I've been wanting to stop in to try the Sausage Deli ever since my daughter began attending UA four years ago but never had the opportunity. Noon, on our way out of town moving her home, I made it our final stop. Should've come here years earlier. I had no idea of the longevity of The Sausage Deli until entering this place. I read the framed articles on the wall and learned how beloved they are. They mainly have sandwiches and are made to order, old school style. The sides are prepackaged in the deli case at the counter. I had the Italian Grinder, my wife had the Salami Sub and my daughter had a make your own sandwich. I had the sides of macaroni salad and potato salad. These sides were bland but maybe that's to compliment the flavorful sandwiches? I loved my Italian grinder and all the items inside it. The prices are fairly reasonable here and the service was great. You order at the counter and they call out your number when it's ready. Thinking back on my experience here, I don't remember seeing sausages anywhere....Hmmmm......Wonder why? read more

I think this is a discount deli, yes I know the prices don't seem it but they're still cheaper than most places. This discount is seen in the microwave and small size. I ordered a reuben sub, sausage and pepper sub, and a artichoke salad. The salad was a pasta salad with a generous portion of artichoke and was okay. The reuben wasn't good. The few slices of corned beef was not good, im guessing it wasn't brisket and some cheaper cut of beef as im seeing more now. There is no replacement for brisket. But what saved the day was the sausage and peppers it was delicious. But they only have that on Wed, so mark your calendar. read more

As someone who doesn't even like sandwiches, I was surprised that Sausage Deli has been rated as "mid." I stopped by on a Saturday, and it was pretty busy. I waited around 15 minutes for six sandwiches, then took them home. I ordered the Black Dog and the Susie Sorority--and wow, I loved them both. The Black Dog was warm and yes, a little soggy, but honestly, that felt like part of the experience. It was the perfect savory, heavy, satisfying sandwich. The Susie Sorority was the opposite vibe: refreshing and light for a turkey sandwich. I was surprised to find alfalfa sprouts--something I actually enjoy but don't usually see on sandwiches. Stopped here for lunch recently though I used to frequent this deli more often years ago. Hasn't changed and that's a good thing! My go-to always was the Susie Sorority but this time I opted for the Sausage Deli Club. It was made to order and I chose a 7" sub roll which was perfectly moist. You can add a drink and chips or a side. I got a small side of the potato salad and macaroni salad which were very fresh and just the right amount in my opinion since the sandwich is a generous size. My lunch mate ordered the Bismarck which came out with nicely melted cheese and a good portion of roast beef. The restaurant has several TVs with sports on and many booths and tables to sit at. There are also tables outside when the weather agrees. Service was fast and friendly! Highly recommend if you're looking for a great fresh deli sandwich! read more

I have to start off by saying one thing I don't like is chef Mike in the kitchen yes that means the (microwave) there were 2 of them !! So I got the corn beef on rye supposed to be hot it was and it was so hot that I almost burned my hands so I knew there was a problem!! did they put my sandwich in the microwave?yes they did !! if I knew they were gonna put my sandwich in the microwave i would've never ordered a hot sandwich because one thing I don't like is Chef Mike if I wanted a microwave sandwich, I would've stayed home and made one myself!! so it was so hot it ruined my rye bread, never melted the cheese or made the corned beef hot My sister and I came here because she saw the sausage deli on the news and she wanted to go try this new place out or come to find out the place is not new. I have been coming here since the old location beginning in 88. I love the artichoke salad and the hot pastrami. The tuna is great as well. Very simple to order and wait for ones food. What I assumed was the owner was forcing us out at 4:45pm. They hinted at us leaving at 4:15 which was odd. If you're gonna advertise happy hour from 2-5... don't close at 5. You're missing out on most of your business that way. Decent prices. Mediocre food. Weird closing time. Sausage Deli is a well known local spot in Tucson, I decided to give them a try instead of going to a chain for lunch. Upon walking in was a little bummed to see Sara Lee Classic White and Fransisco Sourdough bread lining their shelves but saw Tilamook cheese and hoped their other ingredients were high quality. Decided to ask if they were serving Boar's Head meats and their team said it's from Shamrock but "just as good". After eating my sandwich the lettuce was a bit old, light on some of the toppings I asked for, and meat was just alright. Sausage Deli has been around for well over thirty years. It had been five years since my last visit and I was craving a sandwich. My husband called our order in for pick up. He got the Italian grinder and I got the Suzie Sorority. The sandwiches remain generously sized and filled with deli meats and all the other fixings. We found the bread to be on the stale side. Sausage Deli is one of my longstanding favorite Tucson spots and my go-to spot when I'm in the mood for a great sandwich. My favorites are the Vegetarian Delight and Susie Sorority, and I also really enjoy the pasta salad and fries. Sausage Deli can get busy during the lunch rush, but there's always plenty of parking and the wait is never long and the staff is friendly and happy to make recommendations. I've been a regular visitor to Sausage Deli since I moved to Tucson 20 years ago and they've done a great job of keeping their prices as low as possible, even with a building upgrade/remodel and inflation. Awful. Anyone giving this place a good review has never eaten in a real delicatessen. Was really looking forward to an overstuffed corned beef Reuben. Huge disappointment- small portion, no thousand island dressing, couldn't find the cheese. Cole slaw tastes like oxidized refrigeration and cannot fairly be called slaw. It was inedible. Advice to owners: pay a visit to some real delis then have a hard look in the mirror and ask yourself why. read more

everytime i come here everyone is so kind and ready to help customers. my favorite item on the menu is the sausage deli club and i love how customizable all of their sandwiches are. they also make it easy to call in and place an order if you dont have the time to go in and wait. there's a lot of seating and a nice open bar to watch the game with plenty of beer to choose from. i 100% recommend this place and i always look forward to my next visit! read more

