We arrived approximately 5:30 pm for dinner. We have been to Alamo cafe many times over the years. This time when we arrived the rug was filthy in the entryway as was the floor. We were Nicely greeted and promptly seated. I ordered the #4 which was an enchilada, taco and rice and beans. I had forgotten they use a red sauce on their enchiladas that I don't care for. I decided to try my taco The beans were very thick. My food wasn't hot, just warm. The taco shell was hard and crumbled with every bite. But tasted ok. I only ate half of it. Loved the tortillas. The fact they have butter on the table for the tortillas was a delight. But as I'm sitting there I notice a gnat flying and it landed on my food. Then it flew over to the side of the plate. My husband got it with a napkin. The waitress was nearby so he laid the napkin on the table. We showed it to her. I told her it landed on my food. At this point I wasn't going to eat anymore of it. She looked at the napkin folded it and took it. As she was leaving she asked if I wanted a to go box. I said no, a bug landed on my food and crawled around. I don't want to eat this. She said ok, I'll bring you your check. My husband didn't finish his food either. We both lost our appetites. We paid the bill and left. We had been through this before with a different restaurant that we use to love but have never been back there since. We won't be returning here either. Grabbed an early dinner here while we were staying at a hotel across the street. Staff was very friendly and greeted us as soon as we walked in. Our server was excellent and helped us with some recommendations. Excellent chips, salsa, and brisket queso. Both of our entrees were also very good. My friends like to dine here so I decided to order something simple after a bad experience with tasteless chicken enchiladas last year. I ordered a ground beef puffy taco and a bean and cheese chalupa. The puffy taco was small and filled with a tablespoon of ground beef. I used the salsa served with the chips to boost the flavor. The Alamo Cafe was near my hotel and served as a great dinner spot. I didn't sit down, but the inside looked nice when I picked up my food. I think they could have given a little more meat and salsa, but aside from that, the portions were large! They gave me a huge bag of chips and 6 or 7 tortillas. The sopapillas were delicious and came with a bunch of cinnamon sugar and honey. The shrimp and steak were cooked perfectly and all the food was seasoned well. First time trying alamo cafe and expectations were high. Unfortunately, the expectation wasn't met. There were no issues with the service but there needs to beore cleaning of the floors. At the start, a strong smell of dirty water overcame us. We decided to stay since we were already here. We came early to beat the lunch rush at around 11. We were brought a fresh order of flour tortillas to eat while we waited for our food. Tortillas were fine. I got the dinner #6 which has a cheese enchilada, chile con queso tostada, rice and beans. I'm new to town and trying new restaurants. When doing a search for queso, this restaurant popped up. I am so glad it did! Do not let some of the lower reviews influence your decision, just come try this place! They were making the tortillas right when you walk in. The queso (with chips and tortilla) I had was so delicious and I want to try the others. I had a really hard time deciding what to get. I ended up getting chicken and mashed potatoes. We met a young man named Molasses and he was assigned to wait on us. Well we think that was his name as he didn't have a name tag or introduce himself. What a beautiful place to eat, but bring ear plugs...my apple watch went off warning me of dangerous noise levels. I thought my Food was good, my GF didn't like her Shrimp Fajitas at all. In fact all she got served was a plate of shrimp with some onions. We waited for 5 min and then chased down Molasses to get tortillas, rice, and beans. Very surprised by the small size of the chicken avacado salad, especially since the cobb was at least twice the size. My $3.59 unsweetened tea was never refreshed and I finally got a refill when waiter returned with our tickets. Group of 14 and no one got the right ticket. Nice ambiance. I hadn't been to Alamo Cafe in quite some time, and our family decided to visit the other night. Immediately, I noticed that the interior of the I-10 location felt much plainer than usual and was void of personality. The food was okay, yet nothing to rave about. The tortilla soup was the plainest I've had in a while. While there were little bits of chicken, it was mostly just broth. I've never liked the rice, even as far as 15 years ago, and I'm glad there were side options that I could select. I ordered the Chili Rellano with beans and broccoli. While the rellano and broccoli were okay, I felt "off" the next day. My husband had Dinner #1 and also felt off the next day. My child, who usually eats an entire crispy taco left half of it and ate portions of the rice and beans. They also complained that their tummy hurt the next day. The highlight of the dinner? The tortillas - which are always delicious. We planned to take our remaining three tortillas home and placed them in a to-go bag. Less than 2 minutes later, we arrived at our vehicle, realized we forgot the tortillas on the table, went back to get them, and the staff had just finished bussing the table. Came for a group event. Great service. We had a rather large group and and our waiter was attentive and took care of all our needs. It sucks I can't remember his name but that waiter was awesome. I got the shrimp & spinach quesadillas and it was a big miss. I mean check out the photo- that barely even looked the part. They had those mini shrimps, the ones that are smaller than a dime. No flavor whatsoever. There was wayyyyy too much spinach in there, the ratio was all off. I took it home and the kids took a bite was like, nah I'll pass. I like to get an extra order of flour tortillas to go and queso for everything. We ordered steak fajitas for 4 people and still had leftovers. The steak was tender and well-seasoned on a bed of grilled onions and bell peppers. The chips and tortillas were fresh and perfection. Added some pepper with some of the house salsa picante, boom Wifey was warmed right up by her Tortilla Soup & Puffy picadillo taco. The soup had a deep and unique flavor we both enjoyed. Fresh is the word that just kept coming to mind throughout the meal. Her whole plate was under $10. The meal actually started with some stale chips, which happens. But it was cool, because their free in-house tortillas were awesome. We also loved their famous Street Taco quesadilla made w/ jalapeno jack cheese, chipotle sauce, and beef fajita meat with tasty bits of fresh cilantro and avocado Again, we chose the large portion to share but loved that they offered a smaller option. We have been to Alamo Cafe for 10+ YEARS! Recently dined in for lunch and the experience/food there was average. The carne quisada that we LOVE from there does not taste the same anymore. The homemade tortillas still ROCK! But our favorite dish left more to be desired. We ordered a small queso for the table and even that was not earth shattering. Sigh! We're we're seated promptly and received, chips salsa, drinks, tortillas with butter before you could blink. The kids loved their quesadilla and fries. I've never really enjoyed Alamo Cafe, especially not their enchiladas. I've seen several posts on Facebook about how they have the best enchiladas in town. The complimentary chips were stale and the salsa, although it tasted fresh, tasted like the lid for the salt shaker fell off while they were making it. Anything the salsa went on had no need to add salt. The tortillas were fresh and really good. Tea drinkers - the tea was fresh and delicious. I also ordered a strawberry jalapeño margarita on the rocks, it wasn't bad. Now the enchiladas... oh boy, what a train wreck. I ordered the Dinner #3 with 2 enchiladas, queso tostada, rice and beans. So much nope! The enchiladas were like tough tortillas wrapped around unmelted cheese with some hormel chili on top, with a little bit more cheese sprinkled on top of that. I hadn't eaten all day, so I drowned them in the salty salsa and choked them down. The queso tostada was a joke half a chip dipped in what tasted like velveta. The beans looked good, and they had a great texture/consistency to them. Sadly they were bland and tasteless af. The rice was inedible. Taco Bell makes much better rice... hell, so does my mom and she can't cook! I don't often go to Alamo Cafe, and when I do it's because people from out of town want to go there.
