My friend, her daughter and I have been going to Alicia's on Kuykendahl for a long time now. Last night was the last time! We won't be returning. I don't know whether our waiter was having a bad day, but after speaking to the manager who didn't apologize or seem to care, I won't be going back. We had to ask our busboy who our waiter was and when he went over to tell our waiter we were ready to order, our waiter apparently took offense. He managed to make it to our table (not immediately) and take our order in a very brusque manner. When he brought our food, he didn't ask whether we needed anything nor did he ever come back to our table to see how we were doing. Our busboy had basically cleared our table and we were sitting there with our to-go boxes and our credit cards out.........still no waiter or tickets. He walked by our table several times while we sat there. We finally got up and went to the front desk where NO ONE was. My friend tracked down another waiter and asked for the manager. That person went to the manager who saw us standing by the front desk and proceeded to go to the kitchen and on through to the other side. He finally came to us and was listening to our complaints when the waiter showed up and asked whether we were separate or together. The manager did not request that the waiter apologize or anything. For those who think Alicia's is the bomb, hats off to you. I hope you never encounter this type of treatment there. Honestly I had really high expectations for this restaurant. The salsa is delicious but the queso is actually repulsive to me, it's nothing but processed cheese. I had the chimichanga and it was okay it wasn't the standard long and skinny chimichanga I was expecting it was short and fat. It fell apart very easily and lacked in flavor. I ordered a strawberry frozen margarita and I didn't know it was actually possible to screw that up. The drink was 95% tequila and 5% strawberry mix I couldn't even drink it. Also this family sitting behind us were letting their child run wild through out the restaurant without any shoes on and that alone made me lose my appetite. read more

My wife and I decided to drive over and give this place a try....so glad we did! My wife had the best Skinny Margarita EVER, her words not mine. Along with the margarita she had Fish Tacos (served with cilantro rice and black beans). The fish tacos were very good. The taco had a large flavorful fish filet. The black beans had a good, and unique, flavor. The rice, was very good and complimented the entrée nicely. I had a frozen margarita, it was okay. Next trip, I'll go for the top self and hope for a better flavor. I had the beef enchiladas (with rich and beans). The chili gravy was excellent! Overall, great place! We were there after the normal lunch hour and it was not crowded. The service was great. Very timely on refills for water, salsa and chips. All the food was made with fresh ingredients! Very tasty. The only downsides to the visit were two: The salsa was cold. That was easily remedied when we asked the staff to warm it. It was VERY good warmed up. My margarita, was okay. Certainly not bad, but compared to my wife's and the food, a bit of a disappointment. We eat Mexican food and have margaritas EVERY Friday. We will include Alicia's into the rotation of Gringos, Pappasito's, and others. read more

This used to be our favorite place, but something has happened to cause this place to go downhill over the past year. The food used to be fantastic, but is now mediocre. The last time our service wasn't all that great, and the place wasn't even busy. We are now in search of a new favorite Mexican restaurant. They still have the best salsa around with is why we keep going back and hoping everything else will improve to the way it was. read more

Looking for a good Mexican restaurant in the area and ran into this one. Their nachos taste way better than they looked which was a good thing. If you check this place out, you must try their Carnitas platter. They were cooked perfectly and their juices were so flavorful. I probably spend 2-3k a month eating out. I had a friend tell me at Alicias today that he had been going to Uncle Julios instead of Alicias lately. So, I took my wife over to Uncle Julios for National Margarita Day. Drinks are in small glasses.... This place has is like Taco Bell portions of Pappasitos quality food at the same price. Frankly, Alicias Mexican food is so much better for the price. Example, the Cerviche at Alicias is 5 times the portion at Uncle Julios. Drinks are expensive as well....just like Pappasitos. Since I have moved from New York to Texas I've been dying to try really good mexican food. My wife took me to this restaurant but be warned about the female who greets and sits you down. She has been really rude to me and my wife several times we've gone to this place from giving dirty looks to throwing the menus at the booth me and my wife and kids would always sit. Basically just plain rude service from her. Last time we were there was for father's day and that was the last straw. My wife went in first because our daughter had to go to the bathroom, couple of minutes later I come in with my son and she doesn't even greet us at all. All she did was turn around and give her back to us... My wife comes back and asks me you haven't been seated? I said no we haven't so we sit down on the benches that were next to the greeter. We sat for about 5 minutes and she sits down a couple that came after us... Immediately my wife walked out the restaurant but i didn't go without making a huge complaint on how she has treated us each time we have eaten at this establishment. Oh but the worst thing of all yet funny to me was that she swears she's never saw us before in the restaurant. Clearly she had no idea what she was talking about when she sat us down on 4 occasion in the exact same booth!!! Me and my wife will never come back to this establishment ever.... Food is great but what matters to me more importantly is the service that is given makes me want to come back but in this case never again!!!! read more

The charro beans here are phenom! Service is fast and pleasant. Lunch food brought to table only 7 mins after ordering, and lunch crowd already in....Chips/salsa very good and replaced quickly. We decided to try Alicia's after hearing so many good things about it. What a disappointment! From start to finish....the red salsa was so watery and bland. Next came the drinks...my kids ordered pink lemonade which was so watered down they didn't want to drink it. We ordered the top shelf margaritas - and were horrified at what they consider to be a top shelf drink. The tequila was horrible - making the whole drink awful - had to send back for something different. Nothing that had to be made by the bartender. Food ordered was beef fajitas, cheese enchiladas, blackened tilapia, and fish tacos. My fish tacos were so bland and unflavorful. My husband hated his tilapia - again, stating that it had no flavor. Boys thought their meals were just ok - but have had better. We definitely won't be back and cannot recommend. read more

