A solid sushi spot! I visited on a Thursday evening, and it wasn't super busy, so we were seated immediately. The atmosphere of the store was welcoming and casual. It was decorated adorably and had plenty of seating. The service was efficient and speedy. They have a combo deal that's a good price. You can get two separate entrees for around $25, with each entree being a smaller size. It also comes with miso soup and salad. I highly recommend the katsu chicken: it had a lovely crispy exterior and paired well with the zesty dipping sauce. The teriyaki chicken was unremarkable and a bit tough to chew - it was unfortunately a skip. I really enjoyed the double salmon roll - the salmon was fatty and delicious. The spicy tuna roll was another skip. I'm usually not bothered by an extremely fishy taste, but the spicy tuna roll was noticeably fishy and unenjoyable. Dined at Toki Sushi to celebrate a birthday on a Tuesday night, and got seated right away when we arrived at 6:20pm. There was plenty of convenient parking in the plaza as it's located right next to Safeway. Inside ambiance was clean and minimal, with comfortable booths large enough to fit 6, so our party of 3 was just fine. Our server was attentive and food came out pretty fast. The restaurant filled up throughout the night but was never full, and we were able to stay all the way until closing just chatting without any complaints. One thing I noticed right away is the affordability of the rolls here, especially for the Bay Area! Most were around $15 or less and their lunch bentos are even cheaper! Will have to come back if I'm ever in the area for lunch time. Dinner combinations were normally priced but had the options of sashimi and/or specialty rolls which I don't usually see at other Japanese restaurants. 2 Item Dinner Combo: I ordered beef teriyaki and Chef's Choice sashimi (5 pc) and the portion was pretty good! They served a whole skillet of beef which was probably double the amount of meat I'm used to seeing in a bento. And the sashimi cuts were SO GOOD. Thick cuts but super buttery and fresh at the same time, wow! San Francisco Roll: The best roll we ordered! I'm sad it only came with 5 pieces because this one was really good. Lots of fresh fish inside (3 kinds!) and not too saucy, to really highlight the fish. Lion King Roll: I don't usually order Lion King but they slightly overdid the unagi sauce on this one, making everything sweet. Honestly really happy we stumbled into this sushi spot. We came in right before they closed mid day. I was kind of confused because MAPS app said they were open until 9pm but when we arrived we saw they had posted new hours on their door. Idk anyways we made it on time. Lunch bento is really cheap for $12. Some dishes are very cheap and fair. The dinner entrees (rolls and combo meals) are also very large. A 2 item combo is $25 and a 3 item combo is $37. Each item is really big (especially the chicken teriyaki!) and the salmon item is almost as big as the separate entree. The 5 item sashimi as part of the combo had thick, fatty salmon but the hamachi sashimi had lots of silverskin. Notes: the salad dressing had peanut and the miso soup is a little sweet imo. Portion sizes are quite large. You could feasibly order two rolls between two people and leave content. The two entree set might even be enough for two people on its own. The fish quality though is a bit lacking. It's not as fresh, but the dishes are pretty saucy in an attempt to drown out the fish flavours. In terms of rolls, we got the Lion King Roll and the Volcano King Roll. Both were pretty good flavour wise, and the Volcano King Roll was a very large portion. A lot of people saw our order and decided to get one too. As I said before, the fish wasn't the best. We also got a two entree set with beef teriyaki and chicken katsu. I would avoid the beef teriyaki altogether as it is very tough. The sauce is good though, and pretty flavourful. The chicken katsu wasn't too bad, but they seem to err on putting a lot more batter than usual. Overall, not a bad place. We last minute decided to come here on a random Wednesday night for a team dinner. The restaurant was kind enough to accommodate all 9 of us at late notice. We ordered a bunch of appetizers including the lobster tail, baked mussels, karaage, tempura, fried calamari, and some rolls to share like the volcano roll, scallop roll, cucumber roll. Cozy clean interior. We were seated at a booth. We shared the negihama, San Francisco roll, and 10-piece omakase sashimi. Negihama was solid, fish quality was good, minimal but seasoned well. San Francisco roll was pretty good too. Every single piece fell apart as we were picking them up, which made it messy and hard to eat. Service was nice, inside had a lovely ambiance, there was a line waiting to be seated or to pick up food and about ~30 seats inside. Lots of parking. Alright that's covered, onto the food. Quick summary of the food if you don't want to read all that: big portions, good fried food, tough beef, mid at best flavorless fish in either rolls or sashimi. The portions are generous and the fried food was done well. I got the combination plate with beef teriyaki and chicken katsu. Both great portions and they came out first. I would get the chicken katsu again but would not get the beef as it was pretty tough to chew. The soft shell crab and the combination tempura were also