If you want to go with a staple for tacos, you cannot forget to consider El Charro on Harry Wurzbach. If you are headed onto Fort Sam from 410 or 35, you will no doubt see it on the corner. I usually hit them up for breakfast tacos early in the morning. This visit we sat down in their dining area. The lunch time crowd was just coming in, but we had our choice of seats. We were greeted by our servers, ordered the regular (huge) limonadas, and were given a basket of chips and salsa to keep us while we waited for our order. I ordered the carnitas plate with corn tortillas and charro beans. I got enough food to make almost 5 tacos from the plate. It came with rice, beans, and salad. Scrumptious! The staff checked on us, and everybody, pretty regularly to make sure everything was great. Plenty of parking in addition to their drive thru. The last time I went there which was 2 weeks ago they had two big dead cock roaches in the light and they are probably still there. They were dead but it is a restaurant and very unappetizing. There are a couple of dishes this place does right. Chilaquiles (verde), and the burrito. I don't venture far from those two cuz I know what I like and I'm sticking to it. I'm here to talk about the dang burrito I just ate. Bruh, try this: carne asada, beans, rice, cheese, crema, and grilled jalapeños (not pickled!). Splash on some of the rojo sauce and you'll be driving all the way down from Cibolo like I do for this burrito. There have been times I've tried to recreate this burrito at spots closer to me or locations close to Charro's when it was closed...and nothing compares! They even toast the burrito as a loving touch on the way out the kitchen. As usual, El Charro does not disappoint! We've been coming here since the 90's. The food is always great. I got thpastor mini street tacos and my husband got the carnitas torta. My 5 mini street tacos were filled with a generous amount of yummy seasoned pork with chopped onion/cilantro and sliced lime on the side. My husband's torta was filled with a generous portion of carnitas, lettuce and tomato on a soft torta bun. And the fresh salsa brought out was flavorful, spicy full of goodness. All right, JT!!! I am soooo sorry I forgot to complete my doggone review! Lol! Like I said before: good place for breakfast tacos. And I loved the cheese they use as well. I'm not exactly sure but I believe it's asadero or something similar (what you'd usually get in a queso flameado). Always fresh from here. Unless I've ordered ahead, it never tastes like it's been made a bijillion hours in advance. The ladies primarily speak Spanish but even friends and co-workers of mine who don't speak it (Spanish) have never had any issues re: language barriers. They're open 7 days so if I'm craving them on the weekend, I don't have to worry about waiting until the work week. They do offer more since they're open for lunch and dinner as well but I've never dined in here during this time. Bistek, fajita quesadilla, carnitas and gorditas - they have it all and more. This is a place where it can get packed easily but people are almost always on a constant in and out from here so finding an available seat has never been a real issue. P.S. Happy now, JT? Yeesh!!!!! I used DoorDash to order breakfast tacos from here. They charged me almost the same price as each taco to add a pinch of shredded cheese to them. But this one is awesome if you like spicy order the spicy carne asada plate its inexpensive and the plate is loaded. The food is so fresh and the staff is awesome. Gah I love San Antonio. Where else can you get $1.75 AMAZING chorizo and egg breakfast tacos with homemade delicious tortillas. This place is definitely unassuming but the food is delicious, service is fast and they have a new drive thru. Hours are modified for Covid so take that into consideration. My son had the shrimp quesadilla and those were the most flavorful shrimp I've ever tasted in a quesadilla! Usually they're just drowned in cheese (not a bad thing!) but this was layers of tasty flavors! I had Asada street tacos and they were delicious! The wait staff is incompetent. We ordered 1 sweet and 2 unsweet teas, & 3 of their breakfast burritos with Coffee for $2.99 specials. The tea was wrong, Coffee never came, and then the waitress had the balls to argue Withe and tell me I was wrong with my tea order. The so called manager was on her phone the whole time, and she argued with me as well. Then, after checking my burrito when I had a minute to Koln at it, the eggs were not cooked, there was no bacon, just bean and eggs and some disgusting reddish velveeta style cheese. (June 10, 2011) Really good Mexican food can be hit or miss. I've had good, and I've had bad. There has also been VERY bad. But in my search for the best of the best, every so often I come across a real gem. El Charro is just that... a real gem. Located just outside the Harry Wurzbach Gate of Fort Sam Houston, this unassuming place doesn't dazzle. But it sure impresses the palate. Negotiating the full parking lot is a challenge (keep in mind an overflowing parking lot is always a good sign). Luckily it's on the corner of busy Harry Wurzbach and Morningside Lane, so patrons can park down the street, or next door in the parking lot of a certain Chinese restaurant which will remain nameless... which, by the way, doesn't have a full parking lot (if that tells you anything too). Once inside, it appears that the owners crammed way more tables and chairs than the local fire marshal legally allows (another very good sign). Patrons range from uniformed Soldiers and Airmen to working-class stiffs, laborers, local law enforcement, and the occasional suit-and-tie lunch bunch. The ample menu contains the typical Mexican fare of bistek, fajitas, quesadillas, carnitas and gorditas, the requisite tacos, taco salads, enchiladas, and burritos, and a few other surprises including nopales y huevos, posole (only on weekends) and horchata (rice-cinnamon milk on ice). I settled on the carnitas--a plate full of seasoned shredded pork reminiscent of Hawaiian Kalua pork. The plate comes with shredded lettuce, tomato, two slices of avocado, and your choice of flour or corn tortillas ($7.95). I also opted, at the urging of my lunching partner Carlos Smith, to have the horchata. I have never before enjoyed this Mexican beverage made with rice milk, cinnamon, and ice. Incredible only begins to describe the sweet, refreshing elixir that is destined to become my new favorite. Knowing full well that it doesn't exist in Oregon, I'll be spending a fair amount of time doing research into how to make it myself at home. Be forewarned: Lunch at El Charro is not for the light eater. Against my better judgment I ate the entire meal, and waddled back to the post feeling overstuffed, but definitely satisfied. Where El Charro doesn't put a dent is in your wallet. All meals are priced around $6.95 to $8.95. I have to give my lunch, and the accompanying horchata a very satisfying 9.0. I'm sure we'll be returning to this little hole in the wall numerous times. read more
