What an amazing night! My husband booked a private room for a surprise birthday dinner. Our server Laurencio was very friendly. My husband picked all the delicious food that we shared. Salads, hamachi shots, tartare de boeuf, steaks were also incredible! That Australian tomahawk sent by the chef was perfectly aged and cooked. Looking forward to the next excuse to go to Alexander's. We celebrated Mother's Day at Alexandra Steakhouse this weekend and I brought my mom here as it was new for her but I have been to their other locations in the past. The service here was excellent and no complaints while the portion sizes were abysmally smaller than expected for their Mother's Day menu, the quality of the food was hit and miss as my duck was super over cooked and my dad's steak incredibly rare. The service was top-notch - our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and made great recommendations. The Mother's Day menu was creative and delicious just child size portions. Despite the smaller portions, we appreciated the exceptional service. Would recommend for a special occasion, but be prepared for a higher price-to-portion ratio and maybe skip the special menu. Did the $185 omakase - it was great value and included A5. I was super pleased and surprised with the complimentary yuzu cheesecake that cane after the strawberry mousse cake. I was also pleasantly delighted with the pork kakuni that was reminiscent of elevated pork belly and quail eggs. Overall, beautiful plating. The only parts of the omakase I firmly believe should not be in there: the beet salad and the lobster ravioli. The beet salad could have benefitted from more cheese and less beet. The lobster ravioli smelled funky but tasted better than it smelled. Our server, Tim, was attentive and everyone was super hospitable! Parking is validated for two hours downstairs. Ambience: there were people who were dressed in golf polos but also people who dressed business casual. Lights are nice and dim, it's a very romantic place. It's not easy to find the perfect special occasion restaurant, especially when you have both a birthday and an anniversary. When asking a good friend for ideas in Pasadena with a patio, he said Alexander's was THE place--and he was right. We booked an early dinner outside on their covered patio overlooking the fountain. Our wonderful server, Nathan, made the whole experience perfect. We were going to order two of the California ribeye chops, but he made a great case for ordering one 28 ounce Westholme F1 wagyu from Australia, telling us about the origin. He guaranteed we would love the flavor and tenderness. He didn't mention it, but I noted the added bonus was we saved by going this route. After enjoying our celebratory glasses of Brut, a perfect Old Fashioned and the wonderful bread and butter assortment (prime rib bits was my favorite), we had the don't-miss Hamachi shots. They are happy to serve you less than the flight of six listed, so we chose to have three. Next we devoured a generous bone marrow with warm freshly-toasted crostini. Then the fabulous wagyu ribeye appeared sliced on a large platter garnished with roasted garlic, onion and lemon. It was, hands down, the best steak I've ever had, cooked to a perfect medium-rare. It didn't need sauce, the meat was so flavorful. The portion was generous, so we opted to take home a few slices and the bone. For dessert, we loved the triple chocolate delight and their famous cheesecake and berries. Finally, our last treat was their festive cotton candy which was surprisingly delicious. Every step of the way, Nathan made us feel relaxed and took perfect care of us, even taking the time to shoot photos from both sides so we'd have both the patio view and the fountain background. I have enjoyed many a time at this restaurant. Food is solid - atmosphere is easy. There was an odd experience on Mother's Day when waiter after waiter, bartender after bartender would take all but one person's order in our party (who happened to be Black). Mind you - it was 4 of us sitting at the bar, so the physical proximity from waiter to customer is pretty close, it was not as if we were at a big crowded table where a customer could get unnoticed in the mix. I struggle with comparing the other fine times to this time (thus the 3 stars) - but there might be an opportunity for implicit bias training with staff and to continue forward in a positive way and making sure inclusivity is at the center of service and making sure to take orders of not just white patrons but people of color. read more

I think this place is a great steakhouse, but stick to the steak. I got the duck breast, but only received 2 bites. What in the world are you doing with the other 80% of the breast? It was embarrassing with my inability to eat beef to be stuck with a sample of what a duck breast would taste like. This place is amazing!!! I don't know how I've never been here. We had a very large party so we got a private room and the menu was semi preset. We got a couple of starters including oysters and bacon wrapped shrimp. The prefixe included a salad, entree, and dessert. Everything was delicious and well presented. The food is gross. The only redeeming parts of the meal were the wine, the fries, and the bread -- which, to be fair, were excellent. Everything else was honestly disappointing. The meat was shockingly bad for a steakhouse, and the rest of the dishes were overwhelmed with unexpected Japanese-style flavors. Came