The place is fine in my taste. Been here a couple times for lunch and there's always seatings which is nice, especially in such a large space. Very clean and friendly staff. And guided us on the differences with the lunch vs dinner menus. The food themselves was pretty good. The salmon especially. The nigiri pieces were small, but rice portions were tinnny which is perfect for us. It was actually well proportioned. And we were able to eat everything no problem it would be hard to over order. 4.5 Have been to the smaller Elmhurst location but it's been a while. Seeing so many posts on this new location so went for lunch. 7 train Main St-Flushing stop, metered and parking lots in the area. If willing to walk, park at Skyview which isn't that far. Some steps up to the dining floor. Long narrow area with tables leads to the more spacious dining space, with a view of the prep area. Light wood and beige colors, down to the wooden plates; very clean decor. To order, write the amount of each item on the paper menu. Helped that they indicate how many pieces are in an order, for most items. Did get surprised at the fried rice amount - a full bowl so would have ordered less for a taste. We were satisfied with most of the food. Not the fried scallops, fried squid and sushi pizza. And the signature rolls started tasting similar -if not deep fried, has a fried item inside (a lot with shrimp tempura). Sushi by piece was bite-sized with little rice so preferred those. No dessert on the menu. Only found out from a fellow yelper (thanks!) that if following Akino on IG, can get a Haagen Dazs ice cream bar (only vanilla with almond chocolate coating). A staff member said each follower gets 1 only, but other staff didn't even check and just asked how many we needed. This is my new go to spot for AYCE sushi! From the variety of fish to the range of raw to cooked items available on the menu, it has everything for everyone. There's even dessert which is Haagen daz ice cream bar! What I loved and was impressed by was how little rice there is in the rolls. That's exactly what you want at a buffet so you're not full on rice but actual fish. The sashimi slices were thin but still sufficient for texture. Easier to digest you can say. My only disappointment was the tempura shrimp and vegetables. The color and fry looked amazing but it was missing the crunch factor. My tempura vegetables were not crunchy at all, despite the batter being relatively thin and the color looking golden. The shrimp tempura wasn't the best I've ever had. The shrimp was present but the batter seemed just a little thick for my liking and not the crispiest. But my fried scallop was fried nicely and crispy but you can tell it's a different batter or rather, bought already coated and ready to fry. Still delicious. The restaurant is spacious with plenty of tables. Came on a Saturday for lunch and it was fairly empty for a weekend. Price on weekends is the same as dinner which is $47 pp. if you pay cash, there's $2 discount pp. in the end, for 2 people with 18% tip or so, it's about $120. Might seem pricy but I think for the quality, service and atmosphere, it's pretty worth for AYCE. Great space to do group gatherings. The bathroom is also spacious and clean. read more

My fiancé and I were craving sushi and came across this spot--and the fact that it's AYCE immediately had us excited. Since it's very popular, I highly recommend arriving early and signing into the waitlist on the iPad near the entrance. Our wait was about 30-40 minutes, which wasn't bad at all, and you'll receive a text when your table is ready. Just keep in mind there's a 15-minute grace period; after that, you'll lose your spot and need to rejoin the waitlist. The ambiance is warm and inviting with lighting that's just right--not too bright. The seating for a party of two is a bit close to neighboring tables, which wasn't my favorite, but it didn't take away from the experience. Ordering through the iPad was seamless and honestly amazing--I wish more restaurants did this. The servers were attentive throughout our visit, constantly refilling our water and clearing the table. Now for the sushi--I was completely blown away. Everything we ordered was incredibly fresh and delicious. The rice-to-fish ratio was perfectly balanced, and the preparation was top-tier. Absolutely awesome AYCE sushi place! The workers are super attentive, and they don't try to skimp on you at all. I tried a variety of everything they had on the menu, and it was amazing! To start, the beef teriyaki/sirloin was super tender and flavorful - we went for two rounds of this! Now moving onto their nigiri, they give an amazing fish-to-rice ratio, and don't try to stuff you with rice at all. In fact, they give even less rice than I would typically get at a normal sushi restaurant, and the same goes for their rolls! I got their hand rolls, which were filled with fish and whatever you opted for, and did not have an overwhelming amount of rice in there. Similar for their rolls as well. The only thing I'd say is I wish there were pictures next to each of the specialty rolls, because they had such a wide variety to choose from, it kind of got confusing which one was which. The only thing I'd say is that I got their sushi pizza (it was half falling apart, and not super crispy - I'm assuming it was still hot when they cut it, and kind of made it soggy and fall apart), but honestly, no complaints. I was very excited that Akino has opened in Flushing because I loved the Elmhurst location and there are not many AYCE sushi restaurants here. If you come on a weekday Mon-Thurs it is $45.99. Weekend Fri-Sun $47.99. Costs $2 less if you pay in cash. You are given 3 sheets of paper to mark your order