A friend of Lisa recommended this sandwich shop to us so of course we were excited to find out there was a Rome location. It's legendary so there was a line but the gentleman playing music in the square made the time pass by enjoyable. Once in the shop you could see how fast the staff were moving from taking orders to checking customers out so best to have an idea of what you want as to not hold up the pace. This is one of the lunch spots that was highly recommended prior to my trip to Rome. I heard that the lines were long, but they had 3-4 counters open so the lines moved quickly. The line moves quick though as they have tons of employees and after you order, you pay at a different counter before picking up the sandwich. They do have some seating inside but most people just take it and eat outside on the curb or while walking around. The menu didn't have any English so I was frantically translating everything online on their website to decide what to order. The sandwich was pretty good but not the best I had my week in Rome. The line here is way shorter than in Florence for sure. Probably only 10 people in line and it went quickly. My companion ordered the most popular sandwich which is the pistachio mortadella. He really thought it was very tasty and ate it up quickly. I ordered an eggplant with salami with some type of cream because the lady staff member told me that this was the best sandwich at the place. She was severely wrong. Maybe it's because her English wasn't too good. It just wasn't to my liking. Seating is extremely limited there on the edges of the restaurant. The line was very long when we got here, and we waited outside for about twenty minutes, half way down the block from the entry to the shop. I anticipated so much, and after hearing about it on Youtube, apparently my husband and I weren't the only ones to hear about this place, but there you have it. The sandwiches are enormously large, like U.S. extra large. I can't think of a sandwich that I've had that was just as large. This is an in-out venture and if you feel comfortable asking people what they think of the sandwich or what it tastes like, I would ask. The only reason I'm saying this is because you will honestly have to be careful what you order. I was too adventurous in trying a sandwich here, and I wish I'd been a bit more careful because there aren't any take backs. Too bad no samples are handed out front. All I must say is try not to order anything with the truffle sauce because it's gray and it tastes like Gorgonzola cheese sauce, and if you haven't had that then think "blue cheese," which is a bit tart. What I ordered was the "San Marco," and I wasn't prepared for the taste and frankly wasn't in the mood for ham with tomato and sauce that tasted like this. I truly thought "truffle" will taste like mushrooms and maybe it would be good. My husband chose better as he went with the "Truffle 1" which was truffle mortadella, stracchino, mushroom cream, and arugula. His sandwich didn't have the gray stuff. Also, once I was in the states I wanted to look at their menu again, and didn't realize that I was looking at one in N.Y. and lo and behold I find out they are a chain, and have several shops in N.Y. I thought I would not be able to finish a whole sandwich myself but it was so good that I did! The bread was crispy with every bite. We were in and out in five minutes with our sandwiches during a lunch rush, and it ended up being one of the best calls of the trip. The sandwich was massive, seriously the size of your head, but so good you won't want to stop eating it. I was starving and totally forgot to take a picture, which says a lot. Service was convenient, they had two men navigating the long lines which was helpful. They forget to add my arugula, but my sandwich ("toscana") was delicious nonetheless. Their onion cream was sweet and a good addition, but I would opt for something like their truffle cream if you want a stronger flavor. I don't know if it was because I was African-American or what but he had a real poor attitude and worst service. A complete train wreck needs to be retrained.
