Disappointing experience. We called for a 6-person reservation at 8 pm, and specifically confirmed that they have high chairs available. They told us kitchen closed at 8:30 but otherwise seemed amenab The confirming text changed the time to 7:45 without giving us a reason why. We showed up at 7:50 (train passes along Northwest highway), with the restaurant about 1/3 filled. When we give our name, the hostess immediately responded that they cancelled the reservation since we weren't on time. It was needlessly abrasive given how much seating was available. She then rolled her eyes and mockingly asked us "who told you there were high chairs? We've never had them here." She seemed too annoyed about us eating there, so we went down the street and had a delicious meal. Owners, we're trying to give you our money. Please train your staff to let us do so. read more

I really, really wanted to love Alt Thai. Considering all my favorite Thai restaurants are outside IL, I'm desperate to find a go to local spot however I was disappointed with Alt Thai. To start, I called at 8:15pm to find out when their kitchen closes and I was told "come on in." I arrive at 8:40 and ask to sit on the patio and am told it's closed. No problem. Along with being handed the menu, I am told I have 5 minutes to order with the kitchen closing, this is exactly what I was hoping to avoid... Nonetheless I make some decisions and indicate everything is to be vegetarian and not spicy (my mom had a dental procedure and was sensitive) . I am told the Tom Kha soup and green curry cannot be made vegetarian. Only the red and panang curry are available vegetarian along with pad Thai. Fine. We get our food and the red curry is tasty to me but a 9 borderline 10/10 spice level. Our server is no where to be found so another one steps in and says "this is how it is." I ask to speak to the manger, she explains the paste is what adds the spice and that there is nothing that can be done to change that. I ask for sugar or honey and she says that won't help. I explain that I specifically asked my server to make sure all that we are ordering is not spicy, but she continues to defend the curry. I then ask to order something else and she says the kitchen is closed. Rice does not come with the curry, it is an inadequate portion however. All while this is occurring, the staff is vacuuming and mopping the floors. We turn to the pad Thai which was bland but palatable. Egg rolls were good, among the fried tofu which was the only appetizers we could order. Thai tea was good. After all was said and done there was no responsibility taken on their part for something we should have been informed of up front. The vegetarian and vegan options that are harped on this Yelp page are few and far in between. There are plenty of Thai restaurants that are able to serve vegetarian counterparts of their menu and able to communicate spice levels adequately but Alt Thai is not one of them. Not sure what is going on here but things have gone from best to worst in the last 90 days. This is a 30 minute drive for us and in the past it was worth it but not anymore. Since the "Renovation" it's an entirely new experience and not in a good way. The menu has been slashed, portions reduced, prices raised. Our food came out of the kitchen last night ice cold, and just lacking any real flavor. Service was all but non existent. If they are trying to run this place into the ground to cash out then it's an overwhelming success but this place was a family favorite for well over 20 years and last night was the 2nd bad meal we've had in a row and I don't see us coming back. read more

We ordered the massaman curry and pad Thai. I didn't get to take a photo of the massaman but my husband and I loved both dishes. The curry was sweet and very mild spicy-ness. It was creamy enough for me though which is more than other Thai places which tend to be watery. The pad Thai was on point. Tastier than other ones I've tried before and it had shredded beets which adds taste and texture to it. They didn't have mango nectar so they offered pineapple "nectar." But it tasted like just your typical pineapple juice. Similar to what would taste like pineapple juice in a can. Not sure if it's worth the $3.50 price tag. This place is interesting. While the decor is relatively nice for a Thai place, it is not spectacular compared to other Arlington Heights restaurants. The price is not particularly high but it's not a bargain either. At least there is ample underground parking nearby. The one thing that really distinguishes this place from others are the appetizer plates for 2 or more. These provide fairly generous portions and could frankly be used as a meal in itself. Otherwise you'll find most of the standard Thai dishes here. The only warning is that mild dishes may be more spicy than most people can handle. Also, there is a bit of a generic look to the dishes so sometimes it's hard to tell some apart. The presentation is fairly good for the dishes while the seasoning is not overbearing. It's a nice place to bring people but the food may not please everyone's tastes. However, the menu is extensive enough almost everyone should be able to find something they like. read more

I had the red curry with beef and brown rice, very spicy is just regular spicy in my opinion or maybe I have a higher tolerance to spice. A very clean and presentable restaurant in the adorable downtown Arlington heights area! I'm not usually a big fan of Thai food, but after looking on Yelp, some of the dishes left me with a craving for it. It doesn't get too crowded so we were served right away too. We ordered the big plate, spicy duck rolls, and pork pad Thai. The big plate was a great appetizer/dish to share and sample some things on the menu. The crispy salmon rolls weren't really what I expected- which was what I was most excited for- but still good. The array of sauces in this dish was awesome too- lots of different yummy flavors. I really liked the spicy duck rolls too, but beware- it is SPICY. The pork pad Thai was fresh and delicious as well. I'm pretty sure this is the only (but one of the few) Thai spots I've tried and am willing to go back to! Some other items on the menu looked very promising too. read more

It was my brother's birthday, and my family who is full of vegetarians as well as non vegetarians found something to eat, usually ends up being harder for the vegetarians as there aren't many options. I've been helping her with some things including helping her fix up her house, so I yelped this place to order to takeaway. We ordered 5 things and split between 4 of us. The Basil Chicken, Lard Bar with Chicken, Shrimp Pad Thai, Fried Tofu and a Noodle Dish (sorry, I don't remember what it was called). All were excellent. I called ahead and the food was ready when I arrived and it was very well packaged. The woman who helped us was very nice. Since moving to the Chicago area nearly a decade ago, and enjoying a lot of restaurants, there was one cuisine that I felt has been consistently disappointing: Thai food. The dishes have seemed bland, lacking spice and fish sauce, Americanized or served as a tiresome fusion concoction. That is, until today. Even though we had to order carry out due to the ongoing pandemic, it was one of the best meals I've had in months. The food was bold, authentic, properly spicy and frankly beautiful. Came here for dinner with two friends on a Wed 07/31/19. I thought the food was very good, I had mixed vegtables served in soy sauce extra spicy. The thai wraps were tasty but the bits of lime on the chewey side. I wasn't even sure whether I should eat them but I did since they were in a dish. The server was very professional and prompt. Wine available in 1/2 price bottles reasonably priced. What they could do better: we asked for separate checks 3 times but food was combined onto 1 bill. They tried to separate it but my friend's drink was on my bill. They finally got it right. My friend asked for no salt no soy but they did not hear the 'no soy'. My friend has soy allergies and ended up eating it. Management comped the meal. Some people are allergic to peanuts and fish so its important for them to write down specific requests when taking the order. read more

Great food, as always. I had one of the curries, which had great taste but was a little too get full full credit. Service was efficient but always brusque, bordering on rude. I'm from out of town and try to go there when I'm visiting. In the past, we've always had a nice time. This time, they rushed everybody out at 9, even those tables who hadn't finished their meals. It made people feel very unwelcome. I won't return because there are simply too many great restaurants in the Chicago area to submit to rude behavior. Alt Thai has been one of my go-to Thai restaurants in the Arlington Heights area for a number of years. Their dishes are always made with enticing, fresh ingredients, especially noticeable with the veggies. Service is always good, dine in and carry out. Over the last 2+ years, I was impressed with how they handled COVID protocols, especially in the early days. They were the first and (possibly) the only restaurant I was going to that immediately provided their workers with both masks and plastic face shields.