I'm a Tucson native, but strictly an east coast fan when it comes to authentic pastrami/corned beef, let alone a simple deli that offers nice verities for deli food - It can be super hard to find something out here that could even come close to NY's worst place, (which by other states, consider amazing).. This place has been here a while, I used to come when I was kid with my dad who's from NY, when the restaurant used to be around the corner from where it is now.. I finally tried Sausage Deli again after so many years, and it's definitely delicious, and is giving me authentic nostalgia and taste.... HOWEVER My only complaint, is that our sandwiches were SUUUUPER wet, and completely mushy. (I'm guessing from the sauerkraut)?? And was a total turn off and unsalvageable.. to me, this what other deli's would consider a huge "no no", and not something I'd want to bare through for the sake of the otherwise great corned beef. Hopefully the restaurant will better adjust, cause I want to come back since I'm needing a good NY alternative, but it isn't looking like any time soon. read more

This place is really clean and organized. I was greeted by a friendly young server behind the deli counter to take my order. He clearly explained to me that my name would be called when it's ready and I'd pay at that time. Awesome! Gave me time to use the bathroom! The prices are good and the cold sandwiches are ok. Edit July 19 2020. Went to Sausage Deli yesterday for lunch and the sandwiches were fantastic. We ordered Omar and Bismarck subs, the bread was fresh and the subs were loaded. The staff were all wearing masks. I'm glad they are back to quality service and food. I've been regularly going to Sausage Deli since the late 1980s. We've even ordered take out since the quarantine. It's always been exceptionally good. Except today. I ordered four subs and was told they didn't have sub rolls. No problem because they offered to make them with hoagie rolls. When we got home we realized that the hoagie rolls, being significantly smaller, were barely filled with the ingredients and the rolls were so stale they were inedible. I get that times are tough, but this was a major decline in quality and quantity in their food. Hope they fix read more

I forgot what about my first experience i was so enamored with. But i swung in for lunch and got the Special of the Day (BBQ), proceeded to get a drink, then realized they had a combo option for fries instead of chips. This is because they menu is all over the place, not streamlined in any way. I dont know if it was an option to add toppings to my bbq sandwich, but what i got was this shredded beef slop, with chunks of solid dry beef here and there. The sauce it was slathered in was tasteless. The fries needed salt. The fruit punch tasted like red colored water. And the pickle slices tasted like sliced cucumbers that took an overnight bath in a brine solution. Overall extremely lackluster flavors. read more

This place confuses me. It's called the Sausage Deli but only has Brats on Wednesday and not a lot of sausages on the menu. It's mostly just a deli, so they could drop Sausage from the name to be less misleading, but I am easily confused so maybe it's just me. Points for: Tasty cheese cake. Clean interior with plenty of seating. Entertaining menu board. Plenty of parking. Reasonable prices. Subtract points for sandwiches that are more bread than meat. An onion roll which is super heavy. Never been hear even though it's been around years. Normal sandwich shop type decore and feeling. I got the club and my friend got the black dog. For $8.75 for a normal size sandwich they are on the more expensive side. Although I will say it was a damn good sandwich! I also got a side of fries with their ranch and it was fresh and tasty. I haven't been to Sausage Deli recently, as in the last week, but I have been there consistently over the last 30 years. I sound old, but at least I'm going back to my high school days. The draw back then was the grinder lunch special with macaroni salad and it still remains the case today. Now the building is really nice and clean, kind of fancy from Sausage Deli's original days. Fortunately, the food is still the same and just as good. I highly recommend anyone wanting to taste a Tucson staple to give Sausage Deli a chance. read more

Service was good. Facility -- inside and out -- seemed spotless, and I really do mean spotless. The food that we ordered was just okay. I ordered a Reuben on rye for takeout. The sandwich didn't travel very far. We sat in our car in the parking lot with our dogs and munched our food there. I have two complaints about the Reuben: (1) the corned beef seemed more like pastrami, and I was looking for corned beef, and; (2) the bread steamed in the wrapper and nearly disappeared, having taken on a mushy and unpleasant consistency. The result wasn't terrible -- we did eat it -- but nor was it very enjoyable. This is not the place for a Reuben. But read the other reviews -- lots of people really like this place. Perhaps I just need to try a different sandwich. read more

Ever since I moved back to Tucson, I have been thinking about giving this place a revisit. I finally got that chance recently. This place has been around for many years, and should be on the bucket list of places to visit for all UA students. I have some fond memories of visiting during my college days where I was made fun of for my love of their famous Susie Sorority. Alas I was not craving the Susie Sorority at the time, but I did get my second go to, their meatball sandwich! The sandwich tasted a lot different than I remembered. While the excellent tasting marinara sauce and toppings remained the same, it seems like they now have more of a pork meatball than beef. That is no means a dealbreaker, as it was excellent as usual. But I thought it was worth mentioning. The seating in here has improved tremendously, with the dining area kept clean. I was very pleased by my dining experience. read more

The wife is a U of A alumni (couldn't get into the U of Oregon). This is her absolute favorite spot. We were her 7 years ago...The Omar sub is truly a work of art from flavor Heaven. It is ridiculously good. It may provide a cure for variety of ailments as the combo of the bread, meat, and dressing is made from angel's tears. While it is not the ghastly location it once was, meaning the area around it, it is not exactly a walk up friendly place. You need to travel in a small pack so that at least one of you will survive. The service is awesome, the vibe is very college but the food (just get the Omar sub seriously it is that good) is an A (U of A) plus. read more
