The Ala-Kai is like a place out of time. The Jersey shore is famous for its "doo-wop" hotel era, and this small motel located about 10 minutes south of the boardwalk in Wildwood Crest brings a whole lot of nostalgia- even for someone who's never been to the Wildwoods before. This Polynesian 3 story motel has all the kitschy 50-60's era theming. We stayed in an "efficiency", which is a type of room advertised all along the shore but we're still not quite sure what that means. It's old, and the room fixtures reflect that. It literally feels like you're staying at your grandma's apartment. But, hopefully your grandma's apartment was as clean and well maintained as the Ala Kai. The maid service always folds the towels into animal shapes - so cute. You can see the beach from the motel and it's about a 10 minute walk to get there. The streets are safe and navigable. There's a very traditional pool in the center, but since they purchased the property across the street, you now have access to two pools. My only complaint is they don't have a proper bike rack to tie up bikes at night. This area is very bike centered and we wound up having to tie up our bikes to the fence around the side. But no biggie. Is it glitzy and glamorous? No. Is it clean, safe, comfortable and a perfect representation of the Crest? Yes. Definitely recommended.

Husband and I found this little gem a few years ago. It was mid September and many places were closed. Perfect for a long weekend. After missing the beach for a couple of yrs due to covid, we were happy to get back in early June. Kids were still in school. So while Cape May and WW were crowded, WW Crest was empty! Lucas handled my booking and it was problem free. We practically had the place to ourselves. A little dated, but impeccably clean, with a large flatscreen. Impressed at the number of channels we had. Pool was sparkling and just a short walk from the beach. When we left each morning, we'd hang out housekeeping tag on the doorknob and always had a clean room with fresh towels AND a cute towel sculpture We look forward to staying here again!

    One Room Efficiency

We booked 4 rooms. 4 families with kids. We had a wonderful stay. Spent sometime at the pool and we used their grill to cookout. The location was so close to the beach. You could actually see the ocean from the motel room windows. The boardwalk we drove too and paid to park at boardwalk. Not far at all. Joann at the desk was absolutely a delight. They have a little gift shop in their office. There was a gentleman worker that stays in a room at the property. He walks the property quite a bit, at times I felt "watched", but considering we were doing nothing wrong, we really had no reason to worry. Just felt a little awkward at times. But he never said anything to anyone in my group. Only mentioning this because if you are planing to come and play music, and really "cut loose", this may not be the place for you. All and all this place was absolutely super clean, we had an adorable lotus flower made from towels and others had a swan. Just that added touch made them stand out some. We will definitely be back. Lovely place.

    Starlux Hotel - 2queen beds

    Starlux Hotel

I'd have to say, I truly have no complaints about this hotel…read more Upon arrival Starlux was easy to find due to its eccentric design and decor. I was happy to find that the starlux has their own parking lot with free and adequate parking. Check in was simple and straightforward. The lady at the front let us know that everything we see out was free to use. Beach towels, boogie boards, sand toys, bikes, kids helmets and complimentary tea and coffee. I only wish we had known this earlier because it would of saved us packing alot of things! We had room 304. To get to the floor there was an elevator and stairs inside as well as an outdoor circular stair case. The room itself was small. It consisted of two queen beds, a bathroom, dresser, mini fridge, microwave and desk. The whole front of the room was a glass window that does not open, overlooking the street, but not the water. The only window in the whole room was in the bathroom. They have an ac unit, but no ceiling fans. The room itself got pretty stuffy due to poor air circulation. I would suggest bringing a small fan. The bathroom was stocked with lots of towels, neutrogena soap and lotions as well as shampoo and conditioner. Everything was suprising clean. The oddest thing was the small wall that jutted out a few inches from the toilet, making it a tight squeeze. The hotel also has a decent sized pool with a hot tub. We did not use them but we had a nice view of them from our balcony. They also have a small game room and laundry facilities. All in all, I would definitely stay here again on my next trip to Wildwood.

We booked a "cottage" which was not a one story stand alone structure as we thought a "cottage" is to be. We were given a room on the second floor requiring going up and down a lot of steps. My husband and I are in our sixties and he has great difficulty with steps. Also we were surprised to have no freezer in the refrigerator, no table nor chair. I had to go to the main hotel 2nd floor to get ice. Also there was no simple coffee maker which normally seems standard especially if breakfast isn't served until 8:00 a.m. I told 2 receptionists that perhaps "cottage" should be removed from their website and replaced with a more accurate description. Outside photos of this building might help too to prevent older people with mobility issues from booking in the "cottage". Both receptionists were kind and understanding. One offered to move us to the first floor of the "cottage " the next day, but my husband didn't want to leave his balcony view by then because the room was so small.

