The store has an odd layout and iffy lighting, but the selection is very good considering the size of the line, the staff is very nice, and they seem very willing to work with you to get you what you want. Also, now that they re-opened an SF store we have a location to drop off Allen Edmonds shoes to have them sent off for clean up via the factory! The only thing I wonder is if the staff, like much of Union Square isn't a little jadded by the looky-lo's. I have several pairs of their shoes and have bought two pairs from them since they opened and yet the associate who helped me the first time and was fantastic barely made an effort to say hello or good-bye when I came in for my second visit. Odd, but I'm sure he was busy with another project and must have felt I was in good hands. Good stuff overall though and you can't beat the range of sizes, lasts and styles for the price. read more

I went into this store desperate to find quality walking shoes for "The City" My leather Merrill's were giving me blisters and these Merrill's were painful to walk in. The clerk, Mario is attentive and a good listener. He took time to measure my feet and brought me a pair of Allen Edmonds which complimented my jeans in both style and color. My stay there was unhurried as I was allowed to walk around the store for sometime making certain this was the right pair of shoes for me. With my new Allen-Edmond's I walked seven miles the same day of purchase. I know of no other shoes which perform as well. Sure Allen-Edmonds cost more. Your feet take you everywhere and quality shoes take you even further. Once you own a pair, no other shoe will do. read more

The 5 star is for Rich, a fantastic employee and someone who still knows what it means to deliver great service. The shoes are stylish and seem to stay in good shape if well taken care of. I would give the shoes a 4.5. I wear three different styles of AE's. Strand (a must), park ave and Madison. I've sent two back for their reconstruction process and although the process takes several weeks, it's worth it. They also have some very high quality clothing. Extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff, and a high-quality product. Ignore the haters - these are shoes that are beautifully built from high-quality leather and are built to last - if you take care of them. Have them polished once a month, and ALWAYS keep trees in your shoes when you're not wearing them. Then, in a few years if you've worn the soles down, take advantage of AE's excellent remanufacturing service to have them re-soled. They'll come back looking brand new! SHORT STORY Had to return 2 different pairs of shoes do to MY mistake and customer service took extremely good care of me. Would absolutely recommend these shoes and company! FULL STORY I had a flawed experience going to Nordstrom and trying on a pair of Allen Edmonds Strands so I came to this Allen Edmonds Store to make everything right. At the time they fit great but upon doing research and actually going to the AE store I found out I would have been wrong. Firstly I got sized wrong at Nordstrom and secondly I thought I would cheap out and I got a pair or Cole Haan Whole cuts on sale. I ended up going with the measurements I received from Nordstrom and bought a pair of AE Carlyle and the fit felt off. So I returned the Cole Haan's and "WORE" my Carlyle's the day I went to the AE store. I was helped immediately by LA who ended up sizing me down a half size long and 1 size narrower. This made my feet feel like a million bucks. I then explained I still needed another pair to replace the Cole Haan's I returned at Nordstrom which were black. I had been eyeing the Park Ave and the 5th Ave but ended up going with the Park Ave since it's slightly more formal. She got me sized and remember I said I "WORE" the Carlyle there, she asked to me hand over those so she could send them back and overnight the correct size to my house. This way I could also wear the Park Ave home to break in. I felt fine at first but upon making it to BART they started to hurt my feet. I came back the next day and spoke with Mario who resized me to a better fit which I should have noticed before I left the day before. All in All I received above and beyond customer service with both of MY personal mistakes. Allen Edmonds now has another life long customer. LA and Mario, thank you both again. read more

Terrible customer service. I came wearing sneakers (casual Friday). I was immediately looked at and ignored. When asked for assistance I was assisted with an attitude. Just because I wore sneakers that day the sales representative made it awfully apparent that he thought I would not be buying shoes. I ended up with leaving and purchasing nothing. One of the biggest myths about buying shoes is that you need to "break them in" before they become truly comfortable. If that was true, then Allen Edmonds products need at least a five year break-in period. I have never owned a more uncomfortable pair of shoes. They're stiff as all get-out and never adopt to your gait. A total waste of a lot of money. I'm returning to Grenson, Alden or Johnston and Murphy. At least their shoes feel great from the first and have no need of "breaking in". read more

