I asked my girlfriend to pick up food after reading all the great reviews about this place. As soon as she got back, the first thing she said was how nice everyone was. Funny enough, I hadn't even told her that's what most of the reviews mentioned, so they must really be that friendly! Now onto the food... wow. They have the most amazing pastrami and corned beef I've ever had. I ordered the #9 The Wrecker!! Which is a pressed panini sandwich. It instantly shot into my top 3 sandwiches of all time. No exaggeration. We also got a quart of the pea soup, and I'm not kidding, it's the best I've ever had. Rich, hearty, and full of flavor. If this deli was closer, I'd be eating there at least twice a week. Can't wait to go back and try more of the menu. Highly recommend! read more

After reading reviews from others I need to just add to my review below. Alan is curt, you feel rushed, questions are answered before you even finish your sentence, I do not like going to this Deli. It is worth the trip to go to Bagel Chateau in Westfield or Livingston Bagel to mention just a couple. I really only go there when I am lazy for chicken soup (but very salty) ...well venturing out from my usual order in two separate visits. I purchased roasted chicken (now mind you what I saw was an average adult size leg and thigh...when I opened it at home the two portions were HUGE!!! I was able to definitely get four healthy portions - only needed two) in my trip before this past weekend I asked, but could not see breaded chicken breasts - and asked for two - HUGE and DRY - $17 wasted - also purchased chicken kabobs and asked if they were really good, "of course"!!! - NOT!!! - $18 wasted - just dry!!!) mind you, my husband will eat anything chicken - he tasted both and I ended up preparing grilled cheese! I will ONLY stick to their chicken soup and the knishes are good (moist and not dry - definitely cannot be healthy). I am really afraid of wasting $ and trying other things and I have been going there for several years. On a Sunday my usual egg sando place had grill problems so I came over to Alen's Deli for the first time. Ordered an egg and cheese and a sausage egg and cheese. On this day it was a one man operation but the wait is worth it as it is clear each order is made with care. My egg sandwich were delicious and beautiful. Two eggs each cooked perfectly. Each ingredient stack with engineered perfection. The bread!! The bread makes a difference! Was soft and crispy, a perfect bread to egg ratio. Hot, fresh and delicious. [2.25 Stars] To state that I had my first corned beef sandwich before I grew teeth would be hyperbole-- but probably not far from the truth. Before deli became trendy, that special evening when dinner was a trip to a great deli was always memorable. As an adult, Clark's Deli King or (maybe) the Millburn Deli are the "gold standard" of NJ deli's. In COVID-19 stricken 2020, the close-to-home stand-in was a drive to Alen's. We ordered two King Sloppy Joe's (corned beef and pastrami, of course) and arrived at their arranged pick-up time. It was at that point that they began making our sandwiches. The gentleman who appeared to be the manager (owner?) was very angry about something, but everyone else was nice. We ate our sandwiches at home. While reasonably generous in size for the price ($14.95 each), the let-down was unquestionably the quality of the corned beef, pastrami, Russian dressing and cole slaw (both commercial-grade). The consistency of the meats identified them as a Boar's Head-type processed meat product, rather than deli. The verdict: very disappointing. read more

If i could give this place negative stars i would. I'm so disappointed. The delivery came on time so maybe it deserves 1 star for the delivery person. That's it. Our sandwiches are ICE cold are bland and disgusting. Please look at this charred potato pancake they were proud to deliver and call it a potato pancake. Shameful. We had to heat up our ice cold chicken in the oven to make sure it was cooked all the way through. How do you serve this food to customers and hold your head up high? Id much rather give positive reviews to give credit where credit is due. But this one deserves it. I hope the owner is made aware. read more

