We are currently at The Hotel Zachary for a two night stay. We have been down to the bar both nights and can honestly say the service is 0 out of 10; truly atrocious. The drinks are fine but the bartenders are disinterested and extremely slow. We had to beg for glasses of water to accompany our cocktails and for our bill. I suggest finding someplace else for cocktails in Wrigleyville. read more

Beautiful space and delicious (and pricey) cocktails! Everytime I've been to this spot something is always off. The first time I've was there or waiter charged us for items our group didn't order and didn't apologize when we alerted him to his mistake - he actually acted annoyed that we wanted him to remove the incorrect charges. The next time I've was there the bartenders mixed up the cocktail recipes for our drinks... Very apparent because mine was supposed to have mezcal and my friend's cocktail shouldn't have had mezcal. This most recent visit, it was Winter and the door to the patio got stuck open Everytime the waitstaff went in/out causing an unpleasant cool breeze. The staff also was so anxious to set up for Saturday brunch they made us move from the bar to a table nearby. I keep trying this place hoping one day to have a great experience, but every time I leave thinking that was meh... And there are so many better options in Wrigleyville. So I came here tonight to celebrate my birthday at "camp Zachary". This is a cool concept on the patio at hotel Zachary facing Gallagher way and wrigley. You sit in a tent with a heater and a view of wrigley (one of my favorite places on earth ). I loved the view and atmosphere! We had a reservation for a two hour time slot (630-830) on a Thursday night. We had to guarantee to spend $250. We managed to spend $444 (including the 20 percent gratuity). I tried earlier in the day to verify my reservation as I made it though resy and never spoke to a person. When I texted the reservation via resy to 6 people ( did not include two) they changed my number of people from 8 to 6 based on who i forwarded the reservation to. When I called hotel Zachary they told me there was no one to speak to in the restaurant (this is at 3 pm) and if I got a confirmation email or text from resy I was fine. On the way down I called the hotel to ask about the cost of parking. They told me to just valet at the hotel. When I asked how much that cost they told me they did not know it varies per day. Wow super helpful. I was able to get a spot on SpotHero for $8 in the hotel Zachary parking garage. Once I got there they did have my reservation and we moved to the tent. Very cute with enough seating for 8 and a heater in the tent. Very small table in the center for 8 people to eat and drink. Our waitress was really nice. I loved the view and tent was cozy !The food was average and drinks were expensive. I did enjoy my burger but the peppers appetizer was not good. Now the worst part- one of my guests ordered the Caesar salad which came with anchovies. Gross. She took the anchovies off and bravely ate the salad. The apps were below average and the meals were average. We were given a last call at 805 for our reservation that ended at 830. We clearly could have just walked our drinks to the bar at 830 but that seemed to be what they needed to turn the tent around for the next reservation at 9 pm. Stupid. Fast forward to about 1.5 hours after dinner and my guest who ate the Caesar salad is vomiting repeatedly. I tried to call the restaurant to warn them but again when I called I was told there was no one to talk to from the restaurant. No manager. No one. No one there who can confirm your reservation, tell you your parking options or speak to you about a guest that may have just contracted food poisoning at your restaurant. Great concept but poor execution . I wanted to add to my original post yesterday. The director of front office, Rachel, and another manager both called me about my evening. They seemed genuinely interested in improving the experience for others. They went through all the ingredients from the ceasar salad and threw them out just in case something was bad. She apologized and assured me that should not have been our experience. She stressed how important customer service is and how they would use this incident as a teaching tool. Could not have handled it better. I will give them another chance. Great location, expensive food and drinks but that is to be expected in that area. read more

One of my favorite spots to grab a cozy drink with friends. The ambiance is unmatched. And I love that they're dog friendly! Menu is on the pricier side but that's pretty standard for a hotel lobby bar. I go for the atmosphere more than anything. My one wish is that they'd bring back the hot toddy winter specials they had a few years ago. They were so good and I still think about them. read more

Weird experience here today. Came for a birthday brunch with a couple of girlfriends (5 of us total) all of us each ordering an entree - plus we shared 2 bottles of the rose Prosecco. My meal came 20 minutes after everyone else's (why? I only ordered the eggs, bacon, and toast) and then abruptly after I got my food, the server dropped our check with no words. We hadn't asked for the bill - we had only ordered our second bottle about 15 minutes earlier - it felt very clearly like they wanted us out. Then about 10 minutes later, the waitress came back, ripped up the original bill, and gave us a new bill - again with no words. There were plenty of tables available for anyone else coming in, and we watched her take a new table, so it didn't seem like she was trying to leave. We decided to finish up, head out, and spend the rest of our money elsewhere. The hotel and interior are gorgeous, but not enough to warrant a weird vibe/bad experience. read more

