I was recommended by my cousins to take my car here. My car didn't start Monday morning and I called Alvin if I was able to tow my car there, they could but they wouldn't be able to work on it till Wednesday. Fair enough and I appreciate the honesty. Since battery was still under warranty at dealer, I went there first. Only to have my car die again, this time at a gas station. Called Alvin's again and they were able to see me. Mike tried to check my car but it wouldn't start and he said it's my battery, not my alternator. He recommends I take it back to my dealer as he saw it was still under warranty. My 2018 BMW M3 displayed a warning that called for the battery to be checked. Stopped by Alvin's (without an appt) and spoke to Mike and shared the details. Mike dropped what he was doing and performed a battery check and suggested I drive around for a bit to fully charge the battery If the warning comes back bring the car in for further diagnostics. They've fixed our brakes when the dealer did a shoddy job and do our scheduled maintenance too. I do a lot of work on cars and trucks and recently I found myself in a position where I needed an engine replacement. Alvin's came highly recommended to me by a person who has been in the automotive trades for decades. His recommendation was excellent. Alvin's is a family-owned business and it is a great shop. CUSTOMER SERVICE My very first experience with Alvin's was with Mike their business operations manager. He was exceptionally professional, right down to the respectful and positive way he addressed me. Repair estimates were provided before work was started, and he kindly asked for approvals before starting work. I was especially impressed that he asked lots of questions about what was wrong with the car, and he was engaged and a good listener concerning the issues, and my own hunches about what was wrong. Before the first wrench was turned, I was already pleased with the shop. COMMUNICATION No layers of voice answering, being put on hold and unavailable service advisors. Alvin's answers the phone every time and he provided regular updates on progress. I found that to be impressive. His communication was clear and efficient, and most important, he kept me apprised of the repair strategy (my issue was complex) and always sought my input concerning the work. TECHNICAL SKILL The diagnostic work was excellent. My own tests indicated that a cylinder head issue existed, which is a very serious job. Against my guidance, the Techs at Alvins worked the problem and determined that a brand new fuel injector installed in the car was the problem. A job costing thousands of dollars was reduced to a minor part replacement because of their good diagnostic work. Other conditions were found and corrected, and no unnecessary work was pushed. I came away with a high degree of trust in their skills. VALUE The price came in at the estimated cost, and the labor rate was far less than dealership prices. FACILITY Alvin's has two facilities, one in San Jose, the other in Milpitas -- which is the one I used. It's located in an automotive trades plaza directly adjacent to the Milpitas Police headquarters, a safe area. My first impression was that the shop was clean, spacious and organized. There were lots of cars parked, awaiting work. I went to Alvin's for an engine replacement and they were well equipped to handle the job. One other comment: I write reviews to point out businesses that do great work, or otherwise to help people like me to avoid bad experiences. My car broke down at my work. The workers were able to figure the problem very quickly and even made it cost effective for my wife and I. The staff explained to us what happened to car and showed us how the other shop missed diagnosed the problem completely causing me to spend more than I had too. THIS IS WHAT ALVINS AUTO CENTER FOUND -The other repair shop almost caused my computer to malfunction by forcing the relays into the wrong relay terminals, which in turn cause some of the fuses to short circuit. The team at Alvin's were so thoughtful and thorough about making sure that my car came back to in working order and safe to operate on the road. My car broke down in Calistoga while on a weekend getaway. AAA was able to drive it 100 miles. Alvin's Auto Center was the first to pop up in my search after finding out everything in Napa Valley was closed and would most likely be more expensive. Tow truck left it there overnight around 11pm and everything went smoothly with the after hours drop-off. I was super lucky to find Alvin's and I feel grateful after getting my Toyota serviced by Mike. Mike was kind and knowledgeable and I am not the most well-versed in cars. He was able to break it down and explain things to me in a way that allowed me to make a decision I was confident with. The previous mechanic I had taken my car to had done a shoddy job, left a caliper bolt loose, and my car didn't feel great to drive afterwards (which ultimately led to