This is the second time we've had Alchemy do plumbing work in our home. Several months ago, they installed a new toilet for us and replaced a leaking faucet in our guest bathroom. Both tasks were completed thoughtfully and quickly. I am a person who questions everything and does a fair amount of research before making a purchase or a home improvement. Chase was excellent at answering all my questions and providing helpful feedback on the choice of water heaters and installation needs. That was truly appreciated. After assessing the project and the requirements of the water heater we wanted, he provided a cost estimate that was reasonable, given the amount of work required for a proper installation. I purchased the water heater we wanted and Chase and Christian picked it up and delivered it to our home for installation. That, too, was very appreciated. We had them install the new water heater in our garage. The one we chose was a natural gas, powered-ventilated model to replace the former, similar type of water heater that had failed after 13 years. Unfortunately, the exhaust vent connection to our galvanized chimney was not permissible with this newer model. Therefore, this necessitated fairly extensive tubing to an allowable exhaust point. This took more time than the installation of the water heater itself. Chase and Christian worked past regular business hours to ensure the installation was satisfactorily completed and that we would once again have hot water. I called Alchemy when my basement started filling up with water from a clogged main drain. They came out the same day, which was such a lifesaver. They snaked the line first, and when that didn't quite do it, they came back the next day and hydro-jetted it until everything was flowing perfectly again. They also ran a camera to check the pipe (it's the original one and super corroded) and explained what I can do to help prevent future clogs. The plumbers couldn't find the crawlspace (weird since they were in contact with property mgmt) so they removed the toilet, capped the septic pipe, and left; left the job and had no schedule to return. They got a significant job (exploratory dig, then complete main service line replacement + pressure regulator) done within two days start to finish, even though that depended on secondary groups (the utility locator service, plus a tunnel boring service). All nice folks. Did not track dirt in the house. Checked all the faucets. The work looks clean, and best of all, now we have running water again. Alchemy came to give a bid on a job. They charge $85 for this. At the time I gave them half down on the project, $1500. This was a mistake. I ended up going with another company and called to get a refund. They wanted to charge me $185 because the techs spent more time on site. After I protested they agreed to refund the deposit minus the original $85 they said they would charge. The lesson is, don't put down money until you have all the other bids. AVOID - needed a toilet flange replaced (I have the toilet, wax ring, etc... just needed a replacement flange, should have been at most a 2-3 hour job). They wouldn't give a quote over the phone, had to send someone to look at the job. Today the tech quoted around $1,450. I thought I was hiring a small, reputable company, and expected the quote to be a bit over Google value to replace a flange ($145-$165) given labor - but definitely not $1,450 for a simple replacement of a plastic flange. Reviews said reasonable pricing, so I went ahead and booked an appointment for the nominal $85 fee. My repairs required replacing a shower valve cartridge, and installing a kitchen faucet. I had bought my own faucet. They were just going to install it. Quote given was for 1 1/2 hours PER task. $651.91 to install the faucet. $638.15 to replace the cartridge. Seriously.