This is my favorite place to grab a delicious beverage while letting the crowds disperse after attending a Cubs game. However, last night was just bad. I brought my group of 9, boasting of how wonderful it would be, and I walked out embarrassed for having brought them there. The cocktails were delicious, no doubt about that. While I realize it was a busy time, things could have been handled better by our waitress. She greeted us with a less-than-thrilled attitude upon arrival at our table. The wait to get the cocktails, understandable. But we ordered arancini, and it took our server 25 minutes to tell us it was 86'd, and by then, the kitchen was closed. It took at least 15 minutes for us to get the bill/our credit cards back; I had to flag down another employee to assist with that. When our server came back, she "jokingly" blamed the wait time on us for having 3 separate tabs, which she claims caused the computer to malfunction. I picked up the larger portion of our bill but was not provided an itemized receipt. Since my other two guests DID receive an itemized bill (which I later received after pushing back), I can only assume she wanted to hide from me the fact that 20% gratuity was already added. The cherry on top was that, when we were walking out, we exchanged "thank you's" with the server while she was at another table of about 8 patrons, and she repeated to them the nonsense about us being the cause for her computer breaking (I'm assuming it was her way of trying to save face for offering poor service to that table as well). I stayed as a guest at the Hotel Zachary for two days for a work trip and had the worst experience in hotels in my life. You can read my review for the hotel by looking at the hotel's Yelp page. It was quite the unbelievable experience. The hotel may be in serious need of improvement, but the mixology crew here at the bar and the chefs in the back of the house clearly know what they're doing. In fact, I would highly recommend grabbing a drink or an evening bite here whether you're a guest or a local. Food/Drinks: 5/5 Amazingly good. You can order drinks or dinner at the bar. For dinner the first night I stayed there, I had the Pan-Seared Fish Sandwich. The brioche bun was both crisp and soft, with that "melt-in-your-mouth" feeling once you took a bite into it. The fish was seared evenly and seasoning/sauces well balanced. The chefs in the back clearly know what they're doing. Later that evening, I was looking for a smooth, light drink with just a little bit of citrus in it. The bartenders there (both guys) were awesome. They whipped out a Lake Effect, one of their craft cocktails, right away and checked up on me to see how I was doing with it. I'm a big fan of elderflower in cocktails, so the St. Germain and grapefruit hit the spot. Service: 4/5 Bar staff/Kitchen staff- Amazing. No issues at all with my food or drinks. Very professional. I had a great talk with one of the bartenders, telling him my woes with the hotel, and he was quite the good listener, offering his two cents and doing his best (even though it wasn't his job) to boost my spirits. This guy should be promoted to the hotel's head of customer service. Servers- Very uneven. They're clearly lacking in training and seem new to the food industry. I asked to go ahead and order my entree and come back down to eat it, but when I came down later, my server had put it into a to-go box. Later the next morning, the same server had another issue with my breakfast in the sister restaurant (Alma). More training is needed in this area. Environment: 4/5 The bar and dining area are well designed, though a little too much wood and fabric in my opinion for both seating surfaces. The bar is located in the open-air lobby of the hotel, next to check-in on the 2nd floor. You have to navigate around some tables to get to a bar seat. I really like the overall look of the hotel, and the bar does well to give you a quaint feel to it. Bottom Line: Again, read my review on the hotel. It's disastrous. It was the worst hotel experience in my life. It was hopefully an isolated incident and something the hotel can improve on. But the shining light of Hotel Zachary- the bar and restaurant. The Zachary (named for Zachary T. Davis, the original architect of what is now Wrigley Field) opened at 1:00 PM on March 30. We wandered in about 24 hours later. They're right across Clark Street from the Friendly Confines, and will probably draw much of their trade from it. Much of the first floor commercial space was still being built out, shooting for completion in time for the April 9 Cubs home opener; but the second floor front desk, bar, and restaurant, and presumably the guest rooms, were in business, and on their second day of operations were drawing a fair number of curiosity seekers. We had lunch at the bar/restaurant--apparently nameless, except for the waiter's "The Bar at the Zachary," which may be purely descriptive. It's attractive space, with a four-sided island bar. Dining and lounge tables, and a nice fireplace lounge. There's a patio overlooking Clark Street, but today wasn't the weather for it. Also an enclosed room which looks as if it may be set up for a breakfast buffet. Full bar service, including a modest wine list ($10 and up per glass, bottles $36-$52), cocktails, and a small but good beer list, from which I had a Noon Whistle Peach Berliner Weisse. The initial lunch menu is somewhat limited: a number of cold appetizers; four salads; four sandwiches; and one dessert, a rotating ice cream sandwich of the day. We tried the beer bratwurst and the fish (halibut) sandwich, both with fries and both pretty good. A welcome addition to Wrigleyville! read more

