The experience was okay. The restaurant is gorgeous. Beautifully decorated. I was seated immediately but despite telling the hostess I was there for happy hour I did not receive the menu. I had to wait almost 10 minutes before a server brought it. I ordered the rock shrimp which was amazing and the waygu grilled wontons, which were a massive disappointment. The rock shrimp happy hour item came with over 10 very tasty rock shrimp. The wontons came with a whoppping 3. They were overcooked and fell apart, despite this they had ZERO crunch. Almost no flavor at all. I would come back for the shrimp but not the service or the wontons.

Such a fun spot to dine in and vibe to great music! Love the intimate atmosphere AKA offers and our Waiter, Cru was amazing. Loved the cocktail menu options and of course approved of their espresso martini. The potstickers were one of the best I've ever had- literally melt in your mouth! I also enjoyed my sushi roll as well. The dessert was so delicious we ordered creme brûlée and ended up with a free dessert/celebration which was so fun, as we were celebrating my friend's b-day! Would definitely recommend a visit!

What a fun club!! You can hear the music from the street, which instantly pulled us in. It was even more surprising when we found out there was no cover charge, say what?! Once inside, the place was impressive. The vibe is super Instagram-worthy, and the atmosphere was all about having a great time. The music was poppin' all night. I would definitely come back! From what I've read in other reviews, it looks like they also offer dinner here, which makes me even more curious to return. Drinks are reasonable so over all great first time here!

We were staying in the gaslamp area were looking for a fun spot to eat. I'm glad I chose this spot for a Friday night. It was so lively, beautifully and aesthetically decorated, and fun! It definitely was a place to go for celebrations because there were a few tables that got attention with lights and drinks which was pretty fun to watch. They have music going on in the background which adds to the vibe. The lighting is great. As soon as you walk in you see a lit up statue. Every so often a drummer comes out and drums to the beat of the music, which is pretty fun to be a part of. Our server was great and attentive. She was very helpful with answering any questions we had. We ordered the salmon skin salad, which was a unique flavorful taste. The saltiness from the salmon complemented the salad. Order two sushi rolls, which I can't remember what they were But they were both really good. I also ordered PadThai... It was definitely plenty for two people. So we ended up taking left over Pad Thai, which we normally don't. I will say it was amazing the next day too! We ordered two Sopporos and 2 sake to make sake bombs. I'd recommend doing 1 sake, and two Sopporos next time. Overall, we had a great experience, great service, great food, and great nights. I will definitely go again.

Food: 4 Service: 5 Ambiance: 5 We happened to stumble upon AKA Restaurant in on a fairly quiet weeknight. We didn't have reservations but were seated promptly, which was a great start to the evening. What first caught our eye was the super creative décor. There's a large statue in the middle of the room that really makes a statement, and inside the red, dark lighting gives the space a really cool, moody vibe. It feels a little sultry and dramatic, but still lively and fun at the same time. We were seated quickly and helped quickly. We ordered several items to share: the lamb chops, mango yellowtail sushi, salmon skin salad, and the lobster garlic noodles. For drinks, we tried an ube cocktail (forgot the name) and the lychee martini. The cocktails came out aesthetically beautiful and were also delicious and refreshing. We really enjoyed them. The food arrived pretty fast and not only looked gorgeous, but tasted just as good. I especially loved the lobster garlic noodles and the lamb chops. Both were super flavorful and satisfying. The mango yellowtail sushi was good, but not my favorite of the night. The true star of the show was the salmon skin salad. The salmon skin was fried perfectly, light, crispy, and absolutely delicious. It was honestly the best salmon skin salad I've ever had. Overall, the ambiance is really neat. It's dark and moody, but still has an energetic vibe. I highly recommend this spot for a date night, a girls' night out, or just a fun evening downtown. The service was excellent, the food was delicious, and the ambiance was on point. I'd love to come back later in the evening when it transitions more into a club/lounge vibe. It looks like it would be such a good time. Highly recommend for good food, good vibes, good service, and an overall great night out.

