The steak egg and cheese was good but nothing to write home about. If I were comparing to the broiler in Arlington, I would say The Broiler is better. Fantastic divey place for cheese steaks and other tasty dishes. A good casual spot with a bunch of different types of cheese steaks and they get food out really quick. Wednesday 11/6/2024 Came across this spot on instagram and saw that people were saying these were the best cheesesteaks in the dmv so I had to check it out. I spent $36.05 on a in person takeout order of the 12" steak & American cheese $16.49 and the 12" chicken & provolone cheese $14.99. Also they add a an extra charge for credit cards so be prepared. I got both subs with everything on it and they were both enjoyable but those prices were pretty damn high. I enjoyed the chicken provolone more than the steak American but I believe that's mainly due to the difference in cheeses (provolone over American) rather than chicken automatically being better than steak. All in all, I'd give the chicken provolone Philly an 8/10 and the steak American Philly a 7.6/10. My only takeaway would be the prices but besides that, both of the cheesesteaks were good. read more

Ordered a few subs for superbowl (default rooting for the Eagles!) and Al's did not disappoint. I ordered for pickup 2 12" cheesesteaks, and 2 12" chicken cheesesteaks. I ordered both with provolone and as these were traveling with me, requested the lettuce and tomato on the side so it wouldn't get soggy. My instructions were followed to a t and the order was ready on time . the staff was kind when I showed up to pick up the order. Revisited my fav steak & cheese spot and noticed a slight change, it's more of a Mexican restaurant vibe, all was being played was Latin music??? Food was still amazing but hopefully they don't forget that Al's history has a diverse clientele and that they don't completely start catering to only one type of customer. So mad I didn't get a picture of my food, because I demolished it before I could grab one. Found out about this place on TikTok, and I knew I had to try it. The reviewers did NOT disappoint. I will be back here very soon! It's about 4 little tables inside, the woman at the register was very nice, and their menu is simple, nothing complicated. The food didn't take long at all, and it was HOT! So if someone sat their food was cold, they lied. I had the original with mushrooms, hots, lettuce and mayo; with a side of tator tots and a ginger ale. I could only eat half of the 8 inch sub. Ok ..... So you smell this place before you see it.... Especially on a 95° summer afternoon. Getting out of my car today for lunch at Matt & Tony's across the street I smelled what seemed like a steakhouse, so I look up and I see Al's and make a mental note. Our server said he lives in the neighborhood and he cosigned Al's as "solid." After lunch with the fellas across the street I decide to buy us all a sandwich from Al's. My seat was an unobstructed view across the street so I was looking at it the whole time I was eating. People were steadily walking in. Couldn't seem to get it off my mind. I'm not a big Philly Cheesesteak fan or even the DC Steak and Cheese since I come from the land of the best sandwich in the world - the Chicago Italian Beef and even the NYC chopped cheese is really exceptional as well. Those last two are hard to beat. Was curious to see what this place had going on. Glad I stopped in. The sandwiches here are really nice sized - and heavy. They definitely aren't stingy with the meat. I got an 8" mushroom and green pepper. Tomatoes and lettuce on the side (I hate when lettuce and tomatoes sit on sandwiches too long and get mushy). The sandwich is $13 so they're not exactly cheap, but it's definitely a SOLID addition to the lineup in the event that I don't want the typical steak and cheese from the typical neighborhood carryouts in the area. The steak is nicely seasoned and flavorful. It's not dry at all like some places. The sandwich has the perfect sub roll too that absorbs a lot of the meat juice making it moist, just like I like. The place is pretty minimalist when you walk in. I think I saw one table with a couple of chairs and a smiling staff behind the counter that seems very welcoming. Stainless steel counter with an unobscured view to the cooktop. Very friendly and efficient service. If you want to substantial sandwich, check this place out. It's worth it. read more