for a birthday dinner on a Friday night. Reservations were easy to make - wasn't too busy. Parking garage is convenient, next to Alexander's and they validate. The ambiance was nice casual and classy. Service was excellent; Lawrencio and his team were wonderful. He accommodated with all our requests and checked up on us frequently. Drinks - Started us off with a complimentary glass of champagne. One of my friends do not drink alcohol, but offered him a non-alcoholic drink too. We also ordered a bottle of moscato d'asti (Vietti) and I loved it. Sweet enough where I can't taste the actual alcohol content. The price is tripled, but given it's a restaurant, we expected it. Food - I recommend doing family style if it's a group, so you can try a bit of everything! Bread - Complimentary; great way to start the meal! It was fresh and warm. There were 3 kinds of bread and butter. The flavors were Hokkaido, squid ink and cheese, which was my favorite. Hamachi Shots - Recommended to take all in one mouth full; it was refreshing. At the end, all the sourness and zing from the ponzu hits you. It was a great appetizer and I would order again. Sugar Snap Peas Salad - The greens and the salad dressing did not go together imo, it tasted off, possibly because I'm used to sugar snap peas cooked, but this was raw. I wouldn't order again. Kimchi Fried Rice - No add ons but this was one of my favorite sides! Very umami with every bite and the portion was worth the price, perfect for sharing. Ribeye, American Wagyu - Ordered medium as recommended, and this cut/flavor hit the spot. I kept gravitating towards this one, obviously because wagyu with more flavor. The size is no joke and we even had leftovers! We paired the sides with mash potatoes, mac and cheese and fries. The winner was mac and cheese - string cheese pull as a bonus! Another successful bday celebration for my mom, and Fabian is amazing and he continues to provide top notch service. This is a must try steakhouse, TRUST ME!! Their summer menu has several new dishes, like the octopus which comes with a raspberry vinaigrette and their signature pineapple chips. We had the classic Hamachi shots and of course this combination is perfect, love the spicy kick. We also tried their new wagyu nigiri and it just melts in your mouth. For dinner, we had their T-bone with buttery mashed potatoes and asparagus. I was skeptical about the asparagus but the pistachio, avocado, and green sauce was fantastic. It's been a long time since the last time I came back to Alexander's and I must say that I noticed a few changes, but overall this experience was excellent. Our server Steven (which I think was his name) was excellent as well as the other waiters who kept refilling our drinks and kept checking up on us. We started with a Caesar Salad which was delicious. This was my first time trying the Australian Wagyu Filet and although smaller than I thought it would be, it was still pretty tasty. We came here to celebrate a birthday for dinner. We made a reservation ahead of time since they're busy and finally reopened recently. When we arrived we parked downstairs and came up the stairs and ran in as it was raining. The parking is only complimentary for 2 hours, so you'd have to pay the rest if you stay longer, which is most likely going to be the case. We ordered a variety of appetizers to share and each tried an item from the menu as our main dish. For appetizers we got the oysters (yummy but small in size), 2 bone marrows (2 share, yummy and comes with a little bread to serve; good portion for 6 people), calliflower dish, mashed potatoes, and the bread that comes with dining there. The appetizer bread is amazing. It comes with a variety of kinds of bread and butter to try. For the main dishes, we ordered the Kansas City steak cut, lamb chops, and a few other cuts of the steak, and the lobster noodles. It was more than enough food to share. The meats were more cooked than we requested, so that's something to note. If you want medium rare, just order rare. Portion was decently large so that was nice. Staff was friendly, and conversed with us quite a bit. The bathroom was nice and clean as well (just a mention). Overall ambiance of the restaurant was nice, and had dark lighting. This was probably my tenth time dining here, and I'm not much of a reviewer (or anything else really, like... let's be real) but you know how sometimes something or someone just inexplicably compels you to do something? For me, that someone was our waiter, Frederic. That man knows how to people. No, that's not a typo. We came for Dine LA, but quickly learned that nearly every dish in the pre-fixe had shellfish. The husband is allergic (rude, right?) and we were also told that if one person gets the pre-fixe, the whole table must get the pre-fixe, with no option to combine with the regular menu. We opted for a la carte per Frederic's suggestion, really bummed that we wouldn't be able to try the tasting menu dessert. We started off with the usual order of hamachi shots and a half dozen oysters. Last time we were here the shots were so insanely salty, it almost put me off of coming back again, but they're my husbands favorite so we gave it another chance and I am glad we did because they were fantastic. Sorry, that was a really long sentence. We also got a salad, this was Harry's Berries, which was an endive salad with strawberries, triple crème savarin cheese, and pistachio drizzled with honey. The endives made for