Hands down best breakfast spot in Chicago. Besides the fact that it's family owned they have great servers. The food is fast with a smile. Me and my husband go to alps a lot and the owners are always there and the nicest people always greeting you when you walk thru the door. There food is yummy I am yet to have a bad dish...there skillets are my favorite. Portion size is huge! I can never finish a plate. Not to mention super quick. Food comes out so fast!! When we moved into the neighborhood we had all of one opportunity to dine at the Alps. Then it closed, and there was much weeping and gnashing of teeth. It seemed like the old diners closed one by one after we moved in--though I don't think it was cause and effect. Vosnos Restaurant and Pancake House... the Blue Angel (I think that was the name) on Irving Park Rd., and so on. All gone. What was a hipster to do if he wanted a simple breakfast of bacon, eggs, and pancakes on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Losing the Alps was a real heartbreaker though. Thank goodness it came back. Placed in a counter seat on a busy Saturday morning. Waited 15 minutest for coffee and 35-40 minutes for my omelet and toast. When it arrived it was warm, not blazing hot, suggesting to me it had been cooling on a counter somewhere. I had always seen this place but never stopped in due to it being located on busy intersection. A client of mine scheduled a business breakfast there. What I didn't know was they have free parking in the back. The place has been remodeled, looks great, it's bright and clean. They have an updated menu and the spinach omelette was very good. I live in the neighborhood and wanted to take out of town guest for breakfast. My guest had the breakfast special 2 french toast, and two eggs with 4 sausage link. I think her french toast was perfect. I had the two pancakes, with two eggs and 4 bacon special. Oh let me not forget the hash brown potatoes. It was quite a bit of food for the $8.19 each. The beverages was how the ticket for two got to be right at 24.00. Next time I will split my breakfast. It was a lot of food. The service was excellent, and the place is newly remodeled. You can't go wrong with breakfast @ the Alps. This is the usual breakfast stop for my wife and I. Family friendly and food comes out of the kitchen pretty quick. I'd give this place a 0. I was catching up with a friend who I have not seen in 6 months and meeting her baby for the first time. The owner actually asked us to leave because they needed the table. We were there just over an hour. He said "we have to make money, we need your table." Needless to say we were shocked. He literally kicked us out of our table! We were paying customers who both had entire breakfasts. Then he actually pulled the table away while My friend was trying to strap her 6 month old daughter into her car seat, hitting it. This was after the waitress spilled hot coffee on both of us. I will never return and have never been treated this way before. read more

Quite possibly the best French Toast I have ever had. My grandmother and I stopped in for some breakfast and it was delicious and it had HUGE portions. I'd definitely recommend the French Toast. He needed the table, and they were busy. Wait, what?! We were paying customers who both were having full breakfasts. It's not like we were taking up a huge table and only drinking coffee. We got there at 10, and this was happening a little after 11. This was after we had OK food (again, nothing you can't get from hundreds of other restaurants in Chicago) and the waitress spilled hot coffee on both of us. To top it off, they were literally pulling our table away as I was trying to strap my 6 month old into her carseat, and hit her seat nearly knocking it over. I supported this neighborhood place long enough. I will never, ever go back and would never recommend it. I was stunned at how we were treated. Best breakfest/brunch spot in my neighborhood. I have been here twice and have been every satisfied. The first time I came I had the breakfast burrito with chorizo with rice and beans and it was really delicious and filling. On the second visit I had the hobo skillet and that was very good as well with lots of veggies and meat and hash browns. I have had Feta Cheese Omelette with Tomatoes and Onions, Denver Omelette, Spanish Omelette and Corned Beef Omelette. I liked all omelette that I had there. Good diner option for the Old Irving neighborhood. Cleaner than the Golden Nugget chains this place seems to be a neighborhood favorite. I definitely need to give this place a second chance given that I didn't even select a meal based on the restaurant namesake. I was trying to be healthy and ordered the lox platter. Probably not the wisest choice as the salmon was just okay and a little stringy. I probably should have gone with pancakes. Service and seating was prompt and friendly. This place is not fancy, but it is delicious. My husband and I share the Mexican omelette and usually the two of us don't always finish the whole plate. There is a LOT of food on the plate! Their skillets are not great (ask for the hashbrowns to be well done and let them know you are prepared to wait, otherwise you will be eating near raw potatoes, veggies and over easy eggs.) The patty melt was good, lacked seasoning however but that is a quick fix. The skillet I was told was good, but bland as well.
