I want to say a few words about Federico Lupo who cuts hair at the Alessandro Mangerini Salon. I met him when he was at John Sahag, over a decade ago, and I have been going to see him ever since, whenever I am in town. Federico seems like a relaxed, easy going guy when you first see him--skinny, casual, unrushed, his hair a kind of mop that, one understands without thinking, is something that seems almost accidental in its arrangement, but is not. It's all lanky easy going handshakes when you walk in; everyone is nice; they wash your hair and deliver you like a little wrapped present in your robe to his chair, maybe bring you a beverage on ice in the summer, or something hot in the winter. Then, after a little discussion, Federico gets to work. At which point Federico's face resolves into a look of concentration that verges of the severe. The transformation is almost amusing, but the primary response I have to this fierce concentration is to feel reassured. He's got scissors, a comb, a clip, but it's as though that gaze is doing much of the actual work of shaping your hair--as though Federico were a particularly effective and stern parent who could get his children to snap into line with a mere glance. As it happens Federico is a parent. Somewhere along the line I became one, too. There is usually some banter about the nature of children, of being a parent, specifics and generalities. He is able to maintain his concentration, and expression, throughout our chats. At Mangerini there is a kind of mayhem all around - this is a guy's point of view, it applies to most high end places I have seen. The men or women doing the styling and cutting stand behind chairs and, together with the person sitting, the subject of the cut, gaze intensely in the mirror as though into a crystal ball. Together, they imagine the future. Then they begin. Federico has this bent at the knees posture when he works. He wants to get eye level with the hair, see it. At this sort of salon, at this price, the practice of cutting hair is concerned above all with matters of physics--everyone is working, one way or the other, towards the condition of a sustainable defiance of gravity, a task at which Federico Lupo is a master. His attitude while working is important in many respects. Most important among them--he is very good at cutting hair. But also because it is good to feel he is totally committed to the task, focused. His vibe overall has a slightly rambunctious, let-the-chips-fall-where-they-may quality, while at the same time suggesting a personality that is fastidious to the extreme and obsessed with precision. Since I travel I don't go to him regularly, but I have noticed that on the occasion that my picture runs in a magazine, it is usually one where he has cut my hair. His concentration also disarms and calms you, and this is important when getting your hair cut. To enter the sort of high end salon where Federico works is to encounter the chaos of a zoo where the animals have all escaped and the trainers are pleading and cajoling with them to get back in their cages. At least that is how it seems to be, though it may be that as a man I am simply intimidated by the highly female energy of such places. Obviously most of the people there are women. I am always suspicious of all the other men. What is wrong with you that you are so vain that you must go to a place like this? I ask while sitting in my chair. Then I look in the mirror. When I need or want to look good it is to Federico that I go. I will report that I saw a woman leaving Mangerini after my last visit with the most opulently buoyant hair I have ever seen, the color a light, glowing chestnut. Her dress, shoes, and vibe were a bit Jackie O in her Onassis period, but also with the a quality that suggested she could curse in Italian. And she was with a poodle. The bounce in her hair mirrored the confidant bounce in her step--both were incredible. Federico is who I turn to when I wanted to it to be known I don't have a care in the world and that I am doing well. And Federico is who I turned to when I needed a haircut for my wedding. And both of these cuts looked rather similar, come to think of it, yet they were also different. And they were both just right. read more

Finding the perfect stylist is just as important as finding a trustworthy nanny or a good dog walker. Although I don't have kids, or a dog, I'm fairly certain about this. Gregory Wilde, a stylist at Alessandro Mangerini, was recommended to me through one of my friends who is a model here in the city. Her hair always looked flawless, so I decided to give him a call, as my hair "situation" was getting quite out of control. I hadn't gotten a decent haircut or color in at least two years! Everyone at the salon was super nice and friendly. The salon is gorgeous, with an outdoor seating area to enjoy complimentary coffee while your color sets. Gregory really listened to what I wanted and what I didn't want in a hair cut and with my highlights. I always get nervous, because I want my highlights to look very natural. Gregory did such a fabulous job, my hair turned out perfectly. He listened to exactly what I wanted, and I could not have been more happy. His fun and outgoing personality is the cherry on top, and I would highly recommend that anyone looking for a whole new style, color switch up, extensions, or just a touch up or trim, go to Gregory. His quality of work and fabulousness is all Manhattan, without the often insane Manhattan price tag. read more

