Full disclosure, I did not eat at the restaurant. I just hung out in the bar with a few locals. They were all friends that probably hang out there frequently, they treated me like family from the moment I walked in, in fact, I felt like I was with a bunch of my relatives. Haven't been to Al & Al's for a couple of years & decided to take someone new to the area there for dinner at around 5 p.m. on Friday. I ordered a brandy old fashioned at the bar. The bartender who was working the bar side came to take my drink order when she noticed the dining room bartender was busy. I haven't had an OF in years but she made a great one. Our server, Nikki(?) was very attentive without hovering. Very pleasant even when it started to get busy. My friend & I both ordered hand breaded perch for dinner & Nikki told us to help ourselves to the salad bar. Oh my! How many days had they put out the lettuce mix & other salads?? The lettuce was very limp & wilty. The macaroni & pea salad just tasted "off" and the fluff salad had no taste at all. After that, I was grateful I didn't try any other salads items. Thankfully our fish came out and it was delicious! The breading was crunchy & served very hot. Fries & broasted potatoes were good also. My suggestion is to offer a traditional perch dinner with potato, rye bread, and cole slaw like most other area restaurants. If this had been offered I'd have been very happy with Al & Al's, but that salad bar was such an unappetizing turn off that we won't return for a good while. read more

Don't waste your time with this place. We were seated at 6:15. It was 6:30 before the waitress stopped by. I think she came because I asked the hostess if anyone knew we were seated in their station. The waitress never apologized for the wait but asked us if we needed a few minutes! Of course we knew what we wanted after looking at the menu for 15 min and getting our own drinks from the bar. The entree came 45 min later after we asked to see the manager. The manager did not seem to think there was a problem since the food came while she was standing there. So she started walking away. I told her we would not be back and I think she could have cared less. My steak was full of grizzle and my husbands German food was mediocre. Overall a very poor experience. read more

It's been too long since we've stopped at Al and Al's - we took a drive that way today and decided to head back in. On weekends, they're open for brunch (buffet style $12, I question the wisdom of a buffet right now but maybe that's what folks want) til 1, but you can order off the regular breakfast/lunch menu. We opted for the regular menu. I had the German omelette ($10? - brats, Swiss, onions) and the Mister had the double brat, Sheboygan style ($7). Sides are extra so he opted for a side of curds for $4. Have you ever had a brat omelette? If you haven't, you're missing out! It was really, really good and Al isn't shy on size, I swear there were two whole brats in there! It came with about a pound of hash browns as well. I still maintain that Al's is one of the friendliest places out there - I wish I'd seen more masks, but hey, it's Sheboygan. Our bill was around $30 for two giant foods, 2 big beers for the Mister and an iced tea for me. Great value and tasty eats served up by really nice people is always a win for me. read more

I've never had a good meal here and won't go back. I know good German food and this ain't it. It's probably the worst restaurant food in Sheboygan, They're serving rancid products. The rancid tuna casserole left a nasty smell that still is clinging to my hands. The chicken and rice soup was very greasy and inedible. Fire the kitchen staff and start over. The younger accordionist is fantastic, that's the ONLY reason we went. The service was good and food was served quickly. Clean up was good. But, the food is just awful. I noticed people around me ate only half of their food or less. read more

Liked: Live music from an aged accordion player who does a good job with polkas. The food, once it shows up, is good. Especially liked the cod on the Friday fish fry menu. The salad bar is decent. Not so good: we waited 30 minutes before we even saw a waitress. After we ordered, I am pretty sure it took an hour and 20 minutes before the food arrived. In the meantime, we tried some of the beers on tap. I had a Hefeweizen that tasted oddly sour and then a German Pilsner that was watery. We asked the bartender about the bad tasting beers, and he said he personally doesn't drink beer, as he is allergic to it. Say what? Overall: I'm glad we came here, as it was an interesting experience. However I don't think I would come back given the odd tasting beers and the very very slow service. But if you do want to Time travel to perhaps the 1960s, you may enjoy this place. read more

On a late September weekday, at about noon, I walked into Al & Al's, grabbed a seat at the bar, and had one of the top 5 meals of my life. Nothing fancy at all: a double bratwurst sandwich with a side of what I later understood to be homemade sauerkraut, washed down with a mug of Pauline Oktoberfest. But everything was perfect: the brats, the buns, the kraut... even the beer, which was at just the right cool-but-not-icy temperature. The proprietors were chatting at the tables outside when I left, so I thanked them, then asked about the brats. They directed me a block or so away to Brockman's Market. There, they loaded me up with five dozen bratwursts. Frozen, so they'd survive the 12-hour drive home. read more