We visited the location in Spring. I got food poisoning. Went in feeling great all day, left feeling nauseous and went steady downhill after that. Food came out immediately after we ordered which kinda made me scared. No way was our plates prepared to order. Food quality was comparable to fast food. This was my first time to go there. I ordered a mixed meat fajita, and the served me the beef fajita (it is more expensive). The food was so salty and I was afraid it will get my blood pressure shooting sky high. When I paid with Restaurant.com gift certificate, the waiter without looking at the coupon, said that we need to buy two drinks and which was not listed as one condition on the coupon. I argued and he adjusted the bill, with 18% service charge included in the bill which was not listed as one condition on the coupon. We had to argued again. Finally, we got the corrected bill, but he was so busy and not to take care of the charge card payment for us. We had to wait extra long time to pay for it. I would not go there again and I felt that they just like to overcharge customer. read more

Eaten at Alicia's 117 times in the past 3 years according to my Amex records, but now we stopped eating there two months ago. We cannot hear our conversation at a square four-top table. Terribly noisy! We have provided feedback for 1+ years as it can be an easy fix. El Chapparo is at Gosling and Kuykendahl, less than a mile away and we enjoy it far more...great food and a more enjoyable dining experience. read more

So we had come here a few years ago for a family birthday and there was a seafood medley dish that looked amazing that hubby and I didn't order. Finally were on this side of town again and stopped in to find the menu had changed and that dish wasn't available. Margaritas were $9.50 ea. They were good but pricey for a house drink. Then we ordered ceviche as an appetizer and the Snapper Alicia to share for the main. They brought them out together. Disappointed at that. The ceviche was quite sour. The main was super flavorful but cold due to the timing of service. My husband's comment was that it's apparent they are anxious to close up, they brought us both at the same time! So 3 stars. Not over the moon, definitely NOT likely to go out of our way to come back. read more

I have been to Alicia's several times. The area of town it is in is filled with strip malls and ubiquitous Mexican joints, so it's nice to have a free-standing option close-by without patrolling 1-45. It is one of the nicer Mexican restaurants in the area. Furthermore they have quite an extensive list of seafood options to satisfy fish lovers. Recently I ordered the fried calamari as an appetizer. It was a good mix of the tentacles and the circles, both nice and crispy but not greasy. They came with an addictive cilantro-lemon-white wine sauce that was very mild and liquidy and begged to be sopped up with the tentacles. I ordered the Snapper Aliana for dinner and my companion ordered the Crab Enchiladas. He enjoyed the enchiladas, but he is from Rhode Island, so he sniffed disparagingly over the crab, saying that although it was lump crab he could tell it wasn't freshly prepared on premises. I thought that was a little highfalutin for these parts, but I know Rhode Island seafood can ruin you, so I just nodded. This was a heavy, creamy dish- not something I would ever order on my own and a real gut-bomb if you are watching your figure. Which I am. The restaurant serves the snapper in a variety of ways, and the Snapper Aliana is a decadent dish worthy of any seafood restaurant. Served on a bed of spinach and covered with seafood, mushrooms and artichokes in lemon-butter, it was moist and flaky and generous enough to have left-overs the next day. I was a little perplexed at the variety on their menu- besides an extensive Tex-Mex menu, they serve tenderloin in a pepper-cognac sauce, steak and mushrooms, even baby back ribs in a barbeque chipotle sauce, not to mention all of the seafood and chicken that are covered in Italian-style lemon-butter sauces. According to the website, the Herrera family is branching out into Italian food, steak and even a bakery. It made sense after reading this- Alicia's must have been their testing ground for trying the things they wanted to pursue. I appreciate their industry, dedication and inventiveness and look forward to trying some of their other restaurants soon. read more

The food was fine. The service here is a mess. We had leftover soup and asked for a to go container. The gentleman brought us a to go cup for a drink. We let him know that it was for soup, not a drink. Rather than admit his mistake, he doubled down and told us the cup was for soup. If that was true, its kind of weird. This was our first time trying this restaurant, and it will definitely be our LAST! I've never had such an odd/terrible experience with food before. We started off with queso(which was the ONLY good thing this restaurant has to offer). I ordered the mushroom enchilada platter that also comes with a crispy taco on the side. Not only was my food not even considered lukewarm but my crispy taco completely fell apart upon picking it up because it was soooo soggy by the time we got our food. I don't know how long it had already been out before we actually got our food because the temperature and textures was just disgusting. My husband ordered chicken fajitas and his chicken was served undercooked and PINK!!! Everything we ordered was completely bland, zero flavor, just gross. Chicken fajitas were practically raw, food cold, taco soggy. I wouldn't come back here if someone paid me to, Ive rather starve! Guys, please stay away from here!!!! read more

I love the caldo de pollo. It's so hard to find a restaurant with good soup. I'm also a fan of the fajitas. Good chips and salsa. Ask for both the red and green sauce. They're both delicious. The service is quick and friendly. The free ice cream cone was a nice treat. read more

Came here based on several recommendations, and I have come back twice since my first visit in a matter of a month since I happened to be in the area. First time I had the crab enchiladas, and they were amazing. Very light and full of crab. Second time I went with the lobster enchiladas, and they were equally as delicious. My daughter tried the chicken tortilla soup, which was a bit spicy but so tasty. Kids quesadillas and kids taco were also very good. The third time I had the crab enchiladas, they were extra cheesy and creamy...which would have been good but I was trying to eat lighter (I expected them to be consistent with first time, but I probably should have gone with the salad anyhow but the crab is so good). Warning...the vegetables are very buttery. The black beans have a certain spice to them as well as the green sauce for chips you can get upon request...can't quite put my finger on it. Good, but different. The frozen margaritas are strong and delicious...and a great price at $5 or $7 depending on size. Love this place! I can't wait to go back and try some of the dinner meals like scallops and steak entrees. read more
