We had a great experience both times. The amenities are really excellent. Bathrooms were clean and showers were great. They just recently opened the pool year-round and the kids had a fun time splashing around. The kids also enjoyed the small playground after a day in the truck. The owner and staff are extremely nice and take great pride in the place. They texted us in the afternoon of our first stay to coordinate our arrival. When we got there, they explained that since we have a truck camper they put us in a spot close to the facilities and away from the road. They knew we would appreciate the quiet and the shorter walk to the bathrooms. Very thoughtful! The afternoon of our trip back through, they texted us to let us know that we had the same site with the same access code for that evening. It was seamless. The location is also great. It is close to I-40 with easy on and off. It feels safe behind locked gates and thick walls. Noise at night was minimal, considering the urban location. Just across the main road, there are many options to eat, which was great when we didn't feel like cooking. Multiple gas stations are also close. There is a truck stop nearby and one of the nights there were many big rigs parked on the road, but they made no difference to the experience of staying on the property. We only saw a few other people during our stays. They were friendly and everyone just kept to themselves. It was tough to judge how many residents are long-term versus short-term, but I did notice some turnover between our Saturday and Wednesday stays. Overall, I strongly recommend Birdie if you need a place to stay in Albuquerque! We will definitely return if we find ourselves in the area again.

I was also pretty connected to this thing we call the Internet. It was the rabbit I pulled out of my hat, that trick up my sleeve that unveiled local joy. Truth told, I'd lived in the Duke City the better part of 15 years and I honestly didn't think the place had much to offer either of us. And I didn't find much on Yelp, either. What followed, during that year with my daughter, were endless reviews of places I found as I toted her around the city on my bike, with the occasional drive to the Balloon Museum, indoor soccer field or hiking trail. I reviewed all of 'em with abandon. I felt like I had an obligation, as a parent, to share what we experienced. (You can find many of these reviews on my Lists, specifically "Kids Rule the 505" and "Kiddo Files: Parks".) It's a tough gig, the ol' full-time parent thing, we're always looking for something to do that doesn't involve a television screen. Yelp was, and continues to be, my best resource for parents. I know I'm late in the game discovering Hyder Park, but it's my favorite new locale on Tuesday nights. The irony is thick. In this supposedly inter-connected digital landscape, this little slice of green grass and towering trees (ooh! tall shady things!) crafts something we call Community. Food trucks, music and people. It's that simple, and the place is a blast. Beginning at about 4pm, the white folk descend in droves. (They're really open-minded and indiscriminate, promise.) The good times roll until around 8pm. Kids run wild, parents connect and take a load off, and if only for a few hours, this city looks a little like Portland. And it's free! (Including the yoga, 5-6pm. Don't think I'll be partaking in that there stretchy stuff, though.) Don't let the white people thing scare you off. Grab your calendar, virtual or paper, and pencil in Hyder Park as your Tuesday night place-to-be. It's glorious.

Stayed at Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa for three days for a conference. The resort is in Santa…read moreAna Pueblo, which is about 25 minutes outside Albuquerque and another 50 minutes from Santa Fe (though with the conference schedule, I was unable to make it to Santa Fe). The property itself is beautiful and expansive, sits on Tamayame land, and at the outset of the conference a member of the Native American tribe welcomed us and shared about the land and setting. The property has with multiple event spaces, an on-site trail, a large gym, and several pools. It is a fairly large resort (our room was at one end, so it was about a 7-10 minute walk to the main lobby area). Each day began with a large breakfast buffet, and lunch was similarly well done. One of the highlights was being able to sit outside during meals at large tables overlooking the grounds, mountains, trees, and fresh air made for a really peaceful setting. For breakfast, I enjoyed the red/green chilies chilaquiles (New Mexican style breakfast), it was very flavorful and I enjoyed trying but was very spicy/heavy. From a conference and events perspective, the resort is very impressive. There is a large main conference room with a stage, and the room can accommodate over 100 people (at round tables), along with many smaller breakout rooms. Over two evenings, we attended events at different venues on the property, one about a 10-minute walk away (with hotel mini-bus transportation available), and another closer to the main area under a tent. The more distant venue was quite large and set apart, likely used for weddings and larger celebrations. That evening included a buffet dinner, DJ, dancing, and multiple bar setups. The second evening closer to the main hotel was a seated dinner under a tent, with music and performances in a more contained setting. There is also a nice bar and restaurant in the lobby, as well as another more casual restaurant by the pool. Given time constraints, I was not able to fully take advantage of all the amenities (including the spa, horseback riding, and longer trail walks), but I would absolutely recommend this property. It is incredibly scenic, serene, and feels immersed in nature, and I would gladly return.

Rinconada Canyon: Small parking lot, but free. We got there pretty early on a weekday so there was no issue, not sure what it would be like on a weekend. Be prepared for a sandy hike, and keep an eye out for snakes! We were a little worried when the first two signs indicated petroglyphs that we could barely see, if at all, but as you get deeper into the canyon they become much more numerous and clearer to see. Round trip hike is flat and easy, aside from the sandiness, but there is zero shade so be prepared.

I don't know the history behind this particular slice of preserved river valley, but it certainly serves its purpose, A) providing wild critters a safe spot to cohabitate and B) the rest of have a good glimpse at what that looks like, with trails weaving the interior and perimeter of the plot, there's plenty of room to wander, here, and if you look close, plenty to see. Just adjacent to the parking lot is a nice visitor center, with a few activities for the kiddos and knowledgeable ranger-types ready to give you the lay of the land. Open Space hosts the occasional summer festival/educational class, so make sure to check out the schedule. Like the Petroglyph national monument and the bosque bike trail running to Alameda, this little slice of calm offers a great getaway from the bustle of Albuquerque's west side, which is consistently expanding and growing, and rarely paying attention to the speed limit on Coors. Just sayin'. Duck in here, it's easy to find, just look for the skeletal, colorful public art sculpture.
