Every time we visit the Bay area, our friend recommends one of their go to spots. Today, it was Ajito. I love izakaya and always feel it is dangerous when I get the sheet of paper and am left to order whatever it is I am feeling. I ordered the chicken wings, beef tongue, scallops, pork belly, chicken thighs - they were all great. The only thing that missed the mark was the chicken skins - they were quite chewy probably from being overcooked, there was a noticeable char to it. I'm debating if I liked the spicy chicken meatball as the spice came from Tobasco (or something that tasted like it)... just kept me off guard so not entirely sure if I was a fan or not. We also ordered a few dishes for the table to share, including the mentai pasta (super rich and cream), mentai cheese fried sticks which I would order again in a heart beat, and also the salmon poke chips. Service was for the most part good. The only misstep was a dish we ordered the beginning of the evening never came until about 15 minutes before we were going to leave. I feel like the restaurant could do some more to enhance the izakaya experience by way of their decor. Vibe: the place has a hipster vibe, the lighting is darker than most places but is very clean Service: the food came relatively quickly, though they forgot one of the dishes we ordered so we had to remind them Food: we got the salmon avocado tartare and the squid ink udon and the risotto, beef tongue stew, chicken skin skewer, salmon skin salad, daikon mochi, and yellowtail fish. The beef tongue stew and chicken skin skewer and risotto stood out the most as interesting and flavorful dishes -- the chicken skin skewer was perfectly crispy and savory and the stew was cooked to a tender texture and had nice baguettes to absorb the flavor. The risotto was prepared in front of us on a cheesy base and was very tasty though the portion size was smaller. The salmon avocado tartar was decent but was quite small, the chips were a nice touch and the sauce was flavorful. It almost tasted like an unrolled salmon avocado sushi with chips instead of rice. The daikon mochi was decent but I didn't quite find the fried savory taste as good as if it had red bean instead inside. The udon was quite good but also small in portion size and had a good kick to it with the flavorful ink. I don't like going to San Jose very much but Ajito makes me consider moving to San Jose. Dining at Ajito made me very nostalgic for Japan, especially since all the waitresses (and much of the clientele) seemed to be Japanese. The food and services reminded him of his younger days, he was still talking about it this morning. First the service deserves mentioning, I called to make reservation before they open, the person on the phone was polite and cheerful. Throughout the dinner, the wait staffs were pleasant, attentive and efficient. In the sequence served, we had the following: Ankimo-monk fish liver in a ponzu sauce served with shiso and seaweed, portion was small but very fresh and tasty. Chickien meat balls and black pork sausages, both were good/OK, sausages were probably store bought on the salty side. Oyako don very authentic, steaming hot rice topped with tender chicken and eggs in a sweet soy based sauce, comfort food at it's best Fried oysters done right (or the way as hubby remembered) four panko breaded oysters perfectly fried. Sashime salad, a generous portion of spring mix topped with slices of assorted raw fish; tossed with a light ponzu dressing. Very refreshing and of great value. Soba, cold buckwheat noodles cooked to a perfect chewy texture, excellent with the sauce, minced daikon, wasabi and green onion It was certainly a satisfying and interesting meal in a casual setting with excellent services, we will be back to try many other interesting dishes. read more

Ajito is an unassuming little place with really delicious food!! Some highlights from the dishes I've tried: Mentaiko udon: this is a really rich and creamy udon dish with a ton of seafood flavor. The serving is smaller than it looks though, and we finished it really quickly. Salmon roe rice bowl: we got the sashimi as well as cooked versions and they're honestly really bomb. They don't skimp on the roe serving for this dish! Assorted nigiri: the fish was really fresh and soft. Loved the nigiri here and it just melted in my mouth! Hojicha creme brûlée: I cant remember the exact name of this dessert but it was AMAZING. The pudding inside was super creamy with the tea flavor really standing out, and it paired perfectly with the torched top. Mango sorbet: super delicious as well and one of the better sorbets I've tried. I've also tried the yakitori here which I loved (but can't quite remember which exact ones I tried). They were really wonderfully seasoned and the meat was definitely high quality. I do think Ajito is a tad pricey. I don't mind spending