Cafe Allegro in La Verne & Upland are by far the best Italian restaurants in the IE. Discovered the Sam Dimas location back in 2003. The Upland location about 12 years ago. Both have great food, excellent wine selection & great complimentary bread. But the La Verne location is smaller, more personal. You can watch them cook from the window on the sidewalk. Both locations have outdoor seating. My favorite dish is the penne explosive. Earthquake & Seven Deadly Zins are your best choices for Red wine. read more

I didn't expect to change my review within 10 days. Today I felt discriminated against! I went to make a reservation two days ago for Valentines weekend when I was told that they do not take reservations and to check in the day of. I went down for dinner tonight as I was told to do and found out they were completely booked because they took reservations after I was told they did not! Why did they not want to give me a reservation? This is poor management! Do not pick and choose who you are going to serve. Management should make it a point to take reservations regularly or not. This is ABSURD! I cannot believe that they would do this to us! Going from such a positive experience to such a negative experience wasn't expected. I am a huge Italian food fan and this place is my local favorite. My husband and I frequently come here for Friday date night and the chicken Parmesan is so yummy!!! . They give you such a generous portion somI get to enjoy half at the restaurant and 1/2'the next day for lunch as I like to save room for dessert; I love the garlic green beans too, so tasty. I think they have a really great tiramisu. My husband doesn't like coffee so when he feels like something sweet we will get their cheesecake which I think is good too. It's been a long time since I popped in to eat here. The birthday girl asked for good pizza and pasta so this was our 1st thought. The calamari was so crisp and thick, so tasty. They charge for bread service now but hey blame inflation. The customer service was on point, we were checked on and water refilled regularly through out the meal. This is my second time coming here. They hosted my small wedding dinner here of 13 people. Its very nice inside. We all ordered different pastas and everyone loved it! We did have a reservation and there was a little bit of a wait to seat us but understandable with a party so big. I brought a cake and they helped slice it and provided cutlery to do so. Honestly this is some of the worst "authentic" Italian food I've ever had. The antipasto misto is literally embarrassing. I'm paying 25 dollars for olives, prosciutto and arancini rice balls that taste like they're freezer burned. Extremely overpriced. Mushroom ravioli was decent though. I can't remember the name of our waitress but she was paying more attention to the people sitting next to us because I'm assuming she knew them, to the point that it was delaying our service. If I'm paying way too much for terrible Italian food, please at least make the service good. We were basically ignored the whole time. The hostess eventually came and took the check and my card from our WAITRESS because she was literally too busy talking to the people next to us. She was holding my card for almost 10 minutes!! basically in front of me, after we've finished our meal. Literally unacceptable, but thank you to the hostess. I enjoyed the ambiance and the area it's located in is beautiful. Although I will admit I was a little disappointed with the food, idk who or why the food was just not as authentic as I had imagined. The chicken taste like it was frozen pre cut and in those weird chunks and the pesto doesn't have a great flavor it just taste like basil that came out of the food processor. The charcuterie board literally comes with a forest of micro greens that make no sense and in this forest is a few pickles with grapes and walnuts, which was almost like a salad. Just put in on a board and let the quality do the talking. The bread also threw me off as some of it had spinach kneaded into it. I asked if they can make cacio e pepe which is like 4 ingredients and brought me something that would insult an Italian grandmother. Their Moscato is just as sugary as kool-aid and the bootle was just way too sweet to drink. Look this place is popular and I'm not saying don't try it.. My husband and I wanted to have a little date night in so I ordered our food to go. Everything was going well -- our entrees were amazing. Then we moved onto dessert. I inserted my fork into the chocolate mousse cake, pulled it out and was met with a blue fabric of some sort (see photos). And it didn't look like it kind of fell on top of the cake, it looked as if it were baked into it. You cannot go wrong with any dish at this hidden gem in downtown Upland. It's the greatest spot for date night or for groups. The food is fresh and authentic and the experience is top notch. Service is phenomenal and this restaurant will always have a soft spot in my heart. They GENEROUSLY donated a bottle of wine and $50 gift card to a charity event I hosted back in 2011. This place needs new management ASAP. Most unprofessional experience we've ever had with their manager Courtney. My wife and her friends got there on a Monday afternoon for some girl time. As women sometimes do, they spent many hours catching up. I joined them later for dinner. Keep in mind we are all 50+ year old professionals. We eat out all the time in finer places than this. The ladies did drink a lot of sangrias but were fine since it was over many hours. The BS started when our family friend, who happened to also be there dining, came over and quietly informed us that she tried to buy us a round and was told "no, they are cut off." First, no one once told us we were cut off. In fact, I bought another round AFTER our friend told us this. Second, what kind of manager tells other patrons that someone else is cut off? Thirdly, if we were cut off, why didn't they warn us of what we were doing wrong? Our table was never warned of anything. No "keep it down" no "you've been here too long" no "you've drank too much." Nothing. We had zero idea Courtney had a problem with us. If she had acted like a normal professional manager, she would have told us if we had done something wrong. But she never did. Their staff (Kat and Garrett) were super friendly and talking to us throughout their shift, and bringing us drinks and food whenever we wanted. So, again, if we were "cut off" why did their staff not know, but our family friend did know? Of course we're not going to put up with this treatment. My wife asked Kat to ask the manager to come speak to us, but the manager REFUSED. So we went to the bar to talk to her and find out what the problem was, and why she's telling other patrons we're cut off, while they also keep serving us (sounds contradictory to me). Courtney just stood there acting extremely dismissive and wouldn't explain anything. She said she can do whatever she wants. Within 30 seconds she was saying "I'm going to call the cops!" We were dumbfounded by her attitude. No one threatened her. I'm a former district attorney by the way so I'm not stupid. That's when I decided it's not worth getting an explanation and started gathering our group to leave. My adult step-daughter asked Courtney one more time, what did we do wrong? That's when Courtney started screaming at the top of her lungs "86! 86!" We found out later this means she was kicking us out and banning us forever. It was the most bizarre and humiliating experience we've ever had. We have never been treated by anyone the way Courtney treated us that day. While this was going on, our friend was asking all the tables around us if we were too loud or did anything wrong, and they all said no. One of us also spoke to Robert the owner a couple of days later, and found out Courtney had made up all kinds of lies and got her staff to lie as well (probably because they don't want to be fired). The lies included that our group stood on top of the bar and were screaming, and throwing food inside the restaurant, and it hit a staff member. But none of that ever happened. How laughable. We're too old to even climb up on a bar to begin with and would never throw food inside a restaurant. Robert's reply was "Wow, I'm hearing 2 different stories." We said look at the cameras, but they also made some excuse about them not catching anything that day. Likely story. Bottom line, this should have never happened. If someone is in fact a problem, you let them know to calm down or get out. But we were not a problem, other than I don't think Courtney liked that her staff was taking a lot of time to shoot the breeze with us. But that's not our fault or problem. She clearly had a personal problem with one or more of us, but either way she does not belong in that capacity as a manager. She escalated the situation instead of de-escalating, and as a lawyer, I can tell you that is a huge liability for a business. read more
