Dr. Sarnelli was the most amazing person I could ever have imagined, and it was very special the way she gave Bailey and her loved ones such peace during this difficult experience.  She had such empathy and kindness towards Bailey and all her humans.  She is truly a gift to everyone in their time of greatest need. When Dr. Sarnelli arrived, we were all outside in the back yard giving Bailey one last chance to sniff and bask in the warm sun. We all went back inside and chatted for ten minutes about what to expect.  I already had a plan for how I wanted to send Bailey on her way so I sat in my recliner, put a blanket over me, and then Bailey's Grandpa gently laid her on my lap.  Dr. Sarnelli brought some beef jerky treats and explained that sometime dogs wanted the treats while others didn't, but we'd see how that went.  Well, these must have been some very special treats because while Bailey hadn't had any interest in food for three days, she scarfed this jerky down, and for a brief moment we all commented that her face lit up again, and she looked like the Bailey we all knew and loved for so many years.  Despite that, we knew that this euphoria she was feeling was certainly generated by the love she was surrounded by, and that we needed to continue with the plan to ease her pain.  It was such an amazing way to spend her last hour.  While I continued to feed Bailey the treats, I checked with everyone, and nodded to Dr. Sarnelli to indicate we were ready to say "nigh-nighs" to Bailey one last time.  That's what we've always said whenever we've gone to bed, "Bailey you wanna go nigh-nighs?" (Said in a tone as if talking to a small child).  Besides going to the dog park every day, I'm pretty sure "nigh-nighs" was Bailey's favorite part of the day.  As Bailey was scarfing the beef jerky, she probably had 5 or 6 servings, Dr. Sarnelli gave her a shot of sedative in her neck.  Bailey didn't even feel it.  After about a minute, Bailey stopped eating the jerky, and just looked at me for about 5 minutes as I spoke to her and told her how much I loved her, and then she closed her eyes and fell asleep peacefully in my lap.  She snored in my lap for about half an hour while the Dr. Sarnelli tried to find a vein to insert an IV. Dr. Sarnelli was so compassionate as she searched for a vein and even said she wanted to avoid Bailey's "bad leg" as it had been afflicted with cancer and she didn't want to inflict any more "pain" on Bailey's sore leg, despite the fact that Bailey was fast asleep. Once a good IV had been inserted, I said, "Nigh-nighs Bailey," one last time, and Bailey crossed the rainbow bridge into doggie heaven.   It was a beautiful ceremony, and I can't imagine Bailey going out in a more loving and comfortable way.  Bailey was blissfully unaware of what was happening except that she was being smothered with treats and love from all her favorite people.   If your situation allows you the time to schedule Dr. Sarnelli or anyone else from All About Restful Pets to come to your home to send your loved ones across the rainbow bridge to doggie heaven, you will never regret that choice. The idea that Bailey's last moments on earth would be at her vets office made me ill thinking about it as she was terrified of the vet's office. Sadly the time came to put my companion Mya of 15 years down. Mya would get nervous in the car and at the vet, I did not want her last memories to be nervous ones. After speaking with friends I found out I could have Mya comfortably put down at home. I called All About Restful Pets and spoke with a very kind informative person. They guided me online where I selected the day, arrival time, ordered paw prints and paid. Dr. Gina Sarnelli came later that evening. We went outside into the backyard where Mya enjoyed laying in the sun. Dr. Gina explained the process while petting Mya and giving her doggy treats. During this time she asked if she could give Mya an injection that would make her comfortable and fall asleep. We agreed this was a good time. After the injection we all pet Mya while saying our goodbyes. When the time came, Dr. Gina inserted an iv type needle and then peacefully laid Mya to rest. After Mya was at peace, Dr. Gina took impressions of Mya's paws for us and let us trim some of her hair for our memory book. When we were all done loving on Mya despite her no longer being with us, she was wrapped very carefully and lovingly in a soft fuzzy blanket with her little paws and face poking out. We carried Mya to Dr. Gina's car and placed her on the front seat for her final ride. This experience went much better than I anticipated for such a sad situation. She ensured everyone was on the same page, we understood the process and that our loving family member was comforted and comfortable from beginning until they were at peace.
