I'm really surprised there aren't more reviews for Akura Sushi! We've ordered their chirashi lunch special multiple times for lunch takeout; for $11.50 you get 8 fat slices of fresh, tasty sashimi, plus tamago + shrimp, plus soup/salad. I posted picture. Their $8.95 bento lunch special is also a great deal. I got mine with salmon teriyaki, and the salmon steak was moist and fresh, not dry or doused with sauce like most places. Sure beats an $8 ham sandwich and a drink, which is the going rate in this neighborhood. BONUS: it won't give you food coma. Right after working out, i was at a crossroads: protein shake or sushi? As I stepped out of the Julian Walker Studio on 31st, the decision was made for me as Akura right right there. With a quick glance at the Yelp, I went in to see their lunch specials. Akura looked to be the average NYC Sushi bar, but one glance at the menu changed that impression...tuna and mango rolls? There were other creative items on the menu that needed me to taste them. Lunch was looking like Dinner for 2 and I was the only attendee... In finding a new Sushi bar, I usually have a staple item known as Chirashi, which is several pairs of sashimi on a bed of seasoned sushi rice. Simple, but if they kill it or don't do it with any colorful nuances....I quietly pay my bill and go my own way. Akura nailed it well for lunch with an artistically done platter and three rolls, which included the tuna-mango roll. Interesting, fresh, and very tasty. Walking around Murray Hill earlier today the boyfriend and I were looking for a spot to enjoy a nice somewhat healthy and small lunch. We happened to walk past Akura Sushi and he thought it might be a good idea to go in. Now there are a couple of reasons why I didn't give this place a stellar review. Upon walking in there was no one to greet us, even though the place was practically empty. We walked towards the back and weren't even greeted then. Once we asked to be seated we were given menus and sat near the back. After looking over the menu, we ordered the 3 roll lunch special for $10.95. for us to share This special comes with a miso soup or salad included. I ordered the miso soup, which was brought out right away. It was extremely tasty. I think this was the best part of the meal. As I waited for the meal to arrive I sipped on some water with lemon. I should've known that things weren't heading in the right direction as soon as I walked to the place. Nonetheless, I know water isn't supposed to have a taste, well this one did and it wasn't good. Finally the rolls arrive and I'm so excited at this point looking forward to some sushi. The rolls were spicy yellowtail, shrimp tempura, and eel avocado. Honestly, I've had better sushi at other places. The fish tasted a bit stale and I don't know if this makes any sense, but it was very fishy. The taste, the smell, and texture just did not do it for me. I won't knock the fact that they do have really affordable lunch specials. I went out with a coworker and for prices similar to Seattle ($90 total) we had more sushi and sashimi than we could possibly eat - and a couple of beers. Today me and pop shared the salmon and lobster(super yummy) roll ($3.50) and the vegetable tempura bento box (15.50)and I had a glass of wine (chardonnay) while I waited ($5) totaling to $24! You ask if they can split the bill? "No!!" Food: mediocre at best. You get what you pay for: cheap sushi. Our order: Summer roll (Spicy tuna crunch, kani, jalapeño, top with mango and spicy mayo), Boston roll (Mayonnaise, vegetable, cucumber, avocado, and shrimp), Christmas roll (Shrimp tempura and avocado rolled with spicy tuna crunch on the top), Dynamite roll (Spicy crab meat, avocado, topped with spicy lobster salad crunch), and miso soup. I often order from Akura Sushi when I work late. After multiple times of eating their sushi, my opinion is that it's just average sushi. It's not extremely fresh, but it's also not the worst. From a delivery perspective, they are fairly quick (under 30 minutes) and I've never had any issues. I usually get the spicy tuna crunch roll and the spicy salmon crunch roll. To be honest, I can never tell them apart. It looks the same and tastes the same. That's probably not a good thing. Every time I've ordered, they've always given me oranges for dessert which is a pleasant surprise. Additionally, the prices are average. I wouldn't say it's too expensive or too cheap. However, going forward, I'll probably spend a couple extra bucks or choose a better sushi place to order from even though it may have a higher delivery time to get better quality sushi. Good sushi for great prices I came here with a friend on a Saturday for lunch because we got a mad craving for sushi. The restaurant was clean and offers the maki roll lunch special on the weekends too - two rolls for $8.50 or three for $10.95. We were super hungry and are sushi eating fiends, so we got six rolls to split between the two of us. At our waitress' recommendation, we tried the sweet potato, shrimp mango avocado, yellowtail scallion, eel avocado, Alaska and Chicken tempura roll. My favorite was surprisingly the chicken tempura roll. I've definitely had better, but for this kind of money, I'm sold. I love sushi in the traditional sense - fresh fish with no frills... but I'm also a sucker for special rolls with all kinds of things on top. So this fell into the middle category: good standard rolls, decent rice to filling ratio and the fish was fresh. The restaurant itself was clean and quiet, obviously a family run affair. Very fresh sushi. The sushi chef always wears his mask during the pandemic, even when I pass by walking. The chef adds extra special touches to the rolls such as a coating of black and white sesame on the outer part of the sushi. I feel very valued as a customer and was also very pleasantly surprised to find a specially sectioned orange when there isnt anyother reataurant that does that in the area. Only traditional old fashion led legit Chinese places do that for you, which really brought back good memories and made me smile. I loved how fresh the salmon roe was. My only complaint is that I dont like the recipe for the sashimi salad, I was not keen on the fresh fish being coated in some type of strange batter, although this fish was also quite fresh.
