California is always a basic roll but this one was very tasty. The nigiri was nice, tried salmon and ikura. Nephew had unagi and it looked juicy and tasty. He really enjoyed it. BD does not eat fish or seaweed. So he had the shoyu ramen and really complimented it. Aloha sushi is one of my favorite sushi spots in the area. The food is always fresh and high quality. There are a great selection of sushi rolls to choose from (and they all have clever names). My favorite thing to get here is the firecracker appetizer and the hole in one roll. complete your meal with a side salad (with delicious dressing) or a hot bowl of miso soup. These items are delicious and a must get. I have yet to try the ramen bowls and the bento boxes, but they look delicious. This restaurant is popular in the area, so during the last couple times I ate here the restaurant was packed. It is worth the wait though. We have eaten here several times and this has been our go-to place for sushi until tonight. When we arrived, there were three dirty tables and some people picking up to-go orders. We were offered a table by the waiting area that was literally up against chairs where people pick up their orders. Or they said we could wait for a table to be cleared. We said we'd wait. No tables were being cleared and another family left, so now there were four dirty tables and another large family came in. We were all packed in the entrance. We saw two tables joined together and separated them so we only took up the two-seater. Then a server came by and said that was reserved for a family. There was no sign on the table and frankly, the server was rather rude so we left. We went a few doors down to Red Hot Chili Pepper, a new Indochinese restaurant. This place is good. Great, I'm not sure. Decided to go for lunch this last weekend and was impressed by how dark it was inside. They nail the strip mall grunge vibe. The wait staff was kind enough, but they didn't seem that into sushi. It took me some time to notice that the magic was happening behind the sushi bar where these two guys were prepping a massive bowl of fresh rice and carefully crafting roll after roll. We ordered six rolls for four people. I was surprised at how large each roll was. My favorite was definitely the Puff Daddy, covered with crunch and bursting with tangy flavor. I was a bit disappointed with the sauciness of the rolls which definitely seems to be hiding subpar fish. The classic "they all taste the same" criticism from some in our group was a let down. The inside seating area is a little dirty and grungy and could use a thorough cleaning. Our server sat us down and told us to scan the label for our menu. But we understand, it's a Covid world now but the comment about the bathroom is weird. The menu wouldn't load on either of our phones so she had to bring us a real menu. We were never asked for a refill on drinks. We had to ask a couple times for a fork. She also forgot that we wanted wasabi and ginger. Then we got the food.... We ordered garlic edamame, gyoza, and side salads. The server said it came with a ginger dressing. It actually came with a sesame dressing ( Japanese Mayo/sugar and sesame seed oil) We also ordered the broad stone roll, puff daddy roll, and the American river. All the food was AMAZING. The garlic edamame was basted in clarified butter. The gyoza had a terrific dipping sauce. All sushi rolls tasted fresh and unique. We loved the food. The American river had popcorn shrimp on it thy tasted great and the portions were very large. The one other issue was that they brought all the food out to the table within 5 minutes of each other. The salads, appetizers and main dishes all arrived at once. So this is your typical review that is driven by the food. The quality of the food saved the experience for us and this restaurant. Our review would have been a 2 had not for the food. As a foodie, I love hole in the wall locations that have great food. This restaurant would fall into that category. I dined here on Mother's Day today. I called and asked for a reservation, and the worker on the phone made sure he saved a table for my family of 5. Which I really appreciated because no restaurant was able to accommodate a reservation for my family. So that made us really happy. The service was great and the food was amazingly delicious. My husband loves everything and anything and says the quality of the raw fish is amazing. I personally don't like a ton of raw fish. This is for food quality. Only, the atmosphere was fine, restaurant was clean, and the service was good. Came in with my kiddos, each of them got a California roll and a missile. I got a deluxe sashimi platter, which is 15 pieces, I was quite impressed to see Ono as one of the sashimi options. I will say the cuts of fish were definitely a good size, you got three pieces of each type of fish, which included yellowtail, salmon, all he tuna, albacore, and Ono, none of the fish really had very much flavor. I have come to find in my experience that when fish doesn't have much flavor, it's generally on the lower quality side, so sometimes as long as it's not fishy or spoiled tasting that's OK if you're paying lesser quality prices. I paid $40 for the fish platter, it didn't come with a salad, edamame, soup, or rice. That was all extra. I got rice on the side, which was three dollars so it was pretty spendy for fish with very little flavor. I tasted the California roll, which was mostly rice, and it was incredibly sweet, more sweet than I think I've ever tasted a California rule to be before? Maybe a little too much sugar in the rice mixture today, no clue. Each soft drinks was three dollars which I also found to be pretty costly considering it was offbrand Mr. Pibb and lemonade. I will say the ginger was very strong tasting which I do like, it was not super soggy, or super sugary, like some other places, but the wasabi was a super bright bluish green color, it was odd. And I will definitely never go back simply because it was way too expensive for the quality sushi that you get, maybe the sushi rolls are where it's at? read more