I'm an actor living in NYC and LA. I met Linda through a mutual friend and the minute she saw me she told me, "Who cuts your hair? I can do it better" in a very NY no BS kinda way...So I went in to check it out. Not only did Linda give me a haircut that fits my face better but it grows out into another cut by itself. So I have the flexibility to go back in 3 weeks if I want the same short cut or if I'm busy wait 8 weeks and it still looks great. The first time I went in she paired me up with Kelly (a colorist) to also fix the tone. When you work under bright lights like I do for a living, the tone of the hair changes and you need to combat that with color in the opposite direction. Not only did Kelly make the natural tone better, but when I work under the lights, the red tint has completely vanished. I'm pretty confident in life, but when you have close to 100 people staring at you on a set, you want to look your absolute best. And now I know I do, so I walk in ready to rock n' roll. read more

I fell in love with this salon from the second it opened and have been a loyal client ever since. From the moment you walk in, you're enveloped in a sense of calm and serenity--a very rare feeling in most salons! And the staff couldn't be lovelier, from the receptionists to the assistant stylists. I am incredibly lucky to count myself as one of Alessandro Mangerini's clients--he has an innate elegance and a great eye, not to mention his technique is impeccable. I trust him completely, whether I'm getting a simple trim or looking to play with a new hairstyle. And though I've never seen any of the salon's other stylists, whenever I'm there I can observe they all have strong rapports with their respective clients. I cannot say enough good things about Alessandro Mangerini Salon, particularly stylist Lind Marie Francipane. I have followed Linda Marie from salon to salon, because she is the absolute best at thermal reconditioning/straightening, but Alessandr Mangerini is by far my favorite salon. Linda was trained by a pioneer in the field of thermal reconditioning, and it is obvious. As Linda's client, I have enjoyed over 10 years of perfect hair days, which is miraculous as anyone with unruly wavy or curly hair can say. Silky shampoo-commercial hair every day, no matter the weather or the climate. Linda also cuts and styles magnificently, hair looks great even growing out. Ludovich has been coloring my hair for over 12 years. He's an artist and a genius. I completely trust him. I have light blonde hair. He's achieved natural tones/ highlights and low lights. Before him, my hair would always get too light from other colorists or in bad condition. Under his care, my hair is in incredible condition and i get compliments almost daily. He's incredible with blondes and from what I've seen, all hair colors. I also use Connor at the salon for blowouts and, more recently cuts. He's a gift too! I have never written one of these, but as a New Yorker who has frequented all of the best salons, I have to say Alessandro fixed my hair after a horrific hair cut that I got at an well known upper east side salon. My shoulder length hair had about 5 different hair cuts in it with multiple uneven layers. It looked like a 5 year old cut it. Without taking any length or cutting any additional layers, Alessandro was able to use his artistic eye, technical genius and skill to fix what I thought impossible. He actually turned it into an excellent hair cut. The salon itself is relaxed for an UES place with an open feel and a relaxed vibe. I am very satisfied and will be going back. read more

Followed my 2 favorite people, Lisa DeGiacomo (colorist) and Paula Rivera (stylist) from RoyTee Luck to Alessandro Mangerini. Lisa and Paula are 2 of the best in the industry...they are the ultimate perfectionists and always do an amazing job on my hair! In fact, I am living in Italy but come back to Ny just to get my hair done by Lisa and Paula. As an added bonus, Alessandro Mangerini is a great salon...bright, open space and a terrace where you can get your hair or nails done if you want. Everyone I've dealt with from reception personnel to shampooers to colorist to stylist have been top notch, My hair stylist Linda - who I followed here from a different salon- is a lovely, talented professional. She's been cutting my hair for years and I always feel taken care of in the best possible way. She's truly there for YOU and the cuts are a reflection of that thoughtfulness and expertise. I first had my hair cut by Thomas Clancy when he worked at Sahag. (He's still on their website). He had just joined A.M. Salon when he cut my hair last. This was the best cut he did as well as the best cut I've ever had. He literally spent around 2 hours (mind you I have thick, long hair). He talked about John Sahag having been "a creative genius before his time" during my cut, but Thomas has become one in his own right. I knew I was a rock star, but now I feel like one :) His cuts are not cheap, but it's well worth the extra money if you can afford it. read more

Alessandro does both my cut and color. I trust his opinion completely with his suggestions and I'm always beyond happy with the results. He also does incredible blowouts, and I've gone to him several times when I had to attend events. The salon itself is beautiful with a large outdoor terrace that overlooks Madison Avenue. Its a relaxing atmosphere. The service is always impeccable and everyone who works there is friendly and polite. Linda Francipane the stylist there has been cutting my hair for 15 years now. She does amazing work. I get compliments always. Sometimes from strangers on the street. She gives me a great layers and has styled my hair on special occasions. Even my wedding! She is now cutting my hair of my 8 year old boy since his birth. I recommended her to friends and now she has been cutting there hair for years too. They got hooked like I did! I totally recommend her. The salon is also beautiful with an outdoor space and bar. Tim has been cutting and coloring my hair for almost 5 years and he's as good as it gets in NYC and worth his rates.