money on food I love, and I think Ajito has great quality food but I'm not 100% sure it's completely worth the price. Last night was my first time experiencing what the hype was all about. I must say every thing was on point with seasoning and temperature of the food. The Beef Tongue Stew stood out the most because it was extremely tender and tasty. The chicken curry was yummy as well and the naan came out warm with my dish. The skewers full of its juices and sweet sauce topping melted soo good. Scallop skewer was very tender and not over cooked. The chicken heart was hands down the best I've ever had in my life. Ordered without sauce. Yaki Udon had a unique smell and flavor, even the table next to me said it smelled good. The bonito flakes gave the dish a nice touch of flavor. All of the food here was SO tasty! Just FYI, this place is all about chicken. My boyfriend and I had all sorts of treats. First we had the salmon with avocado and potato chips. We LOVED it! It sort of reminded us of the same taste as the hamachi shots at Alexander's, but not as fancy. We had the Parmesan risotto. Mmm it was so cheesy! They mix the risotto at your table in a huge wheel of cheese. It had bacon bits inside the risotto. We had the chicken curry with naan. We were expecting more of an Indian curry (since it mentioned naan), but it was definitely a Japanese chicken curry with buttery tortilla like pieces of naan. We had the Yaki onigiri which is always one of my faves at any izakaya restaurant. We ordered 3 of the skewers. The reason why I didn't give this place 5 stars was because we didn't like the skewers as much as the other dishes. We had a pork belly skewer, which was our favorite of the 3. Since this place is known for their chicken, we got the thigh and the breast. We would skip these two skewers next time. Would personally pass on the cold tofu, kinda bland and doesn't have much taste. Wing skewers were good! would order again, however the chicken skin tasted really rubbery so I would pass. I came here for dinner on a Sat, we got there around 6pm and am so glad we did because it got super packed around 7. The restaurant is pretty grungey inside, and didn't have a very izakaya like theme, but the deliciousness of the food overshadowed the grunginess of the interior. It was very smokey inside because of the constant grilling / bbqing. It is really easy to order too much, because there aren't any pictures of the food, nor do you have anyway to gauge how much you are ordering. We ended up ordering way too much food, we ordered 2 gizzard, 1 heart, 1 special heart, deep fried chicken skin, pan fried onigiri ( must get ), cheese risotto ( must get) this dish is brought to your table and made in front of you super cheesey and delicious, shishito peppers, thighs, and liver. The dishes look really small, but once you eat them you end up really full. My favorite out of all the dishes were the cheese risotto and the pan fried onigiri. I think next time I will be back with more people, that way I will be able to try more food. I made a reservation for 2 on a Thursday night at 7:30pm. The person on the phone was very cheerful and sounded super cute and Japanese (surprise!). Making the reservation was super easy and quick. So, we got there at 7:30pm and it didn't look super packed but you could tell it was nearing capacity. It took a while for us to get seated though, we waited around 5-8 minutes for them to clean and bus other tables. Inside, it felt very Japanese! There were quite a bit of Japanese customers and it felt like Asia too, since they gave out those warm towels. I ordered the salmon bowl with salmon roe, 1 chicken skin skewer with salt, and 1 chicken thigh with sauce. The salmon bowl was super delicious. The salmon was super fresh and tender, and the salmon roe was so so good. I would definitely get this again. A lot of places give you too much rice for a bowl like this but the ratio was spot on. I finished everything. I was a fan of the chicken skin skewer. It was nice and crispy on the outside. The chicken thigh skewer was also so good. It was SO juicy and the sauce was delicious. The chicken also had really good flavor. Just knocking down a star because the food and skewers took a long time to come out. Each dish we tried was fresh and tasty, and we especially enjoyed a daily special that included grilled chicken and skewers (check their Facebook page for those) and their Asari Ramen. CLAM RAMEN. Quarantine Eats #58: Although I haven't eaten here for a long while, I decided to give this place a go again this past Friday and was thoroughly impressed! The ordering process over the phone as well as the pickup went smoothly, and the saba mackerel fish bento was unboxed just 20 minutes after ordering (I had been trying to eat more protein from non-land animal sources). The fish was grilled nicely, with the firm but not dry meat pairing well with the lemon provided with the fish. Besides the rice (which was pleasantly mushy but the texture of each grain was still pronounced), a lot of side dishes were also put in, including a tomato and lettuce salad (with a sweet sesame-based dressing), edamame, blanched carrots and broccoli, marinated eggplant (savory component), a bamboo shoot, bean sprout, and cucumber mix, sweet marinated seaweed (placed on top of the rice), and a cup of chopped honeydew. All of these paired really well with the rice and fish (except the honeydew), and was well worth the $12.99 price. All in all I would definitely return here in the future whenever I am craving some tasty Japanese bento! read more

