Was told they had amazing banh mi. I bought four and they were okay and very overpriced. The prepared foods should've been refrigerated for health reasons and were not. Cleanliness is definitely not taken serious here. I wonder what their health score is. I don't recommend this establishment.

My sardine banh mi was absolutely spectacular. In terms of sandwich architecture, probably the best banh mi I have ever had. Huge and still only $5 is crazy. My cafe sua day was also great.

Can't believe I have been coming for years and not made a review yet! This is my bad but seeing how they always have a line during lunch hour I know I didn't have to gate keep this place. The banh mi 10/10 for the price of $5 they loaded my sandwich with combo cut of meats and veggies. My go to is the combo, bbq pork, and bbq beef. First one is standard, the bbq pork&beef is sweet savory, and they are hot sandwich (they usually ask if you want it warmed up). Besides the banh mi they also have a variety of Vietnamese desserts, cakes, rice with meat to go, and spring rolls on the side. I love their bitter melon with meat filling soup, it's very light and healthy in the summer, but they only have them occasionally so it's very lucky if you see them in the fridge. Staffs are friendly, they may have some language barrier but they will understand simple English. So just order with number, and modify, if needed, with basic English plus hand gestures haha the food will taste yummy no matter what they put don't worry

We're visiting Houston and read that this place was one of the Bahn Mi shops to visit! Located in Hong Kong mall off of Bellaire Boulevard, it's a tiny shop. They only take cash. Got the combo Bahn Mi and a Coke Zero. Can't believe that a can of coke is $2 but the sandwich is only $5. The bread is crusty, light, and freshly toasted. They don't skimp on the filling. I love the amount of pickle vegetables. I was a little turned off that the lady making my sandwich was looking at her phone and didn't change her gloves

Can't believe I've been going to Hong Kong market for groceries and have not stopped by Alpha Bakery until today. I think I was shunned away some by the lower reviews in the past, but don't let that sway you. I've seen plenty of people recommend this place on reddit and foodie FB groups and I'm super happy to have tried it out to make my own impression. I've had a lot of banh mis since it's one of my top 3 favorite foods and this is now my 2nd favorite banh mi place in Houston from a taste perspective, BUT #1 in terms of overall ranking factoring in value ($5 / banh mi, cash only). My favorite from a taste perspective is Roostar, but that can be double if not triple the price of this place depending on add ons. What I love about this place, service is fast and friendly, bread is toasty fresh and light, the ratio of ingredients were well balanced with no skimping of meat, and as mentioned above, it's cheap! I got their thit nuong (grilled pork), highly recommend. They also sell a bunch of snacks and other goodies. I also love baos and had to cop a box when I saw they made mini ones with eggs and sausage inside. $15 for a box of 9 mini baos. Again, that price game is great. The taste was great too! Moist, full quail egg inside, ratios spot on, would get again! They also sell a fried version, I gotta try that next time. They have a couple tables outside the bakery if you want to eat right away. I'll definitely be coming back!

The banh mis are unmatched. I always get the dac biet aka house special. They are super sweet and will ask you if you want the vegetables separate. One of the best Vietnamese sandwich places in all of Houston.

I absolutely love this hole in the wall. It is one of the best Houston banh mi shops. I don't know how the reviews are not higher. They have amazing banh mi with high quality ingredients. They do not skimp out on the meat and the veggies inside taste super fresh. Their bread is also so good. Besides banh mi they have a huge assortment of other Vietnamese foods and desserts so I would highly recommend coming here. Service is very quick and authentic for sure haha. Most of them do just speak Vietnamese.

I've been coming to Alpha Bakery for a while now and it's on my weekly rotation! The bánh mì here are unbelievable! There is usually a line but they have about 4 people behind the counter making them it's like a little bánh mì factory! This bakery is cash only and all sandwiches are $5 a cost effective way to feed multiple people plus it's quick. Everything is fresh and they bake the bread in store so it's so fluffy and crunchy. The bakery also offers ready made meals/treats that you can grab and go. The staff is always friendly and happy to help. A must try inside of Hong Kong Market!

Banh mi shop that I came across when walking around the mall The prices were unbeatable compared to CA-- $5.00?! I'm there! BBQ Pork Banh Mi - goodness I was going to inhale this sandwich LOL it was so fresh and tasty Combo Cold Cut Pork was also two thumbs up Highly recommend stopping by if you're want Banh Mi!