fried well and well portioned. The shrimp tempura were gigantic. I would come back for these. Now onto the less desired. The quality of fish in either the rolls or omakase were just... not good to say it nicely. The portions and cuts were huge, but the fish itself was watery, flavorless, and had that frozen texture to it. Yes, fish needs to be commercially frozen to be safe to consume, however, this had the texture of cheap fish. Like haven some frozen boba, but in terms of fish. So the omakase had nice big slabs of flavorless fish, of which, the staff didn't inform us of what each fish was. Typically it would be explained as it is the chef's choice after all but it wasn't. Fortunately, we already know which fish was what. The sushi rolls, using the same fish, were also leaving much to be desired. The tropic mango roll had more cream cheese than fish, enough said. The winter roll seemed interesting but had no flavor and was watery from said fish. Overall, big portions with good fried food. As for the fish, mediocre at best. read more

To avoid the rush hour traffic after an appointment in Palo Alto, we decided to have dinner nearby before heading home. Toki Sushi looked promising in my Yelp search and we were were happy with our first experience. Parking was easy, the interior looked relatively new, clean and spacious. A 10 piece sashimi omakase 4/5 We received a total of 11 pieces of salmon, hamachi, tuna and white tuna combined. The fish tasted very fresh and of good quality, the cuts were also quite generous. One order each of toro nigiri and aemaebi nigiri, both were excellent and reasonably priced. The shrimp was crunchy in a good way which I enjoyed. A roll of double salmon, again fresh and tasty and we were glad to see the salmon on top was more than just paper thin unlike some other places. The only dish we were not impressed was the Salmon Kama on sale for $7.95....very small which was OK but tasted reheated from precooked fish. Not the best. Over all, the sashimi/sushi were excellent and portions were generous for the price. Not too sure about other dishes although portions looked quite large. Went to Toki Sushi for lunch today to try a number of their special rolls! Great portions and presentation. Our favorite for the taste was the Downtown Roll, it was versatile with different fish on top and unlike the Capital Dream roll still had rice and a nice filling so we liked it a lot. The Capital Dream was slightly fried outside but the flavor of the fish was bland unless dipped in a lot of soy sauce (our preference). We'd skip that one next time. My friend got the Lion King roll (I normally don't order cooked sushi) but it was absolutely delicious and really flavorful with the toppings, our second favorite! The tropic mango roll was interesting on the inside but the mango on it wasn't really ripe/didn't really taste like anything, so we were missing the real mango flavor. Very average Miso soup, a large bowl of iceberg lettuce salad with a ginger flavored mayo dressing and a large bowl of steamed rice came first. Next was a large mound of deep fried uniform Calamari strips with dipping sauce. The breading was crispy unseasoned and the squid was tender. We had the #4 combo chicken katsu $11.95 and #6 combo saba mackerel $11.95. Each one came with miso soup, salad, California roll, and orange. My companion subbed his CA roll for his favorite which is 2 pieces of tuna sashimi. My only complaint that the saba quantity was super small. It looked sparse. What do you want for $11.95. Saw this place on TikTok and knew that I had to pay it a visit. Went an hour before their lunch hours ended, so there weren't many people there. The interior is so nice and I couldn't stop looking around. Ordered the calamari, plain udon, and the 10 piece sashimi omakase to try a variety from the menu. The sashimi was DELICIOUS. I knew most of the fishes on the plate, but the singular fish I didn't know was my favorite. For $25.95, the sashimi omakase was definitely worth it. I also got way more than 10 pieces which I was very happy to see. The plain udon was honestly just like a warm hug. For less than $10, I would 100% get this over and over again. Lastly, the calamari was honestly not my favorite. I'm such a sucker for calamari so I was a little disappointed to find that it wasn't as good as the rest of the meal. A new sushi spot has arrived! We came around lunchtime; it wasn't too busy, so we were seated quickly. There's both paper and digital menus (the latter of which you can submit orders on, if you don't want to chat with the friendly staff). We ordered a Lion King roll, a 3-item house combination (with sashimi, a salmon double roll, and a rainbow roll), and an agedashi tofu. The items of the combination came out pretty fast. There was a mistake in the kitchen - they had accidentally swapped the toppings of the rainbow roll and the double salmon roll, leading to a much more special rainbow roll than ever before (especially considering that there was a little bit of otoro! a first for rainbow rolls for us!). The fish quality of the rolls is great, but nothing compared to the sashimi. The pieces they gave us were huge, and incredibly tender. Your teeth sink right through! The agedashi tofu came next. Here, the tsuyu broth is served separately, but no one's stopping you from just pouring it all in. The broth is light, as advertised, and the tofu is crispy on the outside, and light and fluffy on the inside! The coating doesn't fall off easily, which is a plus. The lion king roll, as expected with any baked roll, came last - pretty well after we had finished almost everything else. It was incredibly creamy and rich! If you have the time to wait (and are willing to watch your companions finish everything ahead of you), I'd recommend it. Our biggest complaint is that some of the rice was overly vinegar-y, but other than that, it was an amazing meal! read more

