Akura Sushi is a solid local takeout spot! I ordered the three-roll maki combo set for $24.95 with a salmon avocado roll, tuna avocado roll, and yellowtail scallion roll, which is my go-to order when getting three rolls. The ratio of fish to avocado to rice was solid. The fish was fresh enough in the sense that it didn't taste fishy, but it also didn't have much flavor, so the rolls all tasted fairly similar. Visually, some of the fish pieces were more cut up and the tuna was a brighter red than I'm used to, which might speak to the quality, though neither had a major effect on the experience. Overall, between this and Blue Mountain, I would personally choose to order from Blue Mountain as I think the quality is a bit higher. read more

This is Akura's sushi deluxe with ponzu and a Diet Coke, $47 all in (delivered with tip) . That's a good price, and it comes with miso soup and a spicy tuna roll. The fish? Fresh, nice-sized nigiri. But here's the problem--every piece was overdressed like it was trying too hard. Uni piled on tuna with caviar? Weird, bitter. Salmon roe on top of salmon nigiri? Redundant. If they dressed a few pieces with intention, no problem, but this felt like forced luxury. And nothing kills sushi faster than fake luxury. Also, I don't love when the roll is a heavy spicy tuna. I'd much rather see a clean salmon, toro, or simple tuna roll as the sidekick. This had the makings of a high score--fresh fish, solid nigiri--but the gimmicks drag it down. this is a basic and solid place for sushi. They have all the standard rolls and you can definitely get both sashimi and Nigiri here. They don't have anything like an Omakase menu of course but they do have great lunch dinner and snack options. I came here during lunchtime and they do serve some sake as well as beer and wine. This has become my go-to sushi spot since I started my new job less than a block away. Honestly, for Manhattan sushi, the price vs quality ratio is pretty good here. I typically hit up the 2 or 3 roll lunch combo and always end up feeling satisfied. High quality sushi for sure. Sometimes I'll eat a bunch of sushi from this place when I'm having stomach issues and the food is so high quality it always ends up soothing my stomach, rather than just filling it. The seaweed was soft and soggy, the salmon, tuna and avocado were of the poorest quality, and frankly, if you look at the photos I have attached, they would look more at home as remnants found in a toilet bowl. To make matters worse, delivery took 1.5 hours when it was quoted 35-45 minutes (they are a 10-15 minute walk from me)! No apologies whatsoever - a refund or credit was staunchly refused by them! Passed by Akura and decided to try a new spot for lunch. They offer a full page of lunch specials and the usual standard 2 rolls or 3 rolls option but the prices are cheaper than what I've seen near Bryant Park. I decided on the salmon teriyaki bento box. It comes with one piece of fish (thin slice), a small salad with ginger dressing, miso soup, 3 pieces of steam shumai, and a California roll. You can ask to substitute a tuna roll in for $2 more. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the salmon was. Everything else was just okay but I honestly don't expect much from these type of Japanese establishments that's run by chinese people. If their other rolls are anything like the California roll that was included in my bento box, I would say skip the rolls and go for the cooked food. Overall, it's a decent place to stop by for lunch. Bento Box for $8.95 with a bowl of miso soup. Ordered the salmon teriyaki. Within a few minutes it was placed in front of me and I dug in. Soup was solid with a good amount of ingredients. The salmon was prepared just right - soft and flaky on a bed of fresh veggies with a perfect amount of sauce on it. The shumai had a nice light crispy coating and soft inside. Salad was crispy iceberg with ginger dressing. The California roll was freshly made and a good amount was piled high. Good rice too. I have to admit I enjoyed this tasty box! Food was served up quick, hot, and pretty delicious. For less than $10 it's a great deal and the perfect amount for a lunch box. They also have a sushi bar lunch special. Two rolls for $8.50 or three rolls for $10.95. Served with miso soup or salad. What a terrific deal! You get to choose among many different types of rolls too. There are other specials such as a sushi lunch for $11.50 and a kitchen lunch for $9.50 with teriyaki's, negamaki's, and katsu plates offered. Akura is on my rotation of regular lunch spots in the city! They have a full page of lunch specials for you and your co-workers to enjoy. My personal favorite is the salmon teriyaki bento box. It's a simple dish with one slice of fish and the box also comes with a small salad with ginger dressing, 3 pieces of shumai, and a California roll. I'm not the biggest fan of California rolls so I usually ask to substitute a tuna roll in for $2 more. Sometimes they do it for me, sometimes they don't. Depends on the server. Doesn't hurt to ask! I came in yesterday with my boss and we often talk about how getting two rolls isn't enough food, but three rolls will put us in a food coma for the afternoon. Coming in as a pair is key as we were able to order one 2 roll combo and one 3 roll (both meals come with miso soup). This way we each get 2 rolls to ourselves and can split the extra roll with 3 pieces each. I can't say they have the best tasting rolls I've ever had, but I'd say they're pretty standard. I was so busy on soy sauce day (I named the day) that I had to eat it plain. SO boring. If you live or work close by, consider Akura an option. I've never sat down to have a meal, but I can confirm that tables do exist, and they would be more than willing to seat you. The host stand is in the back - even before I make eye contact with them upon walking in, they are grabbing menus and scrambling forward like something is on fire. By the time I look up from the act of opening the door, it's like I'm staring at a pitch thrown by Randy Johnson - where did that ball come from, why is it kinda sideways, and where exactly is it going? They get halfway there by the time I say "picking up" and then I see the immediate disappointment in their face. Sorry, friend. It is less than a 5 minute wait for me every time I go, and I've been there at least 6 times since discovering it two months ago. The chefs are professional, fast, and GOOD at their jobs. The presentation is always immaculate. (I'll have to make sure to actually take a photo next time instead of gobbling my food down immediately.) The cashiers are very pleasant and sweet to interact with as well. Food here is very affordable while the restaurant still maintains an air of sophistication, with tranquil music, waitresses and cashiers that give you their full attention, and a high level of quality for the food. It looks like they may have opened recently and the staff was either confused or oblivious. Maybe lunchtime is harsh because they have to balance delivery and the dine-in influx of office peeps, but they can and probably will do better. When I walked in, there was absolutely no one to greet me as waiters (which included two little boys as this is family run like other similar sushi joints) and waitresses scooted back and forth with dishes. You'd think at those prices they might try to short you on shrimp or give you clearly undersized rolls but that's definitely not the case. My bento box was a great portion size and came with the usual salad and miso soup. I was stuffed with that alone. In terms of taste/quality, it's solid: not bad, not great. Just average. After digesting a bit, I dug into my tempura shrimp roll which was equally as average, but for the price I couldn't complain. For the price I expected a smaller portion. Had I know how bug it would be I would have skipped the gyoza or the soup. BUT the gyoza were really good.
