of the lift, most people have on ski boots in the afternoon. Maybe the best outdoor dining at any ski place. Plan to order food if you take a table. They have short bar for drinks only, but it's crowded. Food is modern american. Well prepared and priced in range for a fancy ski town. My fiancé and I were traveling to Aspen to scout out places to cater for our wedding. And this place seemed popular so we figured we would try it out. When we got there we noticed its was dark, loud, and a small space not really a nice atmosphere. Our server took a while to get to us. My drink was great, I got the strawberry lemonade . And looking at the menu the options where pricy and limited. We where practically almost done with our drinks by the time we ordered our food. We ordered the truffle fries and roast chicken. The truffle fries were in a huge portion which is good considering your paying $20 for them. They had way to much parmesan though. That's literally all they tasted like. And I was not impressed with the roast chicken, the chicken tasted like it was a rotisserie chicken from Walmart and the mashed potatoes were like box mashed potatoes. Best place to ski down and grab lunch at the bottom of Aspen mountain. The food is surprisingly good. We ate here three times over the course of a week. I went there for lunch during a very busy day. Regardless of the fact, my waitress was very accommodating and attentive. At times where she couldn't be, Jorge the manager would step in and help. Jorge was very hospitable, caring and easy going. From my observations at lunch, I believe he has great leadership skills and this is reflected in his team. Best spot in Aspen for Apres Ski...everyone knows that. Yes, it's a bit of a scene, and yes, you have to get there early if you want a table. But the view is great, the people-watching is even better and they usually have a pretty good DJ playing during ski season for Apres Ski from Thursday thru Sunday. Insider Tip- don't do what I did and order a glass of Veuve Clicquot Champagne for $25, when you can buy a whole bottle of Veuve for only $100. That price is unreal, and a steal! A bottle of Veuve will cost you $50 in a wine store, so at only a 1x markup, in Aspen, is crazy cheap. You usually see Veuve on menus for like $150 or more. Overall, you can't go wrong here. Even people who are non-skiers should come here for Apres Ski as it's so fun! Highly Recommend! read more

Ajax is in a prime location at the foot of Aspen mountain, so one could understand why it's such a dynamite après ski spot. Unfortunately with a busy crowd comes an even more overwhelmed staff that doesn't visit your table until about 20 minutes after bring seated. I would hate to think their service suffers, because they think that due to their sweet location they don't need to maintain the quality of customer service to retain guests. Think how much better the experience would be for customers if it was all good things (location, service, food, ambiance) all rolled into one?! The steep prices would be a little more justified, too. Don't just do it to get by. The food is pretty delightful. The truffle parm fries are perfectly cooked and seasoned and their salad menu is on par, as well as their cocktail list. This is the most bustling place on Aspen mountain for lunch. It has a nice mix of skiers and fashionistas all looking to sun themselves on the deck or warm up inside with an order of truffle fries. During the busy season, waits are horrendous-seriously over an hour for lunch. But order a drink, enjoy the people watching and hang out. Food is pretty solid without being remarkable. The tomato soup with "cheese bread" is pretty comforting and the Moroccan chicken had great flavor and is accompanied by a farro salad with almonds. French onion soup is neither the best nor worst I've had and supposedly they have a great burger. Bottom line: if you are in Aspen, you have to come here at least once, even if only for Après. read more

The way the dimwit waitress explained to us the difference between a full order and half order this way: "Well it's like a full order is a dozen and a half order is around half that which you get a lot more if you order the full order"? DUHHHH WHAT? She won't be attending MIT next semester. She made a comment that they serve dogs better than they do people. I was not sure where that comment came from and left wondering if she was on drugs? The wine pour was approximately of a glass and as I recall $12 for the Sauv Blanc. We complained and never saw her again. Someone else brought the check. She had a boy's name. I wish I'd saved the check because I really wanted to call to complain. The table next to us with 5 people had the same issues and just made jokes with us about the farce of service and putrid expensive food. The only good thing about the Ajax Tavern is the view. So buy a bottle of wine, have a picnic 20 yards away on the mountain and spare yourself the torture of bad service and expensive poorly done food. Do you like grease, butter, and fat? (And I ask that lovingly) Well pull up a chair! :) My advice is to get the fondue to share as a group and just get a few appetizers for the group afterwards.
