I obtained bids from 2 large pest control companies (that would only kill the bees but not remove the hive) and several smaller companies that offered live bee and hive removal but their bids, as might be expected, were higher. I contacted them over Yelp about an issue I was having with some wasps nests on my eaves. Mike got back to me within 10 minutes. We talked and after he finished up his other job came to my house. He told me that what I had was a paper wasp nest and the other one was a sand dub (or something like that). He said that he'd be happy to take them down for the $165 he quoted but that they were both very docile and actually beneficial - both eat spiders and white flies - which have actually been bothering my garden as of late. I called on Monday morning. Mike picked up (while on another client's roof!), and came by our house for an estimate within 90 minutes. He provided an estimate over the phone and came back an hour or so later with the right supplies. The extraction was difficult, 20+ feet up in a box under the eves of our house. I called a competitor to get a second opinion (even though my own independent research showed that waiting a few days was probably the best course of action) and they wanted to send someone over ASAP to provide a quote (and my experience in sales tells me that getting someone on site means they want a sale) even though the swarm was not near the house and was not aggressive (though it was growing). I haven't actually used their services because they were so incredibly honest when I called them that they gave me free advice instead of charging me for a service call. Long story short, we had a swarm of bees set up temporary camp in our apple pear tree one day. The swarm was pretty large and we thought we'd need a professional bee removal service to relocate them. The best! Bottom line: learn from my experience and just call Aliza's/Mike first! A++ Long answer: For a few days in a row I was finding live bees inside my house in one particular area. I finally discovered a swarm around the top of my chimney and could see some crawling in and out. I knew I needed to move quickly before the hive they were building got any bigger. I started calling both live bee removal and exterminators. Extermination is the cheaper option no doubt, but then the world loses valuable pollinators AND I'd still have a hive (and honey!) stuck in my chimney! Preferring live removal, I called several who were highly recommended on yelp and found a bunch of crunchy beekeeper types who love bees, but don't seem to have the business mindset to actually help a homeowner. To give some examples of those I called before I found Mike: 2 don't do chimneys; 1 guy never showed up for estimate/work (he called me later that evening apologized for missing our appt and suggested I run the fireplace to scare the bees away. Don't do this! Mike explained later that the beeswax/honey could have melted and fallen deeper into my chimney!); 1 guy was booked out for several days; 2 took over a day to return my call; all above said they couldn't seal up my chimney so I'd need to find a separate contractor after they removed my bees. I finally called Aliza's/Mike after finding him on yelp. To my surprise Mike answered the phone himself, said he could be over in 45 minutes, and explained he had a background in construction so he could seal up the chimney. He arrived, assessed the situation, gave me a price (negotiable), and said he could start the work right away! His price was a little higher than the other verbal quotes I had received, but hey "beekeeper in the yard is worth two in the office." He set to work, trapped the bees, pulled out 4 honeycombs, sealed up the chimney top, and guaranteed the bees wouldn't return for 6 months. On top of that, he took photos of the hive, gave me a piece of bee-less honeycomb which my kids found fascinating, AND gave me a bottle of his honey. He's funny, quick, and professional.