So we were visiting San Diego for Halloween weekend, and for our last night, we decided to go to the Gaslamp and grab a bite to eat. I chose AKA because it was open late. Honestly, this restaurant, which transforms into a nice lounge later on in the night, exceeded my expectations. We were seated immediately in this nice booth-type chair, which was very comfortable. The ambiance was really nice, and we were near the bar, where we could watch the World Series. Gaslamp was busy that night; honestly, I didn't realize it was still the day after Halloween. Anyways, we were seated right away and were given the menu immediately. These were the items we ordered: Lychee Drink (5/5): Not the actual name, but the drink was extremely well-made. A-5 Pandan (5/5): Another amazing whiskey drink. Appetizer: Singapore Tempura Rock Shrimp (5/5): By far the best rock shrimp appetizer I have ever had. It had some sweetness, but not overpowering. Seared Wagyu (5/5): Another amazing wagyu appetizer. Made really well, with a perfect texture. The sauce that came with it was very tasty as well. Main Entree: Both of these sushi rolls were amazing and were well-made. Is it pricey, yes, but I think the quality of their food was really good. Tempura Roll Mango Yellowtail After we finished our meal, we were waiting for our server to come back, but since it took him too long, we asked one of the ladies who worked there if we could order a drink, which she took. Unfortunately, the drink was forgotten, and we had to flag down our actual server to check on it, and we even had to explain to him that we ordered it from the female floor manager, I'm assuming. I decided to go down a star because of our server. After all our food was served, he didn't really check up on us anymore until I flagged him down to check for another drink and get our bill so we could pay for it. I understand they were transitioning to their night/club atmosphere, but you need to be able to balance that. You can't ignore your current guest due to a transition. Unfortunately, we decided not to stay longer since people started coming in to dance, but then there were females who were drunk dancing on top of a table. They eventually kicked them out, but when people get sloppy like that, it's usually my cue to leave the place. Overall, the food and drinks here are really good, and yes, it can be pricey, but I do think it was well worth it. The restaurant has an amazing ambiance and cool decor.

San Diego's coastline sparkles with culinary gems for daytime dining, but when it comes to nightlife, Gaslamp Quarter seizes the spotlight. You won't need window seating either because the interior is the vibe. AKA San Diego sits prominently on the corner of Fifth Ave and Market St where an Italian restaurant used to be. Through glass panes, passersby can glimpse at the prismatic lighting and vivid decor. With same day reservations, we were seated by the tall Buddha statue, curiously situated behind a DJ setup, peaceful but ready to party. We'd find out later that the beat's turned up for birthdays which numbered 2 that night. DJ and waitstaff made each celebration lively and fun. As impressive as the backdrop is, the focus remains the menu, an array of Asian fusion dishes that blend flavors with remarkable success. The succulent Yakiniku Filet Beef Satays, the creative Grilled Baja Jumbo Prawns with risotto cake, and the mouthwatering Bluefin Tuna Wasabi are just a few highlights. Many visitors flock to SD for surf and sun, but the city doesn't go dark when nighttime comes. Contrarily, this is when downtown hits the on switch, and AKA is one of the many glowing lights you can follow to find phenomenal dining with unrivaled ambiance.

We went with a large group for a business dinner slash belated bday bash. Food and vibes were Tao adjacent. They brought out champagne and had the DJ go crazy for my bday. Boys weren't super impressed with the steak but all of the appetizers and sushi were great. We had a lovely time. Restaurant is really large inside and great for a group.

Service was fantastic and Ercole was amazing, so I highly recommend asking for him if you're dining there. The ambiance is super unique and I heard it turns into a club on weekends, which is really cool. As for the food, it was pretty mid especially for the price point. Also, for a place advertised as Asian cuisine, it was surprising that most of the main entrées were steak-focused. I personally wouldn't go back for the food, but the experience and atmosphere were definitely memorable.

