Alma's popped up a while back on my radar screen, and I was happy to finally get a chance to try this place. My wife and I were heading up 35E, and as the Seminary Dr exit sign appeared, I thought, "Why does that sound familiar?" Well a quick check of the Yelp bookmarks, and Alma's was there. So we each went for a cone. I went Rum Raisin. I forgot what Thuy had. Both were very good, and homemade. But I think the best part would have been the bars. Some really good sound flavors, including my favorite, mango with chile. Okay seriously fellow Yelpers these are the pest "pops" or paletas you will ever eat!! They are homemade and cheap! I have been here plenty of times and I'm finally writing a review. This evening, the wife and I wanted dessert and decided to go to Alma's. It was an hour before closing so it wasn't terribly busy. The place is small and there is a main counter where the freezers are that hold many paletas and ice cream tubs of all different flavors. Most of the time the staff will greet you in Spanish but they do speak English as well so please did not feel inferior. I got the strawberries and cream paleta and the wife and kiddo got the cookies and cream. I've also had the vanilla and coconut one, which are pure heaven!! I can't say enough about Alma's and how lovely Jose and his family are. They make the best paletas. Hands down. Ever. I can't believe I used to give my money to Steel City. I was first introduced to this shop by our friend Kevin. He took us here on a late night paleta run. We decided to use Alma's for our wedding reception. Instead of having cake, we would have miniature paletas in 4 different flavors. Leading up to the reception we popped in many times to try different flavors of pops to make up our minds. We also ended up trying the pork tortas- so good. Spicy with out being too hot, lots of jalapeno and avocado. I've also tried the tostilocos- a bag of chips topped with spicy boiled peanuts, pickled pig skin, jicima, cucumbers, lime juice and hot sauce. I crave this stuff! The strawberries and creama is the best I've ever had- I've tried it at other places and the cream is too sugary or thick. This is perfect. I like to get the granola topping. For the reception we ended up getting mangonada- a chile mango pop with a chamoy swirl. Strawberry fruit- straightforward strawberry with seeds and everything. That was the first one to get eaten completely. We also had a sweet corn which was so delicious and creamy. Some people were hesitant about a corn flavored pop- but once they tried it they loved it. Lastly we had a tres leches pop. This was perfect! It had the creamy cinnamon flavored milks on the outside of the pop and a strawberry filling in the center. Jose let us use his paleta cart to keep everything cold- so people could just go over to the cart and loot around during the reception. There was consistently people standing around the cart trying different flavors. It was a huge hit! I will use them for any future events we have and of course pop in for tortas and tostilocos! read more

I tried the pistachio paleta the first time I came here -- it was very nice and creamy! I came back to try something new the next week -- the obispo! It was a dessert with shaved ice with your choice of flavoring, condensed milk, strawberry marmalade and a scoop of ice cream. I loved it! Most of the people I saw who ordered the obispo chose to have the ice cream on the top but you can put it on the bottom too. That's what I did and it was perfect.