I was missing my Philly cheesesteak and kept seeing this place recommended by folks. Just like Philly, the portion sizes are big. Went to Al's because when I was a kid this was a staple for steak & cheese. Me and my friends would play basketball all day at Simpsons field and we would be hungry after that. We would go over to Al's and it would be Mr. John and his son and the other big guy and he would cook and we would order the 16" or XL size and it would feed two of us. The reason I didn't like it is their onions and green peppers were SUPER sweet, and I just don't want any sweet tastes on my steak and cheese. I always get onions and green peppers on my steak and cheese and they're usually not sweet, but for some reason, the green peppers and onions they used here on my sub yesterday were way too sweet and abnormally so. I've never had onions and peppers that are that sweet before. So that ruined the sandwich and my experience for me. If it weren't for that, I probably would've liked this place. Had to try this place after seeing it recommended so many times on social media and even by others I've met. It lives up to the hype of being the best place to get a cheesesteak in the DMV so far! They were fast, even with it being so packed. There are seating areas inside and a few outside. Not that many for the amount of customers they have but many apparently know because there were a lot of pickups and takeouts. My daughter and I got the philly cheesesteak and it was A1 10/10!! I always compare every cheesesteak to my Giovanni's NY sub, which is elite, and I think Al's may have outdone them! Nice local place with large subs. The price reflects the size so it is not cheap. But, I'll come back probably twice a year. The place inside looks clean. The bathroom is useable. Me and a friend drove an hour and a half to try the cheesesteak subs here. She ordered a chicken cheese steak and I got the steak, mushrooms and peppers sub. Both had French fries and shared some mozzarella sticks. I have to say the subs were tasty, cooked just right, was not too oily and was not a messy sub. The fries were also cooked very well and complimented the subs really well. Service was friendly but more of a takeout kind of place there were no waiters or anything like that. Seating here is limited and Dining area inside was small but clean. We sat outside and enjoyed the scenery using there patio furniture which had big umbrellas to block the sun. Giving 3 stars because although subs were worth the price paid, the mozzarella sticks were not that great and we were bothered by many flies sitting outside. On the expensive side, but maybe the best cheesesteak I've had within 30 minutes of Washington, D.C. Stopped by most recently last night to pick up a cheesesteak with fries. Ordered on their website and picked up 20-25 minutes later when I arrived with no issues. Still think this is the best cheesesteak in the immediate area - the only cheese steak I've had that's better is out at Jimmy's Old Town Tavern out in Herndon (about 35-40 minutes from D.C.). Al's packs a lot of meat into their cheesesteaks and they're very tasty. The cheesesteaks come in two sizes - regular 8" for $12 and a half-sized 4" for $9. A side of fries is $5. So overall pricey compared to most other cheesesteak spots in the area but do think it's the best cheesesteak meal you'll find within 30 minutes of Alexandria or Arlington. Al's has been around for nearly 70 years and is located in the heart of the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, VA. I believe they did undergo a change in management a little over a year ago which has been the subject of some customer complaints... for example the new management apparently changed the meat they use for the cheesesteaks to a less expensive meat. But I still find the cheesesteaks (and fries) to be the best in the immediate area and would highly recommend any locals or tourists stopping by to check out at least once... read more

However , the cheesesteak was pretty good . The customer service was good. I ate only half and ate the other half the next day which was really good . I would definitely visit again . Al's is great. The cheesesteaks are huge and delicious. The large is more than enough for two people. As odd as it sounds my favorite meal here is the fried chicken salad. It is a huge salad, always fresh, with hot and crispy tenders. I have not personally tried it but a friend swears by the pizza as well. I have been going to Al's for years. Recently I had a bad experience, the steak sub did not taste good, it tasted old. It was like the grill had'nt been cleaned. I called the manager and he did'nt have time for me. He told me he was very busy and for me to call back the next day. Very poor customer service. Needless to say, I did not call back. I was very frustrated. No way to treat a long standing customer or anyone. Oh! btw he hung up on me.. I tried asking for his name twice and never gave it.
