My $500 loafers started to fall apart in 4 or 5 wears in a month. Worse was the response from the sales guys in the store who told me to come back another time, when I could drop the shoes off so they can be sent for repair. I fully expected they would simply replace the shoe as any higher end retailer would. Not sure why I should be required to drive downtown and pay for parking 2 more times b/c of their defective product. Been here with my husband a handful of times with amazing customer service, except for this most recent experience. There were two front employees, one with another customer and one without. The one without acknowledged us when we walked in, but when my husband inquired about their belt selection (to replace an AE one that was stolen), the guy was not helpful at all and responded with one word or snarky responses. It was really condescending and made us both uncomfortable with the entire encounter. His demeanor screamed he did not want to be at his place of employment which is his problem, but no need to treat us like sh!t. I've worked in retail in the past and his dgaf and rude demeanor was such a turnoff that I wished we just left the store right away. Save your time and energy; don't even bother coming to this store because you'll be in a sour mood hella quick. Why drop hella $$$ when you're gonna be treated less than by the salesman? One of the lessons I've had to learn along the way is to try dress shoes in store before buying even if online deals are tempting. My feet recently grew and I needed dress shoes for an event; thus I commuted up to SF (RIP Stanford Shopping Center's Allen Edmonds store). My salesperson measured my foot and brought out a pair that fit perfectly which I then purchased. This is my second visit (technically third as they didn't have my size the first time I visited for a different pair of shoes two years ago and so they had to ship it to my home. Upon receiving the shoes, the shoes came unlaced and I had trouble lacing the shoes. Thankfully another AE salesperson helped me lace them up when I returned for help) and I look forward to coming back whenever I need to buy dress shoes. read more

I brought my shoes in to inquire about some recrafting services. I asked the employee to help me make a decision about different packages. He was extremely unhelpful and provided almost one word answers and when asking clarifying questions or recommendations he would not provide any useful insight to help me make a decision. Like bro, if I'm asking what would you recommend "any option is fine" is not a useful opinion. Let me know the pros and cons of each option and why you would select something. The worst service ever. I was going into the store with the intent of buying 2-3 pairs of shoes as there is no store in my hometown. The sales associate that called himself the manager was in a foul mood, did not want to be bothered. He was annoyed that I was inquiring about the shoes. He just didn't want to help at all. Another client walked in asking about clothing and he was as irritated with that client as he was with me. It's a shame that Allen Edmonds hires these staff members that ruin a company's credibility for excellent service. I am sure it has taken them years to perfect their craft. Allen Edmonds shoes are not durable. They do not meet my expectations for a $425 shoe. I am going back to wearing cheaper shoes. It's sad because they are beautiful and made in the USA. My first pair of black Strand shoes: --Purchased along with a brown Park Avenue --Salesman told me I was likely good for 1-2 years --Sole separated at toe after 6 months --Took shoe back --Same salesman now changed his story and told me this was normal --Offered to have them recrafted for half price --Salesperson suggested it was my fault for either getting shoes wet or not using shoes trees. Both false --Only wear them 2 days per week maximum --I negotiated recrafting for $0. --Salesperson told me he'd make a note in my account and would never discount recrafting again --Recrafted shoes failed after a few weeks: leather popped out of side --Returned them to store. The same salesperson gave me a free replacement pair very begrudgingly --I was told the same thing, that'd he'd make a note in my account and never do that again My replacement pair of Strand shoes: --Sole separated from shoe after 16 months of wear (see picture) --Shoes were worn only 2 days per week --Shoes were NEVER worn in the rain --Shoes trees used everywhere; I even take them to the gym I suggest avoiding these shoes: --They do not last as expected for the money. --I have several other pairs of $300+ shoes, notably Bally loafers, that have lasted for 5-10 years without sole separation. --$60 shoes from Macy's last longer than Allen Edmonds shoes --The salespeople provide inconsistent information about the shoes' durability and do not stand behind their expensive products. read more

I went here to buy shoes for my upcoming wedding and Ray was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and patient with me when working through which shoes to buy and finding the correct size for me -- there was more to it than I expected. I returned more than once with concerns (all of my making) about the shoes that I purchased and once again Ray was able to get me through everything. I will be returning at some point to buy another pair of shoes from this location, and highly recommend them to anyone in the market for a beautiful pair of shoes. Aw, I'm a little sad. This store was my last reason to endure the chaotic Union Square Traffic and the futile hunt for parking. But it was always worth it, because I enjoyed talking shoes with a knowledgeable, amiable, and helpful staff. I'd typically spend a couple thousand dollars a year at this particular store, not only on shoes for myself, but on gifts for my staff (Seriously! Check my account!). This is where I'd recommend new employees to go to pick up their first pair of real shoes. But, I suppose all good things must end. Today I visited both Allen Edmonds locations, and for the life of me I could not understand the general disdain I was receiving from the staff, but it was overt. I felt my every question perturbed and annoyed the salesman--as though someone like me had no business in a store like that. It was uncomfortable and I as I was clearly unwelcome, I just thought it best to leave...both stores. There was a time when I would receive email promotions from Allen Edmunds, yet I would still go to the store and place my order through my longtime salesperson--sadly no longer there. If you're reading these reviews you probably already know about Allen Edmonds shoes so my review will focus on this location, and not the quality of the shoes, not about pricing or style as some other people have pointed out. The reason why I am giving this location five stars is the excellent service and knowledge provided by Kevin. My feet had recently gotten slightly larger due to increased exercise activity (causing the foot to lose a little of its arch). I had a perfect fitting pair of Strands (an AE shoe type) 2 years ago but over time it became ill fitting due to my foot slightly changing, so I had to pick up a new pair. I decided to go to Nordstrom to see if I could pick up a good deal on the Strands since they were having a big sale. However, the sales associate there could not fit me correctly after several combinations, and the conclusion was that my foot doesn't fit the Strand shoe because it's not the right type of 'last' for my foot (the last is the mold the shoe is created on). Now this is a really superficial issue, but I was a bit bummed since the Strands were my favorite pair of casual dress shoes and I literally received positive compliments every time I wore them out, mostly from women, and from some men who are keen on fashion. The sales associate at Nordstrom recommended I go to the AE store to see what other lasts would fit me. Upon entering the store and explaining my foot size change issue as well as what the Nordstrom people said, Kevin immediately suspected that I was not measured correctly at the store. He pulled out a pair of strands in a combination the sales associate at Nordstrom didn't consider, and the shoes fit PERFECTLY! He was also very patient and understanding and walked me through other types of lasts, but the strand fit the best out of all of them. To his credit he also realized right when he remeasured my foot that the last #5 that the strand is built on would be the best fit out of the #3 and #8 lasts I asked to try on that are built with a larger toe box. I bought the shoes on the spot and was excited to have my favorite shoes in my new size fit again! I highly recommend working with Kevin if you are not familiar with sizing and lasts of AE shoes. This place also has most of the current AE styles if you're wanting to see what they all look like in real life vs online. read more

I was given a Gift certificate for Christmas and it was time to redeem it. Allen Edmonds shoes are some of the best shoes you can buy, they are timeless, classy and expensive. So when you make a selection you better be happy with. I went to Pinterest to view some of the shoes with wear with clothes I typically wear. I figure that would give a point to start. I'm totally impressed with the knowledge that Paul, the sales associate possesses. I was asking him about different shoes and colors to wear with suits, slacks and casual pants. I had many questions that he answered and he also brought out 2 other styles for me to try one. That is great customer service. I ended up selected a pair of Delrays (black oxfords) with shoes trees. They are handsome and and they make me look like a million bucks. I told Paul that I would be back in the spring for these classy tan brogue shoes with some styling mods that I tried on. Allen-Edmonds always had excellent quality shoes, but they were a bit on the stodgy side. The world has turned and they've upped their game with fresh colors and styling. We've also gone retro as a society in certain fashion respects, so what they carry looks cool again. A beautiful pair of broughams suddenly looks great with a pair of jeans. The service I received at the Sutter Street store was terrific. LA gave a warm greeting and fitted me far better than if I was left to my own devices. When I picked out what I wanted she impishly pointed down at her own feet to show me she was wearing the same model, but in blue. She also suggested a belt that matched perfectly with my shoes. Ray put a polish on my new shoes and politely declined a tip when offered. Altogether, it was service from another era. Let's face it guys, most of us are wearing some butt ugly shoes. This is a store where you get what you pay for. I came in yesterday and worked with Ray to find a couple pairs of dress shoes for a new professional wardrobe. Happening upon the store on the day of their biyearly big sale was already lucky and allowed for some great deals so I could afford twice as much as I expected, but even better than the deal was getting to work with Ray who is a clear veteran seller. I have been told by other shoe sellers I have some of the strangest top flat feet they've seen and I normally have a hell of a time finding anything that fits well but between Allen Edmonds many width options and Ray working some kind of magic to manipulate the leather I got some of the best fitting shoes I've ever had after about 2 hours of attentive fitting. Before we got into any sizing though, Ray carefully explained how the shoes were made which helped me get on his page when we were working on finding that perfect fit. Plus he gave me some great tips for the rest of my wardrobe shopping. I'm looking forward to restoring and resoling these shoes at Allen Edmonds for decades. read more

