We had great service from Alpine Stove & Chimney in getting our gas fireplace back in service. We called in the morning and the service tech was at our door 20 minutes later. They quickly varied issues with the thermocouple and thermopile. The tech had the parts on his truck and changed them out. Then he did a full on service and cleanup of everything. It now works and looks like new, all included in the flat rate repair. We did not have to pay anything up front. They sent us a bill by email for payment by credit card or check, trusting their customers to make payment. This is a refreshing approach to business in Truckee. read more

Avoid this company. We were long-time users of Alpine Stove, for the most part they were ok. Last year they left our blower completely dis-mantled and if I wanted to replace it, the cost was going be $800.00. We didn't need the blower so we declined. It was this year that this company blew me away with incompetence. We scheduled to have an annual cleaning on a working gas fireplace. We were not at the property so there service tech entered and supposedly serviced the fireplace. We never heard back until we received the invoice two weeks later. The cost was almost $300.00 for the service which they told me the cost and I agreed to pay; however, it was an email along with the invoice that was very disturbing, they indicated a potential problem and they completely dismantled the fire place. They wanted me to pay an additional $1,000 on top of the $300.00 to turn the gas fireplace-place back on. They decided without notification to dismantle my working fireplace. When I requested they turn my fireplace back on to the way it was working when we left until the holidays, the owner Craig Morris commented since "I'm not going to make any more money" you can figure it out your self. We are going into winter and have my family coming up. It seems like to me they are extorting customers that they know are not at their house at time of inspection. Perhaps the best business I've worked with here in Truckee. Almost 2 years ago I closed on what is likely as close to my "dream house" as could find, after a 2 year search to get off of upper Skislope (40+ feet of snow just in February 2019; seriously overwhelming). The previous owner had converted the 2 fireplaces to gas log sets and I wanted to go back to wood in one of them. Alpine had done the gas sets and my (also spectacular) agents Christy Curtis and Jane Sheppard suggested them. I met Craig, the owner, and was very impressed with his knowledge and very thorough professionalism. I wanted to retain the wonderful hand-wrought doors/screens and Craig designed a system to install the stove insert and keep the doors. I built and ran a service business for 37 years and my own perspective was through knowledge and communication, and performance, one earned trust of clients and their confidence that they'd receive the highest quality of service. Craig absolutely excells at this. The 2 man crew that spent the good part of a day removing the gas set and installing my stove worked as though they were the owners themselves. The care they exhibited in every aspect of the job, protecting my home and the meticulous install, was as good as it gets. Craig hires and trains exemplary professionals. This week my system ceased drawing and smoke backed up into the house, setting off the alarms in impossible locations for me to disable them (I have a pretty wrecked spine from playing hard for too long and my balance is so gone that I cannot be on a ladder). I opened enough doors and windows to evacuate the smoke and then called Alpine. Dan answered the phone and after discussing the issue (we both agreed that the spark arrestor screen at the top of the chimney was likely clogged) Dan told me that, unfortunately, they were booked solid a month out. Wow the luck! (I wasn't expecting that they were just sitting there waiting for me to call and have work for them, but a month was rather disappointing). Dan told me he'd find a place to shoehorn me in and also put me on the stand-by list. Fair enough. An hour or so later Dan called and told me he thought of a temporary fix that would allow me to burn, and then they'd return after winter and engineer a proper permanent solution. He asked if I would be home the rest of the day. Jeeze, you're gonna be here today?! Sure enough, a bit later the crew arrived and did a quick temporary fix. Again, the guys who came to my home were super polite and knew well what they were doing. A bit later Dan called me and told me no charge for the visit. Wow! This year we had the hearth rebuilt and Alpine Stove removed the wood stove and then rebuilt the flue and replaced the stove after the rock work was done. That individual was pressuring me to upgrade my stove and replace the chimney immediately. Before doing so, I started doing some substantial research. I also called Craig at Alpine Stove & Chimney. Craig came out and inspected my stove and chimney. He did a thorough job and took the time to explain everything he was doing and seeing. Craig did not try to upsell me on a new stove or scare me into having unnecessary work done. He gave me a very well thought out set of options based upon the age of my chimney and stove. I truly felt that he had my best interests in mind as we went through the discussion. This was a very different experience