A hidden gem. I've seen this place in passing but the building looks deceiving. I finally made it a point to stop in for lunch and it is the CUTEST deli. The vibes were cozy and I loved the array of workers ages I felt like I was at a grandparent's restaurant. They definitely take pride and joy in this place. You order at the counter and the sandwiches come with sides AND a pickle! They have many different side options we opted for the two potato salad options one was a savory bacon and the other one was the original with a mustard. Sandwich I had was the mad Italian and my husband had the meatball. Service was so fast we maybe waited 10 min max. We had the pleasure of eating here for the first time. It won't be our last. The deli is rather small but had comfortable seating and was clean. The team there were all very nice and helpful. Most importantly, the food was great. My wife had the Dorfino sandwich with a side of chips and drink. I had the Mad Italian sub with chips and a drink also. Both meals were very good and the sandwiches were full of meats and cheeses. To top it off, just before we were leaving, a team member brought us out a complimentary butter cookie desert in celebration of Valentines Day. Well done! read more

Fortunato's Italian Deli is on Tanque Verde, just east of Catalina Highway. I have driven by thousands of times since we moved to far northeast Tucson over twenty years ago, but somehow didn't take advantage of one of the few restaurants within four miles of me. Tonight I made things right and ordered in, courtesy of Door Dash (who was timely, efficient and followed delivery directions - yay!) I tried the Crispy Beef sandwich on marble rye. The rare and tender beef was literally piled high on the fresh and flavorful bread. The beef was covered with crispy onion bits that added so much interest and the horseradish provided its special zing. I chose macaroni salad as my side, and it was pleasantly vinegar based and not mayonnaisy (which may not be a word, but you know what I mean) with lovely briny olive slices. I will definitely patronize Fortunato's again, and hopefully try another delectable-sounding meal, but it will be difficult to ignore the Crispy Beef. If the next one is as good, I'll bump up to five stars. read more

My 1st experience at Fortunato's and I didn't love it. Staff was super friendly and I was kind of excited when we walked inside. Reminded me of a deli/store I would see on Guy Fieri's DDD. Loved all the booths jammed in there so I'm guessing the place gets busy.....or they used to? The fact that the display case was empty really disappointed me. I was expecting to see it full of meats, cheeses, Italian dishes ready to be served. And there was a small display of grocery items to purchase - some pasta and something else. It was kind of sad. We were there around 2 or 3pm on a weekday so maybe the weekends are busy and the case is full? Neither of us were starving so we decided to split a sandwich and went with the Mad Italian minus the jalepeno. I guess I didn't ask enough questions because I thought the "house dressing" served on the sandwich would be an oil & vinegar/Italian type dressing. WRONG. It's a mayo based dressing and I am in the I HATE MAYO category so the sandwich was ruined for me. My fault, I guess. The bread, meat and cheese were good but I had to deconstruct my half of the sandwich and wipe everything off. My guy ate his as it came and he said it was good. I want to go back and try a hot sandwich or some lasagna but you can bet I'll be asking plenty of questions prior to ordering. read more

A true Italian deli is a gem to find. As a guy who lived on Greasy Tony's as an undergrad at U of A in the '80s I love subs. Fortunato's smells great and the sub was excellent. I have DoorDashed this place a couple times when I want a good sammich. The Titanic is a giant sammich with different meats and cheeses. I get mine with Italian dressing. Everything is fresh, the lettuce, the tomatoes, everything. It is always wrapped well and isn't a mess with hen I open it. Their pickles are great. I also have tried their potato salad, which is also tasty. I give them points for service too because they have written thank you on the packaging. My daughter wanted an afternoon luncheon after her late morning wedding rehearsal and we decided to go with an Italian deli for the catering. The owner sat with us and helped us decide how much food was needed and made a few suggestions about assortment of meats and salads. We ordered the Cold Cut Buffet for 40 (roast reef, ham, turkey, Genoa salami, swiss, provolone, and Muenster cheeses) with potatoe salad, macaroni salad, and rolls. Included were mayonnaise, mustard, pickles, and black pitted ripe olives included. This came on two beautifully arranged trays that fed our guests very well. There were enough leftovers for later lunches, but not an excessive amount. We feel the owner was very helpful in helping not to over order the food. Everyone was impressed with the freshness and flavor to the trays and the salads. I would definitely recommend this deli for catering and sandwiches. A word of caution, though. This is a small business which is very busy at lunchtime. Our poor planning had us arrive to place the order right at noon. Ended up coming back later in the day, around 3, and the owner had plenty of time for us. read more

I have eaten here for years. Covid was hard on everyone especially restaurants so I am giving them the benefit of the doubt. The dophino is my go to however it was not to be this time around. The sandwich cost nearly double but the sandwich was smaller and the quality took a half day off. There were edges of the turkey that were inedible due to overheating/cooking in a microwave or oven. Not sure which one as I didn't oversee the sandwich build. All of the sandwiches are delicious and made fresh, usually. Also, I ordered the potato salad and received mac salad, not the end of the world, but not what I ordered. I will try them again for sure. The hours of operation are hit and miss. The potato salad is not home made. I have only eaten one sandwich they sell. Perhaps I am crazy, but I love it. It's also good to see an old sight for sore eyes, Tim. He used to own Coaches Deli and I woukd eat there multiple times a week, now they had a hell of a potato salad! I always get the Titanic Sub. The bread is fabulous, it kicks the hell out of any chain offering and I have eaten at most of them. The bread really makes the sandich imo.