Let me start by saying james was outstanding gave me not only great options for both food but also Thai infused cocktails from the a5 pandan to the ming sling drinks were exceptional. I had the black cod it melted in my mouth and came with some beautiful veggies. The atmosphere was so unique they have a huge buddha in the middle where you can take pictures. not to mention this thai infused restaurant becomes a dance floor after 10pm me and my friends were celebrating a birthday and boy do they go all out a light show and music not to mention freshly imported mochi. I am not rating this place as a bad restaurant but I hope manager reads this and corrects few things. Friday night dinner,busy restaurant so yeah some delays are ok but 1- Ordered drinks(no cocktails,just soda/vodka/tequilas) 10 mins before we ordered appetizers.Appetizers came,we finished them,still no drinks. 2- Bar was empty so I doubt bartenders were having hard time catching up with drink orders. 3-Lamb chops carried the smallest amount of meat from any lamb chop i have ever seen in a restaurant in my lifetime. You shouldn't be charging that amount of money and give that little amount of meat. 4- Drinks to food timing was overall horrible,it just didnt work. When we didn't have food,we had drinks,when we didnt have drinks we had food. 5- Ordered a sushi roll to share cuz we didn't want to go ahead and get entrees cuz everything took too long,at $25-$30 a roll,meh sushi read more

No eye contact, food was the only thing that kept this from a 1 star review. We visit many establishments in the gaslamp quarter for food and beverages. My husband and I made a Saturday night reservation through OpenTable for our anniversary. Gorgeous design, energetic ambiance, awesome DJ, good food, but service was seriously lacking. It felt like we were waiting and waiting to get a glimpse of our server just so we could order more beers/cocktails. We waved down runners and other servers asking if we could put in a drink order through them, and they told us we could only place drink orders through our server. Pathetic operation. Food came out slow too. Additionally, it seemed the restaurant was giving out free desserts with a song for celebrations around us, yet, not once did our server with an Italian accent ask if we were celebrating anything. I had even put it down in the notes or "Special Request" section of OpenTable- so what is the point of that section if the restaurants don't acknowledge it? We ordered the yellowtail sashimi appetizer (great!), organic greens salad (great!), miso cod (on the sweet side), lobster garlic noodles (good, just a bit saucy), and the red chocolate lava cake (not a lava cake at all, no filling in the middle). For all we had, I don't think it was worth the $$$$. There are so many amazing restaurants in SD. read more

What a beautiful restaurant with great vibes. I was passing by I decided to eat here since it was not overly crowded like the other restaurants by my condo. It was our first time trying AKA, and to be honest I feel as if the hype about it was misleading. The waitress took a long time to stop by our table to take our order and get our order in. Our drinks came out about 30 minutes after we ordered, and one of the three drinks was spilled by the waitress onto my friend. She was drenched waist down in her drink, making the experience very uncomfortable. The food tasted okay, it didn't feel like we were at an upscale restaurant. It felt as if we just ordered sushi from any run of the mill sushi spot. The DJ was playing some interesting music, which did not make us want to get up and dance or even dance in our seats. Around the end of the night, we ordered dessert for my friend's birthday. We waited and waited and nothing came. We stopped another waiter passing by to ask about the dessert and candles, and he offered to bring us the dessert menu, as he had no idea what was going on. Our waitress circled back and then the dessert finally came out. I think staff needs a bit of time management training, and even drink bussing training to make sure other customers don't have the same experience as us. The restaurant is located in a busy street so I recommend taking an uber/Lyft or getting dropped off and picked up. There is no parking or valet nearby so prepare accordingly. Hope to stop by soon to better accommodations. read more

Awesome experience- I randomly wandered in after a few failed attempts at going to other places on 5th Ave in Gaslight SD. Food was delicious, it came out quickly and was cold/hot appropriately. This is an okay place if your intent is to enjoy the vibes, maybe get a cocktail and lounge. This is not a place you go to for a great culinary experience. The food wasn't bad, it just doesn't match it's price point. At this price point I expected great food, but got 'meh!' instead. I think most people go here for the "vibes" which is fine, but I can't recommend this place for a great meal. read more

