The Groupon deal was very tempting, but It was less than mediocre. I am not going to buy another Groupon even it is more than 50% discount for the price. I'm sorry for leaving a 2 stars but here's my logic. Being called a "bistro" and located in downtown Ann Arbor, the quality does not justify higher ratings. Got a Groupon for 4 people but we had 3 people, and were charged $2.40 for the absent fourth. It was Saturday 11/21/15 afternoon and we were the only guests dinning. There was no choice for tea, Lipton only, and it is unacceptable for a "bistro". Luke warm water without lemon or honey, over priced. 1st entree: Turkey panini, was not a panini, it was a sandwich with French Toast grilled on the table top grill; not pressed and without marks. We did not like the raw onions, would have been better with tomatoes to give it more moisture. 2nd entree: Steak and eggs. Steak ordered medium rare, came out medium. Eggs were perfect sunny side up. Hash brown was fried mushy brown. 3rd entree: Baked Furghessa on Clay. Polenta was over fried and furghessa and the size of a cup of soup. Over priced for small portion, and the beef wandered away; not meaty at all. Latte was fair for the price, can't complain. Server was nice and attentive. Overall, unimpressed, you can get an equal quality of meal at Denny's or IHOP. Personally, I would not pay the full price for this "bistro" experience. If you're the management or owner and reading this, please consider these constructive criticisms. If you believe the business can survive on Groupon deals then I may come again with a Groupon. read more

aMa Bistro is a new restaurant in a totally refurbished space where Mr. Greeks used to be. The interior is bright and fresh, with a mixture of booths, banquettes and tables. The website says they're open 24 hours, but I was in for dinner so I can't confirm. They have an extensive breakfast and lunch/dinner menu, and they're happy to serve items from both at any time. The lunch/dinner menu looked like a lot of traditional American fare mixed with some interesting Albanian (or perhaps Ukrainian? I couldn't quite tell) dishes. There were lots of delicious-sounding if fairly standard sandwiches, burgers, salads, and dinners, the last of which come with a soup or salad and bread. I went with the buhrani, which was a beef and spinach dish served atop rice, polenta, or potatoes. It came with a side of simple but delicious carrots, and was quite tasty with a bit of lingering spice. I look forward to returning and trying more of the ethnic dishes as well as some of the sandwiches. For those Ann Arborites who might be haunted by bad memories of the terrible Mr. Greek's, I urge you to give this place a try! read more

I wanted to love this place. And I decided before I ordered that I was going to yelp, google+, tripadvisor and whatever to get the word out about this place. My innitial thought was, it is well priced for downtown Ann Arbor food, modernly chic and strangely empty considering the first two things. I don't want to hurt the buisness so I am avoiding leaving a 2 start review or 1 star that it deserves based on my food experience. Ordered Takeout. I asked the server which Albanian dish he would recommend and he recommended one that was like a stewed beef. Came with rice or polenta and a soup or salad. I got the rice and salad. The rice was shaped like it had been molded in a cup and the rice was hard. Maybe it sat out for a few days before serving it because it was insanely hard, and not the crispy rice kind of hard, but uncooked or really really stale rice. I wish I had taken a picture of it. I had never had the beef dish, so I can't really say if it was good or bad because I don't know what it was supposed to taste like. I didn't really like it, but for all I know it was the best version of that dish in all of Michigan. The salad was pretty standard, iceberg lettuce with some pieces of vegetables. Definitely not worth $12. I will give them another chance, but will stick to the American menu. read more

Unpopular opinion, but I wouldn't really recommend going to ama bistro for their brunch / breakfast options. Their breakfasts are not terribly impressive - I can make it myself at home - and their fruit (including their avocado) often isn't very ripe. If you really want to go for brunch or breakfast, just get 3 or 4 sides and that'll be a lot cheaper than getting an actual dish. HOWEVER, their burgers and sandwiches are absolutely phenomenal. I highly recommend the L.A. burger. It is my go to and I think it's one of the best American burgers in the $10-15 price range that I've come across in Ann Arbor, which is saying a lot. Service overall is friendly and fast when it's not too busy during weekdays, but as expected it can get a bit slow on weekends. read more

Came to receive breakfast. Knowing I was in a popular part of Ann Arbor, I expected the prices to be inflated. To my surprise the prices were better than my local Bob Evans! Ended up ordering the "big breakfast" which came with 3 eggs, 2 chocolate chip pancakes ,and 6 pieces of bacon! Before my food came out I used the bathroom which could use a little renovation as it was pretty outdated in comparison to the trendy interior of the restaurant. We ordered Lox and avocado toast and a corned beef hash... there was hardly any beef in my corned beef hash and the overall portion was so small. Is this the best food I've ever had? No. Is it the best place I've been in Ann Arbor? Also no. HOWEVER, Ama Bistro has the best food to price ratio near campus, in my opinion. I've tried things from their breakfast/brunch menu (great crepes, good french toast specials, and they used to have a delicious goat cheese avocado toast which I think has since left the menu) and lunch menu (I've had about five of their sandwiches and all were tasty!) I like to take people here if we are looking for a lower-cost option with a cute atmosphere and some good eats. It's also relatively less crowded than some of the places closer to the Diag and they have good coffee so it makes for a nice work-lunch spot. read more

She's also witnessed staff drop lemon wedges on the floor and continued to serve them in a drink. Great start. It was very crowded, so the host asked if we would like to be seated at the entrance where everyone was lining up. Because it's by the door and it was cold that day, we decided to keep waiting for a table. Right before our food came, the host came over and asked us again if we would be okay with switching over to the table by the entrance so she could seat a different party where we were already seated. We noticed she didn't ask any of the other tables of 2 that were seated at the same time as us. Not to bring race or age into the picture, but it felt like those were involved in her decision making. We went to Ama for sunday brunch. We were a group of four, and we all ordered different things. I had bacon and cheddar omelette, which was well prepared with decent ingredients. It was not greasy or anything. It came with fresh fruits (hash-brown was the other option) and toast. Filling, healthy and tasty! Yet I am not sure whether they are prepared for busy Sundays at all. Our food did not come all at once; even an individual plate did not come at once. My friend got her french toast (without sugar and cinnamon dust, although she had asked for some), and then had to wait for the eggs and sausage, which were normally a part of her combo plate. We were served food, but then we did not have cutlery. Our waitress said she would bring some, but then never showed up again. I am sure everybody there worked with best intentions. The place has potential to become a good breakfast spot, but can't compete with the other big brunch places with that kind of amateurish service. Let me just start with aMazing, I came here on a Saturday with a few of my girlfriends. It was packed! The hostess tells us nicely that there will be a wait, once she sat us down we were quickly helped with drinks and the waitress was ready to take our order. I had ordered the Fhurgesa with over medium eggs fruit and wheat toast, it was out of this world good! I really felt the Albanian vibe while eating the first bite! When we paid the bill, she denied the coupon. She made up an excuse and said that we had not said before, and the computer system does not reverse it. It is not even printed out in the fine print. I had the tomato basil soup to start. It was perfect. Lite yet flavorful and filled with spices. The flavor was complex and provided sip after sip of goodness. I then had the Italian Panini with pesto, mozzarella, and tomato. The bread was very good but the inside of sandwich just a touch underdone. I would have preferred a more hot cheese sandwich. Avocado toast beats any other nearby, fruit or tomatoes offered as an alternative to potatoes and bread with everything. All the usual choices, including varieties of eggs Benedict, but for me, the interesting ethnic egg choices make this one of my favorites, - forghessa, bhurani, and khima bring a whole new and delicious aspect to breakfast.