and tea is free. There are a lot of options. The hot food items usually come out faster, but the servers themselves are attentive and responsive. The fish is fresh; they don't cut the pieces too thin and I like how the sushi pieces have very little rice. Some might even say there is too little sushi rice! Haha. My go to items are Yellowtail Jalapeño, Salmon Sashimi, Tamago, Shumai. I also enjoyed the Blissful roll and Black dragon roll. I think out of everything we ordered the only thing I would not recommend you get is the chicken wings. It was not good. So most orders are per piece, aside from the rolls. Honestly, I would probably skip on the appetizer section, it's pretty much a filler. Not to say the food isn't good, but that's not what you're really there for. However, there were some hits and misses . The sushi was good, but as you can see, they are small. But, if you open it, it's really not that small of a slice of fish and they give a very small amount of rice. The selection isn't too big and they only offer one variation of tuna and salmon. None of that fatty tuna or salmon belly. The sashimi option is only available with the dinner menu (which you can choose for lunch). . I particularly liked their handrolls, probably the best item if I had to choose, but the seaweed did absorb all the moisture from the rice and it became very chewy by the time it got to us. . Service is ok, there isn't a time limit, we were there for almost 2 hours. I can't even say if we got everything or not lol. We had 2 rounds. . Their soy sauce is house made, and on the sweet side. We dined here as a party of 10 for lunch on the weekend. We got there at open and it filled up pretty quickly. There was an issue w/ ordering on the iPad so many dishes didn't make it to our table unless we inquired and it still took till the end of the meal to get them, which kind of defeats the purpose of AYCE. We ordered rolls, sashimi and cooked apps and at first, things seemed to come out at an OK pace, then stopped mid-way for a way too long pause of absolutely NO food. We had to flag the waiters down who tried to rectify the iPad ordering dilemma. We and they couldn't tell what had been already fired up as they were existing in the "queue"... items did not disappear if they were already brought to the table. This ended up with many dishes being brought at the end of the meal when everyone was full after the long intermission. The servers themselves were not bad, just not a great experience for everyone in the group. Disclaimer: I've been to Akino twice, both times for lunch. Our first visit was a great experience. The service was excellent, the sushi and sashimi were fresh and delicious, the appetizers were solid, and the pricing felt fair -- a little over $30 for lunch. We left happy and looking forward to coming back. Unfortunately, our second (and last) visit was very different. While the service remained attentive and polite overall, we noticed the lunch menu no longer included sashimi. To get sashimi, you now have to order from the dinner menu, which starts around $45+. You can still order sushi (fish over rice), but when I left a block of rice on my plate, I was literally told by the waitress to eat the rice if I was going to order sushi as she cleared the table. That interaction felt uncomfortable and unnecessary. Also, wasabi being served in ketchup-style packets is a bit of a red flag for a sushi restaurant. It's disappointing because our first visit set a high bar. My friend and I managed to get a table walk in on a random Wednesday and we were impressed by how the place was set up/how you can just order from the iPad. It overstaffed but which don't mind if they know what they are doing . Seen to be disorganized . Forget about the floor manager she just stand there look pretty not even reading and coming over the table to see if you need anything . I think they do need some training on that level.. I feel the hosts at the front seating us is more friendly . LOL Foods is average. I was pleasantly surprised by akino. I went for lunch special on we weekday so I didn't have to way much before being seated. The staff were attentive and nice. Their decoration is very pretty and clean. I like that they switched their ordering system to the tablet so you can send your request directly to the kitchen. These are all great things but not much different than other AYCE sushi joints. There ARE two things I find very unique and appreciate a lot about akino. 1) certain kitchen items you can order by the piece!? Tempura and most fried stuff are 1 piece per order which is so good if you're going by yourself or a small group and want to try everything. A lot of times they come a few pieces per order and that fills me up so fast so it's very nice they do that. 2) they actually don't overload their sushi pieces and rolls with rice, they put just enough rice to keep the roll together and the sushi have so little rice in it that the fish look folded. That is usually not how an ideal sushi would be but it is so good for an AYCE. Most places put crazy amount of rice to fill people up. I was initially bummed that they don't have sashimi for lunch but when I saw the amount of rice in the pieces I was surprised~. Their tempuras are pretty good. Their fish quality is what to be expected from an AYCE place but salmon and white tuna was my fav. Their miso soup ani salad didn't have much flavor but overall experience was very nice. I was craving AYCE and this was the perfect spot to satiate the cravings! At $48 per person, you get a wide range of appetizers, sushi, nigiri, handrolls, and special rolls. What I really appreciated here was the freshness of the fish and the fish to rice ratio. From a money