AJ's is everything I like in a local cafe. Kind of hidden and off the beaten path, small, friendly. I went with my grandmother and she knew you could only pay cash otherwise I would have been caught off guard. I wouldn't want to not have a way to pay for my meal if it came down to it. We both got the chicken fried steak, eggs, and hash browns. Don't forget the pancakes. It was phenomenal. Our waitress never left her smile and even dealt with my talkative grandma. Brunch with my daughter. Always prefer a local place over the chains. Severely disappointed that the CFS was a prefab, frozen patty straight off the truck. Not even a good one at that. Why bother? It should say on the menu, "We're cutting corners here and don't want to learn how to hand-bread a simple, tenderized cube-steak that we'd be proud to serve ... so we're giving you this cheap facsimile instead." Sorry, too many places do it right for this to be acceptable. Also, watch your ticket. They just "do it in their head" and don't give you an itemized bill. Almost all items on the menu were the same price, so this would be a typical price for almost every meal. For a filling plate of food and unlimited coffee, the price was more than reasonable, especially compared to many other breakfast places in Omaha. Along with the wonderful food, the customer service at AJ's Cafe was superb. Warm greetings made everyone feel welcome, and the waitress was fast, friendly, and caring towards each customer. AJ's has been on my ever-expanding "to-try" list for about a year. This year, I made it the destination for my birthday breakfast. I think this will be a permanent decision. My husband and I tried AJs for the first time on Supwrbowl Sunday. We arrived around 10:30 am and the restaurant was packed. We waited less than 5 minutes and several tables opened up. This place has everything I want in a diner. Good food, prices, and service. I went for breakfast. The dining area was small and packed and had a few more people waiting to be seated. The hostess greeted us quickly and after a few minutes found us a couple spots at the counter . The menu was pretty straightforward as they weren't trying to do anything excessive. The prices were reasonable and the portions were plenteous. I was surprised when the food came out so quickly. The servers were friendly and got things done promptly. AJs is a hidden gem on North 90th, the only reason to know it is here is that it is just north of the Library Bar. I had their Husker Hashbrown Casserole (Bacon, Ham, Sausage, Onions and Mushrooms), in an old fashioned Breakfast joint. The only reason not to give the place 5 stars was the fact that whenever the front door opened, cold air just filled the room quickly, and those in the front totally feel this event. read more

They must use butter flavored oil here cause everything was sooo good. I usually don't eat all the potatoes but did THIS time! BF had hamburger steak. It was good but not enuf for him. We went to AJs on Saturday morning because our other fav breakfast place had too long of a wait, I'm definitely glad we went. AJs had a wait as well but it didn't take too long to get a table. Service was attentive, the food was reasonable and the portion sizes were good. I had french toast with 2 eggs and sausage, the french toast was really good and my eggs were cooked just right. My fiancee had biscuits and gravy with hash browns and toast, the gravy was great, not too peppery and quite tasty. Basic cafe breakfast food, eggs, omelets, etc. Hashbrowns are those kind of greasy masses of shredded potatoes that are grilled a bit. I prefer the _fried_ kind of greasy masses of shredded potatoes. :) Inexplicably, does not accept debit cards nor credit cards (Yet takes checks? Clearly not a business decision...). Which honestly feels a bit creepy (Credit card numbers are the mark of the beast? Managed by Wesley Snipes? Traumatic credit card injury when they were a kid?) and resulted in me having to leave the table and go find an ATM since I missed the sign on the door inside the little wind tent thing. I do enjoy this cafe. The service is friendly and efficient. Its always quick especially for a lunch hour. The food is standard cafe-diner food. It's delicious but not outstanding. Had the philly melt. The flavors were like philly but served in Texas Toast . Supposed to be sour dough but pretty sure was Texas toast. Still yummy but not traditional. French fries typical diner fare. My biggest complaint is that they do not accept a debit card. They have an ATM machine in the dining area for cash. I would think the cost of the machine would be the same cost to provide the service of people being able to use a debit card. It's 2017, accepting debits cards is progressive and expected. read more
