When I first moved back to Southgate from down south I would go to eat here on a regular basis and the food was always pretty good , I do like to try many different restaurants and I haven't been there in probably more than a year, it is only a few blocks from my house and I was busy all day and had not eaten and didn't care to cook at 8:45 PM, I called my go to place and they were closing so I went to Alex Kabob well people I see all the great reviews, all I can say is no one must be paying attention when they stand at the counter to pay the bill or pickup a carry out the kitchen is filthy nasty dirty disgusting, and it was Saturday February 9th 2019 and 13 degrees outside and there was flies flying around in the kitchen, all I can say is eat at your own risk , actually not sure how they pass a health inspection. read more

I usually come here for the fresh juice when I am home visiting. I have been coming here for a while now and the food is generally good. I was not happy with my ghallaba recently. The flavor is very good but if you want to charge this much for a dinner entrée, it should have more than $1 worth of chicken. The veggies are good but onion, carrot, and pepper are fairly inexpensive. The rice is good and well seasoned, as is the hummus. This entrée is also $3 more than some nearby places charge. It needed about triple the amount of chicken. The lentil soup is also more watery than most places. I will say that the chicken schwarma and the baklava is very good and the staff is always nice. read more

Very disappointing. After reading several good reviews on Yelp and looking over their menu online I decided to order carry out on a Tuesday night. I ordered the Alex Plate, which according to their menu online consists of the following: Alex Plate $26.99 (Chicken Shawarma, fried Kibbee, Grape Leaves, Shish Tawook, Shish Kafta, Falafel, Hommous, Rice & Salad). Here is what we actually got: Chicken Shawarma (cold, no flavor), Shish Tawook (mediocre), Shish Kafta (burnt, dry), Falafel (hard as a rock), Rice (good), grape leaves (dry, no flavor), salad (way too large of a portion compared to everything else, dressing lacked flavor), and some cold pita bread. No Hommous, No Fried Kibbee. I usually don't write a place off after just 1 try but I don't think i'll be going back here. To sum it up, dry cold food with no flavor that's over priced and I didn't even get everything that I was supposed to get according to their menu. read more

I go to a lot of Lebanese places in Dearborn. Yet this is my favorite place. They have the best hummus that I've had compared to anywhere else. I'm partial to the simple things. Chicken shawarma is my favorite. The fried kibbi is also good. However the real reason I love this place is the staff. They're why I always come back. Their family run, the father runs the place, the kids do the waiting, and they're amazing. Friendly, funny, smart, full of conversation, they're a laugh. It's definitely a hole in the wall, and when it's cold outside, they'll direct you to the warmer side of the restaurant for your sake. After Church my friend and I headed to Thai Place, a little Thai food restaurant down from our Church. Well it didnt open until noon so my friend said lets go to my favorite Middle Eastern restaurant down the road further called Alex's Kabob House its in an old Taco Bell building. I said oh great this ought to be good, fast food middle Eastern wanna be food. So we went in and I noticed how clean the place place was. No sticky floors and dirty salt and pepper shakers like I was expecting. We were greeted by a very friendly young man whom I later found out his name was Salem. He was prompt and courteous. He took our drink order and brought us out some fresh warm pita bread and garlic sauce. I of course got all excited, for one thing I thought free garlic sauce and hot bread, Sweet! I asked if he had anything on special and he told us the lunch specials were on the front page but they also have a special simply called the Today Special that comes with chicken breasts, rice, salad and Hummus for $9.99. That sounded wonderful so I ordered and was not disappointed. Great portions, wonderful flavors and moist tender cut with your fork chicken. I liked that this restaurant is geared towards healthy eating because everything was prepared with quality ingredients, baked pita on my Fattoush and you could just tell the cooks are doing it right. The hummus had just the right amount of lemon/ garlic ratio. The garlic sauce was outstanding, I had that on everything. The rice had a nice flavor also. I asked if they had almonds for their rice and they gave me a nice portion to add. He said they dont put them in because of nut allergies which is a great idea. I also ordered the fresh made lemonade, which Salem said how bout I make you what I call a Lemonade smoothie. I agreed and it was so refreshing and delicious. Perfect sweetness and tartness. Well needless to say I couldnt finish everything so lunch for tomorrow. Im definitely coming back after church again or when Im in the area. Im from the Garden City area so its a bit out of my area. Give this place a try and dont let the smallness of the building discourage you. The staff and cook is awesome and made us feel like we were family. read more

The worst part about moving to Chicago was knowing I wouldn't be able to eat here anymore. Alex Kebab House is easily the best middle eastern food downriver. The garlic sauce is amazing, hummus is top notch, and I haven't had a single dish here that didn't blow me away. Best thing on the menu: lamb gallaba. Every where I go, no one seems to have heard of it, and the recipes online don't do it justice. I would eat their lamb gallaba daily, for every meal if I could. read more

Ordered the Alex Plate as a carry out this weekend. It came with a huge serving of rice, shish tawook, lamb kafta kebab, and some other chicken. It also came with a few stuffed grape leaves, two falafel, two kibbees, a large order of hummous and we upgraded to the fattoush. They gave us a lot of bread, which I usually love, but the bread was slightly stale. I like it when is fresh and chewy like when you pick it up from New Yasmeen. Overall it was a lot of food and tasted great. The takeout packaging left the hot food hot and the cold food cold. The service was very friendly and helpful. I had my baby with me and so they carried the order to my car and put it in my trunk for me. I would definitely return. read more

Unfortunately, I have to downgrade my review of Alex Kabob after eating there a few times recently. The food has really gone downhill. Especially my order last night--the lentil soup tasted awful..like it was runny and just full of oil. The falafel was dry and hard as a rock and not very tasty or seasoned as well. The chicken we ordered also seemed dry. It just seems whomever is cooking no longer puts effort or love into it. Not sure what happened to this place as it used to be really great but after last night's order and a few other times of disappointing experiences, I probably won't be going back for awhile. Owner and Manager is great - been going there for a long time. BUT who-ever they have answering phones is horrible. After being on hold for a long time she comes to phone and then it goes dead again with hold....there are other restaurants in the area where professional services are required by staff and they are better trained. I order there whenever I'm Downriver visiting my husband's folks and man do we love the Deboned Chicken! the whole order is so huge it can easily feed 4 people so it is a really good deal. We come to Michigan about twice a year to visit the hub's family. Alex Kabob is a must visit everytime we come into town. Usually we head there strait from the airport it's that good. Everything we've had on the menu is delicious. It all tastes homemade and fresh to order. Our usuals are the fatoosh, hummus, baba ghanoush, garlic sauce with pita bread and the chicken tawook. First off, the inside of the restaurant was filthy. It seemed that a good cleaning was in order about a year prior. I returned home with my food and the chicken was very fatty.
