Rob (the owner), who is a 3rd generation contractor, met us promptly after our initial inquiry. Not only was his project plan comprehensive and pricing competitive but we just got a really good "member of the family" vibe from him. It's such a leap of faith to trust someone with an asset like a house but we are so glad we took that leap with Rob. The project included flooring, every inch of electrical, modified interior framing, insulation, complete kitchen, complete master bath reconfiguration, half bath refresh, sheet rock, trim, painting and the occasional psychotherapy session when we encountered a few surprises along the way. Rob was patient, kind, thorough and had a crazy eye for detail. One of the things that really set him apart from other general contractors we've worked with in the past is the quality of subcontractors (electrical, plumbing, tile, etc) and how closely he manages those critical resources. If he says countertops are going in on a Thursday, they are going in on a Thursday. On one hand, the thought of going through another remodel gives me PTSD since I'm ready to just enjoy our home without making a dozen decisions per day for several months. But on the other hand, we are going to miss seeing him so often and will make him our first (and ONLY) call when it's time for the next project.

I had heard horror stories about contractors in Tahoe, but after meeting Rob from Alpine Builders, I knew I was in good hands. He immediately understood my vision and offered thoughtful suggestions without ever making me feel pressured to spend more. Rob was upfront, transparent, and genuinely helpful throughout the entire process. He passed along contractor discounts, directed me to the right places to source materials, and managed everything seamlessly. The Transformation: Since I live and work in Los Gatos (about four hours away), I couldn't be on-site often, which meant I needed a contractor I could trust to handle everything. Rob and his team took care of: New paint, inside and out New flooring throughout the entire house (goodbye, carpet!) He would spot minor issues (paint chips, overspray, etc.) before I even noticed and ensure they were fixed. Problem-solving & creativity - My house had some design challenges: a weird angled ceiling in the upstairs bathroom, a tiny kitchen, and some funky light fixtures. Rob worked patiently and creatively to make the best use of my space. Communication & updates - Since I couldn't always be on-site, Rob sent updates, pictures, and confirmations along the way to make sure he was executing exactly what I wanted. Professional & clean crew - His crews kept the worksite tidy, which I really appreciated. Goes above and beyond - He even worked to get one room finished early so I'd have a place to stay if I came up while the rest of the house was under construction. Things to Keep in Mind (True for Any Contractor): Some things go fast (demo, painting, etc.), while others take longer, depending on trades like plumbing and electrical. Delays happen due to material availability and scheduling different crews. The process has natural lulls - Some weeks, there was a lot happening at once, and other times things stalled a bit, partly because I was busy with work and kids and couldn't always stay on top of it. Rob was always responsive and transparent, keeping me in the loop at every step. Final Verdict: I highly recommend Alpine Builders if you're looking for a contractor in Tahoe. My house has been completely transformed, and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. It's said that you can tell the true character of a person not by their actions when things go…read moresmoothly, but by how they carry themself when there are unexpected challenges. Such was our experience with Mark Tanner... We contracted with MTC to build our house in Martis Camp in early 2014 and ground was broken in early spring 2014. Construction was scheduled to last 12-to-14 months with the house being completed summer 2015. Work progressed slightly behind schedule through spring 2015 when the wheels fell off of the cart. Long story short, the wrong stone flooring was installed throughout a majority of the house. We notified MTC at the start of the tile installation that we believed the wrong product was being installed, but were assured that it was the correct product. We continued questioning the tile until Tanner finally conceded that it was, in fact, the wrong product. Tanner than spent fall and winter 2015 blaming everyone else for the error including, our designer, the tile supplier, the quarry, and us, and did nothing to remedy it. By this time we'd already paid him 95% of the contract value and were anxious to get in the house. In a last ditch effort, we even offered to keep the flooring as-is for a small price concession (less than 1.5% of the contract value and 30% of the cost to replace it), but Tanner refused. Months went by with no action. We ended up retaining an attorney in Spring 2016 to get him to complete the house. Fortunately, we retained detailed records including emails and meeting notes to substantiate that MTC was informed of the mistake or we would have ended up in litigation. He finally ordered the correct tile and we were on schedule to have it replaced in summer 2016. Shortly after the correct tile arrived, we were informed that there wasn't enough to complete the house - MTC had shorted the order to save a few bucks and needed to order additional tile. It would take another 3-4 months for the tile to arrive with no assurance it would match what was already on-site. Sure enough, when the additional tile arrived it didn't match. The color and texture were different than the prior replacement