I came here after seeing a post about the grand opening on Nextdoor (of all places ahha). Anyways, I checked it out and was really impressed by the huge portions, taste, flavor and the aesthetic of the restaurant. It looks so luxurious and clean, with the new decoration. I got takeout - Tuna nigiri Hotate nigiri Shrimp temp roll Spicy tuna Asparagus temp roll The staff weren't super friendly ... but nice enough. The shrimp temp roll was very mayo-y with the crab mix. More like all mayo- and the shrimp was translucent. Not good. The asparagus tempura roll- would have been good but the asparagus used was realllly tough and old. Fibrous. Could not swallow, it was the eating the very ends of the asparagus spears. Spicy tuna roll- ok Tuna nigiri- ok Hotate nigiri- probably the worst I've ever had. No joke. Do not order this here. It was watery tasting and had a weird texture. I had it torched too. Ended up searing the other scallop- but even cooked- it has a weird taste to it. Chemical taste and lots of water seeped out in the searing process. I tossed it. The rice in general is overcooked- mushy. Less water is needed. The cucumbers were sliced perfectly! I appreciate the skilled knife work cuz it changes how the sushi tastes, adds a really nice mouthfeel. Based on these orders I'm not sure I could recommend this place and I wouldn't come back. New spot on the corner and it's pretty solid. I'd give it another 6 months and they should have the operational stuff down. We had the cucumber salad, salmon kama, a baked scallop roll and the usual nigiri (tuna, yellowtail, salmon). The fish was fresh but I wouldn't get the cucumber salad or the baked roll again. Cucumber salad was just cucumber in rice wine vinegar that tasted like it was just splashed on seconds before we ordered it and topped with sesame. The baked roll had good flavor but the rice was falling apart and it ended up looking like a bibimbop bowl instead. The sushi rice needs a bit more seasoning and less heavy. I would come here again and have their other cooked dishes and sashimi next time. read more

We arrived at 8:35 when the stated Sunday closing time was 9:00. They had already piled chairs on tables while other diners were eating, a big no-no in my book. They warned us the kitchen closed at 9:00 but by 8:45 they were pressuring us to order right away because the kitchen was closing. The service was otherwise courteous and they were generous with the serving of lemon I asked for. Not planning to go back. The gyoza was fried on all sides, as if the entire gyoza were just deep fried. It's supposed to be pan fried on just one side. The fish was not handled and prepared well. Check out my pictures: while I appreciate the big cuts, salmon was very "meaty" (like biting into a steak) and the silver skin was not removed. This was not a buttery cut of salmon and hard to get down. The hamachi, again while I appreciate the large cut, it was waterlogged. You can see it. That's not shiny oil, it's water!! Finally, the Toro, had lots of silver tendons running through it. Hard to get through that. I was really hoping for a good (fish) experience given its proximity and lower price than others. Ambiance is my favorite aspect of Toki. The lighting, seating, ventilation is all good :) Portion sizes and price also fantastic. And overall quality is solid. It's clear that at the price point you have to give something up. The fish is good _for the price_, but yeah if you're expecting Sushi Jin or Katsu level fish, it's just not happening. I still think the food is very worth it, just set your expectations accordingly for their fish. E.g. the Toro was barely Toro at all imo, and not worth getting. I liked the fatty Salmon the best as far as the fish went. Ikura was good. Service: they are very busy, so you have to advocate for yourself a little. Staffing is expensive, so front of house seems minimally staffed, but that's not unique to them. The staff we interacted with are very nice and responsive! We had a small issue with an order (disliked ingredient that wasn't listed on the menu) and they immediately switched it out for us, no questions asked. read more

We were looking for a fairly close sushi takeout place and decided to check it out. - 49er roll: salmon, tuna, hamachi - generous on the fish - Super dragon roll: the side shell crab was nice, but the imitation crab had way too much mayo - California roll with real snow crab: the real snow crab upgrade option was nice, but it was too much mayo for me - Jalapeño special: with your choice of sashimi on top (we did hamachi). The hamachi had some scales, and there was a big dollop of mayo on the jalapeño, which was a bit excessive - To go box: we chose saba - inexpensive but a small portion - Grilled sanma: a good add on option Overall, portions were generous but maybe a bit much because I actually prefer thinner slices of sushi.