At one point, one of the bartenders put the mezcal that was supposed to be in my friend's drink into my gimlet, but he corrected it after we flagged him down. If you're looking for a typical Wrigleyville experience, this isn't it, which is a good thing if you don't like getting vomited on or being surrounded by 20-somethings ripping shots of Jameson. The bar area itself is gorgeous, to the point where you forget that you're drinking in Wrigleyville. The bar was designed so that it feels like you just walked into an upscale hotel from the early part of the 19th century. The architect should be commended for that, as the aesthetic is quite lovely, with the low slung seating for the tables, an exposed ceiling, and ornate light fixtures. Service was lacking to say the least, despite the fact that the bar was hardly that crowded during our visit. That could owe to the fact that the place hasn't been open long, but if that becomes the norm, this place is going to have a difficult time pleasing the high end clientele that it aims to serve. One more thing, and this is more for the internet's amusement than it is a reflection of the quality of this establishment. They do have an option on the menu called "Edward 40 Hands." Edward 40 Hands, as those of you who have partaken may recall, involves duct taping a pair of 40s to your hands and not removing the duct tape until both bottles have been finished. In Wrigleyville, this would not be out of character for a bar to offer. However, "Edward 40 Hands" at the Hotel Zachary will get you a pair of 40 ounce bottles of beer, sans duct tape (mercifully) and some glasses out of which to drink the beer. This is a refined place after all. So while the Edward 40 Hands may be a cheeky nod to the debauchery taking place in the neighborhood, the offering -- $15 for 80 ounces of beer -- is actually one of the better values at the place if you do the math. Anyways, this place is nice, it's worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood, but it definitely feels out of place in the neighborhood. Maybe that's not the worst thing in the world. read more

This one instantly rises to my top 10 all-time favorite hotels, out of all the Marriotts I've stayed at as a lifetime Bonvoy Titanium member. This new historic hotel whose namesake pays homage to Wrigley Field architect, Zachary Taylor Davis, is less than two years old. And, for now at least, its also only a category 5, so you can use some classes of your free certificates here and that's a steal for what you get: it's fresh, new and classy with an old, historic feel - superb design elements with wood, steel and leather. My only complaint was the rude dude who tried kicking us off their awesome outdoor balcony lounge at 11:30 because his shift was ending. This is a great venue for couples, after work events like ours, or pre-gaming. You will definitely want to stay until last call, either inside their spacious lounge with Art Deco-themed half-circle leather booths or outside overlooking Gallagher Way and Wrigley Field. Don't forget their artisan bakery and complimentary coffee before you check out. Overnight parking is a hefty $75 unless you score a SpotHero deal like we did, for $45. Can't wait to go back! This is one of the most beautiful bars in Chicago, whoever designed it did an amazing job! Adjacent seating with couches, chairs, loveseats and such surround the large square bar. A door in the North corner opens up to a fireplace and a veranda overlooking the facade of Wrigley Field! Great Wrigley Field blueprint painting as well as portraits of the architect & wife greet you on the way up the stairs. Nice little menu, beer list & cocktail list...Joint is must see but that's where it ends unfortunately. Service is absolutely abysmal & untrained. For a place of this scope & size you would think it would be run right, but no. Ordered some drinks from a completely clueless waiter that knew nothing about the menu, beer types or anything else. We asked him about three different drinks & beers and each time he went to the bar to ask the KID bartender that didn't know either? We waited & waited & waited... no drinks... not even made sitting on service bar after a LONG time. It wasn't busy nor a game day. We left without the interaction of any Manager at all. I am so glad to have stopped in here on my visit to Chicago! So refreshing to be greeted with a smile and EXCELLENT service!! The bar staff was friendly and eager to wait on my friend and I, a big improvement over other places I visited while in Chicago. The staff was happy to accommodate an outside terrace request, without a reservation. This is especially notable as it was a game night and the terrace overlooks Wrigleyville. We went there for the Santa's brunch. $60 a head for a buffet and bottomless mimosas. The hot food( eggs, sausage, bacon, potatoes waffles) at the buffet was cold and rock hard. Mimosas were 95% Minute Maid Orange juice and 5% Prosecco. They also charged us extra for any deviation from orange juice. If this is any indication of how a regular meal is, i wouldn't waste my time. Not worth it. read more

We had a great experience here before a Cubs game. We sat on the balcony and it was fab! There were 6 of us. We had a short wait for a table (10 minutes) and the food and drinks (spicy margaritas) were great! We split a few things and everything was really good. The hotel lobby bar is designed very well and brings you back to the 1920s era only modernized. The bartender with the rockabilly style, is lacking when it comes to attentiveness and needs of the patrons. On the section of the bill where it says tip, I politely noted "Service sucked" and then sign my name. As far as I'm concerned if you are a bartender or in the service industry the number one priority is the customer and being attentive to their needs. This place looks good but doesn't meet the expected level of service, it leaves me feeling ripped off. read more

