If your looking for a fancy place to take a date, this is not the place. If your looking for a Delta dive bar experience with good food, Al's is the place. Don't expect white table cloths and fancy dishes. Your walking into a local iconic Delta bar / restaurant, (Not many of these left now days) the floors are sagging and lean to one side, the tables are mismatched and wobbly. You enter into the front through the bar and the dining room is in the back area, you grab a seat where you want to sit (you can also eat at the bar). At the back of the dining area is a white board that will have the specials written in red, and below that will be what they are out of written in black. A server will bring you a menu and get your drinks for you. My wife and I split the 16 Oz Big Old Steak dinner with fries and a side salad, ask for the Al's bread with peanut butter, trust me on this one. Steak and peanut butter are amazing together. The food came out pretty fast considering it was a Saturday evening, but it wasn't that busy and we were early. These old Delta places have very small kitchens and if places are busy it can be a wait for your food, so sit back and enjoy the Delta experience. We ordered our steak medium rare and it came out perfectly cooked with hot fries and salad with a homemade ranch dressing. We split the dinner and had a beer apiece and got out for $60 including tip, that decent for a good steak. If you get the chance, sit at the bar and strike up a conversation with one of the locals, they will tell you amazing stories of life along the Delta back in the day, and it's not all B.S. Buy them a beer and you'll have a friend for the evening. read more

Four of us went for lunch on Valentines Day, what a mistake. I ordered the big steak and my wife ordered smaller version. We both ordered mushrooms. Steaks were poorly cooked and the mushrooms were served burnt, that's right burnt. They should fire the cook and server, who should have questioned food before serving. i should have more to say about al's but in this rare case my words just don't do it justice. best put it this way: indescribably essential. not the experience itself but that having a place like al's in today's world is not only unusual but that knowing its likes still exist simply must be, for a certain balance of the cumulative human spirit to survive if only in the mind. to end it here if you want the quick and easy, the steak dinner on sunday night is probably the key experience, but only if you can tolerate the marauding bikers. otherwise, don't go then. also don't just come for the steak, buy the t-shirt and wear it if you have balls. i recently treated to dinner here a jewish friend from ny's upper east side, bought him the short-sleeve version, simple elegantly black and understated don't you agree? we were of course quite drunk at the time. he swore on his mother's grave, not exactly so but in whatever way it is that jews do to assure something, then and there to wear it once back home and strolling down fifth some afternoon, and very soon. so far he reports not having done so as yet. pigs will fly first. try it yourself, but maybe begin with dinner on a tuesday. read more

It's worth the trip to Locke to visit Al the Wop's. This place is like the joints on the first few seasons of Diners, Drive In's and Dives with the emphasis on the Dives. Nestled in between the former casinos and brothels, this bar seems to be right at home. Parking is impossible on the street, but there is a parking lot behind the museums. This place is a dive bar with a small restaurant in the rear. The facility is basic but clean with a simple menu of traditional American favorites like steaks and burgers. It's a little quieter in the back and you can see all the historic photos. I opted for the BLT sandwich which was made to order. This thing was huge with a massive amount of crisp bacon on their great grilled bread. It was served with a massive portion of great French fries. Al's has a lot of condiments on the table which are not needed but add a special touch to the meal. I could not complete the sandwich and had to take half home! Service was nice with a great menu and atmosphere. It was a little slow and not super fancy, but Al the Wop's is a fun and delicious adventure in the delta for those brave enough to tackle the levy roads. My husband and I came to Locke, CA on Memorial Day weekend for our wedding anniversary. First of all - a quick plug for Locke, it was adorable and very historic. We are from a neighboring area and we were shocked something this cool was in our backyard. We spent about half a day there and would recommend you do the same! Al the Wop's is one of two restaurants in Locke, the other is a Chinese restaurant. As we were there on a holiday, only Al's was open. Again - it seems like every person I talked to knew about Al's and that, basically, I was the only person in the world that has not eaten there. To get to the "restaurant," you will walk through a full biker bar with a complete bar - do not be shocked! There are about a dozen tables in the back, complete with the sloping floor that is unique to Locke. We sat at the formica tables near the entrance. In retrospect, I wish we would have sat at the wooden tables a little farther away. The place was absolutely slammed with people over the holiday weekend, so, we were not immediately greeted. We sat ourselves and the menu was written on a white board on the wall. Other folks got menus, but, it was the same written on the board, so, no harm, no foul. Husband got the burger and, as a vegetarian that was not super hungry, I got a house salad and an order of the garlic fries. The house salad was what I would call a side salad, so, be prepared for that. The thousand dressing that came with was delicious though. And the garlic fries were excellent. I don't know if we would ever make a trip out just to go to Al's, but, I'm glad we can check this one off the list! read more