The nostalgia that people have about Alpha Bakery are usually folks who either grew up in Alief or Houstonians who frequented Hong Kong Mall and fell in love with their banh mi. It pains me to write this but given my less than stellar experiences as of late, I believe their heydey is over. In many ways, Alpha reminds me so much of businesses I'd frequent back in NYC. It's dodgy, family owned, cash only, and has the blessing of the local community. It's also dingy, somewhat unorganized, and even a little cluttered (#1), which are all things I welcome fervently. The fact they have overtaken the space for the now defunct Viet Huong (#2) for storage space feels somewhat hilarious but also very on brand. They've even left the sign up for now. Additionally, they have all the dynamics that make up many Vietnamese bakeries in general: lots of banh mi, a whole variety of baos, and a nice selection of pastries and snacks ready for takeout. On occasion, there's even a small line of people waiting here, which I take as a good sign. But the part where it all kind of falls apart is the food. I haven't enjoyed my banh mis as of late, since the breads felt stale and worse off, the paté, butter, and pickled veg were all very off. I thought the head cheese, cha lua, and deli meats were average for a dac biet, but I was really scratching my head with their xa xiu and thit nuong. Their banh bao was okay and the paté so was also very average. I spotted a somewhat unsightly banh con so (madeleine cookie), which was not a good look (#3) and made me not as interested in getting more stuff. Service wise, it's always going to be somewhere in the middle. Bonus points for speaking any Vietnamese and remember to bring cash as they don't accept credit cards. Seating is limited, it's best to get in and then out. I'll do the latter a little more often now and hope things turn around soon. __________ (#1) To NY'ers reading: straight bodega vibes son. (#2) Viet Huong: https://www.yelp.com/biz/viet-huong-restaurant-houston-2 (#3) No thank you. Nope.

    Banh mi Dac Biet
    Benedict C.

$5 BAMH MI DAC BIET. That's it. That's the review. Honestly, I think the price alone makes this place worthy of 5 stars but the banh mi was actually very good. I've paid double or triple the price for inferior sandwiches. The baguette had a good crunch. They use liver pate and all the classic meats. The vegetables had a good crunch and really complemented the salty and savory flavors of the meats. If I lived in the area I'd come back all the time. Cash only.

    Cold cut banh mi
    Canny F.

Picked up two Banh mi to go. One was filled with the cold cuts and the other was the BBQ meat. Bread is fresh and great. They lightly toast it for you. They also ask if you want the veggies separated so the bread doesn't get soggy - this was such a great idea! So we assembled the sandwich when we got home. The portion size was great as well. You can't complain about the price. It's cash only. The bbq pork looks great but it wasn't. Unfortunately a lot of chunks of fat that you can't even chew and have to spit it out. I was originally skeptical about it being fully cooked too (the color just didn't seem right but to then realize it was a bunch of fat) so I baked it and the color was the same. Apologies for being skeptical. You can't really go wrong with the cold cuts. Is it anything special though? Eh. You definitely get more than you pay for in terms of value. Why? For the price you paid, you get fresh bread with protein and a full belly. Travel a bit north and you get this quality for double the price with less stuffing. I wouldn't go for the BBQ pork or maybe ask them to chop it into smaller pieces? When you take a bite, the entire piece of pork follows and you are left with minimal meat for your next few bites unless you pull it apart with your teeth and fingers - this is what I did to make sure I had meat in every bite vs my partner just had bread bites haha. But then we realized it's the parts with a lot of fat that does this. I guess that's why people pay more for marbled meat? They also put a lot of mayo so you might want to tell them to put less. He puts mayo on majority of his dishes and likes mayo yet complained about the abundance of mayo so I guess that's considered too much? Overall, above average for the bread, a tad below average for the BBQ pork and dead on average for the cold cuts.

