In my opinion, Alpha Bakery is not the best banh mi shop in Houston, but it is one of the good ones if you're craving for banh mi and need it right away. They have an open kitchen in the back where they make mass amount of the baguette bread in the back. They also sell other sorts of Vietnamese small dishes for you to take home. They toast the baguette a little bit so it would be nice and warm prior cutting it open to stuff it with whatever you ordered. If you're in a rush for dinner and don't feel like getting Western fast food, stop by Alpha Bakery and they will make 8 sandwiches to feed your whole family in no time. You can always pick up other Vietnamese delicacy and sweet desserts there while you're at it. One of my favorite Banh mi place in Houston. Why? Because their are not skimpy on the Pate and buttery mayo. I like my buttery mayo to ooze out of my Banh mi while eating. Worse, the store did not practice COVID-19 social distancing and some ladies were working in the kitchen did not wear face masks. This review is for the Alpha cafe attached to the sandwich shop. BEWARE, CASH ONLY. We didn't see the sign at the cash register until half way through our meal. Our party of eight ordered pan fried rice cake, grilled pork rice plate, beef short ribs rice plate, spring rolls, chicken pho, fried Butter chicken wings, and Hue's spicy beef pho. None of the dish really stood out, below average at best. But it did satisfied my hunger but no one else. My sister-in-law ordered the Hue's spicy beef pho. What was placed in front of her made her gag. There were pork ankle and pork blood cubes in her beef soup. She flagged down the waitress and ask why there were nasty pork blood cubes and pork ankles in the menu described BEEF pho. The waitress in her broken English insisted that Hue's spicy beef included pork and pork blood as standards. I found the hybrid pho interesting and traded my beef short ribs rice plate for her pho. The Hue's was not spicy and the two beef slices were tough. The pork blood cubes were bland and tasteless. The cube had a texture similar to semi soft tofu. The pork ankle was fatty and chewy. I was full but not satisfied. My sister-in-law said the short beef ribs sucked and ate only the rice and egg. The other six was just plain mad. This was definitely the most popular place inside the shopping center. The packed ready to go goodies of Vietnamese delicacies looked tempting.. but we were excited about the Bahn Mi sandwiches. The auntie working on the other side seemed to be extremely bothered. Not sure if it was the language barrier.. I asked for pâté with my sandwich and she gave me this look like she wanted to murder me. She was so irritated. I tried to hide my fear by excessively bowing and saying thank you. She made it so fast and stuffed it with a lot of meat and veggies despite her demeanor. The owner is Phillip very personable.. he mentioned they've been running the business for 27 years. Overall the sandwich was probably the best I had in a while, better than Lee's sandwich chain.. it's tasted like I was in Vietnam and got it from a street vendor. And I mean that in the best way possible. Despite a lot of negative reviews. Gotta think they've been open for almost three decades, they got to be doing something right. Alpha is hands down my favorite Banh Mi shop. This is a small, very obscure store in the Hong Kong plaza. It's been there for quite a while and for good reason. For as long as I've known, they offer the best banh mi in town. Although the sandwich is not overly stuffed as some places in town, the meat is very rich and overall the sandwich is very flavorful. Absolutely terrible service but what would you expect from this kind of store. The banh mi is fine, though the quality of the meat is okay. I ordered ahead of time, but when I arrived they didn't have it ready. That's fine and I didn't mind waiting, and the owner said that my order was coming soon and I just needed to wait. I waited for 20 minutes just to find out that the owner didn't even put in my order, and that the banh mi was never going to come. In other words, he lied to my face and said my order was put into the system. He made me wait 20 minutes, rather than just admitting his mistake of forgetting to put in my order, and doing it right there and then. WAY better than ANY sandwich place in California on any given day. The french bread used for the sandwich is fresh and extremely soft on the inside. They do not short change you on meat or vegetables. And they definitely don't skimp on the butter/mayo? NO clue what that is but I'm sure it's extremely fattening. Yum. The sandwich is definitely packed and worth every penny. They do have other kinds of Vietnamese deli food and desserts but I have no clue what it is. Not every place serves both pate and bo in the same sandwich, but they do it hardcore at Alpha Bakery. All of the meat is fresh and for your dac biet,you have a choice of getting the pork belly or the headcheese (gio thu). I mix it up and get 2 with the headcheese and 2 with the pork belly. I debated over 4 or 5 stars because the women who work here are RUDE, yes, all caps, RUDE. But the sandwiches are so damn, good, I don't care, the hassle is worth it. It's just the right amount of crumble without falling apart. 4/5 Mayo - I love the mayo here which is more of a buttery texture than the the white mayo. I think they use tons of egg yolk in ratio to oil here. 3/5 Pate - I thought the pate was ok here. I light my pate a bit softer. 5/5 Head Cheese - I love pork and I love fat. Their head cheese is just the right around! 5/5 Cha Lua - can't really go wrong with Cha Lua anywhere you go. 4/5 Sliced Pork - Tender and flavorful 4/5 Veggies - The daikon/carrots were pickled well and the all the veggies were very fresh. I haven't tried their BBQ pork sandwich, but my brother said that it was great because it was flavorful and not fatty like some other spots. What I've known this place for is the combination banh mi. I've been coming here for over 10 years and the quality has remained the same. The quality cuts of meats, the pate and butter, the pickled carrots and daikon, the fresh cucumber and cilantro, all on a fresh baguette ties everything together perfectly. I'm giving Alpha Bakery a 2 star. I usually get the grilled pork sandwiches. They are good with enough meat and vegetables. They toast the bread and then fill it with the meat of choice and the veggies. I went today and none of the workers were wearing a mask, neither was the owner, who usually is at the register. What irks me the most is the lady making the sandwiches. I tell her what sandwiches I want and she replies to me in Vietnamese. I don't speak Vietnamese so I tell her again in English. I tell her I don't speak English and she responds again in Vietnamese until the owner looks over and asks me what I want. This not the first time it happened. Customer service is horrible. Love this deli /bakery!!! The bread is so very yummy! Could be a little more tidy! However it's not pricey and the staff was very kind.

The last few times I've come have been really disappointing. The bread is different now, smaller/thinner than before and not as fluffy. It's STILL hard to get them to toast bread properly. And the meats in my last few visits have been dry and rubbery. I still believe Alpha makes some of the best banh mi here, but just not consistently enough for a 5/5. It's the same way with Nguyen Ngo and many other older shops. I'll still come for their deli goods but skip the banh mi. Better to go to Simply Viet for consistent, well-made sandwiches. read more

First off, I always get my banh mi from Alpha Bakery every time I go to hk4. It's always packed whenever I go, but the line moves really fast. I always get the banh mi xiu mai every time. That's how much I love it. The vegetables are always fresh, bread is fresh,..everything is freshfreshfresh. I love how the xiu mai is always juicy and tender and I finish the sandwich in less than 15 minutes. I'm giving it three stars because they gave me the wrong kind. I asked for xiu mai and they gave me the combination meat so of course I'm unhappy about that but by that time I was already home and hungry. I went again most recently and ordered the xiu mai. Came home and guess what? I got chicken which tasted dry and and stringy. Our family's favorite Banh Mi place! The bread is yummy and soft. They pack the sandwich so that it's worth it. The thit nguoi and thit nuong is both so delicious! We haven't tried the others but I'm sure they're good too. The ladies are so sweet and nice. The sandwiches are made very quickly. We also enjoy their nem chua.
