I was so disappointed at Ajax Tavern tonight. It's one of our regular go to restaurants during the winter season and we've always had great food and friendly service. The food was delicious and came out in good timing so props to the kitchen. That said the service was terrible. The waitress took our order hastily and added an item that we were inquiring about but declined when ordering. When our food arrived that item also came with our meal. I told the server who brought the order that we didn't order that item and that I understood why our waitress might have made the mistake as we talked about it but declined after picking out something different. The waitress sent over her manager with the item who told us that they cannot resell it per Colorado code and we must accept it and eat or they could throw it in the trash for us but that we would be paying for it. I told him we did not order it or want it and it must have been an honest mistake on the waitresses part as the three of us at the table had all heard that we did not want the item. After a significant back and forth they agreed not to charge us for the item but we couldn't get any service for the rest of the evening. It was the cold shoulder and the rudest attitude I've ever experienced. If I was the owner of this restaurant I'd do some serious customer service training. Yes you have a wonderful location. Yes the food is very good. But if your servers treat customers the way we were treated tonight, you're in trouble. We will not be back. read more

Had higher hopes for this place. The lamb bolognese was tasty enough though I thought it was odd that they shaped the mascarpone as a quenelle on top of the pasta instead of integrating it into the sauce. The half roasted natural colorado chicken was the biggest disappointment - dry like leather, practically inedible and the poppy seed spaetzle and parsnip did little to boost the dish. The highlight was the dessert - a deconstructed spiced ginger pear and raspberry cobbler with cinnamon gelato and vanilla anglaise. Not a memorable meal but I suppose not too badly priced given how expensive Aspen can be. read more

This was one of my favorite Aspen restaurants -great location- but seems to be going downhill. On a recent lunch visit the "lobster roll on a New England bun with taro chips" was an okay lobster salad in Texas-toast style bread drenched in rancid butter (margarine?). Instead of taro chips, the kitchen dumped a handful of supermarket ruffled potato chips on the plate. My companion had an equally subpar meal. Totally indifferent wait staff. After a pricey, subpar meal I felt ripped off, maybe because I expected them to live up to past standards. Location and ambience deserve at least 4 stars, sadly the food and service would be lucky to get one star. read more

So I went to lunch here, and I walked out on my lunch-didn't even finish the meal. Let me start by saying that I have never walked out on a meal at a restaurant. I went there for lunch with my boyfriend and my dog. Aspen is extremely dog-friendly and I was asked if my dog was a service dog when I was being seated. I answered yes and offered her (the dog's) id they said it wasn't necessary. It took them over 10mins to greet us. A bit later there was a big dog that walked by and my dog was afraid of it would intimidate her so I picked her up to hold her (7lb pup) and just sat her on the chair next to me so she wouldn't misbehave life the other dogs were around her. Instantly a lady not dressed in server clothing came over to let me know that I needed to keep her on the floor and that if she was a true service animal she wouldn't be on the chair. I apologized and placed her on the ground. All the other dogs around her were barking at this big dog- going crazy. Mine just sat by my feet. The lady then proceeded to comment loudly that I should have just left my dog at home, "these people think they can just bring their dogs everywhere," she said. I told her again I'm sorry but I could leave her at home. Then she proceeded to walk away when she then turned around and shouted from across the patio, "What service does your dog even provide, she isn't supposed to be here (something to that effect)." Honestly, I kind of blacked out a little bit; I just felt tears starting to swell in my eyes. I don't do well with screaming and nonsensical confrontation. I have really bad anxiety, and I told my bf I was ready to go. He was so upset and asked to speak to a manager, she then said that he was busy at a dinner (still shouting across the patio. We figured we've made enough of a scene and just left. Please note this restaurant is attached to the only 5-star hotel in Aspen, and the hotel is famous for its dog menu. Irony. So we got up and left. Nobody deserves to be treated that way, I get that support/service dogs have certain laws that need to be followed but guests should never be treated badly. Sorry, you were having a bad day lady, just don't take it out on your local customers. Locals are literally how you get by in the shoulder seasons. read more

