Both the bakery and the lounge (in the pizza shop)were awesome. We had breakfast, upon arrival to the island (before getting mopeds at Aldo's mopeds) and stopped by for a drink on the way out. The waitress that we had was very friendly and the bartender was excellent, too. The initial breakfast menu was limited but we both found something we wanted. They do also have additional items such as fruit cups and bagels, not mentioned on the menu. I would not hesitate to go back. It was good food and drink and good service, too! Most Awful breakfast ever! I would call that a lack of respect for my meal instead of breakfast! Food took too long to be served approx. 30 minutes, considering that the place was really quiet. The staff is great, the outdoor sitting is good too but the menu is very limited. No good choices available, the scrambled eggs were a disaster, one oily cold scrambled egg paired with burnt home fries and sausage. And of course a micro leaf of kale to celebrate! The Italian-American beachhead on the otherwise working-class WASPy Block Island community, Aldo's Restaurant anchors the Weldon's Way complex that includes a bakery, ice creamery, and a bike/moped rental outfit one block behind New Shoreham's main drag. Heavily concentrated fun. Drinks are STIFF, with ginger beer simply flavoring the deluge of rum in Aldo's Dark-and-Stormys (yes, this is New England). Nothing fancy here, but an exceptionally well-stocked bar. Fortunately, the clientele, though touristy and working class-y during the summer, avoids the tacky excess that defines its harborside neighbor Ballard's (where one needs to stay just sober enough to protect a drink and stagger back to the ferry). Food is served hot and promptly, with SURPRISE, a nice collection of moderately priced Italian red wines. "Aldo's Special" is a curiosity - with meatballs, sausage, eggplant, and peppers, all under cheese, the special represents the most Boyardee-ish element of its otherwise above-average selection of Italian classics. Just spent Memorial day weekend on the island and came here a couple of times. The people here were clearly newly staffed and had no idea what they were doing when it came to ordering breakfast (burnt bagel, didn't know how to make tea) and their pastries are just ok. Pricey for the mediocre service and food. Maybe things will be better later in the summer season. However, as an ice cream fanatic, I highly recommend coming here for a scoop. This restaurant specializes in Italian food, which is very much a Rhode Island staple. It is located behind the main stretch (Water Street). It has both indoor and outdoor seating, and there is a combination bakery/ice cream place that is also a part of this complex. We visited for lunch on a Monday. The restaurant wasn't busy given the weather (overcast) and the day of the week. We were actually greeted by one of the waitstaff, and the host/hostess stand was crowded with bored waiters and waitresses mostly goofing off. Our waitress did a good job serving us--we had our food in a timely manner and there were no mistakes--but she clearly preferred to hang out with the other staff, and it appeared that serving us bored her quite considerably. The way out of the restaurant, when we got up to leave, was completely blocked by the same group of bored staff, and we had to walk around them. As for the food, there were some highlights. We ordered the bruchetta appetizer, and the unique take was quite refreshing--beans and cherry tomatoes in a tomato broth served with garlic bread. My partner had a puttenesca pizza, which he really enjoyed. I ordered the pasta pomedoro, and it was very disappointing--the sauce was likely directly out of a jar, dominated by tomato puree with one basil leaf floating around in it. Absolutely not worth nearly $14.00. There are many great places to eat on Block Island, so you may want to skip this one. The pizza is good, but you may want to opt for take out, of they offer it. It may be best for the owners to consider hiring a full time manager here to address staff issues. read more

Ugh! So we wandered around BI our first night trying to decide where to go out for dinner. The places along Water Street seemed a bit pricey (we didn't know about Mohegan Cafe!) so we ventured a block inland. The outdoor patio at Aldo's looked inviting. After checking out the menu and discovering that smoking wasn't allowed on the patio, we took the plunge. I ordered PEI mussels appetizer and split the House Salad for two with my wife. Several of the mussels had grit in them - for the record, I'm not a fan of crunchy mussels. The broth that came with the mussels was just blah. The House Salad was nothing special. Overall, a very mediocre meal that wasn't all that cheap. Not sure that we had the same waiter as Mike M. but the service could have been better especially since they weren't that busy. When I related my Aldo's experience with a few of the BI taxi drivers they all agreed that there were much better places to eat on the island. read more

We went there for lunch while visiting Block Island. The food was medicore, but that was to be expected it being so close to the ferry area. I had the rigatoni and meat sauce, which was okay. My wife had a grilled mahi sandwich, which was very bland. My kids had the chicken noodle soup and some pasta w/ marinara sauce. Service could use improvement. Our family has been sailing to Block Island for 10 years. It is part of our tradition to drink their coffee and eat their pastry and muffins at our boat in Great Salt Pond. When in town, we hit Aldos! My first reason is that they allow my small sweet dog to sit outside under the umbrella. He goes on a long walk with me and while the kids hit the shops, Mom and Dog are comfortable. Our dog loves the meatballs. I love the drinks, chatting with others at the tables and enjoy the eggplant park sandwich. The service is excellent and I am happy to hear how much these students from Europe like Block and their off island travels. On the way out I treat myself to a cone from the adjacent ice cream/bakery business. They are sweet, and sometimes very busy !!! read more