I have been here for dinner 3 times and everytime is so special. The food is absolutely wonderful, the lamb chops are a must have, the pad thai noodles are so good, and of course the sushi! Definitely get yourself self the Geisha-rita to start. One of the best Margs in SD. The atmosphere is cool and vibey. The service is very good and the staff is very attentive. Would not recommend. Terribly slow service. Only 1 water refill in the 3 hours that it took for our table of 4 to be served dinner and a drink. When I went to find the restroom, half a dozen staff members were hanging out in the back despite no one refilling our water or checking on us following food being served. Food wasn't great. The salmon was syrupy sweet and crème brûlée was not torched. It seems like the place is more focused on the experience of club goers. Our reservation was for 7:15pm and halfway through our meal tables were being cleared and very loud music and dancing began. From then on we were completely ignored until we flagged a waiter down for our check. Definitely not worth the money. For the price I would expect better than disposable chopsticks. This is more of an Instagram photo or club pregame place than a flavorful dining experience. read more

Came here for Happy Hour and picked up most of their appetizers. Our waitress was very attentive and got the orders right. She told us the place had been open since Oct 24. Cool place. You can tell they really spent some money doing the decor right. Food was on point. Got sushi, baos, shrimp, chicken satay, and ribs. No complaints at all from the group. It wasn't very busy on a Wednesday night. Would come here again. read more

First let's start with the service. Everyone from the servers down to the runners were amazing and very attentive as well as friendly. As for the ambiance it was amazing not too dark not too bright just perfect and definitely great for a date night or a fun get together. Now on to the important stuff the food, if you're looking for a light delicate flavorful food you want to try this place everything from the appetizers down to the entrees were so packed full of flavor. Now remember they are a seasonal restaurant so menu is constantly changing so get in while you can as reservations go very quickly so give it a try. Highly Recommended. read more

Oh my God I went to dinner there last weekend with a friend and the food was so good! We went for restaurant week and I did try that menu and the food was spectacular! When I point out none of this is advertised anywhere, I'm informed it's on Open Table, and that we should've seen it there, and were dismissed. They said they could give us another restaurant recommendation and then proceeded to just dismiss us without even that courtesy. We go back to verify this age limit, and it's there... one TINY line 2 scrolls down on the page, WAY beyond any of the information needed to just book a table, which is the only thing Open Table is used for. Complete waste of time for a poorly advertised bar with zero helpful staff on a dumpy street by the airport.

His questions guided my indecision towards a Berkshire Old Fashioned that was fantastic despite my fumbling to get there. With the warm up round over and the old fashioned loosening up my creativity, round two was set to be a knockout. I love coffee (specifically strong espresso drinks), so I asked for a strong, coffee infused, punchy cocktail, but with a different base of alcohol from the old fashioned. What came out was the best cocktail I will probably ever have in my life. The bourbon cocktail with coffee liqueur (and a number of other garnishes I will never remember) hit the bullseye. Flavorful, strong, bold, delicious all at the same time. Unfortunately (?), this was a noble experiment so I'll forever be chasing the white whale of what this drink was. But that's the allure.

I was really looking forward to trying AKA, but unfortunately the experience was disappointing from start to finish. We arrived around 8:30 pm on a Tuesday evening, and the vibe immediately felt off. There was no hostess available to greet or seat us, and the front felt very unorganized. We were left standing there unsure of what to do, which created an uncomfortable and unwelcoming first impression. The atmosphere overall just felt off, even with the DJ there, it didn't create an enjoyable or inviting energy. My husband ordered a margarita, and after it was brought to the table, we were told they only had skinny margaritas available. That should have been communicated before the drink was made. He then asked for tequila neat, but it was brought out on ice instead, which again showed a lack of attention to detail. At that point, we didn't even want to continue correcting things. The food was the biggest letdown. For the price point, we expected quality and flavor, but everything came out bland and underwhelming. It simply did not justify the cost. Overall, the service felt disorganized, communication was lacking, and the food did not meet expectations. We sent the first one back because it was dry and tasteless, only to receive a second one that was just as bad. To make matters worse, during our meal, we noticed a waitress holding menus between her legs. This was not only unprofessional but also incredibly unsanitary. It made us question the overall hygiene standards of the restaurant. I expected better from a downtown establishment, and sadly, I can't recommend Aka based on this visit.