I don't look like a business man and I don't go into the store dressed in a suit.... so when I've visited this store at 2 different times over the spread of many years, the salesman practically ignores me. There's no offer for assistance, virtually no greeting, and the salesman is behind the counter doing his own thing... completely like I'm not there. I went to this store this afternoon. After I opened the door I was expecting some kind of greeting from the salesman standing behind the counter but no. I said hello and still I heard nothing back. I almost wandered every corner of that store looking at different shoes for about 5 minutes but that guy just didn't have the decency to at least ask me what I was looking for. Came to drop off shoes for a gift return and the guy flat out refused to make the return stating he needed the physical card to return the funds. I left and went to the other store in the Embarcadero center and not only did they accommodate me by taking the card info down but offered to just give me store credit on a card instead! I would personally never buy from this store. Customer service is horrible and discriminatory unless you're walking in dressed in a $5,000 suit. I would recommend buying all your AE shoes from Nordstrom instead. Nordstrom shoe sales associates are much more knowledgeable and measured my foot properly and correctly and took their time and patience to fully assist me. Allen Edmonds are my brand for shoes. They are one of the last few All American bespoke shoe makers. Once you try on a pair of Allen Edmonds you won't ever want to go back to the regular shoes you find in department stores. The service at this store is First Rate. They are very attentive, knowledgeable and really take the time to make sure you get a shoe that fits you correctly. I was helped by a gentleman named Mike Dubuque. Bonus points for being named Mike as well, haha. But joking aside, he was truly great. He helped size me for a pair of Park Avenues and brought out several sizes for me to try. The ones he had in stock were not fitting perfectly on my feet and instead of trying to sell me something he had in stock, he said he would gladly order a pair from the factory for me try on. He said that from the sizes I tried, I must be the size they didn't have available. Low and behold he was right. I ended up getting a couple of pairs of shoes from them. If you're looking for a high quality pair of shoe that will last you 10-20 years, come and get a pair of Allen Edmonds. Your feet will thank you. read more

I had bought Dalton shoes from Allen Edmonds online that were really hard to break in. I've been to this shop multiple times. These guys are awesome! Jay Stratton makes sure that every time I walk in I have a great customer experience. He worked on my shoes to break these in so I can wear these comfortably. Actually, several other associates at this shop have worked on my shoes to break these in to make these fit great. Now these fit snug. Great selection when you cant find what you want at Nordy's. Some may think the cost is excessive, but consider well made shoes with leather uppers and soles can be refurbished more than a few times. So spending $300 or so for a pair will outlast three or four pair for under $100. I have had a pair of Park Ave's for 7 years and they still look less than a month old. read more

Superb customer service. I was interested in the Dalton boots and they did not have the color I was looking for in my size. Within two days they ordered it in to the store. After purchasing the boots I had to switch out one of the shoe bags and they had one on hand which was exchanged without a hitch in less than 30 seconds. Awesome awesome! read more

Some of the best customer service I've had anywhere. I bought a pair of Bayfields on Allen Edmonds' website and exchanged them there for a smaller size quickly and with no problems. Another time, I bought a pair of shell cordovan Strands over the phone. They were too narrow so I had to go in to exchange them; no problem. I found out that all the shoes were on sale so I called to see if I could get a retroactive discount. No problem. They even let me do it over the phone without proof of having a receipt. Another time, I bought a pair of shell cordovan Dundees. I commented to the sales associate (Nathan) that I noticed the price of the shoes had increased by $20 during the last couple of months. He didn't hesitate to give me a $20 discount. Now that's good customer service! Plus the shoes are great. Go in there to buy or just to browse. Exceptional customer service from Paul Sweeney/ AE. I bought a pair online, and it was too big. Paul fit me for a new pair. 5 days down the line, the fit was too tight for me. Called up the store and they emailed me a mail-in label. They streched the shoe and mailed it back. Turns out the shoe was pretty tight even then. Called up Paul and he told me to come in to re-check the fit. Exchanged my one week used pair with a brand new pair (one size down and wider) and I couldnt be happier about the fit. Having been to this store twice, from my experience it is pretty clear that any notion about the staff being snobbish or uppity are unfounded. I am just a simple, respectful guy. AE makes some very nice shoes. i've bought 3 pairs of shoes here and have been very satisfied with all of them. They run $250-$300 but are worth it. I can put on a brand new pair and wear them for 12 hours straight and not have blisters. read more

Ordered a pair of shoes and paid for it. Called to let them know I did not want the shoes any longer. On the phone, attendant said they credited the $300+ back to me when I called the first time. Upon checking my credit card info at end of month, it was not. I called and they said "whoops" and that there was a "disconnect." Came here since my s.o works at corporate, I heard of the brand but never bought a shoe until my partner bought me a pair. I'm not sure who helped me but it was a guy named Marco? Or Marcus or the guy with a scruffy bread with glasses. He measured me up and showed me other colors and asked how they fit and eventually went for the same color and style my gf bought me but we had to exchange it and have the new one shipped to my house. The total process was easy, store is small but I like it has all the shoes for display. And everyone going inside knows the quality their getting spending money here. Great service in this slightly smaller store (compared to their Embarcadero location). The shop is well located near Union Square and the selection is wonderful. They carry even the wide shoes. Well-made, sharp, classic, and comfortable shoes. Moderately expensive but durable. Most importantly, though, the 2nd pair I bought at this location developed a small separation of the sole at the toe. They were only 6 months old at the time. I was expecting a debate about whether they should repair the shoes gratis, but instead they actually just replaced the shoes with a brand new pair!