I wish my only job was to seek out awesome delis ! This one is at the top of my list. I'm newer in town and just was able to get to Alen's. God do I feel silly for waiting so long. This is one of the places you walk in and you automatically are treated like family. No one rushes you, great selection, and a good amount of seating. I ordered a JR Sloppy Joe with roast beef and turkey. The meat was sliced super thin, plenty of Russian and the coleslaw was delish. The Rye was so soft. Eh. disappointed! I got a turkey and cheese sandwich. Meat was all bunched up I actually had to take the sandwich apart and put it back together. Meat to Cheese ratio was way off. We just moved to Springfield New Jersey a few months ago and have found the food and the people who run Alen's to be the best!! We just had them cater our family Seder this past Saturday and I can't tell you enough how pleased we were. It's not just a Deli, they are full service caterers (tables, chairs, linens, silver, china, wonderful servers, and great food and plenty of it) They are the nicest people to deal with and they gave us much more than we expected....on a handshake. Went in for lunch on a whim today and was pleasantly surprised. Place is very clean & friendly. It has a free parking lot adjacent to the bldg which is always very nice. I had the # 7 Philadelphia grilled panini which included roast beef carmelized onions cheddar cheese and chipotle sauce on a flatbread. Extremely tasty and comes with a side of potato chips. I live in Miami and am too far to "check in" however I ordered from them over the phone. I wanted to send a nice platter to a family funeral. They were so nice and took my order over the phone. Looked for my review a week after I posted it and for some reason it was gone... Last couple of experiences were terrible; ordered sandwiches which were served on stale bread. On the menu, sandwiches are to be served with a pickle which I have never received. Also, the sandwiches are very pricey and there is very little deli meat included. On another occasion, ordered chicken salad platter and bit into a bone. Upon returning it the owner he was extremely curt and argumentative and insisted it was all white meat. Very expensive sandwiches that cannot compare to other delis in nearby neighborhoods whatsoever. Also, the matzo ball soup is loaded with salt; cabbage soup is quite good. When ordering soup, you don't even get a piece of bread or crackers. The quality of the food is at best average. read more

Read on Yelp that this deli had good corned beef. Since I spend time in Delray Beach FL where I go to the 3 G"s deli the bar was pretty. Still I had a corned beef craving. If I was to rate the sandwich on a scale of 1 to 5. I would give it a 3.5. Service was good. Price was good. I brought home the picked for my wife who took one bite and through it out. Top of the line! This place will make you overeat but you'll be happy doing it. I ordered #3 on their Grilled Panini menu, the "Heart Stopper"- super juicy and tender pastrami and brisket, a perfect potato pancake, and coleslaw topped with Russian dressing on flat bread (top and bottom). It came with ridged potato chips and a sour pickle with a slight, delicious funky taste. The potato pancake's fried texture and rich potato goodness really pushed this panini over the top. It arrived in four pieces and I planned to eat just one but ended up having two and look forward to having the rest tomorrow. It was that good. My hubby had #9, "The Wrecker"- corned beef, pastrami, Swiss cheese, coleslaw, and Russian dressing on rye. I heard it calling my name and had to take a bite. The meats were very tender without any stringiness. The entire combo was heaven! For dessert, we had some chocolate Italian Florentine/lace cookies. Same story. Finally found some amazing food in Springfield!! We had Alen's delivered this past Friday night when we were way too exhausted to cook. They have a good selection on their menu and I ordered the White Russian Panini and my husband got Briana's Delight Panini and their chicken noodle soup. Our food arrived probably 15 minutes after we ordered- super fast! I don't have pictures to share because it looked so good we had to dig in immediately. Both of our paninis were loaded and not just with filler shredded lettuce/tomato. The soup arrived hot and perfectly seasoned, not like a lot of the crazy bland options that are local. We couldn't believe that this gem is right around the corner from us and we never knew! Do yourself a favor and get Alen's for lunch or dinner. Great food, great atmosphere. I purchased the vegetarian wrap and it was spectacular. While most places fill their veggie wrap with lettuce, there was none to be scene here. It was filled with a plethora of goodness. I was very impressed with my meal as was everyone in my group. This was an additional benefit of the place. I have been going to Alen's since it opened in Springfeld. When it first opened I was very impressed with the quality of the food. However, I find it very inconsistent. One time I ordered chopped liver and it was incredible. Two weeks later I ordered it again and it was mediocre. One time I ordered a corn beef sandwich and the bread was stale and so were the chips. Again a few weeks ago I ordered fresh turkey. It was delicious. Today I ordered it again and the turkey was fair and the bread at least a day old. They need to get their act together and be consistent if they want to survive in the very difficult restaurant business. read more
