    Steak and American Cheese Sub

While I visit DC I stopped at Al steakhouse and I will say it was so good. The steak and cheese was huge. The only thing I didn't like personally is that the peppers were sweet but other than that this is a good place to get a steak and cheese.

Wednesday 11/6/2024 Came across this spot on instagram and saw that people were saying these were the best cheesesteaks in the dmv so I had to check it out. I spent $36.05 on a in person takeout order of the 12" steak & American cheese $16.49 and the 12" chicken & provolone cheese $14.99. Also they add a an extra charge for credit cards so be prepared. I got both subs with everything on it and they were both enjoyable but those prices were pretty damn high. I enjoyed the chicken provolone more than the steak American but I believe that's mainly due to the difference in cheeses (provolone over American) rather than chicken automatically being better than steak. All in all, I'd give the chicken provolone Philly an 8/10 and the steak American Philly a 7.6/10. My only takeaway would be the prices but besides that, both of the cheesesteaks were good.

Well they've changed! Businesses always do this! I can't blame them due to the inflation of things. It's not as great as it used to be. It's just okay now! Different bread, different meat, different fries. Definitely not the old Al's I'm used to!

Came in for some pre Super Bowl food. With the Eagles playing we decided to partake in some Philly Cheesesteaks. These sandwiches instantly transport you to Philly. The sandwich was so good and I would go back. The restaurant looks like a small diner but the menu looks good too.

The food was AMAZING!! Service was quick and easy. Ambiance was that of a Philly cheesesteak shop! We are from out of town and will definitely visit when we come back.

Ok ..... So you smell this place before you see it.... Especially on a 95° summer afternoon. Getting out of my car today for lunch at Matt & Tony's across the street I smelled what seemed like a steakhouse, so I look up and I see Al's and make a mental note. Our server said he lives in the neighborhood and he cosigned Al's as "solid." After lunch with the fellas across the street I decide to buy us all a sandwich from Al's. My seat was an unobstructed view across the street so I was looking at it the whole time I was eating. People were steadily walking in. Couldn't seem to get it off my mind. I'm not a big Philly Cheesesteak fan or even the DC Steak and Cheese since I come from the land of the best sandwich in the world - the Chicago Italian Beef and even the NYC chopped cheese is really exceptional as well. Those last two are hard to beat. Was curious to see what this place had going on. Glad I stopped in. The sandwiches here are really nice sized - and heavy. They definitely aren't stingy with the meat. I got an 8" mushroom and green pepper. Tomatoes and lettuce on the side (I hate when lettuce and tomatoes sit on sandwiches too long and get mushy). The sandwich is $13 so they're not exactly cheap, but it's definitely a SOLID addition to the lineup in the event that I don't want the typical steak and cheese from the typical neighborhood carryouts in the area. The steak is nicely seasoned and flavorful. It's not dry at all like some places. The sandwich has the perfect sub roll too that absorbs a lot of the meat juice making it moist, just like I like. The place is pretty minimalist when you walk in. I think I saw one table with a couple of chairs and a smiling staff behind the counter that seems very welcoming. Stainless steel counter with an unobscured view to the cooktop. Very friendly and efficient service. If you want to substantial sandwich, check this place out. It's worth it.

Went to Al's because when I was a kid this was a staple for steak & cheese. Me and my friends would play basketball all day at Simpsons field and we would be hungry after that. We would go over to Al's and it would be Mr. John and his son and the other big guy and he would cook and we would order the 16" or XL size and it would feed two of us. The sandwiches were much better back then. Great memories! Any how, I went there today got the 8" steak & cheese with lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions...mayo and ketchup. Can't say it wasn't half bad. The cheese isn't mixed into the meat like they used to do, but everything seemed to be fresh and overall a pretty good sub. I would definitely be back.

My good Northern Virginian folks hipped me to this cheesesteak spot. This Steakhouse is a staple in the community. Since I'm still on the hunt for the BEST...let's see what this cheesesteak is hittin on... . Where I am: @alssteakhouse.Ava . Location Reviewed: 1504 Mt. Vernon Ave., Alexandria V.A. . Menu Includes: Bacon, Sausage & Egg Breakfast Sandwiches, French Toast & Omelettes, Pizza, Hot Subs, Philly Subs, Cold Cut Subs, Burgers, Rueben's, Hot Dogs, a Chicken Sandwich, Veggie Burger, Fish Sandwich, a Halfsmoke, Cake, Cookies, & Beverages. . Items Reviewed: Their 5 topping Pizza (a 14" pie with pepperoni, sausage, green peppers, onions, & mushrooms $17). DECENT. This pie had all the elements...it was missing a tasty marinara base, & fresher ingredients. Their Fries ($3.99). DECENT. They were just...fries. That's it. Their Green Pepper Cheesesteak (a 12"sub with green peppers, onions, mushrooms, & mayo $18). ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!! Now the protein on this sub was plentiful, & tender. It wasn't a cheesy as I like, & there were too many veggies. . Customer Service: Excellent!! Accommodating & Attentive. . Online Navigation: Super Easy . Parking: Street/Metered . Recommendations: Get the cheesesteak & ask for less veggies. =STAMP =A.DELICIOUS =DELICIOUS =DECENT =PASS =NAH #Bigschlimsreviews

Possibly the best Steak, Egg and Cheese in the DMV! It is seasoned very well. Big portions for your money.

This sandwich is delicious, it's the only sandwich you will find like this in the DMV area. Don't be afraid to try the pizza sub.

The Yates family owns both restaurants (they also own Table Talk over on Duke St.) We were wowed by The Loft's interior design. So nice and inviting. Just to get it out of the way, there is an idiosyncrasy in Havana 151's bar service. Even though there's a full bar, when we came for lunch shortly before noon, our server mentioned that the bartender doesn't come in until 4pm, so they can't provide cocktails earlier in the day. But that was okay since we weren't drinking anyway. We started with the yucca fries as an appetizer. They were flavorful and had a great texture. For better or for worse, the dipping sauce was kind of a cilantro pesto. JP ordered the Ropa Vieja (literal translation: red clothes). This dish came with shredded beef stewed with tomato, red and green pepper and onion. It also came with rice and toasted plantains. JP thought this dish was excellent. I ordered the Cuban Sandwich, which was pork, ham, cheese, Dijon mustard and pickles on Ciabatta bread. I did pick the pickles off (like I would with a hamburger), and ate them later. Accompanying the sandwich were some really delicious fries. I should note that I took half of the sandwich home, and when I heated it up and ate it the next day, the garlic from the pork had amplified., Service was great from our talkative waitress. Our orders came out in good time and were correctly prepared. We'll be back.

The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous, with warm, inviting décor and a quiet location just off the main drag--something we actually appreciated because it made for a more relaxed, charming experience. We lived in Old Town about 25 years ago, and it was amazing to see how much the area has grown. We started with the cast iron meatballs, and they were outstanding. The meatballs were tender and generously portioned, and the sauce was so good we didn't want to leave a drop behind. For lunch, we split the turkey club, which turned out to be the perfect choice because it was enormous! Every ingredient tasted incredibly fresh, but the real star was the warm sesame-seed bread--light, fresh, and unlike any sandwich bread we've had before. The service was exceptional -- friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. A friend of my husband's, Jesse (possibly a manager?
