Got the Hawaiian BBQ Chicken Sandwich and WOW. This sandwich was hugeee. Two pieces of tender juicy chicken and the teriyaki marinade on these is very flavorful. Even the tomato and lettuce on these sandwich were fresh and enhanced the flavor so much. Mustard on these sandwich bottom bun and may on the top complimented the whole sandwich so well. My hands and face were a mess devouring it, it's a good thing i chose to-go and ate it at home. Great price for a big bite sandwich. I'll be back!! I've had this place on my list for awhile and didnt think it'd exceed my expectations so much. The portions were generous and everything was great. There were Polynesians (I would have guessed Samoan if you asked me) eating there and that's generally a good sign. The food came out quickly and the staff was friendly. Although there are a few tables a counter area its tight inside and I would not be surprised if its often filled up. Most people coming in did take out. We do Hawain BBQ whenever we get a chance so we have had great examples and some that were pretty bad. This was exactly what we were hoping for. The gravy and hamburger patties are seasoned perfectly to compliment each other. Due to the strong flavors of the main dish, the sides are less so, but add grea t contrast to the plate. This small shop on Western Ave. serves up some mean Hawaiian cuisine that will leave you with so much leftovers and a happy stomach. First, the portions are massive! I'm not sure why an additional mixed green salad is included. I did enjoy the guava drink which brought me back to my childhood growing up in Hawaii. The host/server was friendly and polite. The decor has somewhat of a tropical vibe. Being that this is a Hawaiian, Filipino, and Mexican restaurant, it's tough to have that visual balance. The staff was super friendly, and since it was our first time eating here, they did answer some of our questions about the food. They also helped us with a recommendation of what to eat, which was very helpful and did not disappoint. We ended up getting a combination lunch. That way we were able to try 2 lunch menu items. We ended up getting a Hawaiian barbecue chicken and a fried chicken, both were extremely flavorful! And we did try the Arbol salsa & the Katsu sauce-both were good. Really glad to try this place out! Saw it on Instagram and figured I would check it out with my brother and SIL. We swung by around 1pm on a Saturday and it was absolutely packed with pretty limited seating. Lucked out and a table was eventually open for us to sit down, but definitely would consider just doing takeout if you don't live too far away. Total for the mixed plate and drink was about $20. The sunset drink was great. Super refreshing and not overly sweet. Would definitely recommend. Food took a little bit to come out, but understandable for how busy it was. The food itself was very impressive! The chicken katsu was nice and crispy while remaining juicy and the chicken adobo was super flavorful with a good balance of of sour from the vinegar and saltiness from the soy sauce. They sauce they also have at the counter is pretty good. Nice with a little bit of spice! Also the macaroni potato salad and greens that come with your order is also nice to break things up. My brother and SIL also got mixed plates and got meats like the kalua pork which I thought was a bit dry and the tocinio which is apparently only around for this month but I found pretty yummy, too. Still think the katsu and chicken adobo were the best meats we tried. Only two minor nitpicks is I do wish there was just a bit more rice with my order because the sauce from the adobe was definitely delicious and some more rice to mop that all up would've hit. On the other side though, my brother ordered the spam musubi and I found that to be a bit too rice-heavy. All-in-all, great spot and definitely something I want to come back to again. We had a very enjoyable dinner here last night. The atmosphere was fantastic--sophisticated yet relaxed, with perfect lighting and great music. We started with the truffle arancini, which were absolutely incredible, and for the main course, the grilled sea bass was cooked to perfection. They definitely don't have too much good quality Hawaiian food in Illinois. First time I tried this place I had to get take out because seating was limited inside and not too many parking spaces. Food is delicious. We did two of the mixed plates so we got to try grilled tofu, Hawaiian grilled bbq chicken, lime chicken, and chicken katsu. The meat was all very moist and juicy. Aloha Wagon was listed in a Yelp list of best restaurants in the midwest, and I haven't been to a Hawaiian restaurant in a long time and not at all since I've lived in Chicago. I had an appointment about 20 minutes away so decide to give it a try. It's hard to miss given the paint job is bright blue, so when you see the blue box on Western you've made it there! This is a very small restaurant. They have four two-top tables, along with two spaces for counter seating; one of those spaces is high-top counter seating and the other is table height counter seating right by the kitchen/prep area. You'll order at the counter. They have a variety of options starting with their plates. These are a choice of one or two meats with green salad and the (ever present in Hawaiian cuisine) macaroni salad (they add potato to theirs here). White rice completes the meal. I chose a mixed plate to try a couple different meats, selecting the lime chicken and chicken adobo. Both were okay. I also tasted the Hawaiian BBQ chicken from someone else's plate, and that was good too. They use boneless chicken, which is good because I don't eat bone-in chicken; however, I think it was chicken thigh which isn't my preference. The portions are humungous so you're definitely getting your money's worth. In addition to their mixed plates there are burgers and other items. I also got one of their dessert bars--I think it's supposed to be pineapple coconut cheesecake--and that was a bit disappointing. For a dessert that uses two very distinct flavors, it was flavorless. I wouldn't have known I was eating something with either of those flavors; in fact I forgot that it had pineapple and the only giveaway about the coconut was the grated coconut that was on it. Overall the food was ok but I wasn't blown away, unfortunately. I'm glad I tried it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again. Aloha Wagon does catering as well if you're looking for something a little different for an event. Parking is street only; there are four or five spaces on Western in front of the restaurant and probably some on the side streets. There's also a bus stop steps from their door, though I don't know what number, and the Western station on the Pink Line is less than halfway down the block. read more