order. We chose very monochrome basalt that was uniform both texture and color. Working with his site foreman, we hand picked through the tiles and chose the closest matches. These were installed in less conspicuous locations (closets, pantry, areas that would be covered by area rugs, etc.). Finally, in late February 2017 the house was ready to occupy - 34 months after construction began and 20 months after the scheduled completion date. Shortly after move-in, we supplied MTC with a new construction punch list of approximately 40 fairly minor items (paint scuffs, a damaged light fixture shade, alarm sensor not working, incorrect shower handle trim, gate was sagging and weather damaged, etc.). We also discovered some rain gutters called out in the architectural plans were never installed. We ended up paying additional money to have the gate changed and rain gutters/ heat tape installed over and above the contract amount to get them done before winter 2017. Eight months later, and the other minor punch list items were still not completed. We had had enough of working with Tanner and decided to sell the house. During the sale escrow process, a few additional items were discovered during the buyers' home inspection (missing door sweeps in showers, erosion under one corner of the patio, faulty circuit breaker in the master bathroom, etc.) - nothing major. Tanner refused to remedy these issues. It took the intervention of the sales broker to coerce Tanner to remedy these during escrow. I'll be the first to admit that ours is a first-world problem. To the folks who have successfully used MTC - good for you. Building and maintaining a vacation home in Truckee requires a long-term relationship with someone you trust to maintain and repair your home. We hopefully represent the minority of homeowners where problems of this magnitude cropped up during construction. If you're fortune enough to be building a home, ask yourself what type of person you want to entrust with the honor of helping fulfill your family's dream. We made the mistake of not asking for references from clients where construction problems arose and chose poorly. To be clear, MTC has some very diligent and talented employees. The issue we encountered came from the top. To this day, Tanner has never apologized for the mistake, didn't bother attending the occupancy walk-through, never checked-in with us after move-in, and missed numerous update calls that he scheduled via email. We've been told that he blames us for the mistake - basically forcing him to fulfill his obligations as the general contractor - and is, "mad," at us. At the end of the day, all we have is our integrity, character, and reputation. Everyone makes mistakes - it's how we choose to deal with them when a person's true character shows through.

John & Stephanie took me through the entire project with such professionalism & care, I feel truly lucky to have found them. I was going to do the roof & the deck but John told me that the roof didn't need to be completely re-done and only 1 of my 2 decks needed work. He could have just "sold" me the new roof & both decks but was honest in his evaluation of my property. His integrity is beyond reproach. I ended up replacing only my top deck and ended up doing 2 bathrooms instead (along with replacing the necessary tiles on my roof). Since I am in a HOA, John worked with the association to get the proper decking & color to comply with their guidelines. It was seamless. He replaced the top deck completely and secured everything on the 2nd deck. He made it safe & sound and good for years to come. I took 2 bathrooms down to the studs. Thank goodness I did since dry rot was found. John kept me up to date and let me know of any hiccups. As others have mentioned, he helped me with suggestions that ranged from where to look for tile, toilets, etc to helping me with suggestions for the bathrooms. He was patient when I would change my mind on things (i.e. I decided on one color for the bathrooms but it looked just awful once it was on the walls so I picked out a new color and they repainted them for me). The work of his team is extraordinary! I had wainscoting put on the walls - the tile "flows" and the gentleman who installed it is a true artist. They laid plastic on all the carpets to avoid dirt and grime to take care of the rest of the house. As I was doing this, unfortunately I had 2 floods due to the snow from this past season. He discovered it one morning and instantly went into action to drain the water from the house, find where it was coming from & got to work fixing the problem (draining the water, opening the walls, putting industrial fans in the rooms). They were both insurance issues and Holm stepped up and helped me with that too! Talking to the adjuster, getting me separate invoices for the work, etc. This unexpected fiasco could have been a nightmare!! But John came to my rescue and stepped up to help. It was completely unexpected and not in the scope of work that I had contracted with them but he had my back and I can't begin to tell you how much his efforts, help & kindness saved the day. They are busy! I did have to wait "my turn" and that took about 4 months but well worth the wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is a reason they have a waiting list, their work is beyond reproach! They are up front with their pricing. Nothing is ambiguous - no hidden fees. They will bend over backwards to help their client. I feel so lucky to have come across them. I will definitely be using them again for any future projects. I can't thank John & Stephanie enough - incredible people, phenomenal work & an A+ company! Incline is lucky to have you guys.