The boyfriend and I are on this try-new-restaurants kick in the South Bay right now, and Ajito was a disappointment overall. We walked out wishing we had gone to one of our favorite, reliable restaurants (ahem, Tanto) instead. The food itself, however, was very good! Some standouts were: - Chicken skin ($2.50, unique texture, indulgent and crispy) - Charcoal-broiled sliced beef tongue ($8.00 for 5 thick slices, so tender with a satisfying bite) - Chicken cartilage ($3.50) Unfortunately, the service is what soured our night. We placed an initial order but, as with most yakitori/izakaya restaurants, we ended up ordering 1-2 extra dishes later in the meal. We found ourselves waiting an additional 15-20 min for our extra orders. We had long finished eating everything else. Nobody came to ask us how we were doing. Our water glasses sat empty while the waiters walked in and out with OTHER tables' food. In fact....we got served our check while we were still waiting for last orders to come! I'm typically quick to forgive (I understand the restaurant industry is a tough one!) , BUT this situation was particularly aggravating. Because of this, I wouldn't return anytime soon and if I were, I'd avoid adding orders during the meal. There are just too many other, more competent restaurants out there. read more

The food is overrated from what I see on the reviews; 3.5 stars at best for quality, flavor, and execution. My miso cod was thinly sliced with mediocre taste. Your typical izakaya with a good array of options. Got the daikon mochi agadashi, ika potato ball, chicken karaage, takowasa, soba, and a few yakitori (specical heart, thigh, shishito, shitake) The daikon gochi and ika potato balls were a little disappointing. The mochi was not chewy and more just like a coquette. The yakitori was good, definitely recommended getting the special heart and shitake. Takowasa is also a defiant must if you like octopus and wasabi. Pairs really well with sake. Service was good and food came out relatively quickly. So...although the food was definitely on par or quality for a Japanese restaurant, I was quite sad to see that they didn't serve skewers during lunch as that was what we were Jones-ing for. But let's go over what we ate anyways. Parking here is in a little parking lot that's shared with other small stores. I arrived at noon and there was only one other table that just sat down but by the time we left it was almost packed which was around 1pm. They have your typical donburis and lunch sets. I went for the sashimi set which included an orange, small salad, miso soup, and bowl of rice which went along with 3 slices of salmon sashimi, 3 slices of seared white tuna (I think), 2 slices of mackerel, and two slices of other fish which I couldn't determine what it was! This cost about $13 which is fair for the amount of food you got. We got a cup of tea, but never got a refill. Good thing we asked for water since I needed something to drink! The servers were nice but were only really attentive when taking away food or bringing the bill. Overall, not bad for lunch, but I've definitely experienced better. Ate here for Saturday night dinner with the parents after a recommendation from a family friend. Worst mistake ever. Right when we opened the front door, I smelled that yakitori/grill smell--the small restaurant was FILLED with this bbq smell. If you're sensitive to smokey smells, I would advise you to bring a mouth mask--yes, it's THAT smokey. Arrived a few minutes after it opened at 6PM and the hostess immediately told us that we would have to finish eating by 7:30PM because of the next reservations. That was the first turn-off of the night! I understand you want to make money and maximize your sales, but keep that information to yourselves! We sat at a small table next to a couple of large parties, and our server gave us some steamed towels to wipe our hands--that reminded me of my childhood days when airlines used to hand us warm towels on international flights! That was such a unique part of their service that made me smile. The room is very small, I'd say with a max occupancy of less than 50 people. During dinner time, the