The plant wall is gorgeous but when it hangs onto your table and you have little bugs flying all around you all meal it loses its appeal. We were seated right behind the hostess and got to hear her tell many people of a large company outing they were in the loft which is down the block and turn left in the pouring rain. I can't believe you can't get to it from the building. All these people in work clothes and soaking wet. As far as food We shared six plates between my husband and I - they were hit or miss. Loved the redskin potatoes , ginger chicken bites and meatballs. The cheese tray was not my favorite. The cauliflower we liked but the yogurt sauce wasn't the best. The brat was good but barely warm. The pimento cheese grits were very dry and not very flavorful. When sharing food I never understand why they don't provide serving silverware or give you new plates between dishes. The drinks were the most disappointing. His Malbec was much more dry then Malbecs usually are. My sangria had too much ice, no fruit and little flavor. His second drink was a blackberry cocktail and was not impressive. We might stop by again but a very average place on a street with some real powerhouse restaurants. read more

I had dinner there tonight with a couple friends. The restaurant is quite attractive, and the service was generally very good (although my waitress tried to remove my plate without asking me and before I was done). I ordered the short rib with wild mushroom risotto. The short rib was good, but the risotto was, I thought, bland. I did not detect any mushroom taste in it. I'd like to give this place five stars. It has an interesting menu, nice atmosphere, is quite attractive, and everyone is friendly. But my dish fell short. read more

I have always been such a big fan of Madtree and anything they do, so it is no surprise that this restaurant quickly won me over! I went to Alcove for brunch on a Sunday morning. The interior is just so well done. It feels trendy and natural and beautiful and is just refreshing. We sat inside near the front of the restaurant and I ordered a Bloody Mary followed by a Shade beer - both were amazing. I ordered the Eckerlin's Goetta Sandwich for food and I am pretty sure it was the best damn breakfast sandwich I have ever had. My only feedback was our server wasn't great. Drinks were slow and he was awkward, but sometimes that happens. The food and drinks were awesome and that won me over! read more

Beautiful restaurant, great vibe. Food was hit and miss. Roasted carrots with quark were warmly spiced and delicious. The tofu was crispy without being greasy, but the vegetables that came with it were bitter and not what we considered roasted. The braised short rib was fork tender, but a really heavy dish for spring. Our server was excellent and clearly saw the TT about wearing hair in braids. This restaurant is for my earthy women who want to be at one within themselves inside, and out. The space is beautiful when you walk in, it's cozy, classy and a splash of rootsy tootsie! The back wall behind the bar is covered in greenery of all types and colors, it's such a vibe. The design and color scheme is neutrals and simple. The tall sleek glasses, nice white small plates, and noticeably nice heavy forks. I appreciate small details like those, as it truly adds value to my dinner experience. The menu is simple, one page and comes on a clipboard for the artsy vibe. We selected two cocktails and a couple menu items. Our great waiter cookie, educated us on how the mixed drinks are made into barrels and served on tap. This is something I haven't seen before, we were and intrigued and we wanted to give them a taste! I had a blackberry mint bourbon cocktail and he had a scratch mule. Both drinks were very good and tasted surprisingly fresh! We started with the pickle board. With me being on this pickle trend, he knew it would be my go to item as soon as I saw it on the menu. The fun part was, it didn't include what was coming on the board so we were very intrigued and ready for the surprise. It was plated very neat and well and had such a variety of items. Pickled celery, watermelon radish, carrots, mini asparagus, radish, mustard seed, cucumber, red onion. Each were fun to try and we enjoyed the variety of items on the board. The waiter cookie, mentioned the items shuffle and change items often, so that's good to know for next time. We tried the ginger chicken bites, they were outstanding! We were both honestly surprised by how good it was. You smear the chicken in the plated sauce, dip into the dipping sauce and make sure you have chicken, celery and cilantro on each bite and it's golden every time. Lastly we tried one more small item, the meatballs. The ingredients caught my attention and they were great but if we're being honest here they don't compete with Goodfellas. They are a different type of meatball though. Lots of different sours and sweets and many flavors in each bite. When it first arrives, just note it does have a different type of scent and smells much differently then you'd except. With no more room for dessert, we wrapped up and stepped over the homeless man that was hanging out on the steps. It was a great meal, experience and date night and I enjoyed every minute. I got the vibe that it's great for some quick finger food (not idea for a meal that's going to have big portions and fill you up) but it's fun bite size items and fresh pretty drinks. We went for brunch last week (03/17) ~ 11am. It was fine. Server was great, super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu despite them having only been open for a few days and never having done brunch. However, we made a reservation as soon as they became available (probably one of the first reservations made for brunch). Despite this, we got stuck out in the greenhouse. The greenhouse is very cool and I imagine it's awesome when there's more people. But we were the ONLY people besides staff there despite inside being pretty full, so it felt a little weird. We were told that the greenhouse is first come first serve, and all reservations were inside, but we had a reservation well in advance. So it was a bit weird and the reasoning didn't make sense. The food was also pretty mediocre. We had the french toast, a chicken biscuit, the goetta sandwich and pimento spread. French toast was pretty good. Chicken sandwich less so, needed more maple syrup or at least something else on it to counteract the super crunchy biscuit and chicken. Pimento spread was super good, though. I probably would have given 3 stars except for the fact that this was their first brunch shift and obviously it takes time to adjust and figure out the kinks. Just left a bad taste in our mouth since we had been super amped to try it out and see the atmosphere and had been keeping our eye on it for months. I will say that we made our comments to the manager/server and they were super helpful and friendly. read more

Great service!!! Kind of a strange menu. Starters were very good we had muscles and clams an meatballs. I had the burger about the only thing that appealed to me, and fries. The fries were great the burger was dry and had pickles, lettuce and if there was special sauce I couldn't taste it. My wife had the Goetta sandwich which was a 1/4 inch thick piece of goetta and a massive bun. The bun was good the goetta was good but a lot of bread. We had a great Bloody Marys. I should also mention that we thought it was a little pricey. I know there is a lot of overhead to cover but our bill was $184.00 with tip and this was just a Saturday after brunch. UPDATE - We made a return trip to Alcove yesterday to give them another go and this time we had a great experience. Our server, Lizzie, was super professional. She was very accommodating, checked on us regularly (but not too often) and was delightful. We ordered several Madtree beers, the cheese board, crudité board and the chicken sliders - all to share amongst the two of us. Everything was delicious. The chicken sliders tasted wonderful and were piled high with chicken -- and excellent deal! All-in-all we had a terrific experience this time and will definitely head back to Alcove when we visit Cincinnati again soon. read more

I was in love with the decor of this spot the second we walked in the door. High ceilings, gorgeous greenery everywhere and what looked like original floors. This is a special place but we went on a night that something went wrong in the kitchen. Three hours later, after finally getting a table big enough for our group and being served food that had clearly been sitting under a heat lamp for quite a while (bun was hard as a rock and smash burger itself was basically a charred hockey puck) we were ready to leave.
