Risotto of new potatoes with kaluga caviar and chive

I was hesitant to eat at Lacroix after reading some of the restaurant's recent reviews, but after a lovely dining experience, I am here to say that those people are wrong. We arrived on a Thursday night to a mostly empty restaurant. Service started out very slow despite there only being a few patrons. We were there for over 30 minutes before getting any bread, and I was starting to get hangry. After we placed our orders with our server, the service picked up. My husband and I decided to go for the four course pre fixe menu @ $135/person. It made sense since it was the better deal and was actually very reasonably priced. After eating some of the bread, I felt much better. The brioche bread was presented in the form of a cube. It could have been softer and more buttery on the inside, but it was still good. For our first courses, my husband and I both had the salad. Each chicory leaf was carefully stacked, with slices of celery root and citrus layered between the leaves to achieve the perfect bite with the soft and creamy cheese on the bottom. For our second courses, my husband had the langoustine (for an additional $10), while I had the pike dish. The quenelles of pike were essentially delicate fish cakes, served with a dark and savory sauce that was divine. The langoustine was also very good. I highly recommend the two. For our third courses, I had the risotto, and my husband had the veal sweet breads. The risotto was not actually risotto, but potatoes shaped to look like risotto. The flavors were good, and the serving of caviar was generous, but the dish would have eaten better if it was real risotto. My husband's veal sweet breads were super tender and flavorful. And for our final courses, my husband had the quail, and I had the venison. My venison was cooked to a nice medium rare. My husband and I both enjoyed our plates. Even though we were super full, my husband and I still made room for dessert, a millefeuille served with cotton candy on top. A playful twist on a classic dessert. Before we left, our server brought us complimentary chocolate truffles. These chocolate truffles were presented in a cloche and were shaped like black truffles, except that they were chocolate and had raspberry ganache inside. I have to say I am extremely blown away by Lacroix. The execution of the food at Lacroix is world-class. The menu makes sense, and the prices are comparable to places like Friday Saturday Sunday and Her Place Supper Club. Lacroix eats like a legit 2-star Michelin restaurant. We will gladly come back again and again.

Updated Feb 2026 - What happened?! Tonight's dinner was terrible. My son was excited to eat here for his 18th birthday celebration. The food was terrible. Over $600 for a family of 4 (only 2 cocktails total) and so disappointing. We won't be back.

We wanted to love this place so much, but unfortunately it was very disappointing :( We went for Sunday brunch, which is buffet style. Now, we all know buffets are not always top notch, but paying over 1K dollars for 6 people, you'd expect a LOT better. All around, the food was either cold or mildly warm. Nothing, and I mean nothing, was hot. Even the meats in the heating station were not hot (and to be frank, the 2 meats I had were very tough and didn't "melt in your mouth". I couldn't eat them. I have never had lamb that I couldn't eat before) They also served soup in glass shooters... while a neat concept, after 2 mins sitting out, it's cold. Another "neat concept" that didn't make much sense is the open kitchen. Half of the foods are in the kitchen, where the chefs are actively cooking. While I get the idea behind it, it's not very smart from a functionality standpoint. There are bussers going in and out of the kitchen non stop. I was very close to dropping an entire plate of food because a chef opened a freezer door extremely quickly and rammed it into my arm. It was very claustrophobic and it felt like we were invading their space. Not any of the chefs faults by any means, but the owner needs to find room elsewhere to serve food. Perhaps get rid of a table or 2. Their Sunday brunch was also supposed to have caviar. The main reason we came to this establishment was because the birthday girl loved caviar. They said they ran out of it. The best thing there was the bacon wrapped dates, but that's something I could make at home and it would taste just as good. Lastly, the service was mediocre. I feel like if you are eating at a high scale restaurant, water glasses should always be full and you shouldn't have to wait 20+ mins for the check. All around, would not go there again. There are much better places in Philadelphia to spend your time and money.