atmosphere can even be described as romantic/intimate, but we had little kids in between our table so the environment was quite family-friendly. Food-wise, we started off with the daikon mochi balls (friend's recommendation), grilled squid, and sashimi salad. After we realized that the plates were on the smaller size, we told another server we wanted a bowl of ramen as well. The Japanese food here is legit, I will hand it to Ajito...meaning that they do lots of small bites and detailed preparation for their food. Ajito is a small business with what I would describe as "well-crafted dishes" and small bites--I wouldn't recommend coming here if you were on a budget and starving. Portion sizes here are small and definitely not your Americanized type of sushi place. Speed of service and organization are the main points I need to highlight during our experience. Our small sake also took a while to be delivered at the start of our experience, and every plate we ordered came out after 5 minutes of waiting...not bad! I totally understand because the plates are created with care and detail from the chefs. However, after we had the chirashi salad and the mochi balls, we sat at our empty tables for a WHOLE 30 minutes until we finally asked a frantic server (there were 4 servers running around the small shop, but none of them would pause to tell us what was going on with our last two dishes!) what was up with our grilled squid?! We reminded him that we also ordered a ramen and kindly asked if he could check the status of our orders. He promptly brought over our grilled squid and told us that we never put in an order of ramen :\ that was a disappointment. It seems like everybody else here has had great experiences with Ajito, but I'm not gonna sugarcoat my service-lacking dinner. I was pretty bummed that my parents were not satisfied with this place, and we all agreed we wouldn't come back here again. Ajito seems like a place for people who don't mind waiting around for their food, having lots of drinks/down time with other diners. But if you're in a rush, or are super hungry...you will definitely be forced to wait and probably wonder what's up with your orders. The food here is really good! The Salmon Avocado Tartare combines avocado and soy sauce over salmon, which is meant to be used as a dip for potato chips. The dish is super unique and balances different flavors and textures. Soy sauce and avocado go surprisingly well together and the softness of the salmon goes well with the crunchiness of the chips. They also make a tasty Beef Donburi and Chicken Yaki Udon, although these didn't make as much of an impression as the salmon. Overall, the food is good but it's a bit pricier than the average Japanese restaurants and individual entrees might not make you full. Maybe it was the time I walked in but there was this odd smell that isn't very inviting when you are trying to taste food. The salmon sashimi was ok. Ajito is the cosy Japanese Izakaya. Each time I visit the place, the waiter will greet me with a hot towel for warm welcome :) There are so many choices of authentic Japanese chicken skewers from the grill menu including chicken breast, chicken thigh, chicken skin, chicken gizzard/liver/heart. Most of these skewer comes with choices of salt or sauce flavor. They are all very delicious, especially paired with a glass of Asahi or Sapporo on a happy Friday night. As for the appetizer, they offer a wide range of items, like Edamame, cold Tofu, monk fish liver, Sashimi and very big list of deep fried items. I love their potato croquette very much. The potato and stuffing is so soft and the panko is just at the right amount to hold the internal stuff and is also very crispy. Speaking of the main dish, each time I visit Ajito, the Soboro Donburi is the go to dish for me and my girl friend. The grounded chicken is marinated and simmered in a magical way. Paired with chopped scallion and soft boiled egg on the top, it is simply amazing. For payment, Ajito uses some sort of interesting mobile device which can take credit card, Apply Pay, Android Pay and more. This makes this classic Japanese Izakaya feel modern and stylish. This is the first time I've gone out for Yakitori and what an experience it was! The waiters were extremely helpful, nice, and patient with our questions. They gave us some suggestions on what to try and they know their stuff! We came in with an adventurous attitude, and ordered chicken hearts, gizzards, and beef tongue. All 3 of these were a hit! There was a great charred taste on the meats and was a great introduction into Yakitori! We also ordered squid potato balls, and unagi with rice which were equally amazing. These two were more common, safe choices, but still tasted great! Overall this is definitely a hidden gem that would be great to go to with a group of friends to eat crazy foods and drink! read more