crunchy edible spoons for the fruit and cheese. No meal at Alexander's would be complete without their bread and butter service--always impeccable with their squid ink bread, cheese rolls, and milk buns accompanied with their assorted butters. Frederic asked me which was my favorite and gave me extra to take home with me and I am not lying when I say I will remember this gesture for the rest of my life. I'm a simple woman: you give me good bread and you will have a place in my heart. Entrees. I got the 3oz Miyazaki wagyu, medium rare, with a side of bone marrow. I've tried every cut they offer and find that although this is the least expensive, it's consistently the best. It's just rich enough. It was just lightly seasoned, so I was able to dip into the array of tasting salts they offer. As for the marrow, the bone was brimming with the stuff. You know how sometimes you get a yuge bone only for there to be little to no marrow? Well Alexander's has never done us like that, but this was an insane amount of marrow through and through, like I almost considered asking for a larger spoon because I was having trouble scooping it all out. My husband got the katsu with curry sauce (included) and garlic chimichurri (additional side). I know, I know. Katsu from a steakhouse?! We've tried literally everything else on the menu. Also, don't knock it because not all fried foods are fried equal. The breading was fantastic and the the pork was juicy. The curry sauce was rich in flavor and spicy, which the chimichurri was bright and zesty. If the katsu looks huge in the photo, that's because it is. That thing was the size of my iPad Pro. Of course we had to get desserts. I opted for the coconut panna cotta and the spouse got the red wine poached pear. Imagine our surprise when a third dessert found its way to the table--the tasting menu dessert! I started to turn it away, thinking it was a mistake, when Frederic confirmed it was indeed for us. In short, my summer body is not coming along well (read: at all) but Alexander's has returned to what it used to be: a remarkable dining experience with service to match. Top three rudest hostess I've ever met (and I'm over 50). I had a 5:45 reservation. I called to apologize and inform the restaurant that I was running just under 15 min late and was that OK. Hostess was quiet, and then as if I had violated a rule of etiquette, in the most disengaged voice said, "so...6:00 PM." I said yes, is that OK? She said, OK and hung up. Literally, no thank you for calling. No "no worries; we'll see you when you get here." Only complete rudeness. Walked in before 6:00. Hostess was leaned over front desk. Terrible posture. Walked us into a very empty dining room and offered us one of the least romantic tables you will find. When my wife asked if it would be OK if we had a different table (more romantic and one with better back support), things got even worse. She sighed in disgust out loud, and said something to the effect of, "whatever". Comment was followed my, "now I'm going to have to change the server." Are you kidding me?! We were seated at the table we wanted and were a half second away from leaving when the maitre d came over and inquired how things were. I explained what occurred. He apologized profusely, sat us at a romantic table and was our server for the evening. His service was outstanding. We had cavier, a bottle of Bordeaux, multiple appetizers, an Australian ribeye, and a couple of sides. With tip I spent just under a $1K. My husband & I had a belated Valentine's dinner here on 02/15/24. I booked a resy via open table with no trouble at all. When entering I was already impressed with the vibrant atmosphere especially how they decorated for Valentine's day. It's sophisticated, but very dim inside. It's quite romantic, classy with an upscale feel. We did dress up for this. What we ordered Hamachi Shot 10/10 Caesar Salad (crunchy small portion 8/10) Chilled Oysters (10/10, refreshing Royal Miyagi) Bone in Ribeye; West holme F1 Australian Wagyu 28 oz (10/10 so much flavor, so tender, & you know we gotta get it MEDIUM RARE, PHENOMENAL) Lobster tail: (8.5/10 it was delicious, but the portion was quite small we weren't expecting it to be that tiny, we probably won't order it again) Fried Rice (A little dry it was ok 7.5/10) Mac & Cheese (we love cheese so we were a bit disappointed in this 5/10) Brussel Sprouts (8.5/10 flavorful, crunch. It had chorizo in it which was quite different than your basic Vinaigrette brussel sprouts) Molten Chocolate Lava Cake (it wasn't a lava, but I may have dipped my spoon too far from the middle perhaps, 8.5/10) Espresso (a single shot, woke me up 10/10) Cotton Candy (we had two, 1 at our table, 1 to go) His Drink: Old fashion x2 Her Drink: Too Excited to Siesta x2 Our overall experience was great! Our waiter was very attentive, explaining the entire menu to us as it was our first time. There was nothing for us to complain about as our server delivered exceptional service and was polite the entire time! We had quite a bit of leftovers and he also offered to pack it for us too! Side note: the reason why we had so many leftovers is because we kept asking for more bread BECAUSE LET ME TELL YOU THEY HAD THIS BONE MARROW BUTTER THAT WAS AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS!!! 10/10 . Anyone know if they sell it asking for a friend lol. Though this was quite the dent in our wallet we both agreed it was worth every penny spent. We will be back!