saving perspective, since they use less rice, I am actually able to consume more. From a technical perspective however, it detracts from the typical sushi you would be served at Japanese restaurants in that there is quite a delicate balance between rice and fish, including taste, texture, ratio, etc. For the purpose of an AYCE meal, I enjoyed the smaller rice proportions as I happily enjoyed more. I was excited to see there were so many different appetizer options and the eel fried rice was probably my favorite next to their fried scallops. I would use the rice to eat the other appetizers with. The sushi in general tasted great and quite solid. This place is aesthetic as well and very warm looking. There definitely were a lot of filler ingredients like avocado in the appetizers however and that is quite filling as it's rich in fat. I wish they had not done that but it is not uncommon in AYCE spots but it is just something to keep in mind. My main gripe however is that the tables are very small and so your food won't come out all at once but rather, little by little as you finish your pieces. Personally, I prefer to have at least majority of what I ordered out, so that I can choose what to eat and in what order. However, everything else was quite decent and so it doesn't sour the experience. I enjoyed this spot and would definitely consider returning for when I next crave AYCE sushi. read more

Went all the way to flushing today (8/20), was there around 1pm. The door was wide open, so my friend and I walked in. We saw a bunch of workers moving things around so we waited to be seated. The workers looked at us and continued working so we thought "okay, we'll just wait". After a while, a line started to form behind us so I flagged one of the workers down and I asked "are you open?" and then he said no not until 3pm inspection today, so we left. First in Elmhurst and now in Flushing, Akino has to be one of my most favorite sushi spots in the entire city. The quality of the food is incredible along with the presentation served on their wooden plates. The food is all served in smaller portions so you're able to try more things from their selections. I highly recommend their Shrimp Tempura and the Salmon Sashimi, the sashimi just melts in your mouth. The service is also wonderful, there's always servers paying attention and ready to assist if there's any issues. We had a few of our dishes coming in late but a server noticed we'd been waiting and checked in for us and had it out within a few minutes! Saturday 5PM Dining Experience 1. Service - 5 stars for sure. Our main waitress was very quick to grab our orders. When she wasn't sure what numbers I wrote next to each she would go through each item with us. Not to worry this is very quick as well. Our drinks were constantly refilled and any garbage or empty dishes we had on the table were cleaned out in less than a minute. One impressive point and this goes to the sushi head chef as well is when I mentioned one of the rolls was missing mango sauce and I askef if she can add a little to the top I expected the waitress to just grab a mango sauce bottle and squirt a thin line on the roll which I would be totally OK with. Nope she brought the roll the the head sushi chef. He looked at the roll in disappointment and remade a fresh new one for us. When I asked the waitress how come they didn't just squirt sauce on top she mentioned that the head sushi chef was disappointed in that roll and decided to make a new one for us. I was like wow ok. The sushi making process is open for all to see. No it was not one of those wacky situations you see in YouTube shorts where the chef is pissed and destroys your food without you knowing. 2. Timing of Order Deliveries - Each of our orders arrived at our table about 5 minutes after we submitted the order. We regret ordering so much each time based on people's reviews that it takes 40 min + each order. We were full after two rounds but granted you can see they were two very large rounds. 3. Food Quality - Very fresh fish. For those who complain they're too oily. I can somewhat understand. They're quite fatty so there's really a limit of how much you can eat in a row similar to premium Japanese A5 Wagyu. To offset the fat we started ordering sushi rather than sashimi. Yes you heard me right. SUSHI! Lol first time ordering sushi over sashimi counterparts in an AYCE. The waitress even double checked with us when we put in the order. I have two reasons for this. One the rice (even the not the most amazing fluffy vinegary sushi rice I've ever had) texture really helps offset all the fattiness of the fish. Two the rice portion is extremely extremely small as you can tell from the pics. Each sushi is 90% fish with 10% rice. The rolls were each excellent as well. Especially the Akino and Lobster rolls. They're basically the premium versions of the appetizers Spicy Kani Salad and Lobster Salad lol. For appetizer our favorite was actually the Baby Octopus. Sauce was not too strong and the baby octopus was nice and tender unlike other places where it's like a chew toy. Overall I do wish the price is a little lower but I have to admit it's one of the best AYCE sushi options out there. Elmhurst location may be better... at the very least that one has monthly specials while this one does not yet. They will have later on. Deducted one star for food only because missing monthly specials and the appetizers fried/tempura had a lot more breading than desired. We filled the order sheets 3 times, and 2/3 times there were items missing or random items got added, all items I ordered on the last sheet was perfectly fulfilled, but then again it would concerned me if they can messed up an order with only 5 items.