I visited the Zachary hotel bar last Friday with a friend. First the good parts: the off-beat retro decor was relaxing and fun. The sitting area in the back with the fireplace is cozy. The outdoor terrace that overlooks Wrigley is spectacular. My Sauvignon Blanc was outstanding. However there were two huge problems. First, the food was awful. Really bad. Flavorless and dry. Second, we had the strangest and most unsettling experience with two of the bartenders. When our server disappeared on us, and we needed to pay our bill, we went to the main bar and asked for help finding our server. The bartender, who was clearly agitated, asked me what his name was. I didn't know his name but described him (he was very tall and there is no way he wouldn't know him because there were only a few servers working). He said he couldn't help me. Actually he said he would not help me. He was aggressive and angry. He literally couldn't be bothered. The other bartender behind the bar had the same hostile behavior. I've never encountered anything like it in my life. Definitely won't be returning. At least until they change the kitchen and the service. read more

My husband and I (and our dog) go to the Bar at Hotel Zachary a LOT. We love the ambience, the food, the wine and drink choices, the staff, really just about everything about it! We bring friends and family there and participate in a lot of the different fun events they have....HOWEVER...the music on Friday and Saturday nights ? We have actually turned around and gone somewhere else when we walked in to hear it...Its super loud, makes it really difficult to talk to your friends or really to even hear the servers. I don't believe that this bar is that kind of bar. Its a place to gather, with friends...even the seating around the perimeter suggests intimate conversations. The music makes that impossible. Anyway, we are not fans of the music nor were the friends that we brought fans. I kind of hope you discontinue it...We love you guys though! read more

First impressions are everything and this place does a good job because it's beautiful! However the service doesn't meet the expectation leaving me disappointed. The bartender was more enthralled with his conversation with a pretty lady than attending to us. I ordered two drinks and both deemed simple a Moscow mule and a mimosa both were of poor quality. The staff apparently did not validate my ticket when they said that they had done so. The person who "helps" you at the garage exit was not helpful, rather, she sounded suspicious. I'll spare you the incident details. Long story short, Ricardo (waiter) is in the wrong business. A patron near me was having a bad experience at the lounge and, when she shared that with him, he clammed up, showed no empathy, almost seemed angry that she even mentioned it, made an excuse, walked away, returned with her bill, dropped it in front her, stepped back without saying anything, waited for her to sign it, picked it up and never said a thing - not even an apology. Guests deserve better. Hey Ricardo, when a patron is unhappy or disappointed grow a pair, stand up straight, put your shoulders back, lean in and apologize, show sincere concern and interest without kissing a**, and act on a resolution that might make her night better, and then ask her to please come back. Shake her hand. Apologize. Be humble. It's ok to do these things. You made a simple mistake - your own dumb common sense - but a mistake nonetheless. Mistakes in your job can be rectified easily. Get a manager involved. Give the patron a drink or a free coupon. Do something - other than what you did. Tobthe Zachary I would say screen your applicants better, tighten up your hiring standards, and secret shop your own facility. Other than this, my previous several experiences were nice. Love the building and the atmosphere. Another notable observation...not a single waiter or waitress ever came over to check on me after this incident. In other words, after this patron left no one ever came over to ask me if I needed anything. Perhaps the word was out that I was "difficult" or associated with the patron next to me who was upset with Ricardo. Paranoia? I don't know. I'll give the Lounge one more chance in the future. Disclosure: customer service is my profession. I've been doing it and teaching it for 30 years. I'm friendly, fun, and easy to get along with but I was very disappointed in what I saw at the lounge tonight. read more

Aesthetically, it's a lovely space, the lighting is soft, the bar seats are cushy, the views are great, and it's a roomy space to bring your family and friends and show it off to out-of-towners. Even pre or post game on a busy day or night, I feel you could still get a place to sit if you came with friends. Service wise, for a place like this that hopes to maintain a high standard of service excellence, they have got to show some hustle. While the drink menu looked solid, I can (and have gotten) better service at any of the area crowded bars at 2am when its 50 times more packed. The bartenders pretty much flat out ignored my date and I and there were 5 other people at the bar, the patio maybe half full. Odd too, because we are not shlubs. We were dressed nice, sober, and it was 7pm and we were ready to enjoy a few drinks. Pft, whatever, we got one drink, contemplated just leaving since they took forever to get us the bill, and moved on to a place where the bartenders know how acknowledge a customer. read more