A bounty of fresh ingredients and meats to make your perfect sandwich

The filling is placed in a pan and then a thin layer of batter made with tumeric and coconut milk yellow batter is poured on top. You wrap the lettuce around the bánh xèo/bánh khọt and dip it in the fish sauce. I got the bánh khọt and the bò né. Bánh khọt is like a mini, thicker version of bánh xèo and came with nine pieces. Their bánh khọt was crispy, sweet and savory, and went well with the fish sauce. Although the portions initally look small, they are very filling. The bò né was filling and sizzling when it came out. It also came with a side of salad. The meat was tender. I really liked the bánh khọt and would definitely come back for them. I couldn't have been more wrong. Xeo Yum (#1) as it turns out is one of the most legit Vietnamese places in Midtown serving up some of the city's best banh xeo and banh khot. Located inside of a Food Hall (#2) in the back corner, they have low-key become a destination and without question, the most popular stall in the entire place. The fan base didn't happen overnight but is a direct result of Chef Cuong Nguyen's commitment to quality Vietnamese fare. Banh Xeo is their signature item, which is also known as a sizzling crepe or pancake made of rice flour, tumeric, and coconut milk. The banh xeo holds well, is perfectly crispy, and is nicely stuffed with an assortment of beans sprouts, shrimp, and some of the best grilled pork belly I've had. Another specialty item that doesn't get enough mention is their banh khot, which is similar but has a mini muffin / cupcake like appearance made in a specialty cast iron mold. This version is wonderfully crispy and pairs perfectly with fresh greens and fish sauce with some funk. It is my favorite item here. Some have argued they also serve one of the best bo ne (#3), the Vietnamese version of steak and eggs served in a skillet. The chunks of beef are nice and tender with just a tad of char, served with two fried eggs, and a banh mi baguette with a mix of butter and spare. Normally I think of spam or sausage included with the meats, but Chef Cuong's spin is with cherry tomatoes. It's a different approach and I'm not mad at it. Folks not looking for this can shoot for bo luc lac, aka shaking beef, which is also recommended. The staff here is sweet, hard-working, and very friendly. They also make a mean Vietnamese coffee and offer free iced self-serve water. The prices are what I would expect in a Midtown food hall, and there's plenty of seating. Anyone checking out the food hall need to make Xeo Yum as part of their eating itinerary. __________ (#1) A play on the Vietnamese sizzling crepe, Banh "xeo" and yum" (#2) Previously the Conservatory and now Stestí Food Hall. When I arrived there was nobody dining in the restaurant, that was a bit worrying, but I figured it was a bit early for the dinner crowd and late for the lunch crowd. Food & Drink - 4.5* First up was the noodles, I enjoyed them, but I wouldn't say the hype I'd heard about from some others was there. They had nice flavor, but there just wasn't anything "special." 3.5* Then it was on to the crawfish, and my oh my. Superb, the flavor is delicious and unique. This more than made up for the noodles dish. The potato and corn was good too. Service - 5* Solid. When I first arrived the owner was quietly reading a newspaper and eating his own lunch. He paused to greet me and advised that I could sit anywhere. He provided water and adequate time to determine what I wanted to order. The food came out quickly and he checked in a few times to make sure everything was ok. As time went by, the crowd of folks showing up increased quite a bit and he still managed to check in on tables consistently. Pricing - 4* This is where it was odd. Always subjective but I found the noodles to be overpriced for not only the size but what I felt was a pretty simple dish. The crawfish on the other hand was priced very competitively and made up for the overpriced noodles. I provided pics of the menu for someone to make their own assessment but in general I thought many of the dishes were pricier than they probably should be. The flavor is fantastic, the pricing is good, the size of them were solid. There are a couple of other dishes I may try on the next visit. I also got the chicken vermicelli just as a classic. But every single item in the bun bo hue platter was jawdroppingly good. I never had anything like it before. I didn't know there were vietnamese dishes that utilized mochi flour and now I can never go back. Every single item was so good. The mochi was cooked so perfectly as every bite was so chewy and soft with no hard clumps at all. The meat that came with them as well were so sweet and tender. The vermicelli plate was awesome too as you can make a wrap with the lettuce and veggies and rice noodles and they all come together to mouthwatering perfection. I found a new spot to hyperfixate on whenever I come to houston.

My favorite appetizers (in order): Banh beo chen, Banh ram it, banh bot loc, egg rolls, crystal dumplings. Personally I wasn't a fan of the paste-y texture of the banh nam but that is a personal preference! Service is not the most hospitable but very quick. We were reseated after spotting a cockroach under our table. But even so I would come back to have this amazing food any day.

My friends ordered the filet mignon and the chicken and they were equally as impressed! I ordered the espresso mousse for dessert which comes out in the shape of a coffee bean. Cuteeee and perfect! This place didn't disappoint and it is a must visit.

This is a higher end fine dining restaurant so you should expect the portion sizes and price to be pretty comparable to a lot of other finer dining restaurants. Overall the food's flavor was fantastic. I ordered the king salmon clay pot. I thought the salmon was so tasty! They added pepper and sauce to the salmon - It was tender and flavorful and paired nicely with white rice. The quail (not pictured below) also was super flavorful and was cooked so well it tasted like beef. The soup was also light and refreshing, similar to a west lake soup. It was thicker consistency and had cilantro and chucks of lobster. The drinks served were also super balanced. We ordered the mojito and the dragon fruit cocktail. The mojito was the right balance between minty and sweet with just a hint of alcohol flavor. For the dragon fruit cocktail, it was very fruity, on the sweeter side but not overpowering and was topped with egg whites to give it a little bit of frothiness. I will say, we are slightly underdressed to enter this establishment. Everything seemed so luxurious and many people were in formal business wear! Keep this in mind if you go! There is a parking deck right next to the location as well, both self parking and valet!