Fantastic view of Aspen Mountain, especially on a sunny day at lunch time while sitting in the heated patio. Service is always quick and friendly and beer selection is local and solid. The truffle fries, whilst only using truffle oil, are quite delicious and the onion soup is awesome. I've yet to find an item on the menu which strays me away, and with a view like that, I'd be hard pressed to find a better total lunchtime experience. Maybe not the ideal place for a fancy dinner and I've yet to eat inside, however this place seems as though it can grapple many eating experiences and handle them exceptionally. I got the cheeseburger, which was A-MA-ZING. Maybe I haven't had a good burger in a while, but it was spectacular. Oh and I had the beet salad beforehand, which was a 10! Hubs had trout, which he enjoyed but it wasn't a particularly hearty portion. For dessert we shared something chocolate, can't remember name, and it was very good (and very small). Add killer people watching to the great food and our evening was a winner! Service was good/solid. Waitress was friendly. Not killer service, but fine. Stopped by for a great bottle of bubbles and some of the world's best truffle fries. You absolutely can't beat the view from the patio. Our server, Rob, was fabulous and took great care of us. On top of generally being awesome, he also ran several blocks to give us back the credit card the aforementioned bubbles made us forget. Highly recommend this spot! read more

The manager is lacking customer service skills which is why I am giving this restaurant a one star review. Our waitress accidentally knocked over my purse from a high top bar stool and when it fell my phone screen completely cracked and my phone was inoperable. I couldn't use it for 4 days as I had to wait to leave Aspen to get it to an Apple Store. The day my phone broke, I alerted the assistant manager (who was nice) and she let me know she would find out what they could do. She took a picture of my broken phone and was sympathetic. When I got home, I called several times and when I finally reached the actual manager he was rude and dismissive. He shared with me that there was no proof my phone was broken at his restaurant (despite the picture), would not offer to comp part of my meal nor did he apologize for what happened. For the hospitality industry this is unacceptable and I will not return. read more

This might be a fun place for an apres ski drink or snack, but otherwise, I'd pass. I was looking for a good restaurant to have a nice dinner while in Aspen this past weekend (8/13/16), after reading online reviews I chose Ajax Tavern. I was very disappointed. The place was about 3/4 full on a Saturday night at 8pm. Our waitress was not friendly or helpful. The most disappointing was the menu, there wasn't really much on it that seemed great. So my friend and I opted for the steak frites (the only steak on the menu). We both ordered it medium. It came to us very rare, the mashed potatoes were soaked in blood. The steak was just ok, certainly not worth $36. I've had better at Outback. So overall, unfriendly service, limited menu, mediocre food and overpriced. read more

Joined them for a late lunch Saturday afternoon. Very welcoming staff, seated us in an oversized booth with views straight up Ajax. Enjoyed there baguette and white bean dip along with cocktails. Shishito peppers were great, topped with some preserved lemon. Salads, entree's and slide dishes were delicious and good size. Service from Nick and staff was exceptional for a tavern, even in Aspen. read more

I was here for the second time this past weekend. The first time was possibly a year or two ago. Both times, we sat outside. There is no question- this is a five-star view of the mountains. That said, the menu is very limited and extremely overpriced, even by Aspen standards. $17 for truffle fries? Seriously??? There wasn't much that I was interested in, but I did get the salad with shrimp. (Again, $17 for just lettuce and Dijon dressing, up to $20 if you ask for 3-4 grilled shrimp with it). Honestly, that salad was quite good but not $20 good. The bread that came was also decent, but as mentioned by others, the weird puree that accompanies it is horrid! I didn't find it bland, per se, just yucky. My husband always gets a cheeseburger at Ajax, which they seem to do well. And we were able to get regular fries, which I think are $7. They taste good, but they're super greasy and covered with some kind of herb that gets in your teeth. Also, the Ajax serves Heinz ketchup with high fructose corn syrup. Can't they make their own or at least get a better quality ketchup to go along with the fries?? We didn't have dessert and I would probably come here again to sit outside but I wish they would consider offering more quality and variety for the prices they charge. read more