Worst breakfast on Block Island. I got the "special" eggs, tater tots, 3 mini pancakes and turkey sausage for $6.99. It was supposed to come with a muffin, but did not. The way the rest of the breakfast tasted I'm probably better off. The scrambled eggs were dry and had some weird orange looking stuff on part of it, maybe it was cheese, but I didn't ask for any and it was hard to know exactly what it was. The pancakes were hard, there was maybe a spoonful of edible bit in the middle, but not worth even looking. The tater tots must have been from the night before, totally inedible. The turkey sausage and English muffin I paid extra for was actually good as was the iced tea. The dude behind the counter was busting his ass and deserves props for being that. We ate there for lunch with 4 adults and 4 small children. They were very accommodating to the children, bringing out crayons and paper. The lunches came out quickly as well. Everything was very good, the service was very solid as well. They had a decent sized menu as well. I had eaten there in the past and enjoyed their food as well. This review is for breakfast, not the bakery or other parts of Aldo's. Came here for breakfast at 1030 on a Sunday and ordered the Andiamo platter ('Eggs', pancakes, home fries and meat (bacon)). Almost 30 minutes later we received the platters with kale (raw), approximately 1/2 scrambled egg, and cold bacon, pancakes and home fry bits. Absolutely terrible. Andiamo means 'let's go' in Italian. My advice is 'Let's go -- somewhere else for breakfast!'. Ps Staff and location are excellent but can't save the food experience. Sunday Night five of us came to Aldo's for dinner. A great atmosphere, and great service. Many of great choices, from Italian to sea food. The fried scallops were cooked perfectly, and the fries were the best I had in q while. The sea food platter was very injoyable and the tuna was cooked to perfection. This was a nice surprise for us finding this restaurant. We were on vacation with our yachts in Block island for the week, we saw Aldo's while walking down town, some of us were craving for Italian food and some for seafood. The kids were excited for some pizza, se we were seated at Aldo's and shortly after we made an order. What a great surprise, the food was delicious, the service was great, we had a mix of appetizers and all was fantastic. We were very happy and we were a large group. Now it happened to be that I forgot my credit card on the table. I only found out after we were back at the marina so called the restaurant and they went for a search, they surly found the credit card on the table. I asked them to hold to it as we were planning to be back the following day how ever this didn't happened, we had to leave a bit early so now I called and asked them to put it in the mail for me. I wish I remembered the name of the lady I spoke to, she said Yes so fast it was very nice. Today less than a week after o got the card in the mail at home. So thank you Aldo's employees. read more

Well this place absolutely sucks. First of all the service is terrible. The waitresses behave as if you're the one thing between them spending the day at the beach or being stuck in this rat hole. Also, every overpriced miniature burger that they offer you doesn't even come with French fries, clearly violating an ESSENTIAL American tradition. And last but not least, most folks like to enjoy a nice hot dinner roll before their hopefully satisfying meal, but this place can't even offer some practically worthless starch to their hungry customers. I'm giving one star because our server Chris was very nice and kept apologizing. This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I ever had with my family. They took 30 min to bring our drinks then we placed our orders and 15 min later the server came back and said they had run out of clam strips so we reordered and the whole experience took over 2 hours. But the more upsetting part was that the owner was sitting in the table right next to us and she could hear as talking about it and she didn't do anything about. There was no soap in the bathrooms. My problem with this restaurant is with the service. We went there Friday 6/7/19 night around 6 pm a party of three woman. We were seated promptly and our waitress arrived asking if we wanted a drink. We asked for ice water while we decided what to order. After our orders were taken we noticed that a couple who had been seated after us were enjoying a bread basket. We were not served one nor were we asked if we wanted bread. Our meals arrived quickly. The food was ok, nothing great. The waitress appeared as soon as one of us put the fork down and whisked away the empty plate. She did this three times! The bus person arrived as we were settling the bill and grabbed our water glasses.i have never had a bus person clear the table while still seated. We still had water. We looked at our billing the time stamp and realized that the whole meal lasted about a half hour. Maybe it was because we weren't ordering wine or other liquor that they rushed us out to free up the table,however, there was only one large party and two other occupied tables in the restaurant. I doubt they needed the table. Poor service. Poor attitude. Clearly didn't want us to linger over our meal. read more

I have posted about Aldo's in the past after eating at the restaurant which I will say was great. This time my family was on Block Island celebrating my parents 50th wedding anniversary and we had them cater a clam bake. Anna and Steve were very accommodating, easy to work with and answered every request we made. They provided, chowder, mussels, clams, potatoes, sausage, corn, watermelon and obviously lobster. All of it was very tasty, there was plenty of food and really reasonable price.