Seems some employee training is needed. Cash only. Water not available for those dinning in the restaurant, bartender stated you most purchase water. Very strange. Unfortunately we did not enjoy the food here. I had the pork schnitzel and my friend had rouladen. Both dishes were barely warm and didn't taste or look fresh. Seemed like they were leftovers from the day before. The people were friendly, but the atmosphere was like a VFW hall. I feel bad because this is probably a family-owned place, but they need to re-think their strategy. It should be fairly easy to make fresh food to order. Clearly they need better organization skills. Ordered through EatStreet and an hour and a half later EatStreet called and said the staff told the driver the "order already went out". Verging on 4 stars. We stopped for a weekday lunch so can't quite comment on the full offering, music, salad bar etc. Love the authentic/original old-timey decor. My brat and home made chips very good. We also had chilimac and a malt that we loved. Great Manhattan, German dish just okay to us. Very nice staff. I do recommend trying it and would come back but not adding it to our must-stop list. read more

I've been there several times and the food is good to fair. Service is slow and rude. Bartenders are friendly and the drinks are good. We've ordered the fish fry several times sometimes it's delicious and sometimes it blah. Portion sizes seem to vary greatly from week to week. Place needs updating of services. read more

Al & Al's is the real deal...the kind of friendly little neighborhood supper club you would have found back in the 60's but which seem to have pretty much vanished. Since we don't live in Sheboygan we've only eaten here twice, having discovered it on a summer trip thanks to a BOGO coupon from the local visitor center. I'm always looking for authentic Sauerbraten like grandma used to make and (sorry Grandma) I think Al & Al's is even better. They offer lunch on the bar side during the day, and that's a smaller (but still hearty) portion. We returned for dinner two months later (again courtesy of a coupon, this time a postcard for a free birthday dinner since we had signed up for their frequent diner club.) The dinner included soup and salad bar, and all the salads were freshly made and delicious. I can't recommend this place highly enough. It's out of the main harbor/downtown/tourist area, south of the river, so you have to seek it out, but the fact that they've been in business so long despite the location speaks volumes for the quality of the food. read more

Good old fashioned food. This place is old school but wow what a great salad bar! You don't get homemade food like this anywhere! Owner is so friendly and wait staff is great. Ok. So yes, I am in Sheboygan Wisconsin, here for auto racing at Road America. Needed a place for dinner and found Al and Al's on Yelp. And what a Great and authentic place. With some live Polka music playing in the background, I ordered the German Combination Platter. I typically avoid any dish with the word "platter" in the description because the word tends to insult my sensibilities when used in relation to food but trust me, this was the thing to have. Schnitzel, Sauerbraten, Rouladen with spaetzel. Everything on THIS Platter was authentic and delicious. A cold mug of German beer. Chocolate icebox cake for dessert and I was a happy man. If you are in the area you gotta do Al and Al's. This restaurant is 55 years old this year and clearly hasn't changed a thing since opening. Talk about your old school German restaurant. Found this place on Yelp while visiting Sheboygan, and man, am I glad to have checked it out. First thing to hit you when you walk in the door, is that of being transplanted back into the 70's. Wood panel walls, tables with the thick leather backed chairs. Oh, and the dude with the accordion busting out the Polka! I actually laughed when I first walked in, because it was so awesome! Menu is full of traditional German fare. Beer menu is a bit limited, but I did find a great Dopplebock to have during my meal. Food was outstanding. Service was friendly. We were the youngest people in there though, by 25 years, easy. The food was excellent. We were the jerks who came in 30 minutes before close with a group of 10 butc still top notch. Had the old Wisconsin supper club feel that I remember going to as a kid. Kids crushed their food and mine are picky so that's a plus. We ordered all over the menu between everyone and all were happy. This place used to be really good, but on my last few visits I have been disappointed. The food wasn't bad by any means, but it's not as good as it used to be. The last time, my fish was a little bit overdone. I have never come for anything other than the Friday fish fry, so this review is specific to that and not to the Al & Als food in general. Just what you would expect - good food & great atmosphere! The perch and potato pancake were yummy. There was great accordion music to entertain the family, especially my 3 year old. Good German food, attentive friendly staff that went out of their way to accommodate me when I arrived a half hour before the official opening of the kitchen for Octoberfest. My friends and I ate at this place and the food was TERRIBLE!!!! What was supposed to be a 12 oz steak was barely 6 oz sliced razor thin. It came with a baked potato that must have been baked for 10 hours! This for $24!!@#% two other meals of 6 Oz filet steaks were tough. One of these meals was so bad, my friend was very ill afterward. Yet another friend said his meal was so bad, he was ill afterward also! 5 others at our table complained of there meals being the worst they've had. This place was the most pleasant surprise. Wife and I are camping at KohlerAndrea and it was raining. Decided on a fish fry and googled. Al&Al's came up 4th or 5th but was listed as German. Decided to try. Walked in and the place was fantastic. German decor AND live music. I ended up ordering the sampler platter, wife bacon wrapped scallops. Both were excellent. Dinners included soup and salad bars, and my dinner came with red cabbage and potato pancakes. Service was also terrific! Wife and I would travel back up just for dinner, and we live in Kenosha! Good German food and great atmosphere! The regulars were there dancing to live polka music, which was fun to watch. The salad bar was good with at least 10 different salads. My husband had a steak that was cooked perfectly. I had some great German good. The only thing they should add is dumplings as a side. read more