from another chimney sweep that I had used. Subsequently I also talked with several other stove suppliers in the area, most whom echoed Craig's opinions. Craig also suggested an immediate modification to the chimney cap that would improve draft problems that I had been having. This was very inexpensive, and Craig came out and did the work within a few days. This modification completely fixed the issues that I had been having for years. Outstanding Company...truly a rarity in the Tahoe Basin! I set an appointment with this company about 3 weeks ago for annual service of my gas fireplace. They said they'd be out today between 9:00 and 10:00. With the work ethic I've experienced in this ski resort town (2 speeds...slow, stop, or "Dude, I forgot...") I figured I'd be fortunate if they even showed up. I was beyond impressed when Naomi called yesterday to confirm my service appointment (that hasn't happened in the almost 12 years I've been in Tahoe) and even more so when Chris pulled into my driveway promptly at 9:02. Chris was extremely professional and competent. He fixed my heater quickly, left the work area as clean as when he got there, and the price quoted was half that of the competition. They've got the whole "customer service and satisfaction thing" nailed. There are 2 very happy Siamese cats and a happy wife in my toasty cabin. These guys are awesome! Our chimney cap was crushed by snow during last seasons snowfall. The team at Alpine Stove were the only people to return a phone call and also identified the type of cap simply based on the type of chimney we had. I'll repeat for all of the other places we contacted, they were the ONLY stove/chimney company to return a phone call. Craig answered the phone every time I called but one. And on that one time, he called me back within three minutes with apologies that he was "with a customer." We had a gasket loose on our wood stove (poorly installed by some of Alpine's competition), and Craig had a guy up there three days later, on the day we wanted, in the time frame we needed, and completed the job two hours before the deadline for the next tenants to arrive at our rental. He did it all without us even being there (they let themselves in), and called me when he was done and emailed a receipt. Oh, he cost $25 less than the guy who did the crappy install the first time. Alpine Stove was called because of a smoke issue in my upstair neighbors apt. Turns out the spark arrestor screen was clogged on top of my pipe, this was to the date, 2 months after having a chimney sweep done by them. Dan told me that they were here no longer than 15 mins, he inspected the pipe from the top and cleaned the screen. The bill was 175, what is that hourly? yeah that's what I thought. So I called and talked to Dan knowing that wasn't the right thing to do to a customer. He reduced it to 125 for a 15 min screen cleaning. Not the best customer service or price. I understand minimum charges, and things. Even if it was a half hour job 250$ an hour to run a ladder, screw driver, and wire brush is RAPE! Also, adding to my one star review, I had to call and leave a message twice with no call returned. So i called again on Monday to discuss the extortion going on. For these BOGUS rates I would never recommend this company, I tried to give them the opportunity to make it "right" and they just pussy footed around and reduced the bill slightly. P.S. when they did the stove cleaning and replaced the door gasket they didn't make sure it was sealing properly, still can see light through the seal, if i was a true complainer I would have called them on that but I have just dealt with it. read more

We had what turned out to be a small chimney fire that burnt the paint off the stove pipe. Called and left a message on a Saturday and Craig promptly returned the call and made an appointment for Monday at 9AM Craig and Robert arrived at 9AM Monday. Stove pipe and stove cleaned and thoroughly inspected. They re-caulked roof-pipe seam AND touched up outside metal chimney. Craig explained what they did and found. He also some guidelines on inspection intervals which are very reasonable. He will replace stove pipe section later this spring. Cost was as agreed and in my opinion very reasonable. And no mess. My experience with Craig at Alpine Stove was a great example of outstanding customer service. I got three estimates on a new fireplace for my cabin in Tahoe and decided to go with Alpine Stove because Craig was the most engaged and provided me the most information about my fireplace options on my project. My project was a DIY fireplace installed into a corner open hearth fireplace. Craig helped me understand the county permits needed and best methods for installation. Craig was always quick to respond to my many questions I had during this project. For me Alpine Chimney was the worst experience EVER. This was a while back, 2010 I believe. I had to replace a chimney on one of the fireplaces. The guy (I believe owner) from Alpine chimney came over and his asking price was 40K. Yes, $40,000 with four zeros, and 2 weeks of work with walls coming down etc. When I said no thank you he went to the town or Truckee and reported that my other fireplace, not even the one I asked him to look at, was not up to the code. Long story short I will not let these guys inside my house, let along doing work with them. read more