If you are in this part of California, you have arrived to the Delta! I also refer to it as Delta Livin'! Al's bar has so much history which can be seen by the buildings which surround the entrance. It's a historic bar and restaurant which the friendly and beautiful bartender Rebecca pointed out. I had to try their yellow peppers with peanut butter as a free appetizer while sitting at the bar. Pleasantly surprised! If you are going to order a bite which I do recommend, steer towards the burgers. They are ground daily as the lady chef informed me. If you like an old fashioned dive bar, this is your place. In this case, dive bar is compliment in the highest order. It's not frilly or floofy, it's basic and honest. The drinks, the food and the people are real. This style of establishment is like many of the dying traditions in the world. The food, like the drinks are not complicated, just down right good. If you do need to go over the top, do try the peanut butter cup. Due to its location, I suspect for most it would be a destination, well worth the trip. Al the Wop's had been on my list of places I wanted to try for a long time. Somehow, seeing all the motorcycles and bikers around the restaurant on the weekends discouraged me from stopping in. That finally changed when I was on a Scott Kelby photo walk in this small town. In fact I went in twice on the same day, first for just a quick soda as I was very dehydrated and then with our group of eleven for dinner. The interior is pleasantly divey. The long bar runs the length of the room there are dollar bills tacked to the ceiling and a large common area that people, with drinks in hand, seem to stand around in. The dining room is entered through the bar. The linoleum top tables harken back to another area. Al's has been in this building since 1934, the building was constructed in 1913. Like most of the group I order the special of the Day a steak with fries, garlic bread, and a side salad. I ordered my steak rare and that was exactly how they served it me. The steak was very tender, it did not have a lot of taste until I splashed it with Worcestershire sauce, and then it was great. I ate all my salad and as much of the garlic bread as I could without looking piggy. My then I was able to take half of my steak home. The server did not bat an eye when we asked to be billed separately. The cook was standing in the door when we all getting up, I stopped to compliment him on cooking the steak rare. He was pleased and told me how if I want to be sure I get a rare steak ask for a blue steak. Hum, blue steak, I never heard of such a thing but when I got home I looked it up, a blue steak looks like a perfectly cooked steak. I'm not sure about the bar, but if you are in the dining room this is not the place for fancy cocktails. A rum and coke was perfect for my steak dinner. The prices were reasonable my dinner and drink was only a little over $17.00. The bathroom was very clean I would like to go back for another meal. I first discovered Al the WOP's 15 years ago when my boss took me here for dinner. How he found this place is a mystery to me. Al the WOP's is located in the historical town of Locke. Locke was established in 1915 by Chinese immigrants. It was a thriving Chinese community during its heydays in the 1920's through the 1940's. Al's was a Chinese restaurant constructed By Lee Bing and three partners. But, in the 1930's it was sold to Al Adami, where it became the only non-Chinese business in town. I've been to Al's several times over the years, and felt compelled to come back since I scheduled some work around here. I arrived after 3 pm. The dining room had just closed for the day. The bar was open. I was able to speak to the Richard, the new owner of the place. He apologized for closing the restaurant so early. I didn't mind, since it wasn't hungry. He told me to come back on the weekend when they are open all day long. I told him I couldn't since I was on a business trip. I sat at the bar with a couple of the regulars. Richard treated me to a free coke. Sorry, but, I can't drink and drive. I had a good time listening to the old timers. Al the WOP's official name is Al's Place. They changed it after some complaints. But, the sign out front and Yelp has them with their politically incorrect name. Al's is a dive bar and restaurant. Dollar bills are stuck to the ceiling. You can try your hand at sticking a bill to the ceiling as well! I can't say anything about the food since I don't remember. But the bar is pretty cool and divey. It was a great place to visit if you are in the area. This is the type of place that makes learning about history fun! read more

Excerpt from Lowdown on Locke Chinatown: Finally, my last stop was at Al the Wop's. I originally went in for just a glass of water and ended up staying for an ice-cold Shock Top, a steak and banana peppers. For the first time in my life, I shared (and finished) a jar of Jif with a group of bikers as we each took turns slathering the creamy peanut butter onto our food (both the steaks and banana peppers). We watched as the bartender showed us how to attach dollar bills to the ceiling with just a quarter and a thumb tack. She provided some history of the establishment, telling us that Al Adami ran the only non-Chinese business in Locke Chinatown and served the same delicious steak for decades.
