Second time coming here. 2/2 times I couldn't get service. Both occasions, could not get the same bartender to look at me (place wasn't busy, came for a drink and food, not even a minimal effort). So instead I looked at other reviewer for help and decided to try the pork belly and octopus combination. We also decided to get an appetizer. When the appetizer arrived the presentation was trash. Lucky day was the day we walked into Alma for lunch for a Christmas shopping break. I agree with all the rave reviews for the food and drinks. I had the chicken verde burrito bowl and it was thoroughly enjoyable. The chicken was tender and full of flavor. I had to save some of it so I could enjoy it at home. My wife had the shrimp tacos. Amazing flavor for the shrimp. Sautéed with butter that you could not miss and it was not overcooked. The fresh made tortilla chips were crispy with the air pockets that snapped when I bit into them and the salsa and guacamole were fresh and delicious. Getting down to the basics, my wife could not stop complimenting the beans and rice, truth! I have no photographic proof but trust me, the presentation for our food was perfect. Colorful, fresh and so appetizing. The luck of the day was meeting the bartender/owner/chef, Vance. It is not often that you get to spend your whole meal time visiting and raving about the food with the guy who makes it happen. It felt like we were hosting a Boston foody show. Vance was excited and truly proud of his menu. There was so much he shared and told us about. His recipes are developed from his mom's recipes. This guy must have ate like a king when he was a kid. From coconut infused tequila, to the homemade queso sauce, to the house margarita, we got the special treatment (thank you to all of you who did not dine at that time so we could have Vance to ourselves). It is hard to not be excited about food when the chef is telling you that he sources everything locally from the seafood at the docks to the rice in E. Boston to the pasta in the N. End. The effort is amazing and shows in every bite. Some of our conversation included questions like: "Why the hell are you here and not in the South End?" He'd blow the doors off Burro Bar and Yellow Door (and we love those places). The themes of skeletons and death just didn't sit well with us as 1) it's January, not October, and 2) we were the only patrons in the bar. The guy behind the bar was extremely rude, to the point that his behavior could not be classified as "normal". Each interaction was shockingly rude. He would literally look at us with a very angry face, and not even respond. He served us a beer in a dirty glass, and when we asked him to correct the mistake, he just poured the beer from the dirty glass into a new glass.