my car breaking down in Calistoga). My trust was broken after that experience and I put off getting my car checked out because I always felt uncomfortable in the past with alarmist mechanics who were trying to make a quick buck. My faith and trust was restored with Mike. I felt comfortable and confident driving my car out of the shop after he explained everything and did the necessary work on my car. I was told the mechanic who worked on my car were a new hire and they were sorry that this had happened to me and the mechanic might not be returning to work soon. I've gone to Alvin's twice for an oil change. During my first visit, they let me know that my rear tires needed to be replaced ASAP (which wasn't something that they could do). I've gotten my oil changed at other places before, and no one mentioned anything about them. They even took the time to show me the tires and explain how they knew and how often I should be getting them replaced. I appreciated the extra step they took to make sure that I felt comfortable and knowledgeable about my tires. During my recent second visit, they immediately checked in with me to make sure that I got the tires replaced. Additionally, I appreciated how they were extremely informative and patient when they were trying to explain how my car was sensitive to carbon build-up and things I should avoid to prevent any problems despite how busy they looked. They even finished within the estimated hour time frame even though I was 5-10 minutes late! Overall, their friendliness, care, and patience stood out to me. I'm so glad I stumbled upon Alvin's. My car's heat shield gave out in the last leg of a road trip and was dragging underneath while I was on 680, so we exited the freeway and searched for the nearest auto shop to see what they could do. No matter the reason, I usually dread taking my car in to any auto shop because I always feel uncomfortable when they try to sell me on all types of services, but I didn't feel that way even once when I was at Alvin's. The guys here were SO friendly and helpful. They put my car on the lift and pulled it off for me at no cost--we were in and out within 20 min. I really appreciate them explaining the parts and issues to me in simple terms, and the fact that they didn't try to take advantage of two girls who are clueless about cars. I've haven't been to a ton of shops before, but this place was very impressive. I came in for something and it turned out I didn't need it replaced, but they found other urgent stuff I needed to get work on. They were pretty responsive via phone and text. I was able to go home and wait for the estimate. I liked their process because they called me explaining what I needed to get work on and I could either tell them what I wanted done or click on the link they provided and select what I wanted myself. If you're like me and need to discuss with someone else or Google some stuff this was pretty convenient. I also paid remotely through that website. All I needed to do was come by when my car was ready. It was a nice experience and I didn't feel pressured to get anything I didn't want done. read more

Anthony, who I think is Alvin's son, picked up and actually initially gave me some advice over the phone. I was burnt out and just wanted it fixed so I brought it in. They then informed me that I had flipped the part! They were nice enough to just charge the originally quoted price, which was really nice of them. Everyone I encountered there was really nice and honest. They do great work and their price is awesome. I've been taking my Toyotas here for about 13 years now. The best, most honest place around. I've told my friends and father about this place and they're happy I did. Their price for all the services is cheaper than the dealers and fairly efficient even though they have tons of cars waiting to be worked on. They work only on Japanese cars. Needed rear brake service. First went to Les Schwab and they misdiagnosed warped rotors and required me to replace calibers on a 35K mileage Lexus SUV. Fortunately I found out about Alvin's through a friend. Went in and met Tony. His shop expertly diagnosed the front and rear brake problems. The car now drives great without vibrations with new pads in the rear. I normally service my car at the dealership so comparing the prices, Alvin's was a much better value. I brought my 2013 bimmer to Alvin's for a routine oil change and to diagnose a clunking noise from the suspension. For this diagnosis alone my dealer had quoted $230! Alvin and team did a great job and for no charge, I only had to pay minimal labour charges for the fixes that came out of the diagnosis. The folks here are super transparent and don't recommend unnecessary repairs. An example of this is the rear brake pads - while my dealer tried to push into having them changed, Alvin's said that I have a good 10K miles more to go with these brakes. Alvin and team are awesome and will be my go-to car care folks forever. read more