I love my Allen Edmonds, they are by far the most comfortable pair of shoes I have ever owned and that is why I continue to go back. If you stand all day like I do you need a good quality pair of shoes. These are my favorites. However, the last pair I took in to have sent back for reconditioning they told me that the factory wouldn't accept since they had been resold elsewhere. I then went back to my desk and printed up a free shipping label and sent to the factory direct. They resoled my shoes and I received them today and they look like new. For paying a premium for these shoes I'm disappointed they turned me away at the store. I love Allen Edmonds but am weary of the staff. read more

I own half a dozen or more pairs of Allen Edmonds shoes, so I was already a fan when I walked into the Union Square store this afternoon. I was actually helping my husband pick out a new pair of shoes. Entering the store, we received a welcoming smile from Michael, the General Manager. He didn't approach us immediately; he gave us a little time and space to look around. When we had made a tentative decision, I looked up, and there was Michael, ready to help. He was casually but smartly dressed. His crisp blue jeans were turned up slightly at the cuffs, exposing a pair of Allen Edmonds Palm Beach weave tassel dress loafers with no-show socks. Not only was he wearing a pair of high-end Allen Edmonds shoes, he was totally rocking them. He explained the difference between the two shoe styles we were looking at (Park Avenue and Carlyle), measured my husband's feet, and then brought out four boxes containing the two styles, each in two different sizes. He observed, and pointed out to us, where the vamp of the shoe broke as my husband was walking. Who notices that kind of detail? We settled on a pair of Park Avenue cap-toe balmorals...and now I'm seriously considering going back for those loafers that Michael was wearing. My point is that he's very blunt with his suggestions, but in a friendly manner. I visited this Allen Edmond's to be sized after becoming interested in the brand and ordering a size too high from Nordstrom's. After my first visit, i left with a Bourbon 5th Avenue with sizing that was just off. The customer service since then has been remarkable, and Nate did what he could to address the sizing problem. However, the shoes have just been conforming poorly to my foot and the creasing in the leather is terrible. Then i met Paul, who is an outstanding salesman. I ended up purchasing my second set of AEs from him (correctly sized), and he went out of his way to ensure I was completely satisfied (not just with the new purchase, but also with my 5th avenues, which he said i could bring back in again to determine what the problem was). Paul went above and beyond and i am definitely happy with my experience so far. Not sure what the low ratings are about. I have always gone into this store wearing casual clothing and have been treated very well. As for the Nordstrom's comparison: I also purchase from Nordstrom's regularly and you cannot beat their return policy on shoes. However, AE sizing is trickier than other shoe brands and it may be worth getting sized by someone as experienced as Nate or Paul. It's hit or miss with Nordstrom associates, and for that you have to weigh in whether you want better sizing, service, and knowledge of the show upfront, vs. a no-questions-asked return policy even with significant wear of the sole. read more

This shop is okay, not great. They have great prices on good shoe care products such as leather conditioners, polish, brushes, etc. I use their leather conditioner on some of my shoes and it's good stuff for the price. They also stock some very well-priced accessories such as men's scarfs. When I was in the store, they had nice wool scarfs, made in Scotland on sale for $29. I bought two. They also sell belts and other and sundry items (like cuff links) other than shoes. Allen Edmonds makes good shoes for businessmen, to wear with a suit. They lean towards a more corporate conservative sleek business look, rather than casual or 'cool' look though. Sorta boring. I however generally prefer the styling, quality, and less mass-produced artisan workmanship of Alden shoes and boots (down the street), but Alden shoes are certainly more money. But in all cases, I prefer Alden over AE when comparing the two. Alden makes all of their shoes in the USA whereas Allen Edmonds now outsources some of their production to Puerto Rico. For a simple dress shoe, I don't think you can go wrong with Allen Edmonds for the price though for something more special, for me it's Alden all the way. Of note-the company really needs to streamline their offerings though-they have too many similar shoes and it can be confusing. And, a few of the shoes I specifically went to this store to check out in person after viewing them on the website, were not carried in the store!