Lacroix is the main dining room of The Rittenhouse Hotel. I believe they offer elaborate multi-course fixed price dinners in the evening, although I only visited for breakfast at 7:15 a.m. on Saturday. I like the name "Lacroix". It reminds me of the Parisian couturier Christian Lacroix. It also means "The Cross" in French. The hostess led me into the long, narrow and rather anonymous room and offered me a table upon which the sun was pouring in from the window. I told her I did not want to sit in the sun. Accordingly, I was offered a large booth opposite that table which gave me shade as well as plenty of room to spread out. The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal were both available at a little table up front for guests at breakfast. Guess which one I chose? [Hint: The New York Times!}. At first, one of the waiters seemed a bit crabby. However, he later warmed up. I like to keep my breakfasts simple. Although large set breakfasts are offered [one was called "The Philadelphian"], I ordered a la carte: a couple glasses of orange juice, crispy bacon, buttered wheat toast and a warm Blueberry/Lemon Muffin. The meal was nicely served and tasted good. As a guest of The Rittenhouse, I did not have to fuss with credit cards and just signed my name and room number and I was out the door on to my next adventure in Philadelphia.

Afternoon Tea at the Rittenhouse Hotel

This review is specifically for afternoon tea at The Tea Room. The Tea Room is located on the first floor of The Rittenhouse Hotel. It's offerings include several selections to experience the tea, from a signature to some more opulent choices including a table side caviar preparation. Champagne is additional with some of the more grander choices. They are also very ADA compliant, for my disabled spouse.

If you're hanging out/staying near Rittenhouse, I highly recommend checking out Lacroix at the rittenhouse hotel. The restaurant is facing the park, so you can dine and people watch. Everything about the restaurant is beautiful, from the curtains to the tables to the artwork on the wall. We went for breakfast and ordered a little of everything. Highly recommend the eggs Benedict and the galette. It reminded me of the savory crepes I had while living in France. The service was amazing, our server Michael was extremely helpful and attentive. Sadly they're only open for lunch on certain days and breakfast daily. Can't wait to come back when they start dinner again!

I recommend the $95/pp weekend brunch buffet if you want quantity, with an emphasis on seafood, and a beautiful 2nd floor view of Rittenhouse Park. We came to the weekend brunch for my mom's birthday. We enjoyed our meal (the seafood and desserts in particular), but nothing wowed us despite the hefty price tag (total came to $365 with automatic 20% gratuity and 8% tax). Everything is a buffet except for the entree, which you order from the server a la carte - my partner ordered the lobster, my mom the fish, and I the duck. Duck was cooked well but was way too fatty. The benefit of the buffet is that they serve a LOT of dishes, and there's a whole table dedicated to seafood and desserts. We enjoyed the caviar, lox, and crab legs. The dessert table was also truly impressive with 12+ types of desserts to choose from. But only ~4-5 of them were truly delicious, and the other desserts were quite bland and lacking. Service was attentive and excellent. Ambiance and view were lovely, but the restaurant is extremely narrow, which made navigation through the buffet difficult. The rest of the hotel was honestly quite drab and empty over the holiday, and I was surprised to learn that it has 5 stars. Tip: all non-alcoholic drinks are included in the price of the buffet. Alcoholic drinks are extra. Would we go back again? Probably not. $365 is a lot, and we can get higher quality tasty food elsewhere although we wouldn't have such a lovely view, and they may not be as plentiful.

Not for the lactose intolerant. Now open for breakfast, LUNCH *AND* DINNER, very glad to write this review of my first dinner, ordering their "Carte Blanche" (prix fix) at $155 per person, $60 wines option. Elegant, and doing all the verbals, but service and execution is not quite there yet. Chef is obsessed with dairy! Barman knows her stuff! Mezcal Negroni is my new fave, and it was perfect. I didn't realize it would be a best-choice to balance all the dairy in the course. Switched to Boulevardier for the mains (duck with creamy gravy and creamy potato risotto), and glad for the bourbon pairing, again with the bitter campari to cut the cream. Table bread was -- you guessed it -- milk bread cube, served with a delightful rock-salted butter, at temperature. When we ran out, the manager personally offered to bring us sliced bread to continue, but it never arrived. While about the service, it's not organized. Sometimes received three descriptions of a course: "up next", "as it arrives" and "just after it arrives". So interesting to hear each of the team's perspective on the same dish. (see below) Delightful presentations of courses. Formal French style, very beautiful plates. Good name recognition, by all staff, but doesn't need to be at every interaction! (see below) But very confusing execution to share first courses, without service plates, so tablecloth soils. Amuses presented in quickfire rapid succession, often while still forking at the previous plate or with fork in mid-air. Over-use of undeveloped heavy cream, and roe. Too much dairy. Tuna (toro) with avocado didn't need yet more caviar, and courses in the tasting all started to be similar: (like Scarpetta on the other side of the wall...) too rich/heavy, creamy, and all soft textures. Dessert course was madeleines (6 for two) and yet another dairy, quenelle of ice cream with seeded honey. ++ heirloom tomato carpaccio. delightful spicy hot oil and herbs. star of the course ++ cauliflower, oyster and roe (instead of clams with corn, to which I'm allergic). delightful texture, and the roe brought a delightful brine to the delicate cauliflower. # duck was rare, sashimi style. needed more cooking. undeveloped and too much heavy cream But the finest of haute cuisine is understated, unobtrusive, and graceful, not "pardon my reach" every few seconds; learn proper standing positions and do not speak. Only the captain speaks, and rarely. (Writing this review with the critical palate from which I used to write and evaluate. In olden days, this would be a two, but my two is most folks' four. I used to reserve my five for the get-on-a-plane-ASAP-and-come-here.)