Well, I must say that I agree with many of the reviews. The service is consistently poor. I live in Aspen, so have been at least four times over the last year (the only time-span I consider relevant). Every time was bad, either for the service or the food, a time or two even both. The burger is unimpressive and $20 after tax. No, it is not a worth-$20 burger, and there are many far superior burgers in town for much less (J Bar, CP,...McDonald's). As for the people-watching: it's Aspen; go literally anywhere during the ski season or summer. Anywhere. There's even a spot on the other side of the gondola if you're dead-set on being up against Ajax. Let me use examples. My friend and I were seated outside, where it took (I am not an exaggerator) 20 minutes for someone to even bring us menus. Then another 15 to get our order taken, during which time, the bartender noticed we had not gotten service and offered to get us at least our beers and see what was up with our server; he was great. The other literally 5 other servers who wandered past: not so much. Our server only came after I finally spoke with the manager, whom I had to get up and fetch. The bartender had already spoken with the server himself and the attitude dripping off the idiot server was thicker than the buttery concoction they serve with their bread. After finally getting the oysters we ordered as an app, we decided to leave. Obviously. Nothing was so much as discounted even though the manager had been informed of the matter. I'm one to give a place a decent chance, especially with the turn-over rate of Aspen businesses. So I went again when a visiting friend said she wanted to try their burger. Service was, wonderfully, only mediocre this time! As for the burger, the components are good, but the patties were dry, tasteless, and seemed to be another Cisco-supplied meatish-patty. If I may I remind you, this cost $20 after tax. Yah. Not worth it. When another friend offered them up as an option for lunch, I hesitated, but being the off-season, sit-down lunch can be difficult to find. The service was fine this time, thankfully. I'm an easy consumer, but I hate goat cheese; I have a visceral reaction and get sick to my stomach. When I ordered the chicken sandwich, I asked for "just not goat cheese." Naturally, it showed up with the goat cheese presented on the menu. I was too hungry to wait for another, so I ate as much as I could: 2/3 of one half. Left most of the fries too, since they were a mix of over-cooked, tasting like over-used oil, or undercooked with the appearance of fingers after an hour-long bath and flaccid. After the manager heard that I had received the wrong cheese, about which I did not make a stink, he came over to tell me he was sorry that I thought I had gotten the wrong thing, but it was Swiss. He had even talked to the chef! (Ooooh!) Look, buddy, come over, apologize that I was unhappy with what I received, and be done with it. Don't be arrogant, and definitely don't tell someone who was raised in professional kitchens with professional, restaurant-owning chefs and has done a multitude of other food- and kitchen-related occupations that she has mistaken the most dull of cheeses for goat. "Well, even if he was rude, I'm sure he at least took it off the bill since you couldn't eat it!" No. No he didn't. A table of two Aspenites, one of 30+ years, and he decided to make the name-ruining call of charging the $18 (+tax of course) for the uneaten chicken sandwich. I will do all that I can to make people aware of all of these experiences. Especially if it is ever again suggested by a friend. Let me be clear, though, the food isn't awful, the food+service+management = not worth it considering the options. read more

While this restaurant has a great view, the service is absolutely tremendous and the servers are as unprofessional as they come. The servers are rude, arrogant, and quite frankly very uneducated when it comes to food and wine. Our server messed up our order multiple times and charged us for all her mistakes. Additionally, the servers continued to whisper about other tables nastily next to our table, which was quite unsettling. Have been to Ajax over a dozen times over the years and have always had mixed experiences and feelings about this place. Yes, the location is great and some if the food items are good (truffle fries and burgers come to mind), but last week I arrived with my wife and son for our 6:00 reservation and were give a awful table in the hall by the bathroom. Asked for something better, but that's all they had. Then we waited 20 min - no one even brought water. We were frustrated and left... Went to Brexi and ate at the bar which was a great experience. When we arrived to Ajax I was told there weren't any outside tables that were In the shade because of future reservations ( I was very confused because there were only 3 tables filled) so we agreed on sitting down in the sun for our meal. As we sat down we were greeted by someone who took our order. We began talking when another waiter came and attempted to take our order. Then, 5 minutes later, yet another server came to try and take our order. We finally got our order in, the waiter was very nice to squeeze us into the happy hour menu, and we sat and talked for some time. As we began sweating and developing burns due to the sun, we looked around yet again to a very close to empty outside seating area. This was about 30 minutes after our initial sit down, so we concluded that there were no recent reservations that were blocking us from sitting in the sun. Flustered we finally got our drinks and fries, which were very good, and we again sat for a very long time overhearing to which we then decided since the waiter hadn't come back for 15 minutes that we had to walk into the restaurant ourselves to pay. I was flustered to find out most the servers were sitting in the kitchen inside talking about golf while the managers did absolutely nothing. While the food was good, this restaurant is not suggested to other people who are planning on having a pleasant time. read more

Great place to watch the skiers they have indoor and outdoor seating. The food was great! My husband has the salmon with veggies and nice light wine sauce. I had the cheeseburger and upgrades to truffle fries both were delicious! The margaritas made perfectly as well! Love this place!! read more
