As a person of Japanese heritage and living in the beach areas of Los Angeles, I do have to say I am bit of a sushi snob. We have our local go to sushi bar that we have gotten to know the owner (we actually have his cell phone number) and we know he goes almost daily to the fish market. He will have fresh specials and will even get us certain things if we call and ask him. With that said, I was surprised to see that Aki Sushi had chutoro and Blue Fin toro as well as Santa Barbara uni. The sushi here is solid but of course it pales in comparison to my favorite local jaunt. But I would come back here if I'm ever back in the area. read more

Cool ambience as soon as you walk in. Seating is a little difficult for larger people as I felt my body was protruding to the table next to us. The menus were dirty from people prior which is understandable since it's paper. The menu was quite vast and there was an omakase sashimi which was tasty and the tempera was yummy. I enjoyed the udon tempura as it was a perfect amount. Did feel a little rushed as they wanted to pack my food in a box while I still eating. Their green tea is the perfect temperature and taste with a cup you can actually drink out of versus on too hot. Reasonably priced, I would come back again. Minus 1 for feeling rushed. read more

I went here after I read the reviews and was expecting much better sushi. The sushi was ok, it was not 5 star good though. We had the California roll, a Dynamite roll a couple of others. The rice and inside (fillings) were very mushy. A lot of how I rate my sushi is by the taste, texture, and the after dinner results. I had that fishy taste after dinner that I usually don't get with other places. I would not say this place is the best bit its ok. We were also disappointed in the fact that we had ordered three rolls and only two came out. The third did not come out tell we were done with all of our other food. I personally will not be back, I would rather go to sushi ya! Or wit tell I got to the west side for way better sushi! read more

This was one of our favorite places. Unfortunately we sat by the door for 20 minutes without even being acknowledged. Then, we watched as the waitresses bused EVERY table in the restaurant and argued about how they would set up for the party of 8 that came in AFTER us. Just having moved from Seattle where Sushi is plentiful, my husband and I gotten used to having sushi regularly... so we have been searching for a good Sushi place on this side of the state... the hunt is over! I love this place! They have a great selection of Nigori/Sashimi fish along with an awesome specials list. My husband loves their Sashimi dinners with all sorts of different fish, I like to try picking out new fish to try and working my way down their fresh selection. Some of the best sushi I've had in Tri-Cities. It's a nice place with a comfortable upscale feel. They use fresh ingredients and you can tell. Great lunch specials, including drinks, appetizers, and roll combos. They have a good sized vegetarian menu as well so my vegetarian friend could have more than her usual cucumber roll and seaweed salad. A great place with great sushi. read more

Impressive. Good prices, especially for the quality, nice plating, and well prepared food. I agree with the sentiment that this is the best Japanese restaurant in Tri Cities - though I haven't actually tried the sushi. They've got a very modern interior and design aesthetic that they definitely spent a lot of time and money on - this is a trendy feeling place in a maybe not so trendy spot next to the old Red's hot wings, a beauty salon, barber and batteries plus. Everything from the decor, the menus presented on clip boards, the rock edging around the entrance, music, plating, etc, feels like a trendy spot in a bigger city. I had the crispy unagi, on happy hour special (which had some minor structural problems in getting from plate to mouth, but was very tasty), the veggie+shrimp tempura happy hour special, and the saba dinner. The tempura and saba are some of my go to barometer dishes for a Japanese restaurant, and both of them were aced here. The tempura was excellent, the batter was thin, crispy, and adhered perfectly, never coming away from the piece - even on something a bit harder like a slice of onion. Saba is easy to do well, but can be easy to mess up too - overcooking, slightly old (let's face it, it isn't the biggest seller on the menu), etc. This was cooked very nicely and tasted the clean deep flavor of a proper mackerel. My dining companion got the eel and rice bowl, which was also well prepared and portioned. You may have seen the oatmeal comic about small town restaurants serving food from Asia, vs bigger city restaurants serving food from Asia. In bigger cities, you get a Japanese place, a Thai place, a Vietnamese place, Korean, etc, etc - and in small towns you get the single generic restaurant that will serve pho, udon, sushi, bulgogi, pad thai, etc. Tri Cities has been on the small town end of that scale for a long time. We have excellent dedicated Thai and Lao options, but most others try to be everything to everyone. Places like Rice and Noodles can have excellent, focused food, but also have the safe options as a backup. This place is the first new non Thai/Lao restaurant in Tri Cities that focuses their attention on a single type of food, without feeling the need to hedge their bets by adding fried rice and orange chicken to them menu. They get big props for that in my book - playing the game without the sticky sweet sauce+lumps of chicken net is nice to see. Hey, you, staying at a nearby hotel - go the extra quarter mile here instead of Sushi-ya. It's worth it. read more

The staff was kind and friendly. It had a nice atmosphere. They were pretty busy with lunch rush. However, sushi was room temperature and tasted too fishy (fresh fish doesn't taste "fishy").