If you haven't been to the Sunday brunch at Lacroix, you don't know what you are are missing. The best brunch in Philly! You can experience the service for yourselves because everyone feels differently!

Same ingredients. I was hoping to see something new or related to America's 250th. Overall, though, the space was very calm and clean and I enjoyed being there. All the menu items sounded great, too. I'm not sure why I waited so long to try the chicken at Bud and Marilyn's, but better late than never! They serve a LARGE 1/2 chicken. I started with the thigh. I was smitten by the first bite. I was told the chicken is soaked in a buttermilk brine for 24-48 hours - dipped in a buttermilk dredge - covered with their 'secret recipe' seasoned flour - and fried in a 'pressure fryer' that cooks the chicken in 12 minutes. It was perfectly fried - so crispy - the texture and seasoning of the exterior coating was incredible. The chicken was tender and juicy - the thigh was the juiciest - I didn't get to try the drumstick as I was too full! I had the thigh and 1/2 the breast. The breast is my favorite and I savored each large delicious piece I broke apart. It's important to pick up the chicken and eat it by hand - I did cut mine in half for a picture - but didn't use a fork to eat it - you lose the 'panache'of the meal. I didn't use the hot sauce served with the chicken - I brought my own bottle of honey and poured it over the chicken and biscuits. It was heavenly! Which brings me to the Biscuits! The dish comes with 2 large fluffy buttermilk biscuits - they were golden brown on the outside and tender and fluffy on the inside! They had such a rich, buttery flavor. I took several pieces of chicken and layered them on pieces of biscuit, drizzled with honey! It was truly a 5 star fried chicken and biscuit dinner!

Unfortunately, this was by far the worst experience I've had. We had a 7 PM reservation and arrived at 7:15 PM. I acknowledge that we were late and apologized to the host. However, we arrived within the stated grace period. When we checked in, the hostess explained that because we arrived later within the grace period, our 90-minute seating window would still end based on the original reservation time. We acknowledged that and had absolutely no issue with it. What made the experience uncomfortable was how aggressively we were reminded about the time throughout the entire meal. We were reminded at least 5-6 separate times how much time we had left. Comments like "just so you know you have 25 minutes left" and "our next party is coming in 5-10 minutes" made it feel like staff was actively trying to rush us out before our reservation time had even ended. Mind you, we already understood the policy. One reminder would have been enough. Instead, it completely changed the energy of the evening and made us feel unwelcome and pressured to leave. We had originally planned to stay through our reservation and then move to the bar for the live music afterward, but after being repeatedly rushed, we decided to leave entirely and spend the rest of the night elsewhere. The most disappointing part was the interaction with the manager, Eric. Rather than listening or showing any understanding, he immediately became defensive and aggressive. He repeatedly insisted we were "15-20 minutes late," which was simply not true -- we arrived during the stated grace period. The issue was never the policy itself. It was the way we were treated throughout the night. It's unfortunate because this has genuinely been one of my favorite spots in Philly, and I've recommended it to multiple people. I am a vegetarian and they easily accommodated me with advanced notice. They also offer a wine pairing, which we skipped, but know friends have done it and said it was fabulous (but be forewarned... they give full pours so you will be very tipsy!). We saw some couples sharing a single wine pairing and that seemed like a smart idea. It's very hard to get a reservation- on the first of the month they open up reservations for the following month, and they go fast! It's on the second floor of an old townhouse so there are stairs to climb. The first floor is a bar with first come, first serve seating. At the bar they have a different menu with full sized portions. Can't wait to go back and try that out! Highly, highly recommend and I can't wait for an excuse to go back!