We booked a room at Icona Diamond Beach at literally the 11th hour (3:00 PM on a Friday for that…read moreevening). We decided on a whim to spend the night in Cape May (we were already in Atlantic City), and we managed to score a discounted room through Hotelstonight.com. Our room was bright and seemingly recently renovated. I love the suite effect (bedroom and bathroom away from the sitting area). They have a nice outdoor bar on the beach, but due to the insane wind, it was closed. Tropical Storm Debby was working her whorish way up the coast of New Jersey that weekend. We left the property for dinner, but we regretted it upon our return. The hotel restaurant (Coastal Blue) is beautiful! We enjoyed a night cap at the restaurant bar while we learned a bit about the history of the hotel from the bartenders. Check-out is at 10:00 AM. And they MEAN 10:00 AM. We were getting ourselves ready to go and at 10:00 AM on the dot, housekeeping walked in. We heard them before we saw them, and we said, "We need a minute". It was a little off-putting. We even had the "do not disturb" sign on the door. We did not hear a knock. At any rate, don't expect to linger for even a minute. We were worried they would charge us for the extra 10 minutes (they didn't). I can't help but wonder if it would have been a different scenario if we booked our stay through Icona directly. Hmmm... At any rate, clean hotel with good amenities and shuttle service for local jaunts.

I think they hire are international people, none of them speak English or understand English. They don't want help their customers. They make you feel like you're inconveniencing them. We had a wedding here, not too sure I would recommend. The Bri is the wedding planner for the hotel. Good luck dealing with her. She is not ever nice. All the rooms are the same expect some have two entrances to the bathroom. It's really too bad because this place could be great if they just hire better workers. Phi is in charger food I think. It was greatest to deal with. He was super nice, very friendly, and fixed any problem you have.

Madison Resorts - Lobby area where continental breakfast is served (watch your step).

    Madison Resorts

    (35 reviews)

Overall, I had a great stay at Madison Resort and would definitely plan on coming back…read more One thing the website could do a much better job of explaining is that the resort is split between two buildings with one building in between them. At first, I thought this would be confusing, but it actually worked out well. Both buildings have their own pool, and guests are free to use either one. The pool areas were one of the highlights. The water is heated, although not overly warm, and the lounge chairs are surprisingly comfortable. I also liked that you could easily move the chairs around to sit together with your group. The pools provide towels, which is one less thing to pack every morning, and they usually had good music playing that gave the whole place a fun vacation vibe. I booked a suite with a kitchenette, and that ended up being one of my favorite parts of the trip. It gave us the best of both worlds. We could enjoy a Jersey Shore vacation while still bringing food that we knew our kids would eat. It also saved money and cut down on waiting in long restaurant lines every day. Another little thing that made a big difference was that they had plenty of luggage carts available. It made unloading the car and getting everything up to the room much easier than at a lot of beach hotels. If you decide to eat on-site, Vinyl has excellent breakfast sandwiches. I didn't try enough of the menu to recommend much else, but the breakfast I had was really good. The shuttle van was another standout feature. It completely changed the experience for us because we could explore Wildwood and even head into Cape May without constantly worrying about parking, time limits, or paying parking fees. The housekeeping staff was also great. They were friendly and easy to talk to, and we were able to coordinate simple service during our stay, mainly fresh towels and trash removal, without needing a full room cleaning every day. There were a few areas that could use improvement. The Wi-Fi wasn't just slow, it barely worked during our stay. The water pressure in the shower was very weak, and I couldn't wait to get home to my own shower. The paper products also felt pretty inexpensive for a resort at this price point. The parking spaces are also extremely tight, to the point where some guests were taking up two spots just to avoid getting their doors dinged. One thing worth mentioning for families is that the resort isn't specifically designed around kids. If you're looking for organized activities, this isn't that kind of place. We've stayed at ICONA before, where they have staff running kids' activities throughout the day. Madison doesn't offer anything like that. On the other hand, my kids mostly just wanted a nice pool, and this delivered. Plus, it's located right next to a large park with a huge playground and splash pad, so there was still plenty for them to do. The marketing makes the resort seem geared mostly toward girls' weekends and adult getaways, but don't let that fool you. We stayed with kids and found it to be very family-friendly. My overall takeaway is this: if you're looking for a traditional, quieter family beach vacation, I'd probably lean toward Ocean City. If you're okay with a livelier atmosphere and want to be in the middle of Wildwood's energy, Madison Resort is a great choice. It's not the most luxurious resort on the Jersey Shore, but enough has been renovated and updated that it feels like one of the nicer places in the area. If you're looking for peace and quiet, this probably isn't it. But if you want a fun beach vacation with good pools, convenient amenities, and a great location, it's an easy place to recommend.

Disappointing stay despite high-end price The silky-sand…read morebeach, free lounge chairs and umbrellas, and beachside food service were the best parts of our stay. Our two-room suite was quiet, and the restaurant staff were pleasant. Unfortunately, the bathroom looked grungy with a rusted toilet paper holder and poor cleaning, and the bed was uncomfortable. Both the bedroom and bathroom were tiny, and I kept hitting my leg on the bed frame when walking around. We were handed one vague sheet of information at check-in, and when my husband went back for clarification, the front desk still couldn't clearly explain the amenities. Most of the staff were unable to answer basic questions. The towel attendant stayed on her phone, and the manager seemed "put off" when asked anything. For a hotel on the high end of pricing in the area, I expected comfort and at least a touch of "luxury." Required valet parking added to the inconvenience. I would not stay here again.
