I brought my husband here to dine in for lunch. He ordered a double cheeseburger. Almost half way through his burger all of a sudden there was a very loud crunch sound. It was as if he was chewing on rocks. He spit it out & it appeared to be nasty old dirty gristle. My husband could have broken his teeth that's how hard it was. NEVER AGAIN!!! read more

I was looking forward to my meal here based on the reviews for the gyro. For those that think this is the best they've had, I would say they need to get out a little further than Mchenry. This gyro was good, not great. The tzatziki.sauce wa lbs fair. It may have be homemade but failed on comparison to a place in libertyville and also one in Lake Zurich just to name a few that are not too far away. The fries were the skinny fries and were hot along with the rest of the plate. The pita was fresh and hot. My Dr.Pepper was calibrated well and overall I'm happy with the meal, but let's keep this in perspective. I would come back for this or to try something different. read more

Always had great food , could do without the owner being as rude as he always is. The place is filthy , the light bulbs are burnt out half the menu is missing letters up on the wall Biggest issue is the vulgar music that was playing that he was singing along with. Because of the food being made fresh you have no choice to either listen and try to ignore or walk out. Very good inexpensive food. The service was great, the guy was extremely educated about his job and extremely honest. The ambiance of the restaurant was very classic and calm and there was nice music with a view of IL 120. During my order the guy accidentally clicked 2 Italian beefs and before giving the food he simple apologized and gave the money back for the extra sandwich. Very respectful. read more

My food the first time I went in. Ordered a burger I get a bun w some tomatoes and pickles. I call. He says come back in you want a new one. Well duh. Or a credit. No a new one. I go back in get home and I get a burnt hockey puck of a burger. Just disgusting. Don't eat here. You don't serve a customer food that looks like that. I'm working off memories here as I haven't been to this place in quite a few years. When I lived not too far away we used to go here almost weekly. It was conveniently located on our way out of town heading towards Chicago. The service was always friendly and the food was always excellent. The gentleman who runs the place, who was almost always behind the counter, looked a little gruff but was very friendly and personable and made some very good conversation. For me this was a great place to go for a Chicago style hot dog or really good Italian beef with hot giardiniera. Their french fries were still tasty as opposed to most fast food places these days. For me this is probably the best Chicago style Italian beef stand in the area. read more

There's just something about this place that reminds me of a quick, greasy, delicious place in New York City. Their food is great, but they almost have an "I-don't-give-a-crap" attitude: the store hasn't been updated since what looks like the '70s and the staff are never friendly (never rude, but they don't sweet talk you). I would probably hate these attributes in a lot of restaurants, but here, I think it really works for them. My favorite thing to get is the gyro plate: two pitas, lots of meat, tomatoes, onions and cilantro, and tzatziki sauce, plus a small fry for just $7. Most of their prices are reasonable. Some things on the menu are surprisingly expensive, but you can definitely get out of there for under $10 a person. They have tables inside, they have tables outside, and they take MasterCard and Visa. We usually get our stuff to go. You can order when you get there and be out in about five minutes, but if you're really in a rush you can call ahead. They deliver too! read more

This place is an institution for sure!! If you gave it a bad review, you just don't get it.. It's been here forever, sure I may be biased because I have been coming here since I was in high school (that's a solid 15 years!) but you can't beat the gyro! And the "mean' guy behind the counter is just not all fake friendly, so what!? He is the real deal greek, and it's really a little entertaining frankly. Back in the day my mom struck up a convo with him to find that his home base was the south side of Chi and they drove all that way for this family restaurant. I support this local business 100% and I'm not mad at all about the shabby unchanged interior, part of the '94 charm ;) P.s-you must get the cheese fries!!! read more

The food is pretty good. You're not going to find homemade giardenira anywhere else in town and I enjoy it on my beef. The gyros are good too, as well as the pizza puffs and mozzarella sticks. Not much else great to say about the place. I used to love it, but upon my most recent trip today, really noticed how the owner has let the place run into the ground and the cheapness shows through the people (lack-thereof) at that, that work the front. Always some pissy sassy toned cashier for as long as I remember. Makes me think of all the crap they must go through. The building really needs work. Not sure if I even really want to go back seeing the yellow (used to be white) walls and leaking AC system over the fountain machines. I know this place doesn't get good food safety scores, which makes me feel even crappier for giving them three stars, but hey, nostalgia, right? read more

After living in McHenry for the past 6 years, my mom and I FINALLY stopped in to Alex's a few Fridays ago after an evening of conquering our to-do shopping list. We arrived around 8pm, so about an hour before they closed, and ordered two quarter-pound cheeseburgers and cheese fries. The girls behind the counter were very friendly and funny, which was a good start. We did wait a good 20 or so minutes for our order, but that tells me it was made fresh, and I'll certainly wait for made-to-order food. The burgers were tasty and received compliments from my mom, who prefers McDonald's Quarter Pounders to almost anything else. She also loved that the fries were "skinny" - her favorite. During our wait, we were checking out the menu. They have daily specials that seem to be phenomenal deals, so we'll be back to check them out! In all it was a pretty solid experience of good CHEAP food. read more

By far the worst food in McHenry - every time we drive by and see people there we wonder how many will get sick.